During the month of October at Windsor Place we celebrated Fall Harvest festivities and events. First the residents made nutritious snack bags for the players and coaches of our annual Field Kindley Homecoming football pep rally. Due to the unpre-dictable weather however it was canceled. But, a couple of our Windsor Place residents loaded up and went to the high school football practice and presented the bags to the coach and players. How about that?! – PEP RALLY WILL TRAVEL!

Then the question was asked, what is your favorite season? Most agree that fall is the most wonderful time of the year. Their reasoning is the leaves are falling and changing color. The weather is getting cooler, meaning time for scarves, jackets and coats. Drinking hot chocolate, lighting the fire for the first time, planning a hayride for the residents to enjoy the fresh air and to enjoy the different scenery around town.

Some of the many activities the residents have enjoyed doing has been decorating pumpkins, pumpkin painting, pumpkin carving and a pumpkin cook-off. Also, fall is the start of the holiday season; Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

We also celebrated fall with fun filled afternoon with our residents by having a harvest party. Some of the many items served were caramel apples, apple cider, popcorn, hot chocolate, hot dogs, pumpkin cupcakes, , and pizza.( How pizza fits – go figure ! )

Rounding out the month was Treats off the Streets. This event gives the residents an opportunity to hand out candy kids of all ages, also, and meet and greet members of the community.

I would like to thank Sabrina, and Back Yard Boys, Emmanuel Chapel Church and singers, for taking the time to come out and share their musical talent with our residents

The Road We Travel By: Monte Coffman, Executive Director

Please consider the following question: “What if you woke up tomorrow and the only things you had were the things you thanked God for today? What kind of life would you have?

We now enter into the Thanksgiving season as the year’s end approaches. The Thanksgiving holiday is so under appreci-ated and grossly over looked.

As I look back at 2017, there were people, events, and accomplishments for which to be thankful and grateful.I am so grateful of the staff which serve in the nursing center and ALF programs. The nurse’s aides and nurses, cooks and

helpers, housekeepers, laundry workers, activity directors and maintenance crew who give of themselves to honor elders by their care and services. I love being the weekend manager and seeing up close what they are capable of doing. They produce literally hundreds of thousands of unwitnessed acts of kindness. I am so thankful for them!

I am equally grateful of our home care workers who feel so personally responsible for elder clients. Our organization serves 1500 clients in their homes.

I am thankful for our Telehealth program. It is keeping people with chronic conditions in their homes and saving medicare and medicaid millions of dollars each year.

I am appreciative of the leaders in our organization, whether it be in the skilled nursing center, assisted living, or home care. There are managers and leaders whose lives are completely committed to our mission and vision. It is clear the performance of their teams is determined by their influence. I am so thankful.

I am appreciative of the owners of our organization. While they are experts in the elder care business, this group has extended to the operation great anatomy and support for 26 years now. They offer new ideas and challenges without meddling or operational interruptions. I am thankful for their confidence and example.

I am so blessed to have a wife and family (children, grandchildren, my parents, my brothers and sister) whom are all great supporters and balanced critics of my work. I love them so! I am so thankful.

Every day I ask God for His blessings and provisions on these people. I ask Him for wisdom and judgement. He is faith-ful. I am so grateful!

I am thankful for health. I have been blessed.I am thankful for God’s creation...the skies, the seasons, the animals, the sights, the smells, the tastes.I am thankful for friends who make me a better person, who contribute to my life with encouraging words.I am thankful for my Grandchildren. Their smiles, laughter, hugs and kisses are balm to my spirit.I am thankful for our freedoms. We know nothing but freedoms. I am thankful. We, here at Windsor Place, continue to be thankful for your decision to choose one of the Windsor Place services. We

are thankful for the partnership we have with the community members and their families and friends. We understand you had other options. We thank you for choosing us. We hope our care and service will honor your trust.

Thankful people are kinder, less prideful, more serving, more gracious. May we live in a perpetual state of Thanksgiving for we are blessed. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Eating at Shirley’s Café. Shopping at Greens ( a ladys dress shop). Go-ing to Rexall and using the penny weigh in machine. Going to Sky Line Drive In it was only $1 a car load. Going to Redfords department store to get supplies. Shopping at Bynums (they were family friends) clothing store. It is hard to remember things but I remember I was so proud of them and going shopping there. I remember there being a lot more places in Coffeyville to play bingo, compared to now. We began the month of October participating in Anti-Bullying Week. A different theme was carried out each day as we dressed in different attire to depict different aspects of addressing bullying. It was thrilling to the children to see residents as well as staff dressing with us!

Our next venture was going to the pumpkin patch in McCune, Kansas. For all of you who reach back in time, you know how these adventures excite the young as well as the adults. Residents were anxious for the students return so they could listen to the students’ account of the day! It seems the corn maze was a favorite!

What fun was the “Story Book Parade”! Students arrived dressed as their favorite storybook character and how proud they were to tell the Grandmas and Grandpas about their character and their book. There is never a dull moment in Kindergarten!

Parent Teachers’ conferences were held this month and the residents certainly enjoyed seeing and visiting with the students’ parents as they came and went. Many residents recalled attending school conferences for their own children. What a pleasant and comfy feeling it becomes to travel to days past.

Meeting new friends is always exciting and we were blessed with a friend from the UK, Lorraine George. Lorraine is a British researcher visiting Windsor Place to gather information on intergenerational schools like Age-to-Age. She not only spent time gathering data, she took time to visit with the students about England. The children’s’ favorite topic was learning about the Kings and Queens. The exchange Lorraine had with the children was enlightening. We wish her well as she returns to the UK and we made sure she knows it was our pleasure to be a part of her journey!

Halloween is an exciting time for students and the residents of Windsor made sure they made the best of it. They had a Halloween party for the students. The Grandmas and Grandpas helped with games and joined the children for refreshments to end the party.

The wonderful activities of October are now packed in our memories and we are looking forward to the holiday season. Thanksgiving will find us thankful for our opportunities, family and friends. Following Thanksgiving, we will certainly look for ward to the lessons of love and giving! We hope many of you will join us in our celebrations!

Until next month, we wish you all the love and happiness we experience in our Age-to-Age journey!

News from Assisted Living

By: Cathey Heady, Assisted Living Activity Director

Fall is such a beautiful time of the year, wonderful colors, cooling temperatures, and many traditions in full swing. Deco-rating for fall is so fun and easy and the residents welcomed the change. We have enjoyed several crafts creating and painting pumpkins. It is also a great time for apples, so we had a special snack of caramel apples after one of our penny bingo games. It was a special treat.

We finally made it to the “new” donut shop to try out a delicious treat. It is always fun to get out and try something new. Several of the residents have been enjoying trips to the dollar tree; they love all the choices for just a dollar.

Cheryl Haley came to do a wonderful presentation about monarch butterflies. We learned so much about their migration, reproduction, and life span. The most fun part was tagging the actual butterflies and releasing them. We hope Cheryl can come again next year.

Family parties are always an exciting time. Chili with all the fixins, broccoli cheese soup and pumpkin cake make for a great meal! Bingo is extra great when our family members join in the fun. Tyler Street enjoyed the music of John Oyler. Next month is a fall pie social, we can’t wait to see everyone again.

We want to give a huge shout out and thank you to Marty and Toni Hill for allowing us to use their home for a bonfire and hayride. We owe Dustin a huge thank you for keeping the campfire burning; blowing out the fire on our marshmallows, and for ensuring our hayrack ride was awesome. What a fun evening we had full of ghost stories, hot dogs, s’mores, and of course the wonderful hayride. The weather was perfect and the memories made were unforgettable. We definitely need to make this an annual event.

Painting pumpkins was an adventure for sure. Everyone had their own idea of what they wanted to do. We searched pintrest, mixed paint colors, and created a wonderful variety of pumpkins. We enjoyed our Halloween carnival and costume contest.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, if you would like to eat lunch with your family member on Thanksgiving, please RSVP by Friday, November 17. The cost is $5.

“Unbecoming” a Nursing Home!!..........www.windsorplace.net

“Recognizing that all life is precious, we will diligently serve the needs of each who enter here in a dignified manner.”

In closing, if there is anyone in the community that would like to come out to Windsor Place and volunteer their talent with our residents such as local church choirs, schools, magicians, bands, pianist, karaoke, story telling , or even family and friends please contact Karen Wilson at 620-252-4914 please leave your name and number. It will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
