The APRIL 2018 Newsletter for First UMC Family and Friends First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC Χριστός ἀνέστη! Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη!" (Christos anesti! Alithos anesti!) The ancient cry of my Greek grandfather echoes in mind this month! You heard the cry as well: "Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!" The Easter hymn resounds as well: "I serve a risen Savior; he's in the world today. I know that is living whatever foes may say." If the hymn is true, may I be bold enough to ask "do you serve a risen Savior?" Paul took some time with Timothy, his son in Christ, to help him as he pastored the church Paul left for him to lead in Ephesus. Apparently, some of the first Christians had learned the discipline of good financial management and were becoming wealthy by the world's standards. So Paul offered Timothy this word of advice: "As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life" (1 Timothy 6:1719, NRSV). As a pastor, I am challenged by Paul's admonitions: Am I helping you choose to set your hope on "the uncertainty of riches," or the "God who richly provides?" Am I teaching you how to be "rich in good works, generous, and ready to share?" Am I helping you use your treasure to lay a "good foundation for the future" so that you might really live the "life that is life?" To be honest, my answer is a rather timid "maybe." And that will not stand the test of time! So, in April we will turn our hearts toward asking the question Andy Stanley, pastor of North Point Church in Atlanta, recently asked, "how to be rich?" Note that Andy does not ask if you are rich. He assumes that by being blessed to be an American that we are all among the richest 5% of the popula- tion of the world. What that means is that if 20 people from around the globe were to gather in your kitchen for a meal, it would only make sense that you provide the food -- you are the richest one in the room. We may not feel rich, but we are rich. So its time that we started living like it! So come prepared to learn and grow with me using our time, talent, and treasure while singing "I serve a risen Savior, he's in the world today!" Grace and Peace, Allen Bingham, Pastor

Relay for Rohleder

The Pilecki family of Lockport, N.Y. is hosting a fundraiser for my son, Keith. He has a rare form of Leukemia called Blastic Plasmacytoid Den-dritic Cell Neoplasm. Initially, he was given 8-12 months to live. Keith went through a clinical trial at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston which is some 500 miles from his home. Keith is currently cancer free and is 22 months into the disease. Unfortunately, the financially bur-dens have been a challenge due to the travel ex-penses and loss of job. The fundraiser will be held April 15. Any donations may be made to: Rally for Rohleder, c/o Marian Pilecki, 6511 Campbell Blvd., Lockport, NY 14094. May God Bless You. The Bill Rohleder Family

Youth Summer Trip to Lake Junaluska, NC and White Water Rafting

July 23-27 Monday—Friday

GET ON THE BOAT! THE MIRROR “When Jesus got into the boat, his disciples followed him.”

Matthew 8:23

The Lake Junaluska package is $359 per youth including youth camp worship and programming, t-shirt, mission work, housing, and meals.

Whitewater Rafting add-on package is $90 including lunch and dinner.

The youth will spend a week renewing soul, mind, and body this summer at Lake Junaluska!

Jesus often tells his disciples, “Get on the boat!” Once on board, he teaches them, calms their fears, and launches them into mission. It’s no surprise the Church is symbol-ized by a boat and sail. Miracles happen when we get on board with Jesus. Come to Lake Junaluska this summer, and find your spot on His crew!

We will need $100 now to register for this trip—if we register by April 11, we will save $100.

Please keep in mind that with all of our fundraisers, the $100 deposit might be all we have to pay for the trip. With this being short notice for the deposit, please let Mary Griffith know if the $100 deposit is a problem.

This price does not include White Water Rafting . $90 is due May 30 for White Water Rafting.

Youth MUST attend UMYF at least 3 Sundays each month to attend youth summer trip.

I hope everyone gets to go to Lake Jualuska. These summer trips are some of the greatest growing to-gether in Christ memories we make.

Please call Mary with any questions or concerns. $100 deposits are due April 11. Financial scholarships are available.
