COACHING STAFF

Brendan Dawson • Head Coach Brendan Dawson made an immediate impact in his first season as Widener’s men’s lacrosse coach and is hoping year two will provide more of the same. Dawson took over a talented team playing in a competitive conference and made his presence felt. The Pride rode a seven-game winning streak to the

inaugural Commonwealth Conference title and a 9-8 record. Under his watch, seven players for Widener were named all-con-fernce and three were picked first team. Dawson arrived after serving one season as the first men’s lacrosse coach at Aurora University, building the program from scratch. The Spartans ended the campaign 11-6 and qualified for the Midwest Men’s Lacrosse Conference Tournament as a No. 3 seed after being picked seventh in the preseason poll. Eight players from that squad were picked all-conference and Dawson was named the league’s Coach of the Year. Dawson recruited over 30 players to compete last season and an additional 25 to come to Aurora in 2012. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, handled game management

John Dunn is in his first season as an assistant coach for Widener. He arrived after serving one year as an assistant at Swarthmore. Dunn was responsible for organizing recruiting and scouting as well as working with face-off men, midfielders, attackers, special teams and running the substitution box. He also has worked as a teacher and coach for the LEAPS Foundation, which enriches the lives of youths through lacrosse and education. Dunn competed four years for Cabrini and graduated with a B.A. in History in 2004. He also received his Master’s in Education from Cabrini in 2009.

Michael Bassani, a former Widener standout, is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Bassani comes off a two-year career in which he totaled 29 goals, 13 assists and 42 points. He closed 2011 with 13 goals and 22 points in being named second team All-Middle Atlantic Conference and helping the Pride win the MAC title. In 2012, he amassed 16 goals and 20 points as Widener won the Commonwealth Conference crown. Bassani graduated Widener in 2012 with a degree in Accounting.

Nick Politarhos, one of the greatest players in the history of the program, is in his second season as an assistant coach for Wid-ener. Politarhos quite simply put together a solid career as a shut-down defenseman and an all-around leader. He was a three-time first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection and in 2011 was named second team ECAC South/Metro All-Region. Politarhos also was a two-time Preseason Honorable Mention All-America according to Inside Lacrosse Magazine. He played on three conference champions, leading Widener to a school-record 15 victories and a 13-game winning streak in 2011. Politarhos also was a two-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll and in 2009 was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. Politarhos graduated Widener in 2011 with a degree in Hospitality Management.

Dave DiPaola is in the second year of his second stint as an assistant coach for the Pride and his fourth year overall. He previously coached from 2008-10, helping the squad to two Middle Atlantic Conference titles. DiPaola arrived after serving two years as an assistant coach for Radnor High School. He also was a camp counselor for the Sting Lacrosse Camp in Radnor and for West Chester University. DiPaola was a three-time All-America for Salisbury University (1999-2001), was tabbed Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2001 and helped the Seagulls win the 1999 NCAA championship. DiPaola is no stranger to the area, being named an All-America at Springfield High School in 1996. He continues competitive play with one of the local teams as a defender and longstick midfielder.

Assistant Coaches

duties for other sports and developed the Spartan Academic Greatness plan to help guide his student-athletes. He also served one year as an assistant coach at Dickinson in 2009 and was a graduate assistant coach at Salisbury in 2007 and 2008. Dawson had a strong four-year career at Salisbury, helping the team to Division III NCAA championships in 2003 and 2004. He was named first team All-Capital Athletic Conference in 2002, was a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2003-04, was picked team captain his last two years and helped the Seagulls notch a 58-7 record during his time. Dawson graduated Salisbury in 2004 with a B.A. in History and Political Science. He got his M.A. in Teaching from Salisbury in 2008.
