Movember Movement

Movember is a global movement that works to raise awareness of the issues in men’s health. The name Movember comes from the idea of Moustache November, or Movember. The idea behind Movember is that on November 1, men start with a clean-shaven

face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorships for their Mo-growing efforts.

The Berry College Men’s Lacrosse team effectively became walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November 2014. By growing a Mo, they raised awareness, prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

Funds raised in the U.S. support prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and the men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and liveSTRONG.

2015 Season Preview

Unfinished business drives the Berry College men’s lacrosse program. The Vikings return their largest senior class to date and feature a slew of talented youngsters who seek the NCAA bid that has eluded them the last two seasons.

The 2014 season featured Berry College’s first graduating senior class and was Head Coach Curtis Gilbert’s first season at the helm. Gilbert has witnessed player confidence grow with the team’s new system and expectations.

“This season is going to be different,” said Gilbert. “I sensed a shift in focus from the very first week on campus. Our seniors have been outstanding this past fall and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for these young men.”

The competitive Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has sent two teams to the NCAA tournament for the past two seasons. Berry College has been on the outside looking in the past two years.

“We are built for this season,” Gilbert said. “We have a strong out of conference schedule to get us ready for SAA play. We have 10 seniors and our expectation is to make the NCAA tournament.”

As a former defenseman, Gilbert likes to boast about his defense. His veteran unit features captain and SAA first team selection Jack Chase (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and four other seniors: Jake Lane (Marietta, Ga./Harrison HS), Patrick Towner (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity), Nate Mayer (Palm Har-bor, Fla./Palm Harbor Univ.), and Clayton McGlasson (Nashville, Tenn./Ensworth). Lane earned SAA second team honors in 2014.

Leading the Junior class is goalkeeper Nick Voso (Peachtree City, Ga./Blue Ridge). Voso played in seven games between the pipes last year and posted a 5.6 goals against average and a save per-centage of 72.7. Aiding the defensive unit are junior Garrett Miller (Duluth, Ga./ Peachtree Ridge), sophomores James Kurila (Oveido, Fla./Paul J. Haggerty), Cole Sommi (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut), and Andrew Nix (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain).

The offensive end of the field will feature captain Cory Hall (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge). Hall was an SAA first team selection in 2014 and is the program’s career leader in points-per-game (3.36).

Hall is supported on attack by fellow senior Grant Phillips (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), Junior Jake Emche (Berlin, Md./Worcester Prep) and sophomore Miller Hollstein (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge).

The midfield looks equally strong with a trio of Senior’s in Maxwell Smerka (Hartford, Ga./North-gate), Michael Harper (Marietta, Ga./Walton), and Kyle Lombardi (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell). Additional support in the midfield will come from junior Christian Akers (Roanoke, Va. /Roanoke Catholic). Akers and Smerka were SAA first team selections last year.

Gilbert was impressed with the performances by some new faces this past fall, which include two transfers: Sophomores Quentin Johnson (Alpharetta, Ga./ Chattahoochee) and Phillip Yount (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier). Recently a mid-year addition has added depth in the midfield in Don McIl-wain (Alexdria, VA/ West Potomac)

The Freshmen class has already showcased impressive performances from Michael Troy (Lake Grove, N.Y./Ward Melville), Jacob Kaplan (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Christian), Matt Bentley (Salem, Va./Salem), Matt Dominguez (Suwanee, Ga./ Peachtree Ridge), Duncan Tilka (Jacksonville Beach, Fla./Providence), Chris Ferguson (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona), Juan Castilla (Suwanee, Ga./Chattahoochee), Paolo Falzi (Airdrie, Alberta, Canada/St. Martin DePorres), and Stephen Galloway (Marietta, Ga./Hillgrove).

After a strong showing this past fall, the 2015 Berry squad is preparing for the season. After a series of scrimmages, Berry hosts Young Harris College at Kennesaw State Stadium on February 14th at 10 a.m. The Vikings and Mountain Lions play prior to a rematch of the Division I National semifi-nal between Denver and Duke.

Curtis GilbertCoach Gilbert enters his second year as the head coach of the Berry Men’s Lacrosse team after a very successful first year where the Vikings reached the Conference Semi-Finals. With the addition of some strong opponents to the

schedule the Vikings are looking to take a step up this season.

Coach Gilbert was hired after serving as head coach for six years at New England College in Henniker, NH. He led the Pilgrams in 2013 to a runner up finish in the North Atlantic Conference. In 2012 he led NEC into the DIII Men’s Lacrosse Tournament after winning the programs first North Atlantic Conference Championship. In the first two years in the NAC Coach Gilbert had 20 players honored for All- Conference Honors. Coach Gilbert’s teams at NEC played in the championship games four of his six years. He also coached two All-Americans which was a first in the NEC program’s history and two players drafted into the NLL.

Prior to NEC, Gilbert was an assistant lacrosse coach at Denison University in Granville, OH. During his time at Denison the Big Red won two NCAC Championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Coach Gilbert has also coached at Washington College where the team went 28-8 with a school record 15 game winning streak. He was also an assistant at Whittier College where the Poets went 21-3 making two NCAA Tournment appereances losing in the quater and semi finals.

Coach Gilbert is a graduate of Washington College where he won a NCAA National Championship.

Meet the Head Coach

Meet the Assistant CoachesReed Peterson comes to Berry after four years at Centre College. While there, he was the defensive coordinator of a defense that held teams to a 20 percent conversion rate on 124 penalties, caused 190 turnovers and scored nine man down goals in 2014. Centre earned bids to two consecutive NCAA tour-naments in 2013 and 2014. From 2012-2013 Centre had a 15 game home winning streak. Peterson will oversee the Vikings offense and recruiting efforts for the 2015 season. Coach Peterson played for two legendary coaches, Randy Mearns (Canisius) and Jack McGetrick (Bellarm-ine). Peterson is a 2009 graduate of Bellarmine University where he majored in Communication. Ken Byers returns for his fourth year as an as-sistant coach for Berry College. Prior to BC Byers established a nationally recognized MCLA program at Kennesaw State University. His six year KSU career record is 61-28. Coach Byers was selected as the SELC “Coach of the Year” in 2009 and 2011. His 2010 KSU squad was awarded the James “Ace” Adams award for sportsmanship. Before his tenure at KSU, Byers started the program at Etowah High School compiling a record of 45-22. He was an assistant coach at Roswell HS from 1999-2001, earning a public HS Championship in 1999. Coach Byers played for national junior college powerhouse Suffolk Community College on Long Island and completed his collegiate career as a defenseman at Kutztown State in Pennsylvania. Coach Byers is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance and has been a certified lacrosse official. He was inducted into the Georgia Lacrosse Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments to the sport of lacrosse in the state of Georgia. In addition to that he has completed over 31 years of service as a member of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. He retired as an Assistant Chief and shift commander. Men’s Lacrosse Trainer

Josh Dollahite is from San Jose, Calif. and joined Berry College’s Sports Medicine staff in 2011. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from the California State University, Fresno in 2011 and Master’s Degree in Educa-tion from Berry College in 2013.His primary responsibilities are with the with men’s soccer, women’s basketball, and men’s lacrosse teams. While in the athletic training program at Fresno, he did rotations with the football, cross-country/track, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and volleyball teams. Prior to CSUF, Josh became a Certified Massage Therapist and health educator. Outside of the athletic training world, he served as the Program Director at Camp Oljato, a Boy Scout summer camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Meet the Captains Jack Chase – Leading by example through hard work, determination, and self-motivation has established Jack as the leader of the Defense. Chase is the heart and soul of the Vikings defense and has been for the past three seasons. Chase’s leadership is the most vocal on the team, and expects top efforts from not only himself, but all those around him. Jack is a dual major in both Mar-keting and Management and interned with Redmond Hospital in the Marketing and PR department. Jack has played in 47 games in his career totaling 4 goals, 2 assists and 143 ground balls. He has also caused 44 turnovers in his career as a starting defenseman. Jack was voted 1st Team All-SAA in 2013 and 2014.

Cory Hall – Defined by his insa-tiable desire for success, Cory is one of the toughest attackmen Gilbert has ever worked with and one of the best in the SAA. He has been a staple at the Attack position since his Freshman campaign and has the uncanny ability to both initiate and finish the offensive possesions. His leadership style can be defined by his tireless work ethic, where he remains approachable, yet incredibly focused. Cory is a Business major and interned last summer with a company in Canada. Cory has played in 47 games in his career totaling 121 goals, 37 assists and 96 ground balls. He has a career shooting percentage of 63%. Cory was voted 1st Team All-SAA in 2014 and 2nd Team All-SAA in 2013.

Clayton McGlasson #2– A standout Football and Lacrosse player in High School, McG-lasson quickly made his impact known at the Defensive Midfield position. He is one of the strongest players on the team and prides himself on individual effort. His leadership style is quiet, yet assertive. Clayton is an Exercise Science major.

Grant Phillips #10– As a member of a Florida State Championship team, Phillips has brought that winning attitude and drive into the Berry program. His early years saw time at the attack, and recently moved into a dependable role in the Midfield. His leadership style is playful, yet incredibly focused. Phillips is majoring in Marketing.

Max Smerka #12– Possessing one of the hardest shots on the team, Max has the ability to score from anywhere. Known for his athleticism and stickwork, he is also an incredible athlete with equally solid fundamentals. His leadership style is stoic, yet boisterous when needed. Max is a Communciations major.

Jake Lane #16– Pound for pound one of the strongest players on the team, Jake’s work ethic is paramount and infectious. Lane consistently guards players of all sizes and handles his matchups well. His leadership style is ‘blue-collar’ and is a dual major in both Biochemistry and Mathematics.

Michael Harper #20 – Initially recruited at the Goalie position after winning a Georgia State Championship, he was quickly converted into a Midfielder once in college because of his athleticism and high Lacrosse ‘IQ’. His leadership style is reserved, yet when he speaks, people listen. Harper is an Exercise Science major.

Nate Mayer #23– Exceptional athleticism and an incredible work ethic in the weightroom and on the field has transformed Mayer into a utility player on the defensive unit. Mayer has spent time at Close Defense, LSM, and recently at the Defensive Midfield position. His leader-ship style is passionate and is a dual major in Economics and Mathematics.

Patrick Towner #24 – Physically imposing defines Towner’s large presence on Defense, where he plays bruising defense, yet has a rare ability to cover players on the perimeter as well. His leadership style is humble yet accountable and is one of the most selfless players on the squad. Towner is majoring in Business Marketing.

Kyle Lombardi #30 – Initially recruited to play the LSM position, he quickly transformed into a staple at the Offensive end of the field, due to his athleticism and quick hands. Lombar-di’s leadership style can be described as modest but determined. He majors in Mathematics and will pursue an Engineering Degree in his Graduate studies.
