COACHING STAFF

Brent Jacquette • Head Coach

Assistant Coaches Jeff Warwick is in his sixth year as an assistant coach for the Pride. Warwick began his coaching career in 1998 as an instructor at youth camps for the STARS Soccer Academy, Elizabethtown Soccer School and the Philadelphia KIXX Kamps. His first stint as a Widener assistant coach took place in 2002 under then head coach Fred Dohrmann. Since that time, he has served as goalkeeper instructor and coach for the Ridley United Soccer Club. Warwick arrived after playing two seasons of college ball in goal. He led Mercer County Community College to the 1998 NJCAA semifinals one year after competing for Elizabethtown College. At Palmyra (NJ) High School, Warwick was a three-time all-state, all-conference and all-division player. He played for the New Jersey state team in 1996 and 1997. Warwick works as a sales representative for Edy’s Grand Ice Cream. He lives in Ridley Park, PA with his wife, Meghan, and sons, Connor and Nathan.

Doug Gabel, one of the Pride’s hardest working and most dedicated players, is in his third season as an assistant coach for his alma mater. A two-time player of the year as selected by the team and having started all 71 games he competed in, Gabel helped the Pride compete in the 2008 Commonwealth Conference final and the ECAC South Tournament. As a sophomore in 2006, he played a key role in Widener finishing second in the league and hosting a league tournament game for the first time. As a senior and tri-captain, Gabel was named second team all-conference and was selected to the league’s Fall Sportsmanship Teams. Gabel is a three-year member of the Middle Atlantic Con-ference Academic Honor Roll and in 2007 was picked to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. He also has competed for the Hulmeville, YMS and FC Coppa club teams. Gabel graduated with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy and is employed as a physical therapist with a major hospital system in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Jesse Zafiratos is in his first season as an assistant coach for Widener. His main responsibilities include recruiting and working pri-marily with the forwards. Zafiratos is a 2002 Interboro High School graduate where he was a three-time All-Del Val Conference selection, and an All-Area Selection by the Philadelphia Inquirer. After his senior year he was chosen to participate in the all city-suburban game, as well as the F.C. Delco College Night game. He played collegiately at La Roche College, where he led the team in total points per game in 2004 that included a five-game consecutive goal scoring streak. In 2006 as a senior, he was named team captain and led the squad in assists. He has coached at the club level with the Beadling Soccer Club, along with West Chester United, Hotspurs, and the Lansdowne Soccer Club. Zafiratos resides in Lansdowne.

Matt Poole is in his first year as an assistant coach for Widener. Poole last year was a volunteer assistant coach at Drexel. He also has coached youth teams in Nether Providence and has his NSCAA national diploma. Poole was a four-year player at Virginia, starting 78 of the 83 games he played in. He helped the Cavaliers reach the national semifinals in 2006 and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team in 2008. He also was named first team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and participated in the 2009 Major League Soccer Combine.

Widener men’s soccer coach Brent

Jacquette, in his third year, looks to

make sure the team stays the course

in search of its first Commonwealth

Conference title. The talent is in place

as he hopes to attain this goal.

Jacquette took over after serving two

seasons as an assistant. The 2008 campaign was a magical one as the

Pride upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the conference semifinals

and competed in the ECAC South Tournament. The nine victories

was the most since the 2004 squad picked up 10.

The Wallingford, PA native competed in the United Soccer Leagues

with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2003 and the Minnesota Thunder

in 2004.

Jacquette holds a USSF “A” License and an NSCAA Premier

Diploma. He also is an NSCAA Associate Staff Coach.

Jacquette also enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career, being

named All-America and two-time All-Big Ten Conference defender

at Penn State. He was tabbed a Collegiate MVP by Soccer America

in 2002 and was selected to participate in the Major League Soccer

combine in 2003.

He was a four-year starter and also a captain, graduating in fewer

than four years with a B.A. in Telecommunications in December

2002. Jacquette’s wealth of experience also includes training with

FC St. Pauli in Germany.

He founded Get Ahead Soccer, which developed youth soccer

programs, camps and clinics, and organized the staff to conduct train-

ing sessions. Jacquette also was a co-director of sports operations at

Tri State Sports, helping develop a marketing plan for youth leagues

and overseeing scheduling, staffing and billing of the complex. He

also worked as a region manager at Time Warner, overseeing magazine

sales in five states.

Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its seventh year as home of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. The move was made following the installment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. The stadium also had a new scoreboard installed and the locker rooms were refurbished that year. Seating for over 4,000 spectators is avail-able. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s conference championship men’s lacrosse and track & field squads.

PREVIEW

It has been a long journey for Widener’s men’s soccer team, but the pieces are starting to come into place for a squad on the verge of

competing for a Commonwealth Conference title. The Pride hope the play of 21 returnees as well as some talented newcomers paves the

way for what should be a successful campaign.

One of the keys to that success is junior DJ DiPaola, who last season was picked second team All-Commonwealth Conference. A talented

forward and one the team will look to this season, the Havertown native led the team with three assists and 39 shots.

Gareth Cooper has been a strong competitor the last three years and looks to go out with a bang his senior campaign. He closed the

2010 season third on the team with three goals and tied for fourth with six points.

Derek Brubaker gave Widener plenty of reason for optimism a season ago, pacing the team with 10 points and finishing tied for the lead

with four goals. Senior Dan Lorenzet was tied for the team lead with four goals and sophomore Anthony Pezzotti scored once last season.

Both look to provide more production at forward.

Widener hopes to get more production at midfield from seniors Michael McNally and Rich Romano, junior Joe Brydges as well as

sophomores Dan Koch and Emmette Kemokai.

The defense got some key play a season ago from juniors Drew Hilinski and Kevin Martin along with sophomores Cody Schulte, Matt

Montera and Matt Parrotta. This defense led the way to four shutouts last year, including two over the first three matches.

Sophomore Jakub Valdner stepped in at goalkeeper last season and played solidly, ending fifth in the conference with 3.45 saves per game.

Senior Ryan Frantz as well as sophomore Dan Price each look for time between the pipes.

The Pride have seven newcomers that include Ross Caruso, Troy Czapor, Eric Gerlach, Niko Karolidis, Nic Salvemini, Ryan Sharp, and

Sumo Yarkpawolo.

Widener opens the campaign September 3 against Rutgers-Camden as part of its annual trip to the Swarthmore Garnet Alumni Classic.

Conference play starts September 30 against Messiah and concludes October 29 at Albright.

The squad makes a return trip to PPL Park this season, taking on Lycoming on October 7 as part of a doubleheader with the women’s

team. Widener is the official University sponsor of the Union, PPL Park and the Union’s Youth Soccer Partners.

The league’s top four teams compete in the conference tournament, which is from November 2-5.
