Wide Bay Whisper Swimmer - September 2011
Congratulations to Jack Burnham!
Jack represents Mountain Creek Mooloolaba Makos and
is coached by Barry Kime.
Jack is 17 years old and has taken to swimming in the
open water. His dedication and development has been
outstanding.
Here are some important questions answered by Jack:
When and where was your first carnival?
Maleny - I was 12
What is your favourite training set?
Over distance sets
Do you have a swimming nickname from your coach or swimming buddies?
No - Jack is a nickname actually. My real name is John - but I'm never called John - always
Jack.
Your best race so far?
The 10k is my best race. I won bronze at the Australian Open Water Champs in March
and then won the 5 and 10 k double at the Arafura Games in May.
Which are your favourite movies?
Any of the Terminator movies
What do think about on those long races you swim?
I think about getting into a rhythm, maintaining good technique, getting into a good position in the pack and strategies for
getting in to and away from the feeding pontoon efficiently.
I like the 5k but I LOVE the 10k
Which 3 famous people would you
like to invite over for dinner?
Melissa Gorman, Geoff Huegill and
Matthew Reilly (Australian writer)
Your favourite band/song?
Favourite bands are Born of Osiris
and A Day to Remember.
Your best subject at school?
English and Biology Do you have a special pet?
I have a dog called Macca. He's a
greyhound/bull terrier cross and a
great dog. Sadly, he doesn't really
like the water.
How do you prepare/warm up for your long open water races?
Preparation starts a long way out from a big race with lots of
training and lots of distance work.
In the days leading up to a big race I start hydrating and
carbohydrate loading. The afternoon before a 10K race I rest and
get to eat some jelly lollies to get some energy on board.
Then after the race there's an easy couple of k warm down and an
ice bath. Brrrrrrrrr!!!
Who is your swimming idol?
Melissa Gorman because she's a fantastic open water swimmer
and also really down to earth and easy to talk to.
And while he's not an idol as such, I think about an American open
water swimmer called Fran Crippen a lot. Fran Crippen died during
a 10k race in October last year in the United Arab Emirates. His
death kind of reminds us all that open water swimming can be
a dangerous affair.
Where is one place you haven't and would like to swim?
I've been lucky because swimming has taken me lots of places - I've
been to Melbourne and Sydney for nationals, Darwin for the
Arafura Games and I've also swum at the NZ and Fiji National open
water champs.
Next year I'm off to Perth for nationals and am planning to swim a
couple of ocean races in Vanuatu. I would really like to swim the
Waikiki Rough Water in Hawaii as well.
How do you like to have fun with your swimming?
I've made good friends through swimming - at my own club but
also have friends from lots of other clubs as well. Being able to
socialise with other swimmers is great. Plus I get to visit lots of
interesting places because of swimming - that's an added bonus.
What is the most unusual experience you have had racing in open
water?
In Darwin the buoys drifted and we actually swam closer to 11 km
than the usual 10. After the race we found out that we swam right
down to the permanent crocodile traps in Lake Bennett. Lucky I
only found out after the race!
Thank you Jack for all your
interesting and informative
answers! Wide Bay Swimming
can’t wait to hear of your racing in
Perth and Vanuatu!

The Wide Bay Region was out in force at the
Swimming Queensland AGM on Sunday 31st
July at the
Nudgee Golf Club. This AGM was a feel good festival
for all the hard work of the members of the
committee with a wealth of information about the
previous seasons exploits. Wide Bay sends
congratulations to Mr John Keppie for being voted in
as the 2011/12 President for SQ. Mr John Keppie is
pictured left having a chat to the great Thorpedo and
we can only wonder what might have been said!?
Tech Offs Tip Offs!
Wide Bays special Tech Off, Dale Cox, having a light
hearted chat to some of our little swimmers learning
the correct way to swim their individual medley turns
at the Maryborough carnival August 2011.
Two of our wonderful Tech Offs are off to Brisbane on
the 3rd
September to one of Swimming Qld workshops.
Bill Giles and Debbie Cox are attending for the
opportunity to gain some up to date information of
stroke and turning rules and regs.
Wide Bays next Forum on Sunday 11th
September will
be hosting a Tech Offs meeting so make a date in your
diaries to come along, enjoy some swimming
community spirit and help your little swimmers!
Sept Funky Forum! Wide Bay is the only regional association in Queensland that gives clubs the opportunity to provide feedback, contribute
and enhance the swimming community by providing 4 free quarterly forums.
These forums are a must for all our clubs in the area. Clubs have the advantage of knowing that the swimmers and their
families are ‘in the loop’ with everything happening in the Wide Bay region. Only 2 representatives can attend from each
club however extra attendance can be purchased.
Forums start with a warm welcome from the committee at the Gympie Conference Centre. Morning tea (usually the
yummiest scones!) and lunch is provided (a fabulous feed!).
By attending, clubs can know the details of holding their own carnivals, have their swimmers attend the development
camps, informative and fun swimming related presenters and small intimate workshops on how to manage and make your
club successful!
Your next forum
is Sunday 11th
September!
