Level 4 Locating patterns - Begin to recognise patterns of obvious distributions of places and how

they are connected.

Teacher says: Draws a sketch map (without colour) but does use a range of symbols (6) labelled in a key.The writing links the places to the volcano and recognises the lahar hazard will follow the floodplain down river. Recognises the pattern that low ground is most at risk.

Locating Places

Locate places accurately, use map co-ordinates, understand distance and direction and draw maps with a sense of scale and proportion.

Describe obvious geographical patterns and how places are interconnected.

Teacher Says: accurate sketch map with a scale and proportion. Includes a key and direction arrow.

Writing recognises safety with higher ground (green). Pink highlighting recognises the pattern of danger to all flat land from lahar flows and this danger would come from the nearby Mt. Rainier (interconnection).

Teacher Says:

The sketch map is accurate and clear with scale and key (but not co-ordinates or direction). Clearly marks the town and the bluffs and refers to them in the text demonstrating understanding of the map.

The writing identifies and describes the pattern of high risk on the flood plain (also Terminology) and clearly interconnects the volcano, the floods and the areas at risk with advice to move to bluffs (Terminology).

The pattern of danger on the low ground (Flood plain) and relative safety (bluffs) is well explained using technical terms (orange highlighted) . With further interconnection of danger down valley (highlighted in pink).
