1200m) at his most recent start on 29 October. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-time stakes-placed

mare Kimberley Star (Star Witness) finished second with the unraced High Heaven (High Chaparral), from the Anthony Cummings stable, in third.

Co-owner China Horse Club’s Michael Wallace told ANZ Bloodstock News the autumn preparation of Russian Revolution was about enhancing his value as a stallion.

“We are very happy. He trialled up in a manner we have become accustomed to,” Wallace said.

“He did so much in one preparation (winning his first four starts) and then he went down to Melbourne and was only narrowly beaten in what was probably one of the strongest Coolmores there has been for many a year.

“We feel he is right up to that mark, so we will head towards The Galaxy with him and I’m sure he’ll acquit himself very well there.”

Wallace said Russian Revolution had developed significantly after a spell and was confident the colt could measure up against older horses during the autumn.

“I popped into Peter and Paul’s stables the other day and had a look at him and the first thing you notice is when he comes out of the box is that he’s not a three-year-old sort of horse any more, he’s really turned into a man,” he said.

“He’s developed well and we are really encouraged by that. He’s got

a great frame of mind and temperament and that should help him (this campaign).”

Russian Revolution was a $320,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by China Horse Club from the draft of Vinery Stud, with Wallace securing his half-sister by Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) for $300,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.

China Horse Club also has shares in Group One-winning three-year-old Mick Price-trained colts Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Flying Artie (Artie Schiller), who resumes in tomorrow’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington.

Extreme Choice is set to resume in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield on 25 February and Wallace said it was possible the Blue Diamond Stakes winner, Flying Artie and Russian Revolution could clash in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on 1 April.

“The T J Smith is where they could come together, but there’s plenty of water to go under the bridge before then obviously for all three colts,” he said.

“Clashes can occur but we have a plan mapped out for each of them up until that point.”

China Horse Club also had the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old colt Assimilate (Sebring) have his first barrier trial this preparation over 736 metres in heat 14.

was given an easy time by jockey Blake Shinn, finishing fourth behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained trio Our Crown Mistress (Star Witness), Lankan Pharaoh (All Too Hard) and Leningrad (Snitzel).

Taking on the colts and geldings, Our Crown Mistress closed impressively under Jay Ford to win by three and a quarter lengths in 43.10 seconds on a Soft 6 surface.

“Assimilate wasn’t out to break the clock, particularly being his first trial (this preparation) and he is one of quite a few two-year-olds of ours who could step out during the carnival and also Brisbane,” Wallace said.

Also trialling at Randwick yesterday was the John Thompson-trained Group Two-winning mare Zanbagh (Bernardini) finished strongly to win heat two over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Shinn, Zanbagh settled off the pace before sprinting home to defeat the James Cummings-trained Most Exalted (Street Cry) by a length.

“We thought both her trials this prep would have to be the best we’ve seen her trial. The way she attacked the line today shows she still has a great zest for racing,” Thompson’s racing manager Robyn Hartney told ANZ Bloodstock News.

Shinn said: “She showed a nice turn of foot when the gap appeared and I think she’s coming up really well and is in for a good preparation.”

Zanbagh will resume in the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on 25 February, a race she finished second in last year, before heading to the Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy Stakes) (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on 11 March.

In heat three, the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Raphael’s Cat (Redoute’s Choice) won his second barrier trial this preparation over 1050 metres with Tye Angland in the saddle.

The four-year-old entire, who has won two of his six starts and was placed in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) behind Kinglike (Exceed And Excel) as a three-year-old, has not raced since last November when unplaced.

It was Raphael’s Cat’s only start last campaign and was first up for 56 weeks on that occasion.

No Trial For Star Juvenile HoutzenMeanwhile, trainer Toby Edmonds told ANZ Bloodstock News

yesterday that Magic MIllions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible) would not barrier trial prior to her first up run in early March.

The brilliant undefeated filly, who led all the way to win the $2,000,000 Magic MIllions 2YO Classic on 14 January at the Gold Coast, will have just one lead up start into the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill on 18 March.

Edmonds has options at Eagle Farm and Randwick on 4 March or the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Canberra on 5 March earmarked for Houtzen.

“The trials don’t fit in at the moment, so we probably won’t give her one (prior to her first up run,” Edmonds said yesterday.

“It’ll give us three tracks to choose from. She could run in Brisbane, but it depends how hot it is. If it rains in Sydney then she’ll run in Brisbane and vice versa if it’s going to 40 degrees in Brisbane then we might go down there.”

Edmonds has kept a close eye on the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contenders emerging in recent weeks but remains steadfast in his opinion of Houtzen.

“I’m pretty comfortable with where we are at with Houtzen ability wise,” he said.

“We are always worried about the opposition, but our filly is certainly up to them, so we aren’t frightened of them.

“She’s done super. She’s bomb proof and quite easy to train.” Edmonds is also considering sending lightly raced three-year-old filly

Ahndras (Smart Missile) to Sydney for the autumn carnival.Ahndras has won her past three starts, stepping up to metropolitan

Saturday company in Brisbane last start and winning by three quarters of a length over 1630 metres at Doomben last Saturday.

“We could possibly Ahndras to Sydney. She has won three in a row and is going well and we have her nominated for the ATC Oaks,” he said.

Price Pleased With Flying Artie ConditionTrainer Mick Price feels that Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) has developed into a mature colt ahead of this weekend’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m). The Group One winner Flying Artie took out the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at his last start on 29 October and is the $4.60 favourite for the $750,000 feature with CrownBet. "I think he's come of age a bit,” Price said. “I think he's improved. And he looks fantastic. He's a big, strong, autumn three-year-old now."

Pride Confident In Proven TerravistaWarwick Farm trainer Joe Pride says his Black Caviar Lightning Stakes runner Terravista (Captain Rio) has proven himself at the top level against open age but many of the horse’s rivals at Flemington tomorrow have not. Seven-year-old gelding Terravista had two starts during the spring and resumes in the Group One sprint with Corey Brown in the saddle. "There's (Flying Artie and Star Turn), and there's Spieth and Supido, who are emerging horses as well,” Pride told Racing.com. "What we find every year is there are booms on these horses,

and whether or not they make that top level (remains to be seen). This time last year it was all about Exosphere, and Exosphere faded out very quickly.”

Lightning Runners Out To Emulate SiresBlack Caviar Lightning Stakes contenders Faatinah (Nicconi) and Missrock (Fastnet Rock) are out to emulate their sires in Saturday’s Group One feature. Nicconi (Bianconi) won the 1000 metre race in 2010, while Coolmore stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was successful in 2005. Faatinah’s co-trainer David Hayes said the four-year-old was not as talented as his father but added that he had earned his place in the line-up. "I don't think he's as good as his dad," Hayes said. "But Lightning does strike twice, doesn't it. He's a dual Group Two winner, so he's earned his spot in it. It's a very good Lightning, but an even one."

Legless Veuve To Cement Guineas PlansGroup Two winner Legless Veuve (Pins) is set to go on trial for the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) this weekend. The Stuart Webb-trained filly is set to face nine rivals in the Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Saturday and is likely to head to the Group One at Randwick on 4 March if performing with credit. she's a high-class filly who is hitting a medium year," Webb said. "There are no stand outs (for the Guineas), and the stand outs that are there are probably in Sydney. But we'll get through Saturday first. She would still want to be very good again to warrant (a Guineas run)."

McEvoy Stablemates To Clash In C S HayesThe Tony McEvoy-trained pair Hey Doc (Duporth) and Silvera (High Chaparral) are both set to commence their autumn preparations in the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Saturday. Hey Doc won the Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley in September, while the Listed winner Silvera finished tenth in the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at his last start. "He's come on beautifully since his first-up run and I'm really looking forward to seeing him at Flemington on Saturday,” McEvoy said of Hey Doc. "(Silvera) will need a couple of runs and to get out to 1800 (metres) or 2000 and that's when we can start to make (future) decisions."

Blue Diamond Test For Something VioletSomething Violet (Commands) will need to turn in a dominant performance in Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on Saturday if Robbie Griffiths is to give her the go ahead for a Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) tilt. The filly won

on debut over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley on 3 February, though her trainer feels there are other Blue Diamond contenders who are more forward than her at this stage. "If she jumped, travels and does everything right and wins easily then we'll have to work out whether we take the seven-day back-up into the Diamond," Griffiths said. "Some of the other fillies, and colts, are more advanced than her heading towards the Diamond.” Click here to view the Flemington acceptances.

Single Gaze Ready For Long-Awaited ReturnCanberra trainer Nick Olive says patience will hopefully pay off with Group One winner Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt), whose spring was abandoned as a result of a fall in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) last April. The now four-year-old, who has had two Canberra barrier trials this preparation, resumes in tomorrow’s Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill tomorrow. “There was nothing obvious and we could have gone on but I think it was the right decision to miss the spring,” Olive said. “She looks fantastic now and I couldn’t be happier with her. She hasn’t taken a backward step and her trials have been good.” Click here to view the Rosehill acceptances.

Australian Cup Trial For Sky KingdomSky Kingdom (Montjeu) will put his Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) credentials to the test over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The colt, who was a Group Three winner in Europe for trainer William Haggas, finished ninth in the Sunshine Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m) on his first start for Gold Coast-based Garry Newham, and his trainer feels he will need to win well this weekend to warrant a step up in class. "You have to nominate early for those big races and he is in the Australian Cup. (Owner Paul Makin) was talking about the Chipping Norton Stakes in Sydney next week," Newham said. "But Sky Kingdom will want to win and win well at Eagle Farm before we talk about taking on Winx, Hartnell and the like."

Step Up In Grade For BosanovaGold Coast trainer Mel Eggleston believes tomorrow’s three-year-old race at Eagle Farm will give him a guide to how good his

filly All Over Bosanova (Court Command) is. Unbeaten in three starts, All Over Bosanova makes her metropolitan debut in the Three-Year-Old Hcp (1200m) at Eagle Farm. She has won twice at the Gold Coast and at Ipswich over short courses but Eggleston is confident she will handle the step up to 1200 metres. "She deserves a chance in town. It is a tough race because all Brisbane three-year-old races seem to have plenty of depth," Eggleston said. "But you have to find out sooner or later."

Charnley River Out to Break MaidenThe Group One-placed Charnley River (Show A Heart) is out to break his maiden at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The Stuart Kendrick-trained colt ran second to Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi) in the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last season, but has yet to win in seven career starts. "He has had a jump-out and then worked strongly in an exhibition gallop between races at the Sunshine Coast last Friday," Kendrick said. "Three-year-old races in Brisbane are usually the strongest on the card and it is no different this Saturday. If he can race well we might even look at going south for some of the autumn races with him. There is no doubt he has the ability."

Wide Draw Dents Hansen’s ConfidenceA wide barrier draw has dented some of trainer Darryl Hansen’s confidence of Divine Service (Haradasun) landing the hat-trick at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The gelding has won his last two starts, at the Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm respectively, and has drawn barrier nine for jockey Luke Tarrant in the $60,000 Jim Beam Open Handicap (1200m). “I’m confident he’ll run very well again but I would have been more confident of him winning had he drawn a little better,” Hansen said. Click here to view the Eagle Farm acceptances.

Skyline For MenariTrainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed that Menari (Snitzel) is on course for a tilt at the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday week. The colt lost his unbeaten record when an unlucky second behind Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at his last start, and Rosehill-based Ryan said

Menari would have a hit out this morning to tune him up for next weekend’s Group Two. Ryan also said that Chauffeur (Snitzel) will be aimed towards the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on 4 March, while Condor Heroes (Not A Single Doubt) will head to the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Canberra the following day.

21st Juvenile Winner For Snitzel The extraordinary run of juvenile success this season by Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) continued at Newcastle yesterday when the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Hypnotist won on debut in a 1350 metre two-year-old maiden. A NZ$240,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale graduate for James Harron Bloodstock, Hypnotist is the 21st individual juvenile winner this season for Snitzel.

Costin On Comeback TrailJockey Winona Costin is hopeful of a return to race riding in the near future. The jockey, who was the premier apprentice in Sydney in 2014-15, has not ridden since October when she was thrown from her mount and suffered concussion at Kembla Grange barrier trials. Costin has been riding track work in recent days and will take part in barrier trials in a bid to sharpen up for a return to race riding.

No Surgery For SpriggsJockey Blake Spriggs will not require surgery on a fractured knee cap. Spriggs suffered the injury to his leg, as well as a laceration to his left eye, when he was unseated from the Todd Howlett-trained Minute Silence (Snitzel) in the opening race at Hawkesbury on 9 February. However, surgeons confirmed his injury would not need an operation, though he will undergo further scans to determine how long he need to recover.

BRC To Honour Buffering With StatueThe Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) are to build a statue in honour of multiple Group One-winning sprinter Buffering (Mossman) at Eagle Farm. The gelding was trained locally by Robert Heathcote throughout his 55 start career, which included seven victories at Group One level,

Minimum Stakes Rise To NZ$10,000New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing announced on Thursday that minimum stakes in thoroughbred racing will be increased to NZ$10,000 from 1 March. This means the stakes at roughly 80 industry and Tier Two meetings with a minimum stake of NZ$7,000 or NZ$8,000 will rise. “It is time,” a statement from Alan Jackson, chairman of NZ Thoroughbred Racing, said. “This puts around NZ$1,400,000 back into the pockets of those racing horses this season and NZ$3,000,000 plus in future seasons.”

Charles Road To Step UpCo-trainers Andrew Scott and Lance O’Sullivan are hopeful of a good run from Charles Road (Myboycharlie) in the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) tomorrow. The three-year-old finished second to Camino Rocoso (Shocking) at his last start, and Scott is pleased with his condition ahead of the NZ$100,000 race. “Craig Williams got off him and said he was still very raw, but he believed he had more than his share of ability,” Scott said. “He’s coming to hand well now and holding his condition, which is important at this time of the year. He’s still improving and he’ll be going around two corners for the first time, but he’s making good progress.”

St Jean Chases BonusConnections of St Jean (Teofilo) will be hoping he can take out tomorrow’s Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) and set himself up for a NZ$1,000,000 bonus. The seven-year-old won the City of Auckland Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at his last start and could secure the seven-figure bonus if winning tomorrow and in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on 11 March. “You don’t get that opportunity very often,” said Donna Logan, who trains in partnership with Chris Gibbs. “He’s a

very smart horse. His work has been super and we are very happy with him. He’s very clean-winded and keeps himself fit and is an absolute gentleman to deal with.”

Sydney Target For Aim SmartThe Tony PIke-trained juvenile Aim Smart (Smart Missile) will put the Sydney stakes aspirations of owner China Horse Club on the line in tomorrow’s Phoenix Park 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at New Plymouth. A debut Pukekohe Park winner on 28 January, Aim Smart is entered for the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on 1 April. "His first run was very impressive and he has thrived since then so we'll head down to the Central Districts with a fair bit of confidence," CHC’s Michael Wallace said. "He will be all the better for that first race experience. He was on and off the bridle and he changed legs a bit.”

Oaks Campaign For Lady Shabeel Rotorua trainer Iain Kennedy harbours New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) ambitions for Lady Shabeel (Howbaddouwantit). The filly has been off the track since finishing eighth over 1400 metres at Arawa Park in December, and Kennedy is hopeful she can take out tomorrow’s Oaks Prelude (Listed, 1800m) at Pukekura ahead of a Classic bid. “That’s the plan and it would be lovely if she could win and then go straight to the Oaks, otherwise we might have to give her another run over 2100 metres at Ellerslie,” Kennedy said. “She’s a nice filly, but she was a bit shin sore after (her last start) so she had a bit of a break.”

Beauty Generation Pleases Purton Zac Purton believes the New Zealand-bred Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) is heading into Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) in good form. The John Moore-trained four-year-old, formerly raced as Montaigne for Anthony Cummings, ran third to stablemate Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m), the first of three legs in the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, at his

last start and Purton expects him to perform well up in trip. “The way he worked this morning (Thursday), he felt to me like a longer distance might be more suitable for him,” Purton said. “He’s had a few hiccups in his preparation along the way, so hopefully he’s got that little bit more improvement in him so that when he gets up over a distance he’s a bit more comfortable.”

Moore Confident In Rapper DragonAlongside Beauty Generation, John Moore also has Rapper Dragon in contention for the HK$10,000,000 Hong Kong Classic Cup. The gelding, who raced as Street Rapper for Gai Waterhouse earlier in this career, beat Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) by two lengths in the Hong Kong Classic Mile last month, and his trainer expects him to prove tough to beat again. “Beauty Generation might close the gap but, to me, Rapper Dragon will win the race – the way he worked this morning, as long as he gets the gate and gets the good run, he’s the one,” Moore said. “Joao (Moreira) said when he got off him that he felt like a perfectly-balanced bicycle.”

The victory also gave champion mare Zarkava (Zamindar) her first stakes success as a broodmare. The Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained colt eased clear under a hand ride from Christophe Soumillon, beating Earnshaw (Medaglia d’Oro) by one and three quarters lengths, with Godolphin’s Promising Run (Hard Spun) a further length and a half away in third. Dubawi will stand for a fee of £250,000 at Dalham Hall Stud this year, while Zarkava foaled a colt by Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) last March.

The filly, already a Group Three winner in England, was settled in behind Muffri’ha (Iffraaj) and the odds-on favourite Very Special (Lope De Vega), who was bidding to land back to back Balanchine’s, in the early stages. On turning in, Very Special weakened tamely, but Opal Tiara ran on well under Oisin Murphy and had enough in hand to fend off Via Firenze (Dansili) by a neck, with Muffri’ha a further length and a quarter away in third place.

Championship Takes Zabeel MileThe Ahmad bin Harmash-trained Championship (6 g Exceed And Excel - Aljafliyah by Halling) ran out a ready winner of the Zabeel Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Meydan on Thursday evening. The six-year-old, who took out the Al Fahidi Fort (Gr 2, 1400m) at his last start, was settled in behind the pace by jockey Colm O’Donoghue. He was travelling strongly turning into the straight and, once finding a gap, he shot clear to beat Noah From Goa (Tiger Ridge) by two and three quarter lengths, with

the Godolphin-raced Cymric (Kitten’s Joy) just a head further away in a close third.

Ertijaal Impresses In Meydan SprintThe Ali Al Rayhi-trained Ertijaal (6 g Oasis Dream - Shabiba by Seeking The Gold) ran out a dominant winner of the Meydan Sprint (Gr 3, 1000m) at Meydan on Thursday in a track record time of 55.93 seconds. The gelding, who was second to Buffering (Mossman) in last year’s Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m), raced up with the pace throughout under Jim Crowley. Once asked to quicken approaching the 400 metres, the son of Oasis Dream (Green Desert) cleared away in taking style to beat Jungle Cat (Iffraaj) by ?, with a further four lengths back to Caspian Prince (Dylan Thomas) in third.

Siljan’s Saga To IntelloDual Group Two-winning mare Siljan’s Saga (Sagamix) is set to be covered by the 2013 Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) winner and Haras Du Quesnay stallion Intello (Galileo). The seven-year-old mare, who ran fourth behind Found

(Galileo) in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) at Chantilly in October, won seven of her 30 career starts for earnings of €944,135. "She has gone to stud and she is only listed as being provisionally out of training with France-Galop in case she doesn't get in foal," her trainer Jean-Pierre Gauvin told the Racing Post. "She is due to visit Intello and she is now at Monsieur Tassin's stud near Orbec in Normandy.”

Overseas Campaign Likely For Lady AureliaThe Wesley Ward-trained Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) looks set to be campaigned overseas again this season. The three-year-old won the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot and the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) at Deauville last year and is likely to return to Ascot for the Royal meeting in June. “She's doing great. I think the strategy is race-by-race this year," co-owner George Bolton told Bloodhorse.com. "I think we want to race at Keeneland and then go over to one of the races at Ascot. Then I don't know - whether she would come back over to the States to finish her year or go back over (to Europe) to keep running.”

A sister to Lord Stakes (Listed, 1700m) winner Kenjorwood (Snippetson) has topped the 2017 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling

Sale held in Launceston yesterday at $160,000, the most expensive yearling to have been sold at the sale, far eclipsing the previous record of $115,000.

By Snippetson (Snippets), the Grenville Stud-consigned filly, catalogued as Lot 85, was sold to Leigh Winwood, a part-owner of former Tasmanian gelding Kenjorwood.

After starting his career with trainer Darren Kenny, Kenjorwood also had stints with Peter Moody and Ciaron Maher before transferring to Darren Weir.

A seven-year-old gelding, Kenjorwood is a last start winner of the Lord Stakes at Caulfield on 26 December.

The Snippetson filly is the sixth foal out of Listed placed mare Flying Diva (Flying Spur) who has had five foals to race for three winners including Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) winner Frolicked (Incumbent).

Winwood was able to hold out Star Thoroughbreds’ Denise Martin and Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer to secure the filly.

"We came to the sale with no real plan to buy her," Winwood said.

"We wanted to see her on type and she turned out to remind us so much of the brother."

"She has great presence and is a real free flowing filly - very athletic - everything you look for in a horse."

Winwood admitted the price tag required to buy the filly was well above budget.

"After seeing her today we decided we were interested and worked on a budget of $80,000. We only placed one bid at $160,000 and it did the trick," he said.

"We went well over the budget, but we just wanted to buy her - and they say you should buy the one you love, not the one that's left.”

Darren Weir will train the filly. The second highest-priced yearling sold

yesterday was Lot 63, a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) filly sold by Armidale Stud as agent to prominent syndicator Prime Thoroughbreds’ Joe O’Neill.

The filly is the second foal out of the once-raced More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Burnished, who is a daughter of 2007 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Sleek Chassis (Flying Spur). The family also includes Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Marble

Halls (Nassipour) and stakes-placed Jujube (Encosta De Lago).

Trainer John Blacker went to $90,000 to secure Lot 129, a Needs Further (Encosta De Lago) colt who was also offered by Armidale Stud.

By promising Tasmanian stallion Needs Further, whose oldest progeny are two-year-olds and include Elwick Stakes (Listed, 1100m) winning filly Pateena Arena, Lot 129 is out of three-time winner Phyl’s Choice (Savoire Vivre), whose only foal to race Moonlites Choice (Bushranger) is a juvenile winner of three races.

The Blacker-purchased filly hails from stakes-placed and 15-time winner Royal Rapture (Clangalang). A seven-year-old gelding, Royal Rapture won nine races in Tasmania before a brief stint with Peter Moody and then he joined the Weir stable last year and has gone on to win a further six races.

A half-brother to star Tasmanian filly Hot Dipped (Written Tycoon), a stakes-winning three-year-old in her home state, was purchased by her trainer Brendan McShane for $85,000.

Catalogued as Lot 88, the Statue Of Liberty (Storm Cat) yearling was sold by Reibey Lodge and is out of Strutt Stakes (Listed, 2100m) winner Galvanized (Rubiton).

The yearling is the fourth live foal for Galvanized, who has had three foals to race for a 100 per cent winning strike rate, with Hot Dipped the sole stakes winner. Hot Dipped, a winner of $294,726 in prize money, has had 11 race starts, with her only three defeats occurring during a Victorian preparation.

The leading buyer at yesterday’s sale was young Victorian trainer Matthew Brown, who bought seven yearlings for a total of $201,000.

Among Cranbourne-based Brown’s yearling purchases were Lot 123, a Needs Further filly who is a half-sister to three-time winner Insensata (Beneteau) for $60,000, and Lot 17, a colt by Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Fiorente (Monsun), catalogued as Lot 17.

The Fiorente colt was offered by Armidale Stud and is a half-brother to three winners including Singapore-performed gelding Jackpot (Artie Schiller).

Kuroshio (Exceed And Excel) finished the sale as the leading sire by average (with three or more lots sold) with all three yearlings by the sire sold for $101,000 at an average of $33,667. Sun Stud’s Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor) sat

second in the table with three yearlings sold for $96,000 at an average of $32,000.

Armidale Stud finished the day as the leading vendor by both aggregate and average having sold 35 of the 38 yearlings they offered for $1,113,500 at an average of $31,814.

Overall, yesterday’s Magic Millions

Tasmanian Yearling Sale average and median were up but the aggregate was down slightly on the 2016 sale.

There were 96 yearlings sold yesterday for $2,310,000 ($2,340,000 last year), with seven selling for $50,000 or more, with an average of $24,062 and a median of $20,000.

The clearance rate was at 78.05 per cent, down slightly from 83.47 per cent last year.

"To hold our mark on what was a spectacular sale last year is a fabulous result for the Tasmanian breeders," Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox said.

"It has become evident that mainland buyers are zeroing in on this sale with good reason following the outstanding racetrack success of previous graduates.”

Cox said buyers from interstate and Tasmanian racing owners were strongly supporting the sale.

"Today we saw the record price for a Tasmanian Yearling obliterated to $160,000 - congratulations to the McCulloch family of Grenville Stud it would be tremendously rewarding for them to attain such a result," he said.

"With the support of Tasracing we've been able to grow this sale exponentially over the last few years.”

Having become accustomed to Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) flashing home to win from seemingly impossible

positions, doubts have crept into the minds of even the keenest of his supporters when the best he has been able to do was a third in his last three starts.

But his sectional times recorded in his first up third in Saturday’s Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield suggests that the five-time Group One winner is far from a spent force.

He settled back in fifth place, one off the rails, improved rounding the home turn, briefly looking dangerous but was soon under pressure before making good late ground to take third, two lengths behind the surprise $18.00 winner Super Cash (Written Tycoon), whom he conceded 5.5 kilograms.

Connections, including jockey Dwayne Dunn, later commented that they felt Chautauqua was now looking for more distance at this stage of the six-year-old’s career.

11 of his 12 wins have been between 1000 metres and 1200 metres, but he has one win over 1400 metres, so that might well be the case but an examination of the times in the Rubiton Stakes indicate that Chautauqua, while visually somewhat disappointing, actually staged a very good first up effort.

Clocked from the 800 metre point, Chautauqua’s 200 metre breakdown was impressive, being timed to run 10.68, 11.02 (400m in 21.70), 11.10 (600m in 32.80) with his final 200 metres in 10.92 to give him a fast 43.72 for his last 800 metres.

And a time of 43.72 represents an exceptional 200 metre rate of 10.93.

In addition the overall time was a very quick 1:02.57, which was only 0.83 outside of the 1100 metre Caulfield track record which was set by Here De Angels (Dehere) in February 2010.

But while Chautauqua’s performance received a mixed reaction, that certainly was

not the case at Randwick on Monday when the champion mare Winx (Street Cry) made a brilliant return to racing in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

After a slow beginning she recovered to race in sixth place and once into clear running on straightening she raced away to score her 14th successive win in effortless fashion.

Winx has featured in On The Watch on many occasions, often clocking brilliant sectionals and she yet again produced fast times on Monday.

Clocked from the 1200 metre point, Winx returned 200 metre fractions of 10.97, 11.53 (400m in 22.50), 11.68 (600m in 34.18), 11.48 (800m in 45.66), 10.97 (1000m in 56.63) with her last 200 metres in 11.51 to give her a fast 1:08.14 for her final 1200 metres – and that was on a Good4 track.

The runner up Hartnell (Authorized) has

now finished behind Winx in all of the their five encounters but his first up effort suggested that he too looks set for a good campaign (especially if he can avoid Winx) in making ground from eighth at the 1200 metre mark to finish two and three quarter lengths behind his stunning rival, clocking an impressive 1:08.48 for that section.

In the feature race at Caulfield on Saturday, the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) recorded his fourth Group One success with an excellent second up effort in overcoming a wide trip from back in eighth place to defeat the front-running Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) by a length.

Time for the 1400 metre journey was a very smart 1:22.55 and again Black Heart Bart showed his class on the watch running his last 1200 metres in a fast 1:08.71 and last 1000 metres in 57.05.

Chautauqua’s Sectional Times Suggest That He Is Far From A Spent Force

While Turn Me Loose really showed a return to form with impressive mid-race sectionals, his 200 metre breakdown from the 1200 metres being: 11.34, 11.54 (400m in 22.88), 11.60 (600m in 34.48), 11.54 (800m in 46.02), 11.31 for a fast 1000 metre time of 57.33 (from the 1200m to the 200m) before holding on well for second.

Another to really take the eye was the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) who came with a wide run from last in the 12-horse field to finish (1.6 lengths) fourth in an excellent first up performance.

Jameka ran the fastest closing sectional times of the race with her final 1200 metres in 1:08.42, last 1000 metres in 56.79, last 800 metres in 45.32, last 600 metres in 34.00 and final 400 metres in 22.62, looking primed for a very good autumn carnival.

Several leading contenders for Saturday week’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,1200m)

also recorded very smart times at Caulfield in the Preludes to the rich race.

In the fillies’ division, the Lindsay Park-trained Catchy (Fastnet Rock) remained unbeaten after three starts in narrowly defeating Limestone (Helmet) by a short head in a time of 1:03.64 for the 1100 metre distance, which was 0.14 faster than Property (Starcraft) in winning the colts and geldings’ division.

Catchy came from sixth at the 1000 metres clocking a fast 55.41, with her last 800 metres in 44.73, last 600 metres in 33.71, last 400 metres in 22.25 and final 200 metres in 11.02.

Limestone was more handily placed in third spot on the rails, got a split to lead at the 50 metres but could not hold off the winner after running a bold race. She was timed to run her last 1000 metres in 55.81, last 800 metres in 45.08, last 600 metres in 34.00, last 400 metres in 22.31 and 11.05 for her final 200 metres.

While Property came from back in seventh

place at the 1000 metres to win the colts and geldings’ race by three-quarters of a length, clocking slightly slower sectional with his last 1000 metres in 56.01, last 800 metres in 44.87, last 600 metres in 33.94, last 400 metres in 22.28 with his final 200 metres in 11.63.

The runner up, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) impressed, after being forced to ease back when caught deep from barrier nine and he put up a very smart effort in coming from ninth at the 400 metres.

Pariah clocked 55.70 for his final 1000 metres, 44.70 (last 800m), 33.62 (last 600m) with an especially impressive final 400 metres of 21.99 and final 200 metres in 11.14.

In what appears as an open Blue Diamond Stakes with a number of contenders having strong claims, Pariah looks an improving colt (Saturday being only his second start) who appears to be peaking at the right time.

The Michael Freedman-trained Frolic opened her account at the third attempt in the $250,000 Inglis Classic (RL, 1200m) at Monday’s rescheduled Randwick fixture.

The filly, who had finished second at her first two starts, showed

impressive acceleration to swoop from the rear of the field to beat Sweet Deal (Casino Prince) by a length and a quarter, with the pair pulling a further five and a half lengths clear of Lets Get Nauti Girl (Harbour Watch) in third.

Frolic is one of six named foals out of the Group Three-winning mare Leveller (Redoute’s Choice), herself a half-sister to the winning dam of the Group Three winner I’m Your Venus (Show A Heart), making her a half-sister to one winner.

Her third dam is the dual Group Two winner Startling Lass (Luskin Star), while this is also the same family as the stakes-winning and Group One-placed Shovhog (Danehill), the Listed winner Shovoff (Danehill) and the Group Three winner Spurtonic (Flying Spur).

Analysis: The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Hypnotist staged a promising effort in winning here on debut. He began well and soon crossed to race outside the leader (Euro Gold) travelling at a moderate tempo. He challenged on straightening got the upper hand at the 50m and went on to score narrowly, but seemingly with something in hand. Euro Gold led the field until passing the 100m and held on nicely for second while Godolphin’s colt Animalia was fourth to the home turn, put in a run from the 200m and made ground in the sprint home for a close up third, going quite well on debut.

Analysis: The Joe Pride-trained Tamarack benefitted from his second in a Wyong Maiden (1200m) on 1 February at his first start to score a promising win here.
