Mr Hinchliffe has been leading this trial to test our ICT infrastructure, connectivity capacity, BYOD, teacher organisation and student adaptability to the new mode of NAPLAN testing.

Trials to date have demonstrated our bandwidth can cope and BYODs that meet specifications as indicated in the BYOD policy work well. Please be reminded that iPAD Mini’s won’t work with the online testing and are not recommended as a BYOD at Sorrento.

Chicken Pox As a precaution, we are advising that there has been a case of chicken pox in our school. This is a Health Department notifiable disease. We ask you to be observant of the health of your child and be aware that symptoms may include fever, fatigue, and a generalised rash characterised by small vesicles (blisters) that rupture to form crusts. Transmission is either airborne or by droplet and direct or indirect contact with fluid from visicles (blisters) of an infected person. Incubation period is 13 to 17 days. The infection period is from 2 days before rash appears until vesicles have formed crusts. Exclusion from school is for at least 5 days after vesicles (rash) appear and until vesicles have formed crusts. If you are worries about a child’s health, always seek medical advice or call Healthdirect Australia on 1800 022 222 (24 hours). Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Waste Wise News

There are many good reasons for minimizing the amount of waste that we create: It reduces impacts on the environment, for example:

Fewer natural ecosystems will be affected by mining, harvesting, and landfill of waste if we can manufacture new goods from old goods.

Fewer landfill sites will need to be built if we can extend the life of the landfill, which means that the biodiversity of a future landfill site can remain intact.

Greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced if we were all to compost and/or worm farm our organic waste.

School Health

Why Do I Need Calcium? Bones grow rapidly during adolescence, and teens need enough calcium to build strong bones and fight bone loss later in life. But many don't get the recommended daily amount of calcium. In addition, people who smoke or drink soda, caffeinated beverages, or alcohol may get even less calcium because those substances interfere with the way the body absorbs and uses calcium.

Bone calcium begins to decrease in young adulthood and people gradually lose

bone density as they age — particularly women. Teens, especially girls, whose diets don't provide the nutrients to build bones to their maximum potential are at greater risk of developing the bone disease osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures from weakened bones. Calcium also plays an important role in muscle contraction, transmitting messages through the nerves, and the release of hormones. If people aren't getting enough calcium in their diet, the body takes calcium from the bones to ensure normal cell

function, which can lead to weakened bones. If you got enough calcium and physical activity when you were a kid and continue to do so as a teen, you'll enter your adult years with the strongest bones possible. Source: http://kidshealth.org/en/teens/calcium.html
