February 2016 What is Horizontal Direconal Drilling? Horizontal direconal drilling (HDD) is a steerable underground drilling method to install underground pipes and casings without having to trench. HDD and the Marime Link The Marime Link Project will use HDD technology at both subsea cable landfall sites in Cape Ray and Point Aconi. It will be used to create a protected path through the rock to insert the HVdc subsea cables. Why HDD? HDD was chosen for the Project to ensure minimal impact, prevenng disturbance to shorelines and sensive interdal areas. Keeping safety top of mind Before work begins, risk assessments for moving equipment and drilling operaons will be conducted to ensure each acon is conducted with safety as the top priority. Each contractor on site will have its own safety, quality, and environmental protecon plan to meet Emera Newfoundland & Labrador’s (Emera NL) standards. Daily safety meengs, tool box talks, and safety monitoring will also take place onsite. Environmental and Sound Monitoring Environmental monitors with both Emera NL and its contractors will implement protecon measures outlined in the HDD Environmental Protecon Plan. Emera NL conducted baseline sound surveys and modeling in 2013 and will repeat this work in February 2016 prior to the start of HDD. What is Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a steerable underground drilling method to install underground pipes and casings without having to trench.

HDD and the Maritime Link

The Maritime Link Project will use HDD technology at both subsea cable landfall sites in Cape Ray and Point Aconi. It will be used to create a protected path through the rock to insert the HVdc subsea cables.
