How Are Schools Utilizing ERC Professional Development to Meet Educational Technology Needs?

A cohort of Toledo Public School science educators and curriculum specialists attended a three-session series to gather teaching resources and learning tools for creating active, engaging learning opportunities for middle school students. Teachers participated in activities focusing on the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration and creativity using flip cams and web 2.0 tools. As one Tech21 teacher stated: “My head is spinning with ideas to try! You (ERC) have a great team working together!”

Summit Academy Secondary School utilized the services of the ERC after receiving a 2009 eTech Ohio 21st Century Learning Environments grant.

An introductory session provided an overview of various technologies to assist the school in making informed tech purchasing decisions. Follow

up sessions (plus the technology!) included flip cam, doc cam, iPod Touch and wireless slate. Teachers had hands-on practice with the technology

and gained strategies for differentiating instruction.

Big Tech Pak = Technology + Professional DevelopmentThe ERC provided hundreds of doc cams, flip cams, wireless slates, iPod Touch, iPADs and clickers to NW Ohio schools via the Big Tech Pak series. Teachers explored online apps, basic video production and much more as they developed creative, technology-rich learning activities for their classrooms. “Loved the fact they (ERC team) showed us how to do it, then gave us the opportunity to try it.” - Middle School Teacher.

USE-ITThis year-long series, funded through a partnership with the BGSU NWO Center

for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, engaged twenty-five 3rd – 8th grade teachers from ten districts in 21st century skills and technology applications.

Educators created their own Google Sites, collaborated with Google Docs, created content-specific videos and gathered lesson ideas for using Google

Earth and interactive websites in their science and math classrooms. “The sessions were well organized, engaging, and presented information that I can use

in my classroom right away.” USE-IT teacher. “The information presented gave me a glimpse of exciting things I can do in my classroom.”

Technology is for Administrators too! This series assisted administrators in using technology to enhance their productivity, communication and organization. With sessions on Google Docs, iPod Touch, Skype and Tech & Assessment, the ERC helps administrators improve their own tech skills and explore innovative ideas for enhancing their schools with technology.

The ERC facilitated customized programs for numerous schools and districts. Ottawa Hills Local

Schools explored how Google Earth, 21st Century Skills and Wikis can support K-12 district curriculum

initiatives. The ERC designed a series for thirty Toledo Public School Career Tech teachers that

focused on tech integration strategies and resources that aligned with their career tech curriculum.
