At Wesway, we listen. We tailor

our services to meet the distinctive

needs of each family we serve.

Were proud of our reputation foreibility, diversity and innovation.

    Based on eligibility, funding and

    other resources, we work in

    partnership with families to create

    personalized service plans built on

    individual strengths, needs and

    preferences. After service plans

    are approved, family caregivers

    are encouraged to arrange their

    periods of respite directly with

their workers or volunteers. No one

    can predict when an emergency

might occur a death, illness, or

    other etraordinary situation. We

    strive to support families through

some of lifes most difcult respite

care challenges. There are no fees

    for Wesways respite care services.

Host FamiliesAfter careful screening andmatching, volunteer HostFamilies provide periodsof respite by welcominga child or adult with adisability into their home. The hosts include theindividual in their familyactivities for a few hours,

or an occasional overnightor a weekend.

service can occur regularlyor variably. During a periodof respite, our workersmay assist participants inthe enjoyment of variousactivities with a focus ontheir needs, interests andpersonal safety. If a familydesires, periods of respitemay take place outside ofthe home.

As someone whoused Weswaysservices, I trulyunderstand thevalue of respitecare. My partnerRoger was diag-nosed with FrontTemporal Lobe

Dementia (Pick'sDisease). His personality changed,he became mute and ultimatelylost the use of his arms andlegs. Together with family andfriends, I cared for him around theclock. The strain on everyone wasintense. When I was hospitalizedfor surgery in 2003, Weswaystepped in to help. Thus began a

wonderful relationship withWesway that continued to Rogersdeath in 2006. I was able to planactivities that helped retain closeties with family and friends.Wesway was a "gift" that likelysaved my sanity. I am proud togive back to the organization byserving on the Board of Directors.

    Wesway strives to prevent

burnout by helping family care-givers take the breaks they needto renew their energy and contin-ue caring for their loved ones athome. This reduces visits to emer-

gency departments, decreasesunnecessary admissions to hospi-tals and long-term care homes, and reduces alternate level of care(ALC) pressures and length ofhospital stays for seniors.

Funded by the Provinces Aging atHome Strategy, we are thrilled

with the success of our respite ser-vices for seniors in communitiesboth East and West of ThunderBay. These pilot projects featureflexibility, a family-centredapproach and practical, grassrootscommunity connections. Throughevaluation of our work, it becameclear that most individuals weserve meet the eligibility require-

ments for long-term care, andtheir family caregivers are often inpoor health. Respite may be thepivotal element that enables themto continue living with dignity athome. We are delighted to confirmthat our services in the region willbe ongoing.

Wesway applauds the North WestLocal Health Integration Network

(LHIN) for recognizing the vitalrole family caregivers play. Ourhealth system would collapsewithout the dedication and sacri-fice of these family caregivers.

Wesway fully supports the LHINsstrategic directions, which alignclosely with our own goals tomaximize the effective use ofscarce resources.

Despite positive news about ser-vice expansion for seniors, ourfunding remains insufficient to

meet the rising demand. TheWesway Board is gravely con-cerned by the severe shortage offunds for adults between the agesof 18 and 64 who have a devel-opmental and/or physical disabili-ty. Our services dont come closeto meeting the true need.Tragically, when children reach theage of 18, we are forced to stop

their respite. Their names areadded to a long waiting list forservice. This is crushing news formany families. As they continuecaring for their adult children athome, these aging parents needrespite more than ever. Weswaycontinues to push the Ministry ofCommunity and Social Services foracceptable funding levels foradults with a developmental dis-

ability. We also urge the Ministryof Health and Long-Term Care toconsider a provincial strategy toaddress the needs of adults with aphysical disability.

The public is bombarded dailywith warnings about aging babyboomers that will soon overwhelmour health care system. Creativesolutions are essential.Unquestionably, preventive com-munity support services such asrespite care will play a crucial rolein managing the demographic

    realities of the future.

In celebration of CommunitySupport Month in Ontario, Imprivileged to offer greetings andbest wishes to our friends inThunder Bay and communitiesthroughout Northwestern Ontario.

I hope you enjoy reading this spe-

cial edition. We are extremelygrateful to Wesways families, vol-unteers and staff who have will-ingly shared their personal stories. We salute their strength and com-mitment, and we honour thetremendous part they play in sus-taining the community care sys-tem for future generations.

Recovery. Be it economic, financialor physical, there is much in themedia on the issue of recovery in

Europe, North America and withinour province of Ontario. Yet those ofus here in the North understandthat recovery is not always possible.Resources dwindle demandslackens trends change All ofwhich can lead to demise ratherthan recovery. How do we resolvethese deep rooted problems? Do wecontinue following the same beatenpath? Or is it time for fresh and cre-ative reasoning?

In the human services field, we arechallenged to address the old prob-lems of too little funds to serve toomany needs and lengthy waitinglists. We now have the additionalreality of the early baby boomersturning age sixty-five. This bur-geoning wave of demographicchange is certain to overwhelm thecontinued needs of adults, youthand children. Service providers are

becoming attuned to the inherentwisdom of effective change soon!Discussions now focus on doingthings differently, realigning

resources and overcoming barriers. The air is electric with determinationand obvious enthusiasm an

enthusiasm not shared at all levels.Bureaucratic frameworks throughtheir ministries, programs, projects, agencies, divisive funding streamsand complex reporting systems aremore prolific in their silo structuresthan the shoreline of Thunder Baysharbour. Truly, there is an opportu-nity to lead a process of profoundchange. Placing families at the cen-tre of a service delivery model

would be a fresh start. Provide ser-vice in an integrated fashion acrossthe lifespan of people and communi-ties with a genuine spirit of collabo-ration. This would go a long waytoward streamlining governmentstructures.

The problems our communities facein supporting families didnt occur indiscrete pockets of unrelated socialpressures. Surely the solutions will

not come from scattered policies anddirectives, but rather through anintegrated approach.

During the Labour Day weekend of2009, I drowned in our swimmingpool. I had a cardiac arrest while Iwas in the pool with Erika, one ofthe girls we host through Wesway. Not good. My son fished me outand did CPR until the paramedicsand firefighters arrived. I was resus-citated and rushed to hospital. Iwasn't mentally around forSeptember and my wife was prettysure that we would be moving fromour status as givers of help toreceivers of help. Knowing thatthere were services like Wesway

that would help her care for a verydisabled me, provided some hope. But, by the end of October, thingshad improved. My ImplantableCardiac Defibrillator (ICD) had beeninstalled, my brain was functioningagain and I was out of the hospital. We knew life would be different inmany ways. I certainly wasn't thestrong capable guy I had beenbefore. We figured that the hostfamily volunteering we had been

doing for about nine years would be

gone, just one of many unwantedchanges in our lives.

The next few months were very dif-ficult for us. After two more cardiacarrests we moved to a smaller onestorey house. I had lots of medicalappointments and our world hadshrunk so much. The families of ourWesway girls were part of ourextensive support system throughthese difficult months, making surewe knew they were cheering for us.They told us to just take the timewe needed. Although we weren't

ready to have the girls for a week-end, we started to take them for acouple of hours here and there. They provided us with some neededdiversion. Larissa's love of shoppingand going to the libraries got mywife out of the confines of thehouse and away from the focus onme. I found Larissa's high energyencouraged me. Erikas love ofswimming, walking and goingplaces got me out too. So it turned

out to be a win-win. As always,

there was never any pressure onus. Their families always tell us thatthey appreciate any time we areable to spend with the girls. We

    appreciate being appreciated.

Over the last year I haven't had anymore cardiac arrests. We haveadjusted to our new home, andhave been able to take up travelingagain. We have been fitting visits

with the girls around our increas-ingly busy schedule and have juststarted doing weekend hostingagain. The families are always real-

ly good about keeping our timesflexible. It turns out that we were areceiver of Wesway services - justnot in the way we expected. Thanks guys. You brighten ourlives!

It will be a bittersweet day whenJohn Schmidt locks the doors toWesways Respite Home at Andras

Court for the final time. After nearlyten years, the place evokes infinitememories of special times with par-ticipants, families, staff, studentsand volunteers. Yet, with the grow-ing demand for Wesways RespiteHome Services and the changingneeds of the people we serve, itstime to move forward into a new eraof exciting possibilities.

In a few weeks, Wesway will cut the

ribbon on two new Respite Homeson Jean Street, marking anothermilestone in Wesways proud historyof family-focused services. The twodistinct Respite Homes, each with itsown entrance and parking, are con-tained within one brand new two-storey duplex. The lower level is tobe used by adults, while the upperfloor will serve children. Both unitsare bright, spacious and fullyequipped for participants with physi-

cal challenges. The childrens homewill have a great yard for outdooractivities.

Not far away, Wesways RespiteHome located at Luther Court hasbeen operating since 2004. Its

warm, roomy and inviting interioroffers a welcome setting for thesenior population served byWesway. We recently added a greenspace, where folks enjoy the readilyaccessible outdoor garden area.

One of our goals was to provideinclusive environments that aretruly part of their respective neigh-bourhoods. We strive to createspaces that feel as close to home for

participants as possible includinghome cooking! says John.

The Respite Home model of servicedates back to Wesways early rootsin the 1970s when Wesway renteda place on the citys south side.

Jean Lesyk explains, Our RespiteHome services have really grownand evolved over the years. Andweve enjoyed wonderful partnershipopportunities with many other com-

munity groups and organizationsthat proved to be mutually beneficial.

Jean adds, Weve also beenextremely fortunate with our caring, dedicated and creative staff memberswho are so committed to serving the

unique needs of each participant. Weplay Wii, make crafts, go on picnics,

visit parks, attend baseball games you name it! Staff members involvethe participants in all kinds of com-

munity recreational activities. Wehave lots of fun together and wevedeveloped really strong bonds withcountless people of all ages.

When families need a break from theongoing demands of providing carefor a family member, the RespiteHomes offer a valuable option with-in Wesways menu of flexible ser-vices. The Weekend Service wel-comes participants to stay from

Friday through Sunday. This lengthof respite is just right for some fami-ly caregivers to feel re-energized.They might take a short vacation, dohousehold chores, or perhaps justcatch up on much needed sleep.

John observes, Caregivers can feelconfident that their family memberswill be well supported and cared forat our Respite Homes. Plus, the par-ticipants usually have a great time.

After all its a break for them too!

Respite Home Supervisors John Schmidt andJean Lesyk know that participants will lovethe new Respite Homes

    Home Away from Home

    Proud to offer programs and

    services that meet the physical,

    developmental, communication

    and social needs of children

    of all ages and abilities.

Richard Lupien, CaregiverThe support has been awesome. It is great to have. I like the fact that I can find peoplemy dad is already comfortable and familiar with to spend time with him and provide mewith a short break. I was able to use it when my dad was in hospital in Thunder Bayand I was unable to be with him. I used it recently when I had to attend to my own med-

ical needs in Kenora and someone stayed with dad over night and for a day. I reallyappreciate it and plan on using it a bit more.

Fred Klug, CaregiverMy wife has Alzheimer Disease, and we used the funding from Wesway to hire a worker to spend time with her.Not only is it a good thing for me, it is a good thing for Judy my wife because she gets to do things I dont have

time for. I love the flexibility of the program because we are the ones who decide the hours and days we wantthe service.

Nancy Reynolds, CaregiverWhen my husband had his stroke, it was such a breaking point for my family. Respite might seem small, butits really huge for us. Wesway is very positive and the process is so easy. What a treat!

If you love camping, fishing andoutdoor adventure, Kenora is a fab-ulous place to live! And if your

nest has emptied, perhaps a weesense of freedom is stirring inside freedom to spend a little more timeenjoying your favourite leisure pur-suits. Thats how it was forRosemary and Addie Bain.

When their son and two daughterswere growing up, the Bains wereardent campers, frequently spendingtheir summer weekends at the lake.Smiling at the great memories,

Rosemary recalls, We always hadplaces to go and fun things to do!

When Addie retired, they madeplans for a carefree future. Whenour son moved to Victoria, we said,Thats OK, we can travel to B.C. forvisits and I thought, now itstime for me Im going to get a joband earn a little money for myself, shares Rosemary. But that didnthappen.

Rosemary shares, My Dad cameand asked if he and Mom couldmove in with us. Mom had demen-

tia and heart problems, and it was

hard for them to manage on theirown. Of course we didnt hesitate and we welcomed their little dogtoo. Moms health declined quick-

ly and she passed away within afew years. By then Dad was blindand had his own health issues, so

he continued to live with us. Nowhes 89 and really cant be left onhis own.

Dad is a wonderful manhealways had a very dynamiclifestyle, and was an extremely avidreader. Its hard for him to lose hisindependence. And really, its notdifficult to have Dad live with us but, it is difficult to have the feelingthat we cant go anywhere without

Dad. His whole world revolvesaround me, and thats a lot of pres-sure! Sometimes were invited outand we just cant go.

Now Rosemary and Addie areencountering their own healthissues. Rosemary has arthritis andsuffers with pain in her knees. Shesays, There are things I just cantdo. Last winter, Addie needed totravel to Dryden for hip replacement

surgery. Rosemary desperatelywanted to be with her husband dur-

ing this time, but she couldnt leaveher Dad. Then she learned aboutWesways respite services from a

friend on Facebook. With help fromWesway, Rosemary arranged for aworker to stay with her Dad for afew days, and she accompaniedAddie for his surgery.

Now Rosemary uses Wesways ser-vices on a regular basis. Her Dadcheerfully anticipates his outingswith the worker, so everybodywins! The Bains love spending timewith their grandchildren, and they

are looking forward to a campingtrip with the whole family. However, nothing is spontaneousand Rosemary admits its still com-plicated to plan and organize every-thing to ensure her Dad is notalone.

We want Dad to live at home withus for as long as possible, saysRosemary. Thanks to Wesway, Ifeel we have a life again!

A Snapshot of Respite around the Region

From April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 Wesway assisted 304families in Thunder Bay, providing 134,965hours of respite carethrough its In-Home, Respite Home, Host Family and CommunityFriend services.

City of Thunder Bay and Immediate Surrounding Area:

Since 1973 Wesway has offered personalized Respite supportservices to family caregivers who have a loved one living withthem that have a physical or developmental disability, AlzheimerDisease, related dementia or a chronic health condition. While thespecific eligibility requirements may differ, Wesway provides itsservices to caregivers with participants of all ages. Wesway offersa variety of respite options for families including In Home andRespite Home, Host Family and Community Friend services, as wellas Family Directed Respite Funding under limited circumstances.

Communities East of Thunder Bay:In 2008, Wesway introduced a creative approach for servingchildren with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the district. Though asmall and focused initiative, it helped pave the way for the servicewe offer to children and adults with a developmental disability.

As part of Ontario's Aging At Home Strategy, Wesway launchedrespite care services for family caregivers of frail seniors in theDistrict of Thunder Bay. Recognizing the lack of this type ofsupport in the outlying communities, Wesway sought to undertakean innovative pilot project to test the Family Directed RespiteFunding concept with seniors needing support. The overallobjective is to strengthen the capacity of family caregivers to carefor seniors at home.

Communities West of Thunder Bay:In 2010, expanding on the success of its project in the east underthe Aging at Home Strategy, Wesway began offering its FamilyDirected Respite Funding model in the districts of Kenora and RainyRiver, along the 11/17 corridor west of Thunder Bay. Thisservice has helped many families caring for loved ones withchronic health conditions, frail elderly or Alzheimer Disease and

    related dementia.

Since 2008, Wesway has served 296 families from the Manitobaborder, east to Manitouwadge, with Family Directed RespiteFunding.

From Natali Surkic...Im a Lakehead University student

in the Applied BiomolecularScience program, which incorpo-rates a variety of different scienceand math based courses. I chosethis degree to achieve a wellrounded understanding of sciencein all of its complexity and rich-ness. I felt it would provide thestrongest foundation from which tobecome a physician.

    Before I became involved with

Wesway, my eyes were closed tothe challenges faced by peoplewith special health conditions.Volunteering as a CommunityFriend has given me a new per-spective on helping people. Notonly is this an eye opening volun-teer experience, its really fun! Imgoing to various places aroundThunder Bay I normally wouldntsee, and gaining a lot of experiencethat will help me when I graduate.

Getting involved with Wesway isone of the best things Ive ever done.Im matched with Alex, and weve

built a great relationship. I see heras often as I can because we havesuch a good time hanging out

together. We go to the park orRons Virtual World, get some icecream from Merla Mae, walkaround the Cascades or sometimesjust watch a movie or play MouseTrap. When I first started volun-teering with Alex, I thought Id bethe one getting her out and show-ing her some fun things to do inThunder Bay. I soon learned I was-n't the only helpful one! Alex is sooptimistic and enjoys every minute

of every activity. She even has funsinging out loud to music duringour car rides. She teaches me anew way of looking at the world. She shows me how to enjoy eventhe littlest things in life and see thefun in every situation. Alex hasgiven me more than I could havegiven her. We've gone from com-munity friends to true friends. Ican't imagine not having her aspart of my life!

From the Johnstone Family...(Ian, April, Alex and Kylee)We would like to take this opportu-nity to thank all the dedicatedWesway staff and volunteers wehave had the pleasure to meet andwork with over the years. Youhave given our daughter Alex themost precious gifts of all, yourtime, patience, knowledge, accep-tance and love. The effects of thesegifts are apparent in Alex each andevery day; she has become moreself confident and independent and

has a true sense of belonging. Shelooks forward to your visits eachand every week. No aspect of thetime any of you have spent withher has gone unnoticed or unap-preciated. For weeks, months evenyears after a visit has taken place,Alex will recall a special momentor time that she has spent withyou. You are truly an extraordinarygroup of people. We would like toexpress our extreme gratitude and

Brie was only 13 years old whenKatrena began working with her in2007. They instantly hit it off. Avibrant young woman with Down

Syndrome, Brie is full of life. Sheenjoys shopping, cooking, dancingand going to movies and sheabsolutely loves music! RespiteWorker Katrena is enthusiasticabout the exact same interests. Itsthe perfect match!

Brie comes from a large busy fami-ly, including four younger siblings a brother and three sisters. As a

result, the time spent with Katrenais very special for Brie. They do allkinds of girl things like paint theirnails, fix their hair, and pamperthemselves to the full extent. Mostlythey just have quality time together.Sometimes, Bries sisters are includ-ed in these adventures for an allgirls night out, and Bries Momcan enjoy a true break.

In May 2010, a very close friend ofBries passed away. Katrena was ahuge support to Brie during this sadand difficult time. Together they cre-ated a memory book as a specialtribute to her friend. It contains var-ious mementos, including picturesof the two girls having fun together, places they used to go, even aphoto of her friends favourite musi-cian. They also made a CD of her

friends favourite songs. Brie adoresthe memory book as a cherishedkeepsake. It helps keep her friendsmemory alive and gives her comfortin times of sadness. Katrena andBrie often talk about her friend.Katrena has consistently goneabove and beyond to support Briethrough the tough times.

    This year Brie turns eighteen.

Unfortunately, this birthday mile-stone can be a real challenge formany families served by Wesway. At age eighteen, children officiallytransition to adulthood and they areno longer eligible for childrensrespite services. Sadly, there is a

severe shortage of governmentfunding for adults with a disability.Wesways respite services for adultssimply cannot keep pace with theever-increasing demand. The resultis a very lengthy waiting list forthese young people.

For Brie and her family this couldhave been a devastating blow. However, Katrena is determined not

to give up the strong bond of friend-ship that she has developed withBrie and her family over the lastseveral years. Katrena has decidedto become a Community Friend andcontinue her relationship with Brieon a volunteer basis. What a won-derful demonstration of commitmentto families!

Everything changed at 19 monthsof age, when Laura began sufferingbrief but substantial seizures. At theoutset, doctors couldnt find thecause but Connie knew in her heartthat it was something serious. Dueto the seizures, which often struckher several times a day, Laurabegan to regress to where she

stopped walking, and was eventuallyunable to support her own weight. She shows no emotion or expres-sion of pain, making it difficult toknow if something is wrong. Whiledoctors suspect that whatever hascaused the seizures have alsocaused her developmental disability, medical professionals have beenunable to diagnose what Laura isgoing through. One doctor saidthat the more they study the brain,

the more they realize how little theyknow, Connie says.Making Lauras condition more dif-ficult is a lung condition which hascaused many hospital stays. Lauragets sick so easily and is physicallyfragile. We are in and out of thereall the time, Connie remarks.

In 2001, tragedy struck Conniesfamily when her husband John waskilled in an accident shortly after

Lauras health condition emerged.Through Connie's faith, her familyand her new husband Derrickwhom she married in 2003, shewas able to cope with the challengeof raising a family that includes adaughter with special needs. In2007 when one of her sons passedaway suddenly, it was again thosesame pillars that provided the sup-port Connie needed to get throughthe most difficult times.

My faith and my family helped usout so much. Derrick and I areteaching our children these samevalues growing up. Our kids help uswith many of Lauras needs. Theyare very involved.

The challenge now facing Connie isthat Laura has turned twelve yearsold, and it is getting more difficult

to get her dressed and ready to goout. Laura had surgery for aspira-tion issues last July, and as her lungcondition has improved, she has puton more weight as a side effect ofthat. The challenge is that it nowtakes more effort to lift and carryher, Lauras room was redesignedwith a lift and tracking system aswell as a large tub, making life a lit-tle easier for the family. It wasvery costly but worth it. Laura still

has high needs and is medicallyfragile, prone to illness and bonefractures. We almost lost her lastyear, she adds.

Like many caregivers, Connie ini-tially didnt think she would needrespite. If I could go back and do itagain, I would have called Weswayearlier. Respite has been really goodfor all of us. It has allowed us totake a couple of short trips and do

some things as a family we other-

    wise couldntdo, Connie adds.She appreciates

how Weswaymatched her withRespite Workerswho blend intoher home. Ourworker is familyoriented like usand has similarvalues. Shes likea part of the fam-ily, and fits inwell.

Laura also visitsthe RespiteHome, whichallows her familyto take shortvacations or torest up at home.Connie is lookingforward to taking her to Weswaysnew Respite Home.

As for the future, Connie is hopefulLaura can be matched with aWesway Host Family to help herwith periods of respite.

Connie says her family and faith give her the strengthshe needs

Laura a rrived at the familys homefor the initial meeting and immedi-ately put them at ease. She shared

easily of herself and asked respect-ful questions, engaging both thefamily caregiver and the partici-pant in conversation. She gra-ciously accepted their invitation tostay for tea afterwards and it waseasy to see that Laura Heeremawas going to be a Respite Workerwho would make a difference. Ifyou already know Laura, thatwouldnt surprise you. This is awoman who has been making a

    difference in our community foryears.

After completing high school Laurawent on to take the EarlyChildhood Education Course at

Confederation College. She enjoyedher work supporting families andencouraged the people she workedwith to be the best they could beso they could experience the full-ness of life.

When Laura and her husbandMark became first time parents toNikki, Laura found herself follow-ing Nikki everywhere with hercamera. She received many com-

pliments on her photography. Bythe time their son Nathan wasborn, Laura had decided, Now

this is a way to give back to oth-ers. Her photos allowed her to giftothers with shared memories andopportunities to appreciate nature. This talented woman now getsrequests to photograph families, weddings and babies!

As her children got older, Laurabegan volunteering at their schoolpitching in with whatever help was

needed. Today Laura helps outwith the Booster Club and the hotlunch program. Laura is active inher church community where shesings in the Joyful Chorus choir andshe teaches Sunday School. Shecoordinates volunteers to care for achild with special needs at thechurch while their parents attendthe worship service. Laura has alsohad a role in the Vacation BibleSchool for the past 21 years.

Last summer Laura decided toapply for a Respite Worker positionat Wesway. She felt she was treatedas somebody right from thebeginning of the process. She feltgenuinely accepted for the personshe was and the experiences sheheld. They really want to get toknow you, they ask how you feel, says Laura. The supervisors havebeen very supportive and when

you are treated well as an employ-ee, you want to give back. Youremade to feel worthy as an employ-ee. Ive never felt as happy as I amhere.

Laura expressed her appreciationfor the training period. Ive neverfelt so valued, she said. I couldsee Wesway really cared about meas an employee. I thought thetraining was good and much need-ed. It allowed us to hash out ourthoughts and understand all theirpolicies. I felt confident goingthrough the training and it was mylife skills that gave me that confi-dence.

Today Laura is matched with fourfamilies. She has four regular shiftseach week, as well as some occa-sional work. The flexibility isamazing, says Laura. I still wantto be home at the end of the day

for my kids and the positions Iveaccepted allow for this to happen. It is so cool that Wesway matchesme with people that I fit so wellwith. I feel honoured that thesefamilies would have me as theirRespite Worker.

Erik Sereda, Respite WorkerIn my two years as a Respite Worker with Wesway, I have had the pleasure of meeting some amazing individu-als and families. Just seeing the happiness and strength of these individuals and families is enough to turn theworst day into a g reat day.

Emily Currie, Respite WorkerIts rare and special to go to work and be greeted everyday with smiles, laughter, and even hugs. Its one of themany things that I love about working for Wesway. The children that I work with are always excited to see me,and spending time with the participants rarely feels like work. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad

    day while working for Wesway.

Life in general is filled with chal-lenges, and when we have childrenthe demands on parents becomegreater. This is compounded when it

is a single parent, and that singleparent has a child with autism. Itslike trying to swim up stream.

When Crystal Anderson was preg-nant at nineteen years old, she andher high school sweetheart werethrilled with the reality of becomingparents and raising a family. Theywere not prepared however, for thespecial bundle they received. Theirson Caden is a beautiful boy, who

at four years old is challenged withautism a challenge that Cadensfather could not accept. This leftCrystal and Caden to swim ontheir own.

To say the least, when it was ini-tially suggested to her that her sonhad autism, Crystals reaction wasdenial. As she says with a veryheavy heart, No one wants to betold that theres something wrong

with their child. Once Caden was

diagnosed, I felt uplifted becausepeople understood and assistancebegan. Plus, I learned about a diag-nosis that I knew nothing about.

Autism is just a word. It doesnthave to hold Caden back as a resultof a label. As a young girl in anAboriginal community, I experi-enced discrimination because Ididnt look like them, so I want toprotect my son.

Crystal constantly struggled withthe feeling that she was inconve-niencing her family and friends tocare for Caden while she tried to

run errands. The lack of time toherself, plus worrying about howshe would manage on her own, affected Crystals health. She suf-fered from depression, felt veryinsecure and developed an intestinalillness that required her to changeher diet. The upstream swim wasbecoming unmanageable at thispoint.

    When Crystal started with Wesway

    Family Directed Respite Funding,

she said, It has given me my lifeback. She is now able to breatheand find time for herself, includingattending school part time. Weswayfunding assists with some of thecare costs.

When asked about Crystals plansfor the future, she responded, Imnot really secure right now. So, Iwould like to own a home and a

vehicle. Im not concerned aboutmany material things because theyarent important to Caden, but Iwould like to have more children.Caden is kind and gentle with otherchildren and babies, and I knowthat he would be a very good bigbrother.

I used to tear-up every time I hadto talk about Caden. Now that Iunderstand autism a bit better and I

know how to help him, I see hiscontentment, which makes me feelcontent. Caden is a treasure and Ilook forward to my life with him.Somehow, the swim upstreamdoesnt seem so daunting rightnow.

    Dear Friend of Wesway,

Piper is our charming and adorable ten year old son. He enjoys camping, swimming, fishing and all kinds of music and movies. Athome, he idolizes his big sister and little brother, giving them big hugs and keeping them close by. At school, he delights in makinghis friends laugh and has been known to bring out the best in his peers.

Piper was born with Down Syndrome and a heart defect. For his safety, its imperative that we keep a very close eye on him.Darting into the street or wandering away is a scary possibility. At times, he fixates on wanting to do an activity or go to a certainplace and its hard to redirect his attention. Shopping trips with Piper are very limited and can be difficult because its hard to sustainhis attention for long periods of time.

Were fortunate to have lots of family support, but our parents arent getting younger and they need a break too. We were referredto Wesway and went on a waiting list for a while. Incredibly, the first time we used Wesways respite service was the day our third

    child was born!

Our Wesway Respite Worker has taken Piper once a week for five years. Shes absolutely wonderful! Although Piper has limitedverbal skills, we know he loves Tiffany. Together they play with her dog, go to parks or the library, watch movies, play on the com-puter or go out to eat. Its a social time for him. He gets fresh air and exercise while learning to interact with people without uswatching and directing every move.

For us, respite is a rare grown-up evening together at a restaurant! We also appreciate some uninterrupted time with our othertwo children. When Piper spends a weekend at Wesways Respite Home, both of us can attend our daughters hockey tournamentsand really focus on her games.

There are times when weve been completely exhausted. Piper only recently began to sleep through the night! Were young andhealthy, but we know there are many families struggling to cope in their role as caregivers.

Looking ahead, we realize our support network will change over time. Our other children will grow more independent and involvedwith their own lives. Where will that leave Piper? We hope Wesway will continue to be there for us.

In the future, we see ourselves volunteering for Wesway. For now, its more realistic for us to give back by making regular financialdonations. We hope you will do the same. Please give what you can, and help us support Wesways vital services for families!

    Sincerely,

    Leslie and Chris Hynnes
