MANISTEE -- West ShoreCommunity College and ManisteeCivic Players are teaming up again toproduce another blockbuster musi-cal--Annie Get Your Gun. The musi-cal is being presented at the historicRamsdell Theatre in Manistee June 25and 26; July 1 and 2, at 7:30 p.m. andon Sunday, July 3, at 2 p.m.

Director Rick Plummer says thatAnnie Get Your Gun, like one of

WSCCs and MCPs more recentpopular co-productions, The Soundof Music, is also based on real-lifefigures. The real-life Von Trapp family

are dramatized in the popular Rodgersand Hammerstein musical, and theAnnie from the title of this musi-cal refers to Annie Oakley, the iconic

American sharpshooter, who, alongwith her husband, fellow marksmanFrank Butler, were two of the featuredacts in Buffalo Bill Codys Wild WestShow.

Ive always been a history buff,Plummer says, and after acting inand directing several big outdoor his-torical dramas around the country, I

went to do my graduate study with thetheater scholar who had published theonly book on this remarkable genre ofdrama.

Annie Get Your Gun is IrvingBerlins valentine to show businessand to the love between two endear-ing characters from our past, Plummercontinues. The big show number fromthe score is Theres No Business LikeShow Business, which has become apopular anthem for theater and theaterartists worldwide. The musical is seton the stage of Buffalo Bill Codys Wild

West Show and Congress of RoughRiders from Around the World.

Cody is portrayed in this produc-tion by WSCC president, Chuck Dillon.

Annie Oakley, Americas sweetheartstraight shooter is played by DaniStansell. Stansells onstage partner isJohn Reed, who plays Frank Butler,

Annie Oakleys devoted husband andfellow showman and exhibition shoot-er.

John Bell plays Chief Sitting Bull,the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man

who led his people as a war chief dur-ing years of resistance to United Statesgovernment policies and its genocideof Native peoples. Sitting Bull joined

Codys Wild West Show and touredbriefly with it around the world in1885.

Native people are shown to beheroic, highly intelligent, and sensitivefirst Americans--in fact, in Sitting Bullscase, he is depicted as much more intel-ligent and sensitive than almost anyoneelse in the cast of characters in theplay, Plummer concludes.

Annie Oakley is played by Manisteeresident and popular area actress DaniStansell. Oakleys amazing talent andtimely rise to fame led to a starring rolein Buffalo Bill Codys Wild West Show,

which propelled her to become the firstAmerican female superstar. Using a.22caliber rifle at 90 feet, Oakley reputedlycould split a playing card edge-on andput five or six more holes in it before ittouched the ground.

Everyone loved Annie for heramazing shooting skills, but also forher humility, kindness and generosity.I hope to portray those characteristicsand make audiences love her, too,Stansell said.

John states, Buildinga character for a stage per-formance can be a difficultand sometimes challengingprocess for me. I want thecharacter to be authentic.

There have been times inthe past I have succeededdoing this and times that Ihave not been as success-ful as I would have liked.Having strong charactersto portray can help makethe process easier. Havingto perform historical fig-ures can bring the actoran advantage in creating acharacter. I find I want tolearn as much about theperson and the time periodduring which they lived soI can bring my character tolife.

ervices throughout our com-unity all year long.

The challenge was thatost volunteers and business

wners were too busy gettingeady for the busy Memorialay weekend to help distrib-te the Forest Festival bro-

hures. So how could we gethese brochures out?If I had a little red

agon, Id take themyself, I said to Janette at

he chamber office. We havelittle yellow wagon, she

nformed me and so I wasff. I visited every store andestaurant on River Streethat was open and, take itrom me, the countys larg-st shopping district is readyor summer and most storeslready had shoppers inside.

Full of purpose and buoyedby the chance to greet somany business owners on a

beautiful day, I moved quick-ly (OK, I dallied a little bitat Suvi, but they have some

great summer fashions sowho could blame me?) andby 1 p.m. I was on my waynorth to Onekama.

In Onekama, I stoppedat MacBeth, EZ Mart andPortage Point Inn and sev-eral businesses in betweenand delivered brochures andposters for the carnival. Our

beautiful Onekama is at itsbest in summer and I hadthe strangest longing to be a

visitor and not a resident, sothat I could be just arrivingfor the summer.

After a stop at Portage

Point Inn (where summeris so perfect it seems like amovie), I headed to SaddleUp in Bear Lake and workedmy way south from there andas always the view of BearLake coming around thecurve of U.S. 31 by JJ Wittys

just takes my breath away.In six hours of delivering

Forest Festival brochures, Ibarely scratched the surfaceof stores and restaurants inManistee County and this

week well be delivering to

Kaleva, Arcadia and alongU.S. 31.

Anyone who thinksthere arent many shoppingoptions in Manistee County

just isnt paying attention.

ONEKAMA The fifth grade class ofJennifer Bromley at Onekama Schools wrote agrant to the Spirit of the Woods Garden Clubseeking funds to beautify the schools new flower

beds, and they recently received word that thegarden club had awarded them a $200 grant.

The students were extremely pleased whenPhyllis Russell presented them a check on behalfof the garden club. Russell was also given a tour

of the school greenhouse project that is growinggreens to be used in salads for the school lunch

program.Russell gave the students an inspirational

speech, and praised their efforts with the gar-dening projects at the school. The fifth gradeclass are the ones that have been in charge ofmaintaining the greenhouse project.

The district is also very active in farm-to-school programs to bring a healthy diet into thelunch program. It is all part of the greenhouse

project, and the effort to bring healthier foods tothe students.

Contributions sought for jazz concert seriesMANISTEE The

Manistee ShoreLineShowCase committee iscontinuing the fundingdrive that makes the June22 through Aug. 24 sum-mer jazz concerts possible.It reminds area residentsthat it is their contribu-tions, large and small, thatmake the concerts possible.

Committee membersinclude co-chairs Tom H.Amor and Kasey Briskeand also Paul Anderson,Michele Bueker, Bill Dean,

Lyn Houtman, SarahKuriger, Susette Redman,Steve Rogers, and MaryRussell. The ShoreLineShowCase committee existsto raise the funds necessaryfor the concerts and alsoto make concert arrange-ments. It is a totally volun-teer effort, and additional

volunteers are always wel-come.

This year the concertswill be outstanding, saidcommittee member BillDean. They include some

past performers and somenew ones.

The concerts are onTuesday evenings from7 until 9 p.m. at RotaryGazebo at First Street

beach. The first one, onJune 22, will feature a newgroup, Jive at Five.

Levels of supportinclude Diamond ($1,000plus), Platinum ($500plus), Gold ($250-499),Silver ($100-249), Bronze($50-99) and Friend(amounts up to $49).

Donors are acknowledgedin each weeks printed pro-gram and this year thereare additional promotional

STRONACH TheManistee County PlanningCommission approvedseveral zoning ordinanceamendments and heard avery informative report ona variety of meetings andtraining sessions attended by

various planning commissionmembers.

One set of the amend-ments came from theStronach PlanningCommission to clarify thedefinition of livestock and toadd definitions of domesticanimal, fowl, fur bearing ani-mal and exotic. The proposedamendments are all wordingchanges.

Manistee County PlannerSue Wagner found that theproposed amendments donot create additional land

uses within the township,and she doesnt find thatthey will create conflictswith neighboring jurisdic-tions. The commission votedto inform the StronachTownship Board it maytake action on the proposedamendments at its discretion,but may want to considerinformation contained in thestaff report.

Several zoning amend-ments presented by the FilerTownship were reviewed byplanning commission mem-bers William Pettis and Gayle

Crampton. The proposedamendments were wordingchances only and Wagnerreported that she found noconflict with the ManisteeCounty Master Plan. She alsoreported that no new landuses are being created by thezoning amendment and nozoning districts were beingmodified to cause conflictswith neighboring jurisdic-tions.

Wagner said that based

on her review, the CharterTownship of Filer can takeaction on the proposedamendment at its discretion.They voted 6-0 to approvethat action.

A request came in fromRobert Knowles regardingproperty No. 51-08-032-175-05 for an address for a newhome he is building on a

private road of High BridgeRoad. There are already twoaddresses issued on thisprivate road, so Knowles wastold that the private road

would have to be namedand his address would beassigned to the new privateroad.

The name he suggestedwas Wilderness Trail and itresulted in three changes ofaddress. They include:

Wagner delivered hermonthly report to the board,and in it were several itemsof interest. She told the boardthat four soil erosion permits

were issued, and nine wereclosed out during the month.She also said that four newaddresses were issued by thedepartment.

The planner also reportedthat the quarterly Brownfieldreport was completed andthat she worked on addition-

al zoning maps for ManisteeTownship and started writ-ing language for the capitalimprovements plan.

Wagner also gave anupdate on the remonumenta-tion program in the absenceof county surveyor PatrickBentley.

He sent me a mes-sage saying that he and JimNordlund have started onthis years contracts and thaton June 21 they will have a

peer meeting to review thecorners that were done by theForest Service, said Wagner.Pat also told me he is work-ing on getting the 2008 GPS

work.Reports were given

by meetings and trainingsessions. Those that weretouched on included aCooperative Planning meet-

ing in Dickson and NormanTownships, Shared PublicServices Initiative, FarmMarket GAAMP training andNew Economy 101 and 201meetings.

Planning Commissionmember Roger Smithedelivered a permit applica-tion on the Inland Lakes andStreams Act on a requestto build a bridge at the OldStronach Road Crossing ofthe Little Manistee River.

I went and looked at thebridge, and there presently

is two 12-foot culverts, saidSmithe. I think building abridge will allow the river toflow more freely.

Planning commissionmembers agreed by a 5-0

vote to send a letter support-ing the construction of the

bridge.However, the board

also voted 5-0 to oppose aUnited States EnvironmentalProtection Agency PublicNotice on an injection well

just over the ManisteeCounty line in MasonCounty. The planning com-

mission opposed the wellbecause they didnt feel it wasdeep enough to protect thedrinking water.

Planning commissionmember Gayle Crampton isleaving the board to pursue

business interests and to seeka seat on her own townshipplanning board after serv-ing four years on the county

board. The board passed amotion to honor her serviceto the board.
