been confirmed in 255 ofMichigans inland lakesand 17 rivers and streams,according to Michigan SeaGrant.

A small freshwater mol-lusk, the zebra mussel hasbeen invading Americasrivers and lakes since 1988.Zebra mussels originatedin the Balkans, Poland, andthe former Soviet Union.

Zebra mussels upsetecosystems, threaten nativewildlife, damage structures,and cause other seriousproblems. Millions of dol-

lars are spent each year inattempting to control thesesmall but numerous mol-lusks.
