Monte and Monica will be playing for Manistees special Frostbite HomeGrownSaturday on Feb. 20.

    Winter funManistee style

MANISTEE Among the most popu-ar events this past summer in Manisteeere the HomeGrown Saturdays thatacked people into the River Street area.

Manistee Main Street/Downtownevelopment Authority executive directorravis Alden said they couldnt have beenappier with what transpired with that

vent last summer and they want to keephe ball rolling in terms of the good spiritt created. That is why they have startedp a new program starting on Saturday,eb. 20 called Frostbite HomeGrownaturday.

The HomeGrown Saturdays last sum-er were such a hit, we wanted to do one

n the winter, said Alden. The downtownerchants really latched onto the idea and

veryones really excited.Alden said the timing couldnt be better

ecause this is the portion of winter whereveryone starts getting hit with a case ofabin fever. Everyone knows the best cureor a case of being stuck in the house dur-ng winter is to get out and enjoy someood fun.

It doesnt even matter if the tempera-ures dont warm up because they will beaving the activities indoors as the mainoncept is just to get people down into the

iver Street area. However, there is a dif-erent twist to the Frostbite HomeGrownaturday as opposed to the one that tooklace last summer.

Last summer anyone strolling Rivertreet would have the opportunity to take

n the sweet sounds of some great musicalntertainment provided by the buskersr street musicians. However, instead ofeing standing out in front of the business-s the buskers will be turning out theirusic inside the various storefronts during

hours of Frostbite HomeGrown Saturdaybetween the hours of noon and 4 p.m.

Many familiar names in the local musi-cal scene will be performing includingMonte and Monica Klein, Michala and

Carmin Jamison, Bill Ferguson and MartyYaple to name a few. There are many othermusicians that have signed up to takepart in the fun and it will give those tak-ing the time to come down to River Streetthe opportunity to hear some outstandingmusic.

However, music is just one of the com-ponents of the Frostbite HomeGrownSaturday as another one will be some-

thing that has a tastypart of it. Alden and thepeople at the DowntownDevelopment Authorityhave added an interestinglittle twist that is sure toappeal to everyone.

That is because theywill be hosting a ChiliHop where everyone willnot mind going out in thecold from store to storeto taste some of warm

delightful chili that is wait-ing for them all along RiverStreet. Every time they stopat a different downtown

merchant another goodtasting chili will be waitingto warm them up.

It is kind of like awalking chili cook-off, saidAlden. Everyone is a judgeand scores the entries. Yougo from store to store tosample the different variet-ies of chili while listeningto the buskers. Everyonegets a scorecard , scoreseach chili entry and then

turns in scores by 3:30p.m. for tallying.

Alden said that at4 p.m. the top three

chili contestants will beannounced with the win-ning entry taking home thefirst place prize of $100 inDowntown Dollars. Secondplace will win $40, andthird place will get $20.

There isnt any fee forentering the Chili Hop con-test, and entry forms can

be obtained in a variety ofdifferent ways. Entry formscan be downloaded at

www.mainsteedowntown.com, or obtained by callingthe Main Street/DowntownDevelopment Authority

office at 398-3262.Anyone from the pub-

lic who submits a fullscorecard in judging thechili will be automaticallyentered into a drawing for$50 in downtown dollars.

There is plenty of otherfun things to do during

Frostbite HomeGrownSaturday besides theChili Hop and the buskersplaying their music. TheBoathouse Grill will be

joining in the fun by host-ing a winter beer garden infront of their restaurant.

    Corn Hole games will

be played on River Streetbetween Oak Street andthe city marina fountain. For more information onthe Frostbite HomeGrownSaturday, contact Travisat 398-3262 or visit www.manisteedowntown.com

    If I wasnt a chamber manager...If I wasnt a Chamber

of Commerce manager, Ithink Id like to be a res-taurant critic, or maybe asecret shopper.

Heaven knows I haveextensive experience inboth eating out and shop-ping. Now, Im not an

especially picky eater, butI am a picky customer if by picky you mean Iwant great food, cheer-ful servers, a welcomingatmosphere and promptservice and I want it all ata fair price.

Is that picky?Or is that really just

what we should expectwhen we spend our hard-earned money?

    Lunch at LaFamilia

Last week, I had lunchat La Familia, the newMexican-style restaurantat 318 River Street. LaFamilia opened about amonth ago and has justoined the chamber.

During my lunch at LaFamilia, owners Stephenand Tanya Laredo cameout to say hello notust to me but to each

customer and not oncedid they approach a cus-tomer whose mouth was

full or who was in themiddle of a sentence withtheir lunch partner.

During my conver-sation with Stephen, Imentioned that I lovedpico de gallo (tomatoes, onions and cilantro kind of like salsa but notexactly) which was not onLa Familias menu.

Stephen excused him-self and came back out acouple of minutes laterwith what I suspect was acustom made bowl of pico

    de gallo. Thats excep-

tional service! It bodeswell for this new businessthat they have alreadymastered the conceptthat nothing is sacred in

business except that thecustomer comes back.

So stop in and wel-come this friendly new

business to Manistee andif enough people ask forpico de gallo, I bet wellsee it on the menu lick-ety-split.
