Officials from the Manistee County Museum and volunteers were on hand Fridaymorning for the dedication of a new historical marker on the corner of Cherry andFirst streets by the Manistee Riverwalk. The new marker will include a replica of a portion of the first large vessel to sail into the Manistee Harbor in the mid 1850scall the Kewaxicum. Manistee Countys newest historicalmarker was dedicated last week whenthe Manistee County Historical Museumhonored the scow schooner Kewaxicum, asbeing the first large vessel to sail this area

by the placing of a plaque and a replica of a portion of the ship along the Riverwalk by the corner of First and Cherry streets.

Manistee County Historical Museumexecutive director Steve Harold said thecreation of this historical marker was theoint effort of many people. He said it sig-

nifies many things about the early days of the Manistee community.

It was the first large vessel built inManistee and was built by a local car-penter, Andrew Sherwood, in 1855, saidHarold. There were only about 300 or400 people here at that time, but he hadthe talent to build it. It is built like a houseor a log cabin, and is called a scow schoo-

ner. It is like a rectangular box, and thisone had a small pointed bow, but they stillare all square timbers.

Harold said it was a time whenManistees logging and timber industry was about to erupt into a major business.Lumberman from this area helped providethe lumber that built many big cities inthe Midwest and schooners were used totransport it.

Sherwood built it in 1855 to haul tim-ber to Chicago, and he named it after thechief of the Little River Band of Ottawa

Indians named Kewaxicum, said Harold.Kewaxicum was in this area for 60 years,and lived to be 114 years old. The fact thatit was named after the chief is a good indi-cation of the good working relationship between the early settlers and the indians.

The museum director said the display they built to be placed at the First andCherry street location is a replica of themidsection portion of the vessel and half the size of the original. The display is toillustrate the simple construction of thestacked square timber style that was used

on the scow schooners.The original ship would have beenable to haul a couple of semis of lumber, asit was 80 to 90 feet in length with a beamof 24 feet, and depth of six to seven feet,said Harold.

Funds were donated form the con-struction of the replica by Ron and DonnaBauman in memory of his parents Gordonand Ella Mae Bauman. All of the funds went to purchase the materials, as the restof the work was done by Manistee County Historical Museum staff and volunteers.

A work crew of Manistee ClanMuzzloaders was put together by Henry Rozmarek and supervised by Ken Jilbertto handle the construction, said Harold.A friend of mine (C.Patrick LaBadie) whohas been on 10 contemporary boats likethis provided and the muzzle loaders putit all together. It is going to be permanenthere, and we are going to put in a concrete base and more permanent marker.

With the summer camping season infull swing, the Department of NaturalResources and Environment remindscampers that it is important to follow thestates land use regulations governingcamping on state land.

The DNRE wants camping to be afun and safe activity for everyone, saidDNRE forest recreation planner Brenda

Curtis. Following the state land rules andland use orders allows campers to havethe best experience possible, while alsoprotecting our environment and naturalresources for future generations to enjoy.

State land rules and land use ordersthat campers should be aware of includethe following:

Campers at a state park, state recre-tion area, public access site, or at stateorest and state game area designatedampgrounds may only camp at a desig-ated campsite. Campers must register

and pay a campsite fee for each night they occupy the campsite. Reservations andpayment for state park and recreationarea camping can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com/. Campsites instate forest and game area campgroundsare on a first-come, first-served basis, with payment made upon arrival.

Occupancy at a campsite is limited

to four unrelated individuals, or a singlefamily of eight. Campsites with familiesare limited to a maximum of four adults.

Dispersed camping is allowed on stateforest land year-round, and within stategame areas from Sept. 11 to May 14, if theproperty is not posted closed to camp-ing. Dispersed campsites on state forestland must be more than one mile fromany designated state forest campground. A camp registration card, available for nocharge, must be displayed at the dispersedcamping site. The registration cards can

be obtained at any DNRE OperationsService Center.

Dispersed campers may establish upto four campsites in one area. If morethan 20 individuals are dispersed camp-ing together, a DNRE event permit isrequired. Additionally, if there are five ormore campsites, or more than 32 camp-ers in an area, a temporary campground

permit is required from the local county health department, a copy of which must be provided when applying for the DNREevent permit.

A campsite may not be occupied formore than 15 consecutive nights. Campers who wish to continue camping after 15consecutive nights must move their campmore than one-half mile from the previ-ous campsite.

Campsites may not be left unoc-cupied for more than 24 hours. At leastone member of the camping party must

remain at the site during nighttime hours,or the campsite will be considered aban-doned.

A complete list of the state land rulesand land use orders is available online at www.michigan.gov/dnre. Copies are alsoavailable at any DNRE Operations ServiceCenter. Campers are encouraged to befamiliar with these regulations before

ANN ARBOR Faculty members fromthe University of Michiganwill serve as moderators,panelists and jurors in thefirst formal step toward abroader participation inthe international TraverseCity Film Festival.

The sixth annual docu-mentary and narrative filmcompetition will be held

in northern Michigan July 27-Aug. 1.Since its inception, the

Traverse City Film Festivalhas been a force in show-ing the international filmindustry the possibilitiesfor filmmaking in the stateof Michigan, said LeeDoyle, director of U-Msfilm office, which aims toattract filmmakers to cam-pus. With the universitysformal participation, wecan set our sights on pro-viding a gateway experi-ence to our students, and

foster the further develop-ment of the states fledg-ling film industry.

The festival held indowntown Traverse City,blocks from the majesticGrand Traverse Bay, hasgained a reputation forattracting the best inde-pendent world cinema.While providing a venuefor the appreciation of new and classic films, the fes-tival is a magnet to attractproducers from aroundthe world to Michigan,gaining wide recognitionas friendly to filmmakers,and making major stridesin diversifying its economy into nonmanufacturingsectors.

Since the enactmentof the states tax incentiveprogram, Michigan hasdrawn film productioncompanies from aroundthe country. In the lasttwo years, eight featurefilms have been shot on theU-M campus and greaterAnn Arbor. Attracting filmcompanies to the region

has translated into an eco-nomic boost for the localeconomy.

Along with realizingour goal of becoming a

major international filmfestival, we now can draw on the educational sup-port of the University of Michigan to lend its exper-tise to our educational ini-tiatives, said film festivalfounder and Oscar-winningfilmmaker Michael Moore.We celebrate great film-making, but also want tooffer opportunities for the

general public to deepenits appreciation of film.This year, U-M faculty

and film experts will provide extensive assistancein the judging of the morethan 100 films. In addition,the universitys faculty infilm criticism, literatureand drama will spearheadpanel discussions examin-ing how to critically under-stand film and assess latesttrends in filmmaking.

Faculty will teachseminars on screenwritingand acting for film at the

festivals on-location filmschool, which is open tothe public. The brainchildof Moore, the film schoolaims to teach the funda-mentals of film to peopleof all ages, and outsidetraditional educational set-tings.

In upcoming years,U-M will assist in an inter-national student short filmcompetition and faculty will be on hand to teachat a film camp for fledging young filmmakers.

For the last two years,U-M faculty and stu-dents have participatedin the festival. Last year,university film studentsproduced two short filmsthat premiered at thefestival. Screenwriter JimBurnstein, who headsU-Ms screenwriting pro-gram, presented seminarson the craft during thefestival. He will also be onhand this year to teach thepopular course.

Participation of U-Mfaculty is made possible by

a grant from the law firmof Miller Canfield, basedin Michigan with offices inthe United States, Canada,Mexico, Poland and China.

Michigan StateUniversity Extension(MSUE) is no different.Beginning July 1, MSUE will begin its transition to a new structure that emphasizes

responsiveness and focuseson important issues facingthe state.

Meeting the needs of those in our state throughthe expertise of MSU anddoing so as efficiently aspossible is what MSUExtension is all about, saidTom Coon, MSUE director.

The MSUE redesign ismeant to capitalize on theexpertise that can be offeredto the community throughExtensions network of edu-cators and specialists andour relationships with localpartners, Coon said.

Late in 2008, MSUEstarted a process to exam-ine its work and how it canfocus its resources to betterserve the states residents.The findings of that pro-cess, which included morespecialized educators in thefield, better connections between field staff and cam-pus researchers and a desireto leverage technology tomaximize effectiveness, were shared with severalaudiences around the state.

The result is a struc-

ture that ensures that MSUExtension will remainresponsive to Michigansneeds and apply research- based education to contrib-ute to a brighter future forall of Michigan residents,Coon said.

ference. They align with ourexpertise and with the needsand opportunities that areappropriate for a land-grantuniversity, like MichiganState University, to address,Coon said.

MSU Extension staff members, housed in county offices, are now organizedinto thirteen multi-county districts, each overseen by adistrict coordinator.
