You might be wondering, why does West Sacramento need small urban farms? Wouldn’t we just visit the larger farms? The Center for Land Based Learning’s West Sacramento Urban Farm Program addresses that exact question by bring- ing agricultural educa- tion, support for new farmers and resources to areas of West Sacra- mento described as food deserts. Urban farms re- place vacant lots, remove urban blight and increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables. “The idea of an urban farm is to be surrounded by the peo- ple, in the action; feeding neighbors in need,” said Mary Kimball, Executive Director, Center for Land Based Learning. Across form the South- port Town Center, lies a 3.3-acre site known as Lake Washington Farm. It’s one of four sites pro- cured by the Center for Land Based Learning, and converted to use as part of the West Sacra- mento Urban Farm Pro- gram. I then carefully made my way through Dave’s Pumpkin Patch at Vierra Farms to catch the tail end of the West Sac- ramento Police Department’s Community Meeting; held at the beautiful Bridgeway Lakes Boathouse. As the officers were wrapping up the meeting, Senior Lead Of- ficer Ryan Lukins was gracious enough to spend a few minutes with me. The meeting, on Tues- day, Nov. 2, was attended by more than 50 residents of West Sacramento. It was an open for- mat without any specific agenda. Chief Tom McDonald, of the West Sacramento Police De- partment, had invited the com- munity to meet members of the Police Department for an infor- mal gathering and an opportu- nity to engage in conversation. People had an opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns on a wide variety of topics. In general, people ex- pressed concerns about a recent uptick in theft for that area. As the Senior Lead Officer for the Southport beat of West Sacramento, officer Lukins ad- dressed the issues and provided his direct contact information for follow-up and further as- sistance. The officers also dis- cussed crime prevention tips and shared information about the police department’s efforts to directly address the inci- dences of theft; including the presence of police officers on bicycles, as well as patrol cars; assigned to rotating 24-7 shifts patrolling the neighborhoods. Additionally, the police de- partment has assigned trained police volunteers on bicycles to monitor the neighborhoods during daylight hours. I followed up with Sergeant Roger Kinney for additional details. The community meet- ings rotate every two to three months in the three Police De- partment beats: (1)Bryte-Brod- erick, (2)West Capital Corridor, and (3)Southport. The Senior Lead Officer for each beat lo- cates a venue and announce- ments are posted on a variety of social media platforms such as the police department’s Face- book and Twitter pages. The meetings are also posted the city of West Sacramento’s web- site. I inquired about reaching out to people who may not have access to computers or smart- phones, the elderly, or commu- nities with special needs. “We work closely with BB- CAN (The Bryte and Broderick Community Action Network) to get the information posted at libraries, community centers and senior centers. They even design and develop the fliers for the events to help spread the word,” Kinney said. According to Kinney, a large number of attendees heard about the meeting through so- cial media pages. The rest of the attendees learned about the meeting through information shared via an application (APP) known as Nextdoor. Approxi- mately 49,000 users from West Sacramento currently use and share information on the Next- door APP. Our neighboring Sacramento Police Department currently uses it to disseminate infor- mation. The West Sacramen- to Police Department is also considering creating a page on the Nextdoor APP. The police department currently main- tains an active presence on- line through Facebook, Twit- ter and other smartphone apps connected to the city of West Sacramento. These platforms allow people to access police department services quickly and stay informed. People cur- rently have the ability to fol- low police department tweets, send anonymous tips, submit feedback, and ask questions. While these forms of commu- nication may be convenient for non-emergency situations, people are reminded to always dial 9-11 in emergency and ac- tive situations. The police department has a mission to communicate ef- fectively with the community. In Kinney’s observation, the meetings have helped develop stronger connections with the community and have been an effective way to educate and assist residents with specific concerns and aid with crime prevention. Just within the last seven days prior to the writing of this article, Kinney reported a marked decrease in reports of crime. (Woodland, CA) – The special screening of “Making a Nation: The Untold Story of the Declaration of Independence (1776)” on Oc-tober 29 at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library was a great success with 24 people in attendance.

Yolo County Supervisor Oscar Villegas brought popcorn, pizza and water for guests, which included newly arrived refugees want-ing to expand their knowledge on the Decla-ration of Independence. “It was a great event,” said Programming

and Outreach Librarian Touger Vang. “The library is a great place to learn about new ideas and historical events.”This first 70 minute episode from the “In-

venting America: Conversations with the Founders” series highlighted the origins of the Declaration of Independence through an imagined retrospective panel interview of key players that shaped America; Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Frank-lin, as well as John Dickinson, a delegate who refused to sign the Declaration of Indepen-dence. Executive Producer Darell Schregar-dus also discussed the production of this and upcoming episodes. This event was presented by the Yolo Coun-

ty Library and the Friends of the West Sac-ramento Library, in partnership with Execu-tive Producer Darell Schregardus. For more information about upcoming events at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library, con-tact library staff at (916) 375-6465 or visit: www.yolocountylibrary.org (see calendar for Arthur F. “Inventing America” Screening at West Sacramento Library Indigo / Hammond &

Playle Architects, LLP won two major awards this fall for its artful and efficient adaptive-reuse office in walkable down-town Davis. USGBC Northern California’s In-novation Award honors projects that adopt in-novative green building products and practices. AIA Central Valley De-sign Awards recognize excellence in design by Central Valley firms. In-digo’s office captured both the USGBC Innovation Award and a Citation Award from AIA Cen-tral Valley. The building demonstrates principal architects Jonathan Ham-mond and Bruce Playle’s decades of innovation in the field of sustainable design as well as the com-mitment of their team. This uniquely expressive,

bioregionally appropriate building was designed to foster creativity and hu-man interaction and to be a living example of the firm’s mission to “inte-grate art, architecture and ecology”. Indigo is working toward Net Zero Energy Certification for the build-ing with the Living Future Institute, which will be achieved in the next year. The office occupies the

site of an old Dairy Queen restaurant, an underuti-lized lot adjacent to the railroad tracks and within walking distance from the Amtrak station and down-town businesses. Instead

of tearing the old struc-ture down and starting from scratch, Indigo opti-mized it, using it’s 1960’s “gull-wing” roofline as a starting point for an en-tirely new design with an addition, drought-tol-erant landscaping and a permeable site surface to help replenish precious groundwater. Curving strawbale walls in

the main office make use of rice straw, a local agricul-tural by product to provide a counterpoint to an addition clad in austere corrugated metal that pays tribute to the agricultural barn-ver-nacular of the Sacramento Valley. Structural columns were designed and fabri-cated by the architects, as were custom furnishings sculpted from local hard-

woods. Building occupants have direct access to outdoor courtyards that are made for working, eating and so-cializing. Smart orientation and well-placed overhangs insure that these spaces re-main shady in summer and sunny and protected in win-ter. Landscaping is achieved with drought-tolerant na-tive and naturalized plants, along with mature oak trees that were preserved on the site during construction. This climate-adapted

building uses its super-in-sulated strawbale walls and thermal heat sinks to maintain a comfortable at-mosphere year round, re-ceiving 90% of its heating and cooling energy from its environment. Natural light provides all lighting during the day, while ef-

ficient LEDs kick in after dark. In summer, windows are shielded from direct sunlight and a natural ven-tilation system brings sea breezes into the building to cool heat sinks. In the win-ter, lower-angle sunlight warms the heat sinks. The insulated building envelope maintains steady, comfort-able indoor temperatures. These elements have

combined to create an award-winning building in the heart of downtown Davis, a community that prides itself on bikeability and ecological awareness. Indigo Architects has placed itself on the leading edge of sustainable design and con-struction while maintaining its artful approach: site-sen-sitive, innovative and with a human touch.

for the citizens of West Sacramen-to, we are pleased to provide sup-port to the Center for Land-Based Learning through our time and funding, as well as community service efforts such as the Annual Urban Farm Work Day,” said Mike Miille, Head of Biologics at Bay-er Crop Science and site lead for the volunteer work day. “We hope that the Lake Washington Farm will continue to expand and serve as a model for sustainable agricul-ture in West Sacramento as well as educate participants on the impor-tance of growing safe, healthy food to nourish our growing population.”

The volunteers were split into three working groups for the day: manual weeding and clearing, har-vesting; and painting an agricultur-al mural on the food storage bins. Arturo Romero, artist, heading up the mural team; also created the mural at the 5th and C Street ur-ban farm.I took some time to walk around

and speak to the volunteers and the farmers. The volunteers enjoyed being out of the office and working “in the dirt,” supporting the com-munity. Council member Chris Ledesma,

the day, Bayer Crop Science also

donated $10,000 to the Center for Land Based Learning. “Their do-nation helps fund the Urban Farm Program for new farmers, helps us acquire land, build agricultural in-frastructure, and continue agricul-tural education programs for youth and the new generation of urban farmers,” said Mary Kimball. The food harvested from Lake

West Sacramento May-or Christopher Cabaldon, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Wells Fargo joined in an event last week to cele-brate a 2015 First Place CommunityWINS (Work-ing/Investing in Neigh-borhood Stabilization) Grant Award for small-sized cities. An award in the amount

of $150,000 was presented to the West Sacramento Foundation for The Future-Ready Program - which connects students studying engineering, science and technology to work-based learning internships and job training. The award is part of a nationwide Com-munity WINS Program made possible by a grant from USCM and the Wells Fargo Foundation collabo-ration. “Our prosperity as a

community depends on our young people getting access to 21st Century skills, technical training, workplace experience, and quality teaching and learning,” said May-or Cabaldon, who leads the FutureReady steer-ing committee. “We’re launching an ambitious initiative in partner-ship with companies and schools, with a promise that our community’s employers will guaran-tee a paid internship for every high school stu-dent who is on track in a high-quality pathway that both prepares them for college and gives them strong skills in one of our fast-growing job sectors. Winning this prestigious national competition is the essential starter fuel to power our success. This is our best hope of closing the skills gap be-tween our workforce and our emerging jobs, and of making education rele-vant for teens as part of

a suite of initiatives to turn our whole city into a classroom.”The 2015 Community-

WINS awards include mon-etary grants to city-based nonprofit organizations and recognize mayors for exem-plary leadership in develop-ing local programs that pro-mote long-term economic prosperity and improve the quality of life for residents in three categories: neigh-borhood stabilization, eco-nomic development, and job creation. An independent panel of judges, selected by The U.S. Conference of Mayors, determined the six winning cities from a pool of 162 applicants in three population groups – small, medium and large.“Our students deserve

every opportunity to de-velop the skills they need to be college and career ready,” said Washington Unified Superintendent Linda C. Luna. “Future-Ready does a great job of expanding on classroom instruction by immers-ing our kids in relevant, real-world work applica-tions, keeping them mo-tivated and on track to graduate with the skills they need to enter the

21st century workforce.”Junior and senior high

school students in the Engineering, Science and Technology Acade-my at River City High School (the largest high school in the district) in the FutureReady pro-gram will be provided high-quality, work-based learning opportunities that align with their cur-riculum. Through paid internships with local engineering, science and advanced-manufacturing companies, students will be prepared for success in an entry level job and/or post-secondary educa-tion. Employers will ben-efit by having increased access to a local labor pool that has completed industry-relevant aca-demic coursework and has previous on-the-job experience. Tom Cochran, CEO and

Matías Bombal’s HollywoodSPECTRE The MPAA has rated this PG-13

Sony, via the union of Co-lumbia Pictures and Met-ro-Goldwyn-Mayer give us “Spectre”. This is the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise of films, or 26th if you include “Casi-no Royale” and “Never Say Never Again”. Daniel Craig is 007 for the fourth time. The criminal organization of SPECTRE returns from the other stories featured in past Bond pictures. The letters of SPECTRE signify Special Executive for Count-er-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. Director Sam Mendes is

back from the previous Bond picture, “Skyfall”, and cin-ematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema lights the classic Bond look in a way that will please fans. This movie was shot entirely digitally. Just as in the shift from film to digi-tal, the story centers around the push to eliminate real members of Her Majesty’s Se-cret Service in favor of digital surveillance with technology. Plans are in the works to tie all nations security systems into one general surveillance service. Actor Andrew Scott plays “C”, the instigator of this new order of watchful-ness. Early in the picture “C” breaks the news to “M”, played by the always elegant Ralph Fiennes, that his days and that of the 00 agents are at an end. You may well imagine how that goes over. This seems not to affect

our hero Bond, James Bond, who we first see on a mis-sion of his own in Mexico City, during the pageantry of Dia de los Muertos as he tracks a killer with links to SPECTRE. Following a spectacular building de-struction, huge crowd scenes of the costumed revelers, and some fine helicopter ac-

robatics, Bond gets his man, only to find that it turns out to be a lead to Rome. Don’t all roads lead to

Rome? Bond is witness to a secret

international meeting of the all powerful SPECTRE, the Illuminati of international crime world, but is singled out in the room by this mov-ie’s top villain, Herr Ober-hauser, played with calm-ness by Christoph Waltz. With clever and typical der-ring-do, Bond wiggles his way out and makes his sud-den departure in the pride and joy of the Aston-Mar-tin firm of motor makers; a car just for Bond, the Aston Martin DB 10, of which only 10 cars were made. Bond now must find Ober-

hauser, for he suspects a connection between his ne-farious plans and that of “C” back at MI6. Of course, his adventures lead him past many faces (and more) of beautiful women, begin-ning in Rome, then eventu-ally Austria where he finds Madeleine Swann, played by lovely Léa Seydoux. On board the Orient Ex-

press, Bond and Swann move from the wagon-lit to the dining car where we see a moment of calm before a typical Bond movie inter-ruption; This movie’s tough henchman, Hinks, played by Dave Bautista, who you may remember from “Guardians of the Galaxy”, attacks Bond relentlessly, channeling “Oddjob” from “Goldfinger”. There’s a nice tip of the hat

in this scene to a moment in “Jaws”, but with similar shaped objects all in a row being pulled overboard (or in this case, off the railroad car) one by one. It just might spell Hink’s demise, but you’ll have to see it to find out. With all of the great ex-

pense lavished on each of the Bond movies, and this is no exception, you’d think we’d have a hit on our hands. The fantastic photog-raphy, stunts and beautiful international settings don’t bring this 007 to life. This movie falls flat. The story wanders lightly from one event to the next. The char-acters are not developed to the point where you want to hate them or like them. The only exception, where

the movie has some lightness deftly handled, are the scenes featuring actor Ben Wishaw as “Q”, a role he recreates from the last Bond release, “Sky-fall”. As the nerdy MI6 gad-get guy who has dependent cats, he offers some charm in a movie that is slick without substance. We don’t even get the cleverly named Ian Flem-ing type Bond girls, aside from Miss Moneypenny. The best line of the movie

comes from Oberhauser as he tells of the many wom-en in Bond’s life by saying “a long line of pretty faces on your way to death” I’ll paraphrase that and say: after a long line of excellent 007 movies, this one dies an unfortunate death. Perhaps they should not have started the picture with “Dia de los Muertos”. I was shaken, not stirred by this Bond offer-ing. Too bad, they can be so fun! In IMAX and standard screenings throughout the nation.

Nov. 13: Feeding the hun-gry with a Yolo Food Truck event: On behalf of an ef-fort to bring surplus food to the many who are hungry in Yolo County, local folks Renee Dryfoos and Heidi Smith, became aware that one in four children, and one in six adults in our county do not have ade-quate food. Yet, there are many farmers and mer-chants prepared to donate fresh foods. The problem is that the county food bank, does not have a refrigerat-ed truck which can access the many donors, and the distribution points. So, a small group decided to raise funds for a food truck to feed the hungry. They have a crowd-funding cam-paign, and will now be host-ing a number of events. As this is a county wide effort, they have events in vari-ous locations. The first is in West Sacramento, Nov. 13. at Yolo Brewery, where they will have an evening full of music (customers can hear the old LP’s they bring get a “spin”), beer, and door prizes.
