Antique photographs, an-cient Chinese opera masks, the Buddha, dragons, and American history inspired the art created for the May exhibition at Gallery 625 in Woodland. The exhibition has been assembled in hon-or of Asian-Pacific American Heritage month and includes painted screens, brush paint-ings, photographs, and mixed media art of seven regional artists. The artists showing their

work include Ann Marie Campbell, Yuko Carson, Alan Fishleder, Ron Hall, Irene Leung, Lyla Paakkanan, and Randy Won. The Asian art theme was chosen for May as it is Asian-Pacific American Heritage month. According to the Library of Congress, this nationally recognized heri-tage month commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and marks

the anniversary of the com-pletion of the transcontinen-tal railroad on May 10, 1869, as the majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chi-nese immigrants.

Some Eastern Inspiration show highlights:“Through my work, I explore

and communicate and height-en what exits already in these fascinating cultures - beauty, strength, hope, and longevi-ty,” said Ann Marie Campbell in her artist statement for the show. Campbell’s paintings are sparked from antique pho-tographs from Japan and Chi-na and her medium is oil, egg tempera, and acrylic paints. Artist Leung will be exhibit-

ing three works from a series of twelve acrylic painitings called “The Masks.” This se-ries on canvas paper draw inspiration from ancient Chi-nese opera masks, where the colors of the masks are in-tended to function as a uni-versal language communicat-

ing to the audience character, intent, and origin. The masks provide a bridge to the realms of western modern art and ancient Chinese traditions, according to Leung’s artist statement.Paakkanen’s dragon screens

are the result of her love of dragon lore and fascination with reptiles. She studied herpetology as an undergrad-uate, and found sea snakes particularly fascinating due to their graceful movement. According to her artist state-ment, her dragon screens evolved from “my drawings, then paintings of kimonos, then just dragons on large swaths of heavy paper to be hung.” She later switched to canvas due to the weight of the paint on paper, and the dragon screens are painted on both sides.Artist Yuko Carson will be

demonstrating brush painting throughout the exhibition’s opening reception.The UC Davis Gamelan Leb-

do Budoyo will perform Indo-nesian orchestra music fea-turing bronze gongs, chimes, and other melodic percussion instruments. The university ensemble will be performing from 6 - 6:30 p.m. during the reception.Eastern Inspiration will run

through May 31 at Gallery 625, the public art gallery cu-

Proposed City Charter Will Need Voter ApprovalBy Jan DalskeWhen the City of West Sacramento (CWS) was

incorporated in 1987, the city was considered to be a “General Law City” (GLC) as there was no City Charter in place. Cities in California are classified as either a Charter City or a General Law City. In June of 2015, Mayor Cabaldon, in a letter to

the City Council, requested “concurrence with the scheduling of a future agenda item to propose a City Charter to the voters following its develop-ment by the City Council, convened as a commit-tee of the whole”.Mayor Cabaldon felt that the “basic structure

of city government has served the West Sacra-mento community well”. He does not want to con-sider any fundamental changes, such as moving from a council-manager form of government to a strong-mayor form, or to a full-time mayor and/or council. He believes that “we should strive to de-velop a lean charter, but no other matters would be excluded from consideration prior to the coun-cil’s scoping sessions”.The Charter Adoption Timeline indicates the

scheduling of two properly noticed public hear-ings on the proposed charter in May and June of this year. July 19, 2016 is the expected Yolo County deadline for the CWS to adopt a resolu-

City Pitcher Delivers with a No-Hitter” unfortunate-ly quoted coach Clint Brill, who listed the no-hitter pitchers in the history of River City/Marshal High School. After the story ran, a call was fi elded to the Ledger’s offi ce by the fi rst no-hitter in the school’s history, Phillip Cornejo, class of 1984. The game was against Galt and his RC coach at the time was Mr. Marks. Phillip has a video of that game which

was taken by his long-time little league coach Ray Meza. “It’s a boring tape to watch but it’s history,” said Phillip last week. “I also had the fewest walks, 11 walks, in 68 innings. I got a medal for that, too.”Referring to the aforementioned article, Cornejo

The event also fea-tured sailing demonstrations, knot tying, and inexpen-sive food. There were different small and several different types of larger “small” sailboats that visitors got to ride in. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has deter-mined that the City of West Sacramento qualifies for federal Entitlement status for the receipt of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding. HUD requires that Entitlement cities develop a five- year Consolidated Plan assess-ing the needs of low- and moderate-in-come residents and neighborhoods. His style and content very much resembles many of the real life so-called money gurus of TV like Jim Cramer and his show, “Mad Money” on CNBC. Gates makes it through each show with the aid of long-time producer and director Patty Fenn, played by Julia Roberts. She has been withholding from him that she is courting another job at a rival network. They have a past together.During one broadcast,

what appears to be a deliveryman appears in Patty’s view, carrying two large parcels behind one of the stage sets. Not knowing if it is part of the act, she has the cam-era and sound man move in, and Gates improvis-es. The delivery man sets the parcels down and pulls a gun out of his back pocket and fires

it into the air. He now has the attention of ev-eryone in the studio, yet many watching TV and accustomed to the stunts pulled by Gates, cannot tell if it is a comedy bit or real life drama.In fact, a hostage situ-

ation is in full effect. He threatens Gates’ life un-less the cameras remain on for him to address an issue of burning concern. The deliveryman turned gunman is actor Jack O’ Connell. He plays young Kyle Budwell. Bulwell then mounts an explosive vest onto the TV host as his desper-ation builds. Budwell had risked everything, his entire savings, at the suggestion of one of Gates’ possible mon-ey making investments, a company called Ibis. The Ibis representative Diane Lester (Caitriona Balfre) is brought on to the show at once and it seems that Kyle’s great loss was not merely a computer glitch, but more... what is really go-ing on?The tension mounts

with each scene and this is a well-made movie. Jodie Foster as direc-tor proves that she has gifts in all aspects of the cinema. The perfor-mances are top notch as the situation escalates. Whilst Patty has all of

her key staff investi-gating the details about Ibis, the police depart-ment have plans of their own, sneaking in snipers into the studio catwalks at key locations to stand by for action. Actor Gi-ancarlo Esposito is the chief of police, a reason-able man. His deputies want to shoot both men for the safety of others.You’ll just have to see

Also, scoring big for the boys were Landon Hubbard with 16 points, Darrell Johnson with 16 points, Keith Cole with 13 points and won the triple jump. Gabe Baker scored 12 points and be competing next week. The women were led by Brianna Staffler who won the high jump, finished second in the 100 hurdles, sixth in the 300 hurdles and ran on the 4x100 relay team that fin-ished third with 20.5 points. Aaliyah Smith had 16 points, Faith Grewe had 8 points and Cierra Smith had 7.5 points. These competitors will also be joined by Riley Tilson, Angelo Bruce, and Cianna Pruitt. during a call for service and was observed going through the trash at the apartment complex. A records check showed him to be on parole and have a warrant for his arrest from parole.

served by witnesses driving his vehicle. He stopped in the middle of the road and drove into his driveway. The suspect stumbled from the car and went inside. About 15 minutes later, officers contacted the suspect and he was extremely intoxi-cated. The suspect could not perform tests.

The suspect was a pas-senger in a vehicle that was stopped for a ve-hicle code violation. A records check revealed the suspect had an out-standing warrant and was booked into Yolo County Jail.

tacted for a mental breakdown. The sus-pect was uncooperative with fire and AMR so the police department was called. Prior to the police department, the suspect stated to that he smoked meth-amphetamine about an hour prior. He dis-played objective signs of intoxication, dilat-ed pupils, high bodily temperature and un-controlled fighting.

for driving under the influence.

Reporting date and time: May 8 at 5:20 p.m.Location of incident: Cas-selman Drive and An-drews StreetThe suspect confront-

ed the victim on the block of 500 C Street. The suspect asked the victim if he “banged” – (street slang vernac-ular for being a mem-ber of a criminal street gang). The victim stat-ed that he did not and then let the scene with-out further interaction with the suspect. At about 5 p.m., the vic-tim was driving with two other victims in his vehicle, southbound on Casselman Street. The victim then observed the suspect driving in his vehicles, westbound on Andrews Street at the intersection with Casselman Street. Both vehicles came to a stop and the passen-ger of Lopez’s vehicle, a second suspect, exited

the vehicle and point-ed a firearm at the vic-tim’s vehicle. This sec-ond suspect attempted to fire the gun at the victim but the firearm malfunctioned and he was unsuccessful. The two suspects then fol-lowed the victim for a short distance as he fled the scene in his ve-hicle. The first suspect is on active parole from Sacramento County for assault with a deadly weapon (firearm) and assault with a dead-ly weapon (other than firearm). The first suspect is a validated member of the Norteno criminal street gang. He was taken into cus-tody a short time later on a high risk traffic stop. The second sus-pect was also taken into custody.

two suspects later iden-tified as two men were loitering in the area and walked up their private driveway and attempted to open their locked car doors. The witness had video sur-veillance that matched the description of both individuals. Both of them had no lawful reason to be in the area at that time. Just pri-or to this call two sus-pects matching their description were seen inside another vehicle that the owner had left the door unlocked in the same area.

contacted both suspects at Suisun Bay Road and Golden Gate moments later as they were walking away from the area. They matched one of the men with the suspect description provided. During a con-sent search of the sus-pect, the officer locked a homemade burglary tool that resembled a vehicle key and a flash-light. A records check showed him to be on searchable probation out of Yolo County.

was dispatched to the location on a report of a fight between two fe-males. The officer ar-rived on scene where he located a victim with se-vere head trauma. The victim stated she was hit in the head multiple times with a baseball bat. The victim had what appeared to be a swollen face and what appeared to be blood all over her face and clothing. The victim stated her attack-er was a white female adult with reddish hair, wearing a black hood-ie. The victim fell down due to the initial strike of the bat and contin-ued to state the suspect continued to attack her using both fists and the bat. The victim ran away however the suspect ran after her and caught her and continued to at-tack the victim with her fists. The victim stated the suspect said “I’m go-ing to kill you” multiple times. The victim stat-ed she did not know the female and had never met her. Assisting of-ficers located a female matching the descrip-tion of the suspect near the location of incident. An independent witness positively identified the suspect as the victim’s attacker. Assisting offi-cers also found the base-ball bat which was used in the commission of the alleged crime.

May 19: Second of three parts in attachment par-enting series: Explore how to help heal the hearts of abused and neglected chil-dren at a special three-part class series on attachment parenting this month. The Woodland Community Col-lege Foster and Kinship Care Education Program will present “Building Blocks of Attachment” from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thurs-days, May 12, 19 and 26. These classes are free and open to the public, and co-incide with National Foster

Care Month. The attach-ment series will feature local marriage and family therapist Debra Wiegel, who will discuss ways fos-ter and adoptive parents and relative caregivers can facilitate a child’s secure attachment — the founda-tion for positive human in-teraction and building safe-ty and trust in the world. Wiegel, who has more than two decades experi-ence working with abused and traumatized children and their foster, birth and adoptive families, will give an overview of attachment parenting, discuss how vital a parent’s role is to the trust cycle, and look at “emergent resiliency”. Some of the top-ics to be discussed include: Defining attachment, how attachment can become compromised, behaviors associated with insecure or anxious attachment, how grief and loss play into the equation, effective parent-ing techniques that work with hurt children who don’t trust and are striv-ing to control their world. If you are a senior (age 65 or older) or a resident with a disabili-ty, and are unable to drive, you may qualify for a free bulky waste pick-up ap-pointment. May 21: 32nd Annual Big-gest Little Car Show: The Golden Hills Mustang Club presents the 32nd Annual Biggest Little Car Show at the Suisun City Waterfront Plaza, 558 Solano St.Registration is from 7 to 9 a.m. the day of the show. The show is free to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reg-istration cost per car is $35. This is an all FORD show, featuring Mustangs, Fords and Ford powered vehicles.
