Dear Friends,

For over three decades the people of the Sacramento Region have placed their trust and support with the Sacramento Tree Foundation to grow and care for our urban forest. Thank you!

This year Sacramento was named one of the top ten tree cities in the nation. We strive every day to earn this recognition for all 22 cities and six counties in our region. Alongside civic, business and community leaders we work in our parks and schools, neighborhoods and business districts to bridge the link between tree canopy and the host of benefits that make our region an attractive and desirable place to live, work and play.

In 2015 Our Sacramento Shade partnership with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District celebrated its 25th anniversary, after having planted more than half a million energy-saving trees with their customers. This is the most distinguished program of its kind in the nation.

In 2016 we’ll continue to offer proven programs like Sacramento Shade and our native oak plantings, and we’ll be “digging deeper” to expand programs like NeighborWoods, which provides trees, education and partnerships to neighborhoods that need tree canopy the most. Seed to Seedling, which motivates elementary school children to grow oak seedlings on the window sills of their classrooms will be expanded. We’ll also be reaching out to our regions’ builders to make certain new neighborhoods will be designed to protect existing trees and to optimize the benefits of new trees.

Just as our trees need water, soil and sunshine to grow and prosper, so the Sacramento Tree Foundation needs your support as donors and volunteers to grow the best urban forest. No gift of time or funding is too small to help grow a better future for our trees and our quality of life.

Sincerely,

Ray Tretheway Executive Director

With the support of our donors, the guidance of our board of directors, and the hard work of staff and hundreds of volunteers, the Sacramento Tree Foundation achieved great things for our urban forest over the past year.

Bringing the benefits of trees to under-resourced neighborhoods: STF hired its first Community Engagement Manager to build partnerships and investment within target communities such as Rancho Cordova and South Sacramento. A new $1million Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grant from CalFire will significantly expand this program in 2016.

Bringing trees to public spaces: STF re-tooled and expanded its Community Shade Tree Program to provide more education to our partners and increase survival rate of the trees we provide to parks and schools.

Educating homeowners about tree selection, placement and care: Our 25 year old Sacramento Shade program funded by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District continued to receive stellar approval rates from program participants and delivered more than 10,000 shade trees to property owners throughout Sacramento County.

Getting the word out: Working with statewide partners, STF spread the word far and wide about how to care for trees during our region’s historic drought. Our “Save our Water, Save our Trees” messages were shared through local television, radio and newspapers, as well as through social media, workshops, publications, our website, and e-newsletters.

Applying technology to improve program results: A new, more user-friendly GIS mapping system increased efficiency and accuracy, and allows STF staff to map and monitor trees in real-time using iPads or iPhones. Enhancements to our customized Sales Force database allow us to track detailed information for each volunteer, participant, and donor and focus our communications accordingly.

Maintaining our region’s native tree canopy by planting new native trees: STF planted 2,537 replacement trees (almost 1,000 more than last year!), enhanced 43.7 acres of habitat, and monitored and cared for 5,633 native trees.

Building partnerships to grow more trees: In 2015, STF continued our tradition of working with many partners to expand our education and planting efforts. Key partners included the North Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, City of Folsom Parks, Sacramento County Waste Management and Recycling, GreenAcres Nursery, San Juan Water District, USDA Forest Service, CalFire, and AmeriCorps.
