Oil-based mud is blended with a mix-ing agent, such as low-grade lime, before application. Additionally, the company hauls water fromdrilling sites to its own disposalwells.J&L Oilfield Services works

with a large list of customers, mainly in western Oklahoma andthe panhandle of Texas, servicingnearly 70 wells. It employs about400 people, and in addition to itsheadquarters in Shattuck, the com-pany has yards in Enid, Chickasha,Burns Flat, Cheyenne and Vici. Itservices more than 35 percent ofthe active rigs in Oklahoma andmore than four percent of theactive rigs in the United States.“Last year was a record year for

us on several fronts,” said Schultz.“Our employee list increased tonearly 400, our hours of servicejumped 20 percent, and we loggeda record number of miles traveled.More importantly, our safetyrecord continued to shine. Our totalrecordable incident rate was wellbelow the national average. Wealso maintained our record of zeroregulatory fines since we foundedthe company.”“Our adage is ‘Let’s do what is

right!’” added Swanson. “We fol-low that philosophy in everythingwe do, from the safety of our workforce and practices to providing themost environmentally sensitiveway of disposing of the cuttings. We carefully plan to ensure sus-tainability and minimize impact.”J&L Oilfield Services takes a

diligent approach to cutting dispos-al, starting with assessing the landwhere it will apply the cuttings. The company takes samples froma potential disposal site and tests

the existing soils in its lab. It alsocoordinates with independent labsto conduct soil and waste research.“We want to ensure the land can

handle the cuttings with no detri-mental effects,” said Schultz. “Ifit’s all right, we’re good to go. Weapply the cuttings right on top ofthe existing ground. Under mostconditions, the area where weplace the cuttings will be back tooriginal ground level within a fewmonths.”

Launches ECO1J&L Oilfield Services pioneered

innovation in environmental sensi-tivity when it introduced its ECO1land application system. Duringdevelopment, the company con-ducted a massive drilling-wasteanalysis and coordinated and com-

pleted multiple university researchprojects that analyzed total petrole-um hydrocarbon degradation andsalt leaching.“Traditional waste management

presents challenges, including thechance that even the most skilledoperators will make mistakes thatcould have negative impacts on theenvironment,” said Swanson. “We

designed ECO1 to mitigate thatpossibility through automatedapplication management. It startswith capturing site-specific charac-teristics, such as vegetation, slope, sensitive areas and site perimeters,on a mobile mapping device. It’ssimilar to GPS systems for plant-ing and fertilizing on a farm orpreparing a construction site.”Armed with the information,

site specialists can establish anapplication plan. The system’scontrol center combines site-suit-ability findings, lab analysis andregulatory standards and sediment-trapping calculations to createapplication instructions that arewirelessly transmitted to the com-pany’s fleet of trucks. When anapplication begins, the instructionsautomatically govern the applica-

tion rate and material placement, and it ceases if a boundary isbreached or if rates approach regu-latory or environmental limits.“We believe this revolutionizes

waste disposal from an oil- andgas-drilling standpoint,” saidSwanson. “It also has applicationsfor mining or other industries thatproduce waste. For instance, wecan conduct a land analysis todetermine if an area is suitable totake iron-rich waste from a mine. The earth will take back the naturalproducts it produces, and ECO1determines the proper rate to applyit. It’s true recycling.”

Houston no longer has a problem when it relates to reduc-ing downtime as PIRTEK has recently opened a new HoseService Center in Jersey Village, Texas. Conveniently locat-ed just off I-290, customers will have easy access to the newHose Service Center where custom built high pressure hosescan be made over-the-counter while they wait.

Carrying a wide range of inventory which includes 3,600,5,000 and 6,000 psi hydraulic hoses, quick disconnect cou-plings, adapters, hose clamps, pressure wash hoses, nozzlesand wands, pressure gauges and 50 ft. (15 m) utility hoses, will make PIRTEK Jersey Village a one stop shop for manylocal companies.

The Hose Service Center also will act as a home base forthree on site hose workshops that are available 24/7. Just onecall to PIRTEK Jersey Village will get a fully trained hoseservice technician on their way to a job site within one hour. Each on site hose workshop is fully equipped and stocked tomanufacture hose assemblies on the spot.

Jim Phillips, the franchise owner of this new PIRTEKHose Service Center, plans to use his years of experienceowning a number of Snap On routes to good use.

“Having personally dealt with many companies who havealready embraced the concept of having a vehicle comingonto their job site or their facility indicates they alreadyunderstand the value of not having to continually run downthe road to find parts,” said Phillips.

“The cost of downtime is huge and it not only relates toone piece of equipment, it can involve a crew of constructionworkers relying on a backhoe or a manufacturing facilitystopping a whole production line because one small hosefailed.”

PIRTEK Jersey Village opened its doors for business onMay 27 and has already received multiple calls from cus-tomers who needed a fast response to get their equipmentback up and running with one simple phone call.

On site service is available around the clock by calling281/741-2979. The Hose Service Center is open Mondaythrough Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8a.m. to noon.

Zoo’s $57M Elephant Lands Project Proceeds on Scheduleresearch at other zoos around the world andvisited them to figure out what made for thebest habitat and sub-strata for elephants andwhat type of activities they would like toengage in.”The research took staff to the Dublin,

Copenhagen, Dallas, Denver and Syracusezoos.Elephant Lands construction is being con-

ducted by Lease Crutcher Lewis (withoffices in Portland and Seattle) andGoodfellow Bros. (with offices inWashington, Oregon, Hawaii andCalifornia). Both companies recognize thecomplexity and challenges of the project. The new habitats feature shade structures,

pools, misters, and a lot of enrichmentaspects including timed feeders, logs, sandmounds and browse hoists.“It really encompasses all trades, with an

emphasis on heavy civil work,” said Lewis’sAndy Dykeman, manager of the project.“The enclosure is surrounded by a bollardcable barrier system. There are also someshotcrete walls. The design and infrastruc-ture have to work on multiple levels and theconstruction unifies the many systemsrequired to run Elephant Lands smoothlyand efficiently.”The new buildings, barrier system,

mechanical and plumbing system and otherelements will likely require 5,000 cu. yd.(4,180 cu m) of concrete, 595 tons (540 t) ofsteel, 30,000 ft. (9,144 m) of trenching andvarious piping, and 60,000 cu. yd. (45,873cu m) of excavation and embankment. To keep the elephant family comfortable

throughout the project, animal-care staff andconstruction managers devised a plan toopen Elephant Lands in phases, graduallyexpanding the elephants’ accessible space. “We are making sure the elephants always

have at least as much space as they didbefore construction started,” said Rahn. The project reached a big milestone in

February as crews completed work onwhat’s now known as the Encounter Habitat— a sandy field in the southern portion ofthe site, which the zoo’s elephant family isnow enjoying daily.“Lease Crutcher Lewis has done an amaz-

ing job of phasing the construction, so theelephants can stay on site the entire time,”Mitchell said.In March, crews began laying ground-

work for what will soon be known as ForestHall — a vast, sunlit arena housing one ofthe largest, most innovative indoor elephantspaces in the country. Adjacent to ForestHall, a spacious new indoor holding area —with three 1,600-sq.-ft. (149 sq m) stalls forelephant care — will replace the zoo’s cur-rent holding area, which dates to 1959. Together, the two facilities will sit on

32,000 sq. ft. (2,973 sq m), with a roof reach-ing up to 36 ft. (11 m) at its highest point.

Both indoor spaces will be filled at least 4 ft.(1.2 m) deep with sand to cushion and pro-tect the elephants’ feet. An elephant-sized“air curtain” separating Forest Hall from theoutdoor areas will maintain a constant, com-fortable indoor temperature for pachydermsand visitors, while providing the herdaround-the-clock access to the rest ofElephant Lands’ 6.25-acre spread. Dykeman said building this spacious new

structure will require everything from tradi-tional building components, mechanical-electrical systems, concrete and glazing to“lots of structural steel components for thebarrier systems surrounding elephant enclo-sures.” In addition, the rooftop will feature a huge

array of solar panels as well as an 8,600 sq.ft. (799 sq m) green-roof system designed tosave energy, decrease stormwater runoff andabsorb carbon dioxide. The entire structurewill use 60 percent less energy than a typicalcode building, according to Mitchell, andproduce 40 percent fewer greenhouse gasemissions.“Sustainability is a priority for the zoo and

for the voters who approved the bond meas-ure,” Rahn said. “It’s something we’velooked at since the planning stages for all ofour projects.”All the bond-funded projects have a goal

of achieving LEED Silver certification, shesaid.“But we always strive to do better than

that,” added Mitchell. “The last project wecompleted, a new veterinary medical center, was certified LEED Gold.”“Sustainability components have become

the norm for higher-end construction, espe-cially on the West Coast,” said Dykeman, who has been involved in many LEED proj-ects and is considered an authority on sus-tainable construction. “We’ve implementedsystems within the company — and thearchitects and subcontractors are used toworking with them — so the actual cost tomanage or implement LEED certification ispretty minimal and routine.”The zoo’s Lilah Callen Holden Elephant

Museum was demolished in November2013, as was a minor concrete trussle, whichresulted in significant amounts of concreteand steel material that was able to be recy-cled.“Material recycled from the museum

demolition consisted of CMU block andround wooden timbers that were used to sup-port the roof structure,” said Dykeman. “TheCMU was crushed and repurposed for fill, and the heavy timbers were reused as wind-screen walls. The recycling of materials is aunique and interesting story and importantfor LEED certification. A high percentage ofthe zoo’s old elephant barn, a primarily con-crete structure, will also be crushed and usedfor fill. It is important to make sure thatwe’re using as much of that as possible and

diverting it from the landfill.”Demolition of the elephant barn — an

Eisenhower-era relic that has seen more than25 elephant births starting with Packy in1962 — is expected to occur in June 2015.Bringing it down will result in significantamounts of concrete rubble— all of whichwill be recycled to be reused in the project asfill material. Once complete, Elephant Lands will

extend around much of the Oregon Zoo’seastern border — from south of the currentelephant habitat north into the area that for-merly housed Elk Meadow — and connect-ing all the acreage has required majorchanges to the terrain, including regradingand earth-moving work by Goodfellow.“There has been a significant amount of

cut-and-fill to get the grades right,”Dykeman said. “We added a retention sys-tem to actively manage stormwater and min-imize the discharge. And we installed aseries of H-pile walls, lagging and soil nailwalls to assist with some of the changes inthe terrain.”Because site grading is so important, a tre-

ble GPS system is being used, including atotal station.“It’s a heavily forested area,” said

Goodfellow’s John Kirsch. “And with tradi-tional GPS we can’t get enough satellite sig-nals, so we have to augment that with a totalstation. Our dozers and excavators are allguided, plus we’ve got two rovers and a totalstation controlling the work. This helps tomeet the tight schedule. We also have a 3-Dmodel for the civil side that allows us tostage the work. There are multiple stages, soit is a bit of a balancing act to ensure we haveenough materials to make the fills for thevarious stages.”Dykeman said planning for the project

began a year and a half prior to last June’sElephant Lands groundbreaking, with thebuilding of a service road that ran alongsideseveral animal areas, including lions, chee-tahs and African wild dogs. “We are working in close proximity to a

number of animal habitats, so good commu-nication with the zoo’s curators and keepersis critical,” Dykeman said. “We let themknow in advance when we’ll be in a certainarea and what we’ll be doing there. If theythink there is going to be an impact, they’llmove an animal out of the area. They do areally good job of monitoring the animalsand letting us know if we need to minimizeour activities or restrict them to certaintimes.”So far, an average of 55 construction per-

sonnel have been on site daily; that numberwill grow to between 110 and 130 whenconstruction of the new buildings peaks. Many subcontractors will be working on theproject, including R&R General Contractorsfor track and rail construction, L&MFabrication and Carr Construction forStructural Steel and Caging work, TurnstoneConstruction for scenic rockwork and shot-crete, Nugent Masonry for Masonry, ArtCortez for metal framing and drywall sys-tems, Greenman Construction forDoors/Frames/Hardware, Cherry CityElectric for electrical system, JH Kelly forlife support systems, and Heinz Mechanicalfor plumbing and mechanical. Elephant Lands is expected to be com-plete by the fall of 2015, while the over-all work at the zoo should be completeby 2019.

The project reached a big milestone inFebruary as crews completed work onwhat’s now known as the EncounterHabitat — a sandy field in the southernportion of the site, which the zoo’s ele-phant family is now enjoying daily.

It is fitting that the Oregon Zoo’s (inPortland) eight Asian elephants areamong the many watching constructionof Elephant Lands, a $57 million projectthat will quadruple their habitat from1.5 to more than 6 acres.

From the beginning, zoo officials havesaid that everyone working on thisproject has been aiming to look at itthrough the elephants’ eyes.

RX30, RX38 Breakers Feature Innovative TechnologyPractical for heavy industrial demolition, building renova-

tion, road construction, rock excavation, trenching, mine andquarry applications, the RX30 and RX38 are powerfulenough to handle the most difficult applications, but also canbe transported with ease.“We have really engineered the perfect balance between

power and technology with these models,” explained GregPetherbridge, product manager of hydraulic attachments ofChicago Pneumatic. “Contractors will be able to increaseproductivity on the job site thanks to these advanced tech-nology breakers,” he added. As is the case with all breakers in the RX series, the RX30

and RX38 feature innovative hybrid gas / oil technology, andfewer moving parts for a lower maintenance hydraulicbreaker. Also incorporated in the RX line of rig mountedhydraulic breakers are noise and vibration dampening tech-

nology and a highly efficientinternal control valvemaking the RX break-ers some of the quietest

and most powerful on themarket today, according tothe manufacturer. “There are a number of

extra features on the RX30and RX38 breakers, whichmake this an importantmachine for contractors,”said Petherbridge. “Forexample, the PowerControlPlus feature enables the oper-ator to adjust the breaker’s per-formance according to theapplication.” Other features include a tie

rod system that uses tie bolts,an insert thread system thatensures a long working life andallows tie bolts to be reused, aswell as a central lubricationport for extended bushing life.

About the RX30Featuring a service weight of 4,850 lb. (2,200 kg), the

RX30 is ideal for a wide range of applications. With animpact rate of up to 620 blows per minute (bpm) at 5,500ft. lb. class, the RX30 delivers dependable power and per-formance for demolition, construction, and mining. TheRX30 is specified for carriers with a capacity of 55,100 to88,200 lbs. (Carrier Class 25 to 40 metric tons).

About The RX38The RX38 boasts an impact rate of 590 bpm at 6,500 ft.

lb. class to effectively increase job site productivity. Witha service weight of 5,740 lbs. (2,600 kg), the RX38 is

strong enough to handle the roughest applications.Specified for carriers with a capacity of 59,000 to 98,000lbs. (Carrier Class 25 to 43 metric tons). Optional equipment is available for breakers in the

The Case for Manual Quick CouplersWhen given the choice, the majority

of operators would pick hydraulicquick couplers over manual —right? But manual quick couplerscan provide significant benefits tooperators and owners.

• CostManual quick couplers cost signifi-

cantly less than hydraulic couplers. When you look at the cost of plumbing, safety valves, and electronic controls associated withhydraulic quick couplers, manual couplers can cost 30 to50 percent less to install.

• Simple DesignBecause the design is less complicated, manual

mechanical couplers are less prone to jamming and break-ing down. This, in turn, saves money for the machineowner.

• Health and SafetyWith a manual quick coupler, the operator must always

get out of the cab and secure the attachment manually andvisually secure it before climbing back into the machine. This means there is a smaller chance for operator error. Italso provides an opportunity for an operator to move outof the seat, which lessens the chance for health-relatedissues from staying in a seated position for too long.

• SpeedWhile a hydraulic coupler is quicker to change attach-

ments on a machine, some manual options such as a multi-grab screw coupler only takes about five minutes.Users will save a few minutes with a hydraulic coupler,

but the other benefits such as cost and safety make manu-al couplers favorable for machine owners and operators.

TRK Attachments Multi-Grab Manual Screw

CouplerA multi-grab screw coupler is a

type of manual coupler that differsfrom conventional couplers because the operator can pickup attachments with different pin centers and it onlyrequires one person to operate. To change an attachment using a multi-grab screw cou-

pler, the operator only needs a ratchet with a 1-1/8 in. sock-et. The grabber is driven back and forth by the screwmechanism using the ratchet and socket. This systemenables the coupler to cinch up tightly to the pins evenwhen there is wear in the pins or coupler. An easy-lockplate is then placed over the top of the screw head andsecured with the 1-1/8 in. socket. At the front of the coupler there is a secondary lock sys-

tem. This system prevents the attachment from coming offdue to operator error or the unlikely event of failure of thescrew mechanism. While there are many instances where hydraulic quick

couplers are advantageous, there is still a case for manualquick couplers, particularly when it comes to cost, produc-tivity, and safety. For more information, call 905/641-9981 or visit

Atlas Copco Secoroc’s PrimO pilot bit employs enhancedfeatures to increase the bearing and cutting structure life ofthe current pilot bit design.

The PrimO pilot bit features a contoured shirttail to reduceheat on the seal area and carbide inserts on the shirttail toincrease the life of the shirttail and seals. The PrimO alsoemploys a dual seal arrangement that includes a primary sealand an excluder for longer seal life. Longer seal life inadverse conditions means longer running hours in the pilothole and longer holes.

In addition, the PrimO design incorpo-rates the use of extremely hard carbide onthe cone gage bevels coupled withenhanced carbide on the gage of the bit toreduce wear and improve gage life.Improved gage life means longer pilotholes with fewer trips for the customerand overall faster penetration rate as theinsert retains shape longer.

The PrimO pilot bit also utilizes pro-prietary synthetic lubricants for higherloads, longer bearing life and increased RPM.

The combined features of the PrimO bit have shown per-formance in a field test 30 percent higher than the standardproduct in hard, difficult ground conditions, according to themanufacturer.

J&L Oilfield Uses D65EX-17, D51EX-22 for Leveling, Rippingtively without having a terrific staffthat’s as dedicated to J&L’s successas we are. We have high expecta-tions, but our employees consis-tently meet them. Our aim hasalways been to find the best peopleand take care of them. They areJ&L’s greatest assets. We havevery little turnover, so our plan isworking. ”

Reliable KomatsuEquipment

Schultz and Swanson also thinkhighly of Komatsu equipment, which J&L Oilfield Services beganusing about eight years ago. Itstarted with a WA320-5 wheelloader, which the company stillowns. Working with Kirby-SmithMachinery Inc. Territory ManagerDean Traylor, J&L acquired addi-tional loaders, mainly WA320s andWA380s, two excavators(PC210LC-10 and PC200) andrecently a D65EX-17 dozer.“We bought our first Komatsu

loader in 2006, and now it hasabout 6,000 hours on it,” said

Schultz. “Other than routine serv-ice, nothing has been done to it.Based on the production and mini-mal downtime from that machine,we added more Komatsu equip-ment, and we have been just aspleased as we were with our firstpurchase.”Wheel loaders and excavators

are used to load cuttings ontotrucks. Loaders also are used toblend mixing agents with oil-basedcuttings. J&L Oilfield Servicesuses the D65EX-17 to rip materialsthat are used in the mixing processand also uses it to level during landapplication.“Komatsu equipment is durable,

and that’s a big plus because ourapplications can be very tough onmachinery,” said Schultz. “It’s rarethat we have an issue, but if we do,I know I can call Kirby-Smith, andthey’ll take care of it right away, either out of their Oklahoma Cityor Amarillo branch. With the newTier IV machines, Kirby-Smithhandles the routine servicesthrough Komatsu CARE, which isan added bonus that saves us interms of owning and operatingcosts. They call us to let us knowit’s time for a service and schedulethe work at our convenience.Service like that only strengthensthe already great relationship wehave with Dean, Kirby-Smith andKomatsu.”

Expanding Opportunities

J&L Oilfield Services continuesto look for new avenues to expandand streamline its processes. Its ini-tiatives for 2014 include fully inte-grating E-tickets and further imple-mentation of ECO1.“We have plans to grow our rig

counts, which in turn will furtherour need for more people andmachinery,” said Swanson. “I cansee us expanding our territory aswell, moving into more states, andECO1 taking an increasingly larg-er role in our operations. Our goalis to move into new markets, suchas spill remediation, land applica-tions in municipalities and otherareas.”“We’ll approach everything we

do in the same way we alwayshave – in a safe and professionalmanner,” added Schultz. “At theend of last year, we completednearly 4,000 jobs with zero cita-tions, and we expect that to contin-ue to be the case. We’re deter-mined to maintain a high standardof excellence for ourselves and forJ&L as a company.”

New Jersey-based Allu GroupInc.’s Mining Series is an (M-Series) all-in-one screener crusherattachment for mining and aggre-gate. The M-Series processes awide variety of mined materials, including coal, oil shale, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, phosphate, saltand other soft rock and attach toboth wheel loaders and excavators. With the extraction of resourcesfrom the ground becoming evermore expensive and complex,Allu’s processing bucket convertsa wheel loader or excavator into ahigh-capacity mobile pre-crushingand screening solution, which canplace material either into stock-piles or directly into trucks. Itreduces both capital investmentand operating costs for the mineowner, while also significantlyreducing equipment wear life, productiontime and operating costs. Pre-crushing,screening and loading are achieved in oneinitial step with a processor that can easily betransported around a site on a loader and/orexcavator. These attachments can be utilizedin both open-pit and underground miningapplications without the need for the hugecapital costs associated with a stationarycrushing and screening plant. The ALLU M-

Series attachment allows the processingmachine to be brought to the material andnot the material to the machine. Purpose-built to match the mining indus-

try’s need to aggressively engage the materi-als bank, the M-Series screener crusherbuckets are strategically positioned out infront of the carrier. A typical bucket of mate-rial can be crushed and processed in less than60 seconds, providing a processing capacity

of up to 650 tons (590 t) per hour. There aresix M-Series models, each with the ability toproduce three to four different fragmentsizes and fit wheel loaders from 30 to 90 tons(27 to 81.6 t) as well as excavators from 50to 160 tons (45 to 145 t). The rear-mounteddrum and bearing design uses three or fourrotating crushing drums that are powered bya hydraulic motor. The hydraulically-operated hinged mount

plate on the wheel loader models, allows an M-Series screenercrusher attachment to also beused as a loading bucket, aboveand below ground, with normalload-and-carry characteristics, including maximum breakoutforce. When processing materialto produce different finishedproduct sizes, typically in the 4+in. (10 cm) range, the M-Seriesscreener crusher mount plateposition directs material flowprotecting the carrier from straymaterial.Installation of the M-Series

screener crusher includes a wiredcontrol panel located inside theoperator’s cab of the carriermachine. This monitors key datato the screener crusher’s perform-ance, including hydraulics, tem-

perature and bucket angle, as well as provid-ing a link for real-time ALLU after-salesservice. As with standard buckets, the M-Series screener crusher is designed withchangeable wear parts. For more information, call 800/939-2558

The FTX290 features the Fecon BH120forestry mulcher with variable speed motorsand three optional rotor systems includingFecon’s new depth controls rotor (DCR)technology.

Fecon DCR rotors feature the reversiblesamurai knife. The samurai is incorporatedinto a depth control design that provides fastcutting in all materials and the most efficientuse of horsepower. The cutting, slicing andsplitting action of the samurai knife as itchips is far more productive than straightedge tools or saw teeth. This productivity isfurther enhanced by the Fecon DCR, depthcontrol rings providing fast cutting durabili-ty, according to the manufacturer. The

FTX290 mid-sized crawler with the BH120DCR forestry mulcher is the right combina-tion of power, durability size and productioncapability for the larger jobs in R.O.W.,urban interface and land improvement ordevelopment.

Integrity. Generation After Generation. After being in business for almost a century, we’ve learned a thing or two. We know what it takes to keep your operation running smoothly: Commitment from your crew, quality equipment that works as hard as you do, and people that you can count on. Generation after generation, we continue to meet the demands ofthe job by building innovative products. We’ve led the way since 1928, and that leadership shows through in the integrity of our team. We’re proud to still be doing business the way we did back then.

Talbert Introduces Ultra-Low, 18-Inch Deck HeightThe 55-ton (50 t) spread-axle, low-deck

trailer (55SA-LD) from TalbertManufacturing features an 18-in. (46 cm)deck height and an E1Nitro so it can runwith three axles, four axles close-coupled oras a 3+1 spread-axle. The trailer is an opti-mal solution for haulers who need the flexi-bility of a low deck height and the flexibilityto run a variety of configurations, accordingto the manufacturer.

The 55SA-LD is an East Coast trailerwhose height is 2 in. (5 cm) lower thanTalbert’s standard 55SA unit. The extra 2 in.provides an advantage for haulers who needto haul heavy and oversized equipmentunder bridges or through tunnels with lowclearance rather than making trips around. Inaddition, the lower deck height equates toadditional load opportunities.

The standard Talbert 55SA-LD features anon-ground bearing hydraulic gooseneckdesign with a 108-in. (274 cm) swing radius. The trailer’s 24-in. (61 cm) flip gooseneckextension results in a 132-in. (355 cm) swingradius that allows haulers to transfer addi-tional load from the drive axles to the steeraxle of their tractors. The E1Nitro alsoallows companies to expand their serviceregions into states that require the fourth axleto be at least 14 ft. 1 in. (4.3 m) from the third

axle. The E1Nitro makes the 14-ft. 1-in. spread

between the third and fourth axles possible. The system articulates left and right and usesnitrogen to equalize the up and down move-ment to provide proportionate weight distri-bution in each axle grouping. Through acombination of hydraulic and nitrogenequalization, the E1Nitro absorbs haulingand loading shocks, and provides a greaterrange of suspension movement for reducedstress and a smoother ride. The system also

acts as a hydraulic shim point between thetrailer and the spreader. It also incorporatestwo-speed dual landing gear for greater sta-bility when the E-Nitro is disconnected fromthe trailer.

The four-beam trailer is constructed with12-in. (30.5 cm), T-1 main beams and 2 in.of apitong decking. It also features 12-in.swinging, removable outriggers for widerloads and a 25-ft. 6-in. (7.7 m) cleared decklength (26 ft. [7.9 m] actual).

Talbert’s 55SA-LD trailer provides

haulers a range of hauling capacities andcapabilities. It has capacities of 55 tons in 10ft. (3 m) with four axles close-coupled, 55tons in half the deck length in a three-axle or3+1 spread-axle configuration, and 60 tons(54 t) in half the deck length with four axlesclose-coupled.

The 55-ton (50 t) spread-axle, low-deck trailer (55SA-LD) can run with three axles, four axles close-coupled or as a 3+1spread-axle.

that pays for highway and transit aid isforecast to go broke by late August.Revenue from gas taxes and othertransportation user fees that go into thefund haven’t kept pace with federal aidpromised to states. People are drivingless per capita and cars are more fuelefficient, keeping revenues fairly flat. But nation’s infrastructure is aging, cre-ating greater demand for new andrebuilt roads and bridges. At the sametime, the cost of construction hasincreased.“For too long, Congress has shied

by the senators as possible offsets forfuel tax increases are a research anddevelopment tax credit, certain expens-ing by small businesses, the state andlocal sales tax deduction, increasingemployer-provided transit benefits tothe same level as parking benefits, adeduction for spending by teachers onclassroom supplies, and an increaseddeduction for land conservation andeasement donations.

Hardhats for Highways ProgramSupports Fix for Trust Fund Construction employment totaled six mil-

lion in May, the highest total since June 2009and an increase of 188,000 or 3.2 percentfrom a year earlier, Simonson noted.Residential construction employers added3,300 jobs in May and 105,600 (4.9 percent)over 12 months. Nonresidential constructionfirms added 2,700 employees since Apriland 82,000 (2.2 percent) since May 2013.The unemployment rate for workers

actively looking for jobs and last employedin construction declined from 10.8 percent ayear earlier to 8.6 percent in May — the low-est May rate since 2008. Simonson notedthat the unemployment rate for constructionworkers had fallen by more than half sinceMay 2010, when it reached 20.1 percent.During that time, the number of unemployedworkers who last worked in constructiondeclined by more than one million, butindustry employment increased by only480,000.Association officials urged Congress and

the Obama administration to work togetherto find a way to keep the federal HighwayTrust Fund from running out of money, as

forecast, later this summer. They cautionedthat halting payments from the fund wouldforce many states to halt or cancel outrightbillions of dollars worth of highway projectsduring the middle of the busy constructionseason.“Forcing a sudden halt to thousands of

highway projects across the country willundermine much of the growth the construc-tion industry has recently experienced,” saidStephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chiefexecutive officer. “Such a shutdown wouldcost thousands of construction jobs and forcecommuters and shippers in many parts of thecountry to pay for the lost construction sea-son through pothole damages and shippingdelays.”Sandherr added that more than 8,000 con-

struction employees have already contactedCongressional delegations from 48 states tourge their support for a fix to the HighwayTrust Fund as part of the Hardhats forHighways program. That program is beingorganized by the TransportationConstruction Coalition

JOBS from page 1

Demolition to Occur in 2015Lease Crutcher and Goodfellow brief eachone on the special aspects of working in azoo environment.Concerning the equipment used for the

project, Kirsch said that on the civil side, it istraditional heavy civil equipment — a com-bination of excavators, trucks, bulldozers, and compactors to move and place the soil.Kirsch has a full-time mechanic and serv-

ice oiler on site to ensure that the equipmentis maintained, along with technical supportthat can be brought in and support from deal-ers.Dykeman added that few equipment

issues have cropped up.“We have a fairly new fleet of equip-

ment,” Kirsch said, “so it is generally pre-ventative maintenance as opposed to actualrepairs. We own the majority of our equip-ment and we have rented a few small andspecialized pieces for the project such asconveyor trucks and dewatering equipment. To help monitor the safety and operation

of the equipment on the job site, Goodfellowhas equipped every machine with the ZonarSystem. Zonar’s EVIR (Electronic VehicleInspection Report) verifies that daily visualsafety inspections are being performed by alloperators on every piece of equipment.“Every machine on the Elephant Lands

job site is equipped with Zonar’s RFID tagsinstalled in specific zones,” said Kirsh. “TheZonar 2010 handheld reads each zone tagvisited by the operator. It’s a step-by-stepinspection process, and if there are any need-ed repairs or maintenance issues that aredetected, they are noted and sent by text or e-mail from Zonar to the mechanics, and to ourmain office shop to either schedule therepairs or order parts to keep the equipmentup and running.”Utilizing Zonar has helped reduce break-

downs and lower repair and parts replace-ment costs. Goodfellow, has been usingZonar throughout its fleet since 2008 andKirsh said that makes it easy for the opera-tors to note any defects on their equipmentand that the mechanics rely upon Zonar forinstant notification of defects and planningthe needed repairs.Elephant Lands is expected to be com-

plete by the fall of 2015, while the overallwork at the zoo should be complete by 2019.“We’re bidding each job as they come up

and we basically have the schedule workedout so that as one project is complete, anoth-er begins,” said Mitchell. “The next projectwill be a new education center.”
