Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is agroup of conditions that may occur as aresult of a baby's exposure to certain drugsand substances while in the womb.

NAS is treatable, requiring an averagehospital stay of 17-23 days.

The treatment for NAS ranges from basicsoothing techniques to medication, suchas morphine or phenobarbitral.

While there is still much to learn about NAS,health professionals and advocates areworking to gain more insight into best carepractices for both the babies and theirmoms.

Please talk with your provider about the risksand symptoms of NAS.

The Outreach Specialist will reach outabout 1 month after birth to providean introduction to the program andoffer the opportunity to participate.

Once mom confirms participation, a 1time home visit will be scheduled withthe Outreach Specialist and Nurse at aplace and time that's most convenientfor her.

During the visit, we will provide harmreduction tips, naloxone training, andhelp connect mothers to services. Thenurse can check baby and answermost clinical and parenting questions.

NOTE: Participation in this programis completely voluntary; the mother

can opt out at any point.

Above & Beyond is a new outreachprogram created in December 2018by the Philadelphia Department ofPublic Health. The program is a service specificallyfor mothers of infants diagnosedwith NAS and their families, toprovide harm reduction trainingand linkage to a variety oftreatment and social services inPhiladelphia.
