Lenten Regulations This is the time of year when we may become a bit confused about the proper observances for the season

Good Friday are days of fast. Fasting is generally understood to be 1 meal without snacking during the day. Many people mitigate the observances with 2 small meals that do not equal the sum of the 3rd. All Catholics without medical problems are obliged to the law of fast, beginning at age 18 and continuing through age 59.

All Fridays of Lent and Good Friday, are days of abstinence. This law applies to all Catholics 14 years of age and older. No meat or visible meat products in other foods may be consumed, including wild game, fowl, lamb,

pork or beef. Soy, milk products, eggs, cheese, fish and shellfish are permitted

Moral Guidelines for Vaccine Use The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses abortion derived cell lines to make their vaccine therefore: 1. When a choice of vaccine is available, Catholics should use Pfizer or Moderna. 2. If no choice of vaccine is available then the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may be used due to the greater good of

preventing COVID-19. 3. Being vaccinated can be seen as an act of charity that serves the common good. 4. These guidelines com from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faithful and the US Conference of Bishops.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccine do not use an abortion derived cell line for their production unlike Johnson & Johnson.

FEAST OF FAITH Lent, a Season of the Word

Each year on the First Sunday of Lent we hear one of the Gospel accounts of the temptation of Jesus. In Luke’s account, the devil cites the scriptures repeatedly, urging Jesus to interpret them in a false, self-serving way—if God sends angels to protect those whom God loves (as it says in Psalm 91), then prove it! But Jesus resists this insidious temptation by turning to scripture passages that tell of right relationship with God—living by God’s word, trusting in God, and worshiping God alone. Jesus himself listened to the inspired word of God and let it shape and form him. Through the liturgy, we do the same. The readings we hear at Mass can teach us, but that is not their primary function. Rather, the scriptures are meant to reveal the Lord to us, to let us experience his presence, and to form us in our Christian identity. Christ’s presence is realized by his spoken word, “since it is he himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7). In the readings proclaimed at Mass, we hear the voice of Christ himself.

FIESTA DE LA FE La oración colecta

Reflection of the Week

Our readings today identify the most unlikely individuals for the most extraordinary tasks. These individuals are examples to us in our lives. In our First Reading, the Lord appoints Samuel to declare the next king of Israel. The Lord’s words to Samuel about who should become king cut right to the heart of what matters in God’s eyes, “man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart.” We often embrace the misconception that things like status and appearance are what carry importance in life. Yet, God clearly states that it is what is in our hearts that matters most. So how do we cultivate hearts worthy of God? It starts in prayer — giving God undivided attention each day. Through this time set aside for our Lord, He will work on our hearts so that they will become more like His. Our Gospel resounds what was proclaimed in our First Reading, “not as man sees does God see.” Jesus heals a blind man who people assumed was born blind as a punishment from sin. Yet, Jesus says, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.” Jesus often worked through the most vulnerable people to show His greatest works. Like the blind man, we must recognize our need for healing and give God the authority to work through us. During these final weeks of Lent, let us ponder God’s words, “not as man sees does God see.” May we become dependent on our Lord so that He might work through us and transform us.
