Kent MAN
• Discussions from 1999 onwards• Network soon established– Based on wireless
• Became a limited company on 15th April 2002• Moved to a fibre network in 2005• End of contract with JANET(UK) on 30th September
2011• Last one of 100 quadrillion (estimated) bytes
shipped across the Kentish MAN on 28th September• Became GOETEC on 29th September
Why rename
• The vision & mission of GOETEC is *very* different from Kent MAN– No operational responsibility for GOETEC– All about collaboration, representation and shared
services• We’re not a
network• We’re not
metropolitan• We’re not
exclusively Kent
Why “GOETEC”
• One of many suggestions• This was the most popular• It didn’t mean anything obscene in any
foreign language– Although in Swahili, it means “tripping
someone up tec”
Why the logo?
• Most popular of a small selection– Bold and professional
• The “swish” implies partnership / collaboration
• Environmental advantages from sharing services, hence the green

• Same company (just renamed)• Same Board• The Executive Committee goes– Replaced by a small management team
• Still not-for-profit

education and research in the region and nationally to JANET(UK), KPSN and other bodies

GOETEC Mission - Representation
• GOETEC represents tertiary education on the KPSN Management Board, as well as in more operational areas
• Andrew Ironside (CCCU) represents tertiary education on the KPSN Executive Board
• Some funding from JANET(UK) – recognise the value of representation
• KPSN is developing a number of services– GOETEC will ensure your needs are represented– More details of these services later

developments, such as the Public Sector Network and other regional strategies

promote collaborative working and the sharing of effective practice

services, including the role of a Local Internet Registry and a BT Openreach Communications Provider

• We worked hard to establish these functions
• Openreach gives us a flexible / inexpensive alternative to KPSN (if needed!)
• Local Internet Registry – valuable for commercial (non-JANET) address space allocation
GOETEC Mission VI• To work on behalf of
Members to facilitate the resolution of issues

• Not for day-to-day issues– Problems, not incidents (ITIL terminology)
• If you’re struggling to get something resolved, or if there’s a systemic problem
• Examples:– Working with JANET to investigate internet
“flakiness” during mid-September– Canterbury College outage

• New Category of “Associate Member”• Representative on the Board
– 1 representative per 5 Associate Members• Full access to all present and future
services• One day’s free consultancy (worth ~£400)• Cost from £100 - £1,000 per year
depending on the size of your institution– Based on JISC banding
