Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. Tweet From Pope Francis In the uncertainty that we feel both inside and out, the Lord gives us a certainty: He remem-bers us. 8/7

DID YOU KNOW? Keep an eye out during social events at school and church Now that your children are getting ready to head back to school, it’s a good time to re-familiarize yourself with the school or church property. Keep a special look-out for any rooms or areas where supervision is low, and where a predator could take a child without being no-ticed. During school events, these are the places to watch. You should also take note of any locked doors, areas under bleachers or in stairwells, or anywhere else suspicious. Child safety should be a priority for all events. Young Adult Ministry

Leaders from Confirmation/Youth Ministry and YAM mem-bers teamed up last weekend for a trail cleanup in Eaton Canyon. Together, they collect-ed enough trash to fill up their bags, protecting the local wild-

life and beautifying the space for all. In Pope Francis' en-cyclical “Laudato Si,” we are reminded to "care for our common home", the earth that God has blessed with life. Let us remember our responsibility to steward creation now and for the generations to come.

Young adults 18-39 are invited to join our Wednesday meetings, and all are welcome to subscribe to our news-letter.

Contact [email protected] for more information. or to be added to our newsletter.

Week of Priestly Renewal

As was previously announced, Archbishop Jose Gomez has convoked a mandatory gathering for all of the priests who belong to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to chal-lenge us to a deeper renewal of our priestly service. This Convocation is scheduled for this week, August 26-29. Approximately 350 priests will assemble with the Arch-bishop for prayer and fellowship, input from a number of speakers, and discussions with one another. Please keep us in your prayer during these days.

Mission Cooperative Collection August 24-25

Thomas and Margaret Liautaud will be speaking at all the Masses on August 24-25 on behalf of Mis-

sion Doctors Association as part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Mission Cooperative Plan.

A mission of healing and partnership of hope, Mission Doctors Association invites us to keep all the Mission Doctors in our prayers. Please consider supporting gen-erously the lifesaving work of the Mission Doctors. www.missiondoctors.org

Ministry Corner

The Intercessory Prayer Ministry The Intercessory Prayer Ministry originally began as the St. Faustina & St. Francis Prayer Group in 2004. It was the brainchild of the late Tom Mahoney and Sylvia Green, both medical professionals. Their concern was that many of the critically ill patients in their care did not always have prompt access to a priest for Anointing of the Sick. Although local priests would always do their best to ac-commodate the sick and dying, it became apparent that more vocations to the Priesthood were critical. The main prayer focus of the group became “an increase of holy men to the Priesthood.” Prayers have been answered, as we have witnessed three good men ordained since 2004. Fr. Leo Ortega, Fr. Larry Revilla and Fr. Gilbert Guzman who each celebrated their first Mass at Assumption.

We continue to pray for vocations to the Priesthood, Dea-conate and Religious Orders. On October 13, 2017 our very own Rose Princess, Zena Brown, entered the Clois-tered Carmelite Order in Alhambra and has been named Sr. Faustina Mary of the Holy Eucharist. We are so blessed! We also pray for those on Assumption’s prayer list.

We are still going strong after fifteen years, our Interces-sors have increased in number but we can always use a few more Prayer Warriors. We are open to all prayer re-quests BIG or small. We continue to meet in the Church on most Mondays throughout the year at 7 p.m. Please come and join us as we gather in Jesus name.

Matt. 18:19-20 “If two of you agree on earth about any-thing they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

FOLLOW ME: MEETING JESUS IN THE

GOSPEL OF JOHN.

Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing

what God asks of us. Jesus wants us to be more than just a believer—He wants each of us to be His disciple and friend. To help you answer this call to a deeper rela-tionship with Christ, Assumption Parish will be offering an 8-week Bible Study course, Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John. Each class session will include a vid-eo presentation by Edward Sri, as well as prayer and dis-cussion. Participants are also asked to do some home preparation and bring a Bible to each session.

School News

Welcome Back!

This week, Assump-tion School opens its doors for its 67th year! Back in 1952, 168 stu-dents began the school year in grades 1-4. Many things have changed since the 50’s, but one thing has remained constant: the commitment of Assumption School to provide a “nurturing

environment, rooted in Gospel values and Catholic tradi-tions, where each child is recognized, respected, and cherished as a child of God.”

Maintenance & Repairs Report – Month of July 2019 Those green envelopes…

The green envelopes found in your monthly envelope packet and in our pews are restricted for use towards our Church Maintenance & Repairs. Amounts collected from the “green envelopes” remain 100% in our parish and are not subject to an Archdiocese assessment fee. These funds go directly toward paying for our church facility up-keep, maintenance and improvements, and the utilities bills.

We had 15 less families participating this month versus June 2019. There were 5 Sundays in June 2019. Please consider donating to this much needed fund.

Here is a look at the month of July 2019 “green enve-lope” collections versus our actual maintenance & repairs expenditures:

Funds collected from green envelopes $ 9,641 Repairs, routine maintenance, utility expenses $16,065 Shortfall for the month $ (6,424) Families Participating (green envelopes or indicated on check) 274

In July, there were major repairs to the water pipes in the Community Center. You may contribute anytime during the month by either using the green envelope found in your packet or in the pew or simply indicate on the memo line of your check, “Maintenance & Repairs.”

Thank you so very much for your continuing generosity!

God is doing something New in Us: Ex-ploring paths of deepening Faith “Remember not the events of the past. The things of long ago consider not. See, I am

doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” Isaiah 43:18-19

What a bold proclamation, this prophecy of Isaiah. Yet, it is true. God is doing a new thing in each of our lives. The challenge is to be open, ready to listen, ready to sur-render to God’s love, God’s Spirit at work within us.

Register for Next Year

Our programs, which take place on Sundays, are de-

signed for children in their Pre-School to Teen years, including one for Special Needs children. As parents are the primary educators of their children, our pro-grams seek to engage the family in faith sharing and faith building. From October-April we sponsor a month-ly Sunday Family Mass as well as regularly held parent sessions to assist parents in their responsibility to fos-ter their children’s faith and spiritual development.

Registration packets for the next school year are available. Packets are available in the Faith Formation office and the Rectory.

"I Am A Man"

Amongst the squalor of homelessness and its misery, we search for and affirm human

dignity in the friends-in-need we meet and serve. Con-stantly reminded of their need for acceptance, we hear their calls to be seen.

Thinking about our Homeless Caravan, I am reminded of a time when the call for dignity reached a fever pitch: Memphis, 1968. Ehcol Cole and Robert Walker were two sanitation workers killed by a faulty trash compactor where they had taken shelter during a storm. All these workers faced hazardous conditions, low pay, unpaid overtime and constant harassment from a police force predominantly comprised of Klansmen enforcing "Jim Crow." When Ehcol and Robert lost their lives, city gov-ernment barely took notice. Outrage boiled over, and blacks took to the streets of Memphis with signs that read, "I Am A Man."

Like the "Trumpets of Jericho" blaring… this was the thunderous call that brought Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis where he gave his last speech, "I've Been To The Mountaintop." This speech was about the Sanita-tion Workers Strike and the lack of dignity each worker lived with. More than a speech, "I've Been To The Moun-taintop" was a proclamation… a VOICE of DIGNITY for every child of God carried across the nation. The follow-ing day, on April 4th, King was assassinated.

A few weeks ago, we shared with you the news of Mr. Thomas V. Jaspers IV, the homeless man who died in a crawlspace under the 210 freeway on Michillinda Avenue, Thomas was 35. We learned his family is in Pennsylva-nia, and that he had a wife, Ashley, and a son, Thomas. Aside from these facts, we know little more but we can imagine how Thomas lived based on our experience with other homeless people.

Urban nomad? Mentally ill? Dual diagnosed? Some of these descriptions may fit… perhaps all of them. We should try to imagine a time when he was younger, sur-rounded by the cheering voices of children… he was young then, and life was good. Perhaps he was a respon-sible husband and a loving father, and he would eat Ash-ley's blueberry pie and pitch fast ball to his boy?

What we do know is that on July 16th, under the 210 freeway, in the shadows of his loneliness, Thomas opened his eyes and saw the face of God.

We'd like to offer a dedication to Thomas from writer Leonard B. Meyer: "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man.' "

Rest assured Thomas, we all hear your "voice of dignity."

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? KNOW SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BE?

NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO RECEIVE YOUR FIRST COMMUNION OR MAKE YOUR CONFIRMATION? IT’S NOT TOO LATE!

Consider joining or recommending the program called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). RCIA ses-sions will resume in September. They meet on Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM-9:00 PM. For more information or to schedule an interview, please contact Sr. Susan Slater at: [email protected]. (626)792-1343 x508

ARE YOU WILLING TO SHARE YOUR FAITH?

THE RCIA TEAM NEEDS YOU!

We need volunteers to help our Catechumens (those preparing to be baptized) to “break open” the

scripture readings on Sundays. After the homily, it is cus-tomary for the Catechumens to “be dismissed,” to leave Mass and continue to reflect on the Word of God and how it applies to their lives. Currently we do not have enough RCIA Team members to conduct Dismissal.

If you are interested in serving in this faith-enriching ministry, please contact Sr. Susan: at [email protected]; (626)792-1343 x508

Training will be provided.
