Dear Parents,

I spent some of the week in London attending a MIST (Methodist Independent Schools’ Trust) strategy planning meeting looking to create a 25 year development plan. In turbulent times we are lucky to be in such a group which puts education first and which has the strength to provide investment and a buffer to all of its schools from the challenges facing the UK today. The most interesting discussion looked at how we will increasingly use artificial intelligence to offer personalised learning. Some of the packages available already offer amazing opportunities.

The co-curricular life of the school is very much back in full swing now and we have many fixtures against another MIST schools, such as Queen’s Taunton tomorrow. Our new hockey coach, Andy Egford has already made a very favourable impression on his charges so I am looking forward to watching the girls play tomorrow. Our senior rugby teams are off to Taunton for a mini-tournament which will mean that everyone has a game under their belts by next week.

This week we have met potential Dance and LAMDA teachers who were are hopeful will be able to replace Mrs James. As soon as we make an appointment we will let you know. Mr Pomroy has started singing auditions for this year’s production, so give your child a push if you think they have some untapped potential.

Finally, we have some important fundraising events next week. Our Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 28th - always popular in a school where cake matters - and the Wine and Wisdom on Saturday night (29th) which looks to be very popular. Hopefully see you there.

A number of our pupils are taking part a new initiative, the BBC Student Critics Award, encouraging literary criticism.

We were delighted to learn that two pupils, Alex (Lower Sixth Form) and Mikey (Fourth Form) both won medals last weekend representing Bideford & District Sea Cadets in a swimming gala held at HMS Raleigh. Alex won a gold medal and Mikey won silver and bronze. Their cadet group won over all.

Operation Christmas ChildChristmas! There I’ve mentioned it already. But what about Boxing Day? Many of us know it was a tradition where employers distributed gift boxes full of money, food and clothes to their employees. In the past Shebbear has carried this idea on by donating Christmas ‘shoe boxes’ to children less fortunate than our own.

This year I would love us to partner with Operation Christmas Child, an international relief and development organisation that works through local churches to demonstrate to those in need the real meaning of Christmas. Giving a child a box of items such as pencils, a toothbrush, solar calculator, toy car or the ubiquitous cuddly toy brings so much joy to people who have often struggled their entire life for things we take for granted.

So get searching for those shoe boxes we discarded last month and
