MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

BECOMING ‘CYBER SMART’

The beginning of the 21st Century has seen us gain many benefits from the ‘E-World’ (the world of electronic communications) and the ‘I- World’ (the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and the iCloud etc.). Today, we can have conversations with friends, family and colleagues from any place and any time. The Internet, mobile phone, Facebook, etc. have significantly changed how we communicate with each other. Unfortunately, this new world of communication has also brought some new issues as some people use the new technologies inappropriately.

To assist students and their families to gain awareness of, and strategies for, ‘Cyber Safety’ and dealing with ‘Cyber Bullying’, the College’s Pastoral Care focus for Term 2 is ‘Cyber Awareness’.

During Term 2, all students will be involved in a number of workshops relating to ‘Cyber Awareness’. These workshops will be using information and resources developed by Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Staff training will be undertaken with all members of the teaching staff completing the Connect-ed Course, through Cyber Smart website, during our Professional Development Meetings this term and Professional Development Week. The College has also invited Constable Derek Rivers (our Police School Liaison Officer) to do a number of presentations with our Senior School students and at a Parent Information Evening that we are planning to hold later this term.

The area of ‘Cyber Safety’ and ‘Cyber Bullying’ are two of the major issues facing our young people and I encourage all in the College community to be involved in our ‘Cyber Awareness’ activities.

COLLEGE EVENTS

I thank the Parents and Friends Association who continue to plan many events which make a huge contribution to the development of a sense of community at Broughton.

May I encourage parents to continue to support the P & F in these events leading up to Mother’s Day next week? Could I ask that we all set aside and put the date of the 2012 Spring Fair into our calendar so that we can keep this day of fun free.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACTIVITES

Well done Years 7 and 9 – NAPLAN Equating Test

On Wednesday, students in Years 7 and 9 sat for the NAPLAN Equating Test in Numeracy coordinated by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Students' performances from these tests, undertaken by a selected sample of schools, are used by ACARA to fine tune the NAPLAN to be held later this month.

The external supervisors have asked me to pass on their impressions of our students and their thanks. Both assessors were extremely impressed with the welcome, manners, co-operation and engagement of our students, with one commenting “I have been involved in this testing for nearly three years, visiting many schools and your students are the best I have come across. You must be very proud of them”.

Well done Years 7 and 9! All the students of Broughton always make us proud.

Rachel Veld - Figure Skating

Rachel Veld (5G) will be travelling to Prague next month to attend a Figure Skating Development Camp. Rachel will be training with European coaches in areas such as sports fitness, sports science, injury prevention and other skating proficiencies. We wish Rachel all the best as she travels and undertakes this amazing opportunity.

Katherine Watson – UNSW Indigenous Winter School

Congratulations to Katherine Watson (Year 12) for her success in gaining a position in the 2012 Nura Gill Indigenous Winter School to be held at the University of NSW during the July vacation. Katherine has been accepted in the Medicine Program, which will give her an opportunity to examine the wide range of opportunities available to a young lady with her ability.

Joel Sanderson – School Based Apprenticeship

Throughout Year 11 and 12, Joel Sanderson has been undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship as an Apprentice Carpenter with Worthington & Soutar as part of his Higher School Certificate program of study. Students choosing the pathway to do a School Based Apprenticeship spend at least one day a week in the workplace and undertake a TAFE course whilst completing their HSC.

At the end of this year, Joel will complete his first year as an Apprentice Carpenter, gain his Higher School Certificate and be eligible for an ATAR.

Olivia Tebb - School Based Apprenticeship

Olivia Tebb has also been undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship and completes her first year as an apprentice in Beauty Therapy and will gain her Higher School Certificate by the end of 2012. Olivia is currently employed at Macarthur Square at Nectar Day Spa.

The College congratulates Olivia on her success in this program, and on being awarded South Western Sydney School-Based Apprentice of the Year for Beauty Therapy. This is a prestigious award and has been accompanied by hard work, dedication and a mature outlook to her studies and with enthusiasm and enjoyment at her workplace. At the time of writing this article, Olivia is preparing for the State School Based Apprentice of the Year and we all wish her well in her

preparation for this award.

STAFF PROFILE

Mrs Louise Ferris – Science, Duke of Edinburgh

I teach Science in the Senior School. Growing up I was not encouraged to pursue my deep interest in teaching, and so I enrolled in Veterinary Science, moving from Cheltenham to Camden to get married and complete my degree in 1980. I worked in the Macarthur area as a veterinary surgeon while raising my own family of 2 children, both of whom have gone on to be involved academically in “the sciences”. I eventually fulfilled my ambition and moved to teaching in 2004. The only part of veterinary practice I miss now is the puppies and kittens. They’re SO cute!

My experience with horses has made it possible for me to manage the Interschool Equestrian Team. There are three or four competitions each year and they are a lot of fun for our horse-

riding students, from Kindergarten to Year 12. It is a great way for them to represent the College in their particular area of interest.

I have a personal passion for helping students learn how the world works. I am also passionate about music, the environment, (so I run a Streamwatch Program in the Senior School) and about student welfare. I learned singing as a teenager but was too nervous to progress from 8th grade to complete my A.Mus. Continuing with lessons now

is just for fun, but theory examinations remind me how our students feel when they are assessed. A bonus! I also get to use my music knowledge when helping with the Senior Choir.

I love coordinating the Duke of Edinburgh Program and this increases my opportunities to get to know the needs and interests of the children on many levels, as well as supporting their determination to complete each stage of the program.

Since commencing in teaching, I have completed postgraduate studies in Gifted Education. I believe that every child should be encouraged to enjoy the full range of their abilities, whatever their gifts may be.

Working at Broughton has been like “coming home” for me. A relationship with God underpins everything we do. The staff are like family, and I love every child I teach. Our students are the citizens and leaders of our future and I pray they will all learn what it is to be wise men and women who have a close, guiding relationship with God.

Mr Aaron Dunne – Junior School

I teach Year 6. Alongside this, I am responsible for organising the Junior School's Carnivals, NASSA Gala Days, and the Junior School's representation by students at the NASSA, NSWCIS, NSWPSSA and SSA (National) levels. I have a Bachelor of Education Primary (Honours).

I have spent my entire life growing up in Southwestern Sydney. I was born in nearby Camden Hospital, and spent my school years living in Ingleburn. As a result, I have always followed the mighty West Tigers, although in my day I knew them as the Magpies. I attended Sackville St Primary School in Ingleburn, followed by East Hills Boys Technology High for Years 7 through to 10, and finally finished my senior years of schooling at Hurlstone Agricultural High School. Despite my love of sport, I always needed to work hard at it, as it did not come as easily to me

as academics did. I studied teaching at the University of Sydney and after graduating in 2006, I was fortunate enough to be employed and have spent six years teaching at Broughton

Growing up, I always assumed that I was a Christian. It wasn't until Year 9, however, that I realised that if I was a part of God's family I needed to learn more about Him and spend time with my brothers and sisters in Christ. As a result, I began attending Youth Group, and eventually Church, at St Barnabas Ingleburn. It was at about this time that my association with Broughton began, as my Youth Leader, Mr Roger Fitzhardinge, was then a teacher in the Junior School. Following that, my church gained a Youth Minister, Mr Hayden Smith, who was also employed by the College part time. Looking back, I see how God used the College in magnificent ways to help teach young people, including myself, about Jesus.

The years I spent going to Youth Group, as well as various Christian camps and conferences were some of the most enjoyable and valuable learning experiences of my life. Due to these great times, I went on to spend a further 5 years involved in leading my Youth Group, as well as various other camps like Cricket Camp, Kyckstart and MMM at Katoomba.

I'll never forget that first year of teaching. Merely five weeks into my new job, we returned from IPSSO Sport to find rain pouring all over the school, and the car park beginning to flood! They certainly did not cover emergency flood procedures during my University course! Thankfully God was watching over us all on that fateful day.

Six years on and I can gladly say that one of the things I love most about our College are the people in it. It really is a privilege to work with such wonderful men and woman, throughout all areas of the school, as well as such helpful parents and friendly students. God made us to be relational beings, and it is the relationships I have forged over my time at Broughton that continue to inspire me.

Above all, however, I love the fact that in my job, I get to not only teach people about our amazing world but also about Jesus, whether we are working, on the sporting field, or in the classroom.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

It has been a great start to the term, with many activities starting up again after the holiday period.

I dropped in on the ‘Splash’ Musical rehearsal this week. It was great to see the children and teachers having a lot of fun. Mrs Bartlett will be including updates in the newsletter each week so you can be kept informed. The Musical will be staged at the beginning of Term 3.

Today we had almost 60 children competing in the NASSA Cross Country event. It was a beautiful day and as always, our students represented the College well. On Wednesday, Grades 3-6 commenced their Winter IPPSO try-outs. These will continue next week. Congratulations to Chloe Bloom and Emily Achurch for representing NASSA and Broughton at the CIS Netball Gala Day yesterday.

It is great that our children have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities. Both our Infants and Primary choirs will be performing on Grandparents Day as well as our Junior School band. Our debaters have been busy preparing for their competitions with a debate held today against Tara Anglican School on the topic ‘desktop computers are better than iPads’. The adjudicator was Mr Bryant. My thanks to Miss Koeller for her work in preparing our students.

In amongst all of these activities, however, did you know that we have a knitting club?

KNITTING CLUB

Knitting club is now in its third year at Broughton. During this time we have had many wonderful volunteers helping us teach children how to knit, crochet and make pom poms. Any child from Year 1 and above is welcome to come to the function centre on Wednesdays at recess to participate in the club. We provide wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks for children to experiment with but these stay at school in a bag with their name on it. Some children bring their own knitting from home. We are always looking for new helpers and I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the wonderful helpers we have had over the years and thank you to the generous people who have donated wool and needles. It is greatly appreciated by all of us at knitting club.

RESPECT

We are continuing to focus on Respect each day at school. It has been great to be able to hand out tokens to students as they demonstrate respect at school.

You have remembered to show Respect in Assembly/Chapel by listening at all times and showing appreciation of others. Give this token to your teacher and they will sign your Achievement Chart.

PREPARATORY

Prep held their annual Teddy Bears Picnic this week and we all had a fabulous time! We played so many games with our teddies and especially enjoyed playing with a parachute. We had a yummy picnic out in the beautiful school grounds too! But our most favourite part was the bus ride all around the school- thank you Mr Charlie Dunn.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Grandparents Day will be held this term on Thursday, 24 May. Please return the details as outlined in last week’s newsletter as invitations need to be sent out. If you want your child to go home with a Grandparent early, then notification needs to be given to the Office before the day.

CURRICULUM SPOT

TEACHING CHILDREN TO READ AT BROUGHTON

Over the last 3 years Broughton has undertaken a different approach to reading, starting in Kindergarten. We have used the Getting Reading Right Scheme that focuses on synthetic phonics. This system stresses the importance of the Fab 5; comprehension, fluency, phonics knowledge, vocabulary and phonemic awareness.

Jo-Anne Dooner the co-founder of the Getting Reading Right system states that "We need strategies for teaching that respect the technical difficulties of reading and spelling in English. The fastest, most effective and most inclusive strategies avoid the unnecessary underperformance and failure of many of our children, and are based on systematic synthetic phonics."

She goes on to say that all principals, teachers and academics have ‘independently come to the same central conclusion that the early stages of teaching reading and spelling must include a synthetic phonics approach – often called systematic or explicit phonics in Australia. As the draft national English curriculum recognises, though, learning to read must take a balanced approach that encompasses phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.’

In her article in Learning Difficulties Australia Bulletin (Vol 43 No2 Dec 2011) She makes the point that ‘Exactly how best to teach reading and spelling is still not entirely agreed upon, partly because English spelling is pretty complicated. Another problem is that, while our brains are programmed to learn spoken language, they’re not hardwired to learn to read. We’re not born with a ‘reading’ gene, but our neural pathways have been able to ‘re-wire’ in such a way that allows reading to be learned. This is why we need strategies for teaching that respect the technical difficulties of reading and spelling in English. The fastest, most effective and most inclusive strategies avoid the unnecessary underperformance and failure of many of our children, and are based on systematic synthetic phonics.’

We are pleased here at Broughton that we have gone with this simple, scientifically proven approach to the way we teach children to read and spell.

SPORT

IPSSO

This week marked the official kick off of the 2012 Winter IPSSO season, with our Years 3-6 students, trialing for spots on our IPSSO teams. From all reports the standard of play was exceptional across the board and the coaches are confident that Broughton's Junior School will be able to build upon our growing reputation as one of the premier sporting schools in the Macarthur Region!

Trial will be continuing next week with final teams’ rosters to be decided on soon thereafter in anticipation of our Round One fixture against St. Peter's on the 16th May 2012. Thank you to all of our students who trialed this week and thank you to the parents and staff that support this process!

SPLASH REPORT

The performance of “Splash!’ is less than a term away. We have started to get excited. It is vital that all cast students are rehearsing their lines at home so that rehearsal time at school is spent on putting the parts together.

A reminder to parents, that the dates for the musical are Friday 27 July and Saturday 28 July (afternoon and evening). All students in Years 3 to 6 are required at all performances on these days. Students in Prep to Year 2 will be performing 3 songs at one of the performances only.

We are looking for help with props. Do you have a spare wine barrel at home (we need 2), deck chairs (we need 4), umbrellas (we need several – working and broken for an umbrella shop), a sailor captain’s hat (we need 1), umbrella/hat stands (we need 3) or old suitcases (we need 20)? If you have any of these items that we may borrow, could you please hand them into the Junior School Office or to Mrs Bartlett with your name on them so that they may be returned to you.

Students in Years 3-6 have the opportunity to design a poster which will be used for our musical. The posters need to be completed and handed to Mrs Malone by Monday 7 May. The pictures do not need to be too detailed as they have to be able to be used on T shirts as well.

CYBER AWARENESS PROGRAM IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL

It is a fact that more and more young people are immersing themselves in digital technologies. The use of the mobile phone for texting, iPhones, iPads and the internet in general has become the tools for communication. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, You tube and the like, have now become ‘the Voice’

Unfortunately accompanying this sociological trend is a growing number of young people, and even adults, who are participating in, or recipients of, ‘cyber bullying’.

Cyberbullying is never okay and young people need to know how to deal with situations of cyberbullying.

This week Broughton launches it’s Cyber Awareness Program, whereby the College will be engaging in a number of talks, activities, plays and information sessions to raise the awareness of the potential risks for children of using technology and how to help young people stay safe online.

This week the College staff engaged in online training of cybersafety through ‘Connect.ed’. This is a program that offers teachers the knowledge, confidence and resources to help students stay safe online.

The program which the students will be involved in will consist of a range of activities, predominately occurring in House Tutor and of which have been developed by the Pastoral Care Team. Years 7-11 will view various plays presented by ‘Brainstorm Productions’, covering cyberbullying and harassment. This will be an entertaining way to promote discussion and give students strategies to avoid being a bully or a target. Students will also view a number of DVD’s with follow up activities. Our police liaison officer, Constable Derek Rivers will also visit the

College and discuss both the dangers of cyberbullying and the laws and possible consequences which govern cyberbullying and harassment. It is our intention to host a parent information night in either Term 2 or 3. There will be regular updates in the newsletter of what is happening and how this program is developing.

PREFECTS CORNER

ERIN GARRETT

In the following weeks, students in the Senior School will be able to notice a change in their classrooms. Recycling bins will become the welcomed new addition to each classroom, in an attempt to encourage student awareness and understanding of the practicality of recycling. Following a weekly collection schedule, SRC members and Prefects will be working together to ensure the recycling scheme continues smoothly. As a plan initiated by the Prefect body, we hope the scheme proves successful and fits into school routine well.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

This week’s winner of writer of the week is Zia Khan of Year 12 with his creative piece reflecting on the revolutions happening throughout the world currently:

“Beams of daylight penetrated my sleep deprived eyes as the gentle throbbing in my head grew louder as I slowly approached the window. The moment the powder blue curtains were drawn apart, I was instantly greeted by a swarming, seething mass of bodies herded together in the city square. A sudden cold shudder of fear rippled through my veins, paralysing every emotion within my soul, juxtaposing the scorching, shifting and stretching sands of the great Sahara, simmering in the distance. Mass gatherings such as this were infrequent and had always been dealt with. Yet somehow this was different. The commune below looked ready to combust like an overheated engine, as the seemingly endless ocean of people forged a melting pot of tribes that had once bickered and scrapped amongst each other…”

OUT OF SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Alex Schifino of Year 9, who was selected to represent Australia as part of the Sydney Youth United FC, to play in a tournament of soccer in the Vodafone International Kusadasi Cup in Turkey during the April holidays.

It turned out to be a fantastic experience for Alex and the boys in his team. Here is a report from Mrs Schifino who accompanied Alex on the trip.

‘Before getting to Kusadasi, we stayed in Istanbul and ventured to Besitkas ground (Turkey's National Squad) and met Ersan Gulum. He is Australian born with Turkish parents and has played with the squad for a few years now and has been considered for our Socceroos Squad. He referred to Alex as the 'Italian Stallion' - we all had a great laugh. He encouraged the boys to never give up on their dream even when you get rejected over and over again - keep persisting.

The group consisted of teams from Fernebache', Aydinspor, Bronby FC, Istanbul Yildiz and Tennis Boroussia. Newcastle United's boys were in another group but we were able to chat to the boys when we crossed paths (don’t know what they tell the boys over there but they are all scared of the sharks in our waters and think we all have kangaroos as pets). We won 2 games out of 7 and were awarded with medals for "Best and Fairest" of the tournament. On the final day we played an Anzac Memorial Game with this being telecast live on Euro Sport in Turkey. I was asked to present a wreath and a souvenir boomerang to the Mayor before the Anzac Tribute was played’.
