Headmaster From the Headmaster Welcome back to a new School year. I hope that everyone had a wonderful break over Christmas, and like me, you are now looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that 2018 will bring for all of us. I especially welcome those of you who are new to our learning community, and hope that you all soon feel very much a part of Camberwell Grammar School. Welcome Back Evenings I extend a warm welcome to all of our families to one (or more!) of our Welcome Back Evenings, generously sponsored by our Parents’ Association. The Junior School Evening was a very convivial occasion last Monday evening, and the Middle School Welcome Back is being held tonight at 6.30pm in the Camberwell Room. The Senior School Evening will be held in the same venue next Friday 9 February. I am very grateful to Mrs Cathy Garrard, and the members of her Committee for arranging and hosting these evenings. We value greatly the support we receive from our Parent Support Groups, and I thank them for the warm welcome they extend to all families at the beginning of each year. Solar Panels Over the Christmas Break, a team from Gippsland Solar installed the first stage of a large-scale solar panel project at our school. We are covering the roof spaces of all of our major buildings with solar panels – which will eventually generate 862kw of energy – equivalent to about 200 home installations and meeting nearly 40% of the school’s electricity needs. Included in the system, are numerous educational applications for our students, and our Grade 5 classrooms will be able to operate completely ‘off-grid’. I am pleased that the initial impetus for this project came from our own students, who presented a compelling case to our Business Manager, who picked up the idea and worked hard to implement it. It is good to know that Camberwell Grammar School is doing its bit to reducing our impact on the environment. Professional Development Our entire staff participated in two days of Professional Development, on Wednesday 24 January and Thursday 25 January. Groups of teaching and non-teaching staff met to discuss issues including teaching and learning, pastoral care, staff development and support. These workshops provoked some stimulating discussion and have already provided very valuable feedback and ideas which will be extremely useful in developing our goals for 2018. Absence from School I also ask that parents contact the School if their son is to be absent for any reason. This is best done by a written note a few days before the absence to the Head of Junior School, or the Head of Middle School, or the Head of Senior School as appropriate. In the case of sudden illness, please contact our School Services Officer, Mr Michael Neal by 8.30am on 9835 1721 or email [email protected]. Students are not allowed to leave the School grounds without requesting permission from a senior member of staff. This permission generally is only granted if the consent of the parents has been given. If your son falls ill during the day, it is important that he reports to Sick Bay in the first instance. He should not call his parents directly to arrange pick up – our Health Coordinator will call you if your son is required to come home. In addition, and if at all possible, I would ask that medical or dental appointments be made outside of School hours. We encourage our students to see their class time as their first priority. Uniforms and Presentation At the beginning of each new School year, I ask for the support of our parents in ensuring that all students are properly attired, and that their hair is neat and tidy, and in keeping with the guidelines set out on pages 24 and 25 of our School Diary. I ask those few students who need to take some action about their hair, shoes, socks or belts, to do so as a matter of urgency. It may be that some boys are asked to return home until they are able to get an appropriate haircut. Heads of House will be the final arbiters of what is considered ‘appropriate’. Our students have an excellent reputation in the community for the way that they wear their uniform, and I am keen to ensure that we maintain this. Edition 1 2 February 2018

We received some clear feedback from our students (and some parents) about their dislike of long socks in Summer at the end of last year The boys feel the long socks are outdated and find them difficult to keep up For these reasons and after seeking advice from our Parent Uniform Shop (PLUS) and our uniform suppliers we have determined that this will be the last Summer that students are required to wear the long socks From the beginning of Term 4 we will move to short walking socks ndash more on this later in the yearI would also like to remind parents that it is important that the correct School Sports Uniform is worn when having a Physical Education lesson or competing in sporting events (pages 2627 in the School Diary) Our students represent us in the way they behave and also in the care they take with their appearance when they compete with students from other schools in sporting competitions and it is important that we give a very good impression

Food Allergies and Anaphylaxis Management Our School takes its responsibilities to students with food allergies and anaphylaxis very seriously We approach allergy and anaphylaxis in a proactive manner All our teaching staff and key support staff are trained in anaphylaxis management and this is updated each semester While we make every endeavour to make the School a safe environment for students with food allergies we do not claim to be a lsquonut freersquo School rather lsquonut awarersquo The food prepared in our Cafeteria does not contain nuts however there may be a risk of cross-contamination with food prepared offsiteThe vending machine in the Sports Centre however does have products that contain nuts so we urge parents of boys with food allergies to remind their son to read the packaging of these products before consumptionIf you would like further information on how we manage anaphylaxis and food allergies at School please feel free to contact our Coordinator of School Health ServicesStudent Health Coordinator on 9835 1777

Page 2: Contents Headmaster - cgs.vic.edu.au · From the Headmaster ... I am very grateful ... uniform, and I am keen to ensure that we maintain this. Contents Headmaster From the Headmaster

Middle SchoolStart of the YearWelcome back to all parents and students for the 2018 school year I trust that the holidays provided a good opportunity for some rest and relaxation and that you are all feeling healthy as we commence the new yearThe William Angliss Building came to life on Monday when our Middle School returned from holidays The cohort of over 128 boys arrived at Camberwell Grammar School for their first time in Camberwellrsquos 132 year old school uniform Whilst the material and design has changed the School motto (Spectemur Agendo) and all that it entails will help to shape our boys during their time hereI congratulate all of our new boys on the poise and maturity with which they approached the start of their Camberwell Grammar journey I trust that this is the start of a long and successful association with the School Our returning boys also made an impressive start and I thank the many boys who have so warmly welcomed those of us who are new to the School Your acts of kindness go a long way to strengthen our community I am looking forward to working with our Year 8 students as they become leaders in the Middle SchoolI have learnt very quickly that Camberwell is a very busy place with boundless opportunities to share learn and grow Those who are feeling a little overwhelmed in the early stages need to know that they are not alone and time will allow these emotions to settle

Junior School I have to tell you ndash it is great to be back in session If the enthusiasm of the boys and staff is anything to go by we are in for a splendid year Even the parents dropping their sons off on the first day seemed enthusiastic I enjoyed the opportunity to greet and meet boys and parents as they made their way into school and look forward to enjoying the year with you and your sonsI also extend a special welcome to all new boys and their families It wonrsquot be long before the boys feel settled and have a real sense of belonging at their new school At the conclusion of our Opening Assembly on Monday the boys lined the footpath leading to the Junior School and greeted the new staff and students with a handshake and a welcome In the words of the song Consider Yourself sung at the Assembly the boys can ldquoconsider themselves well inrdquoJust like the boys I watched on the first morning of school who couldnrsquot wait to get out of the car and through the doors I am excited We have a year ahead of us that is promising to be anything we want to make itI look forward to working together to develop the homeschool partnership that enables our boys to realise their very best A key to our success is keeping the channels of communication open The Weekly Bulletin is sent each Friday by email to all families The Bulletin is our way of letting you know what has and what will be happening around our school
