From the Headmaster Jesus Christ Superstar Our musical production of this spectacular show is now in the final days of rehearsals. With a cast and crew of over 150 students, together with a magnificent set, it is promising to be a memorable evening of theatre. There will be three performances of this musical on the evenings of Thursday 10, Friday 11 and Saturday 12 May commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets for this musical are selling very quickly. Details of ticket bookings can be found on a flyer later in this Bulletin. I encourage you to get tickets to the show and invite your family and friends – it promises to be a very special performance. OCGA 50 Year Lunch Last Sunday I attended the Old Camberwell Grammarians’ lunch in the Camberwell Room for past students who graduated at least 50 years ago. Over 150 people were in attendance, and it was wonderful to meet so many of our most senior community members once more, and to share their memorable times at school, and their lives since. The afternoon demonstrated clearly that friendships made at school can continue throughout all our lives. I am grateful to the OCGA, Mrs Suzy Chandler and her Development Office team for their work in preparing this lunch and other wonderful OCGA reunions. Next week I am attending an Old Boys’ function in Canberra, and in two weeks time, I will be attending Old Boys’ gatherings in Brisbane and Sydney. Later in the year I will be attending Grammarians’ Reunions in Western Australia and South Australia. It is always great to catch up with past students of our school all around Australia. I am also looking forward to a 60 Year Reunion (Pre 1958) in November. Further OCGA Events and Reunions can be viewed here. Gladwyn Cup The annual Gladwyn Cup competition was conducted last week. This Model United Nations Security Council competition looks for teams with thorough research, teamwork, diplomacy and effectiveness in getting their resolutions and amendments passed by the Council. After 4 hours of 20 teams exhibiting their best work, the 2018 winners were Year 11 students James Gunasegaram and Andrew Zeng representing the United States of America. It was my pleasure to present James and Andrew the Gladwyn Cup at yesterday’s Assembly. Paul Hicks, Headmaster Middle School William Angliss Dinner Invitations have gone out for the William Angliss Dinner on Tuesday 15 May. This night is for parents of Middle School boys and always proves to be a great occasion. Our guest speaker is Mr Geoff Ahern, who will be providing the latest information about Mental Health and supporting our boys in their formative years. Geoff is currently involved in a joint venture between Eastern Health and Victorian Police, responding to Mental Health emergencies. Click here to read his biography . NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an assessment program for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, testing knowledge and skills in Literacy and Numeracy. The results of these tests provide information for students, parents and teachers about student achievement which can be used to support teaching and learning programs. This year, students will be completing the tests online, using their own device. A trial was held last term, so students have had practice at navigating the tests and using the associated functionality. Machines will be provided for students whose devices are not compatible with the NAPLAN software. Headphones are required, and devices should be fully charged prior to each test. Students are encouraged to do their best. Although there is no specific revision, students will have been developing their literacy and numeracy skills through our English and Mathematics courses and should approach each test with confidence. The tests are intended to present a ‘snapshot’ of your son’s performance on a particular test on a particular day. Assessments throughout the year, posted on Schoology, give detailed information on your son’s performance on specific tasks, and include comments from his teachers. NAPLAN Student Achievement level reports will be received by the School from the VCAA and posted to parents. These reports show the performance of individual students in each area assessed compared with the National mean and median. Whilst this is useful information for students, the result for each assessed area is based on a single test and should be taken within the context of his performance throughout the year.If you have any questions relating to NAPLAN or wish to discuss your son’s performance once the test results have been received later in the year, please contact Mr Scott Wyatt at: [email protected] or Dr John Tuckfield at: [email protected].

Student Absence and Late Arrival/Early DepartureAs we head into the winter months it is inevitable that the cold/flu season will soon be upon us. A reminder to please send an email to [email protected] if your son is absent, arriving late to school or departing early for any reason.

Mouthguards The School highly recommends the use of professionally fitted mouthguards for students playing contact sports and during Physical Education lessons, particularly whilst studying Football and Hockey. They can be bought from chemists and personally moulded, or alternatively, visit your dentist and have it professionally fitted. The latter is the preferred option.

David Beardsley, Head of Physical EducationTroy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Mothers’ Day BreakfastA reminder that the Mothers’ Day Breakfast is on next Friday 11 May on the Junior School Green from 7.00am onwards. Freshly baked pastries, quiches, egg and bacon muffins, coffee/tea and hot chocolate will be available to purchase.Mr Kelly will also be taking photos of ‘mum and son’ towards the end of the green, so please take the opportunity to have a photo with your son/s, it will make a lovely memento of the special morning. Parking is available through gates 3 and 5, or in neighbouring streets. Limited parking is available through gate 1, however, cars must not remain in Pre-Prep spaces after 8.15am.

Mid-Year ConcertJunior School Orchestra, Junior School Choir and Chamber Singers will perform in the Mid-Year Concert on Thursday 24 May at 7.30pm in the PAC. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.trybooking.com/378954.

MusicMid-Year ConcertOur Mid-Year Concert on Thursday 24 May is fast approaching and all school ensembles have been rehearsing in earnest for this large-scale music event. I would like to thank all boys and families for their organisation, planning and practice that goes into our weekly rehearsals. At this time, I feel that it is important to remind all musicians of the importance of being present and on time at every rehearsal. Most rehearsals are listed in the School diary and take priority over all other commitments and appointments. Our Concerts usually sell out quickly, and so all are encouraged to book early. For this reason, we have decided to place a limit of four tickets per family for the initial release to ensure that we can accommodate as many families as possible. If more tickets are available closer to the time of the concert, we will communicate this via the School Bulletin or email. Ensembles performing are:

Jesus Christ SuperstarOur large cast, choir and orchestra have been working after school, on weekends and evenings since last November to create and perfect this year’s Senior School Production, which involves over 120 students from Camberwell Grammar School and Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College. I encourage all families to secure their seats quickly for this iconic and engaging musical, brought to life for three performances, only from Thursday 10 May to Saturday 12 May. https://www.trybooking.com/UWIZ.

New Zealand Music Tour 2019 - Monday 16 September to Wednesday 25 September 2019We are delighted to be proposing a Music School Tour to New Zealand in September 2019 that will include Highton Strings, the Chorale with the possible inclusion of other selected students. Parents and students of these ensembles will have received a letter and we ask that the Expression of Interest Form be signed and returned to the Music Office by Tuesday 8 May 2018 so that we can gauge the number of parents attending the Information Evening.

Liederfest 2018On Sunday 29 April the Australian Lieder Society held its annual competition to find the best student singers in the country. Camberwell Grammar School musicians once again provided a program for the entertainment of the nationwide audience whilst the adjudicators were deliberating over their verdict. Freddy Branson (Year 8) and Nicholas Branson (Year 5), accompanied by Ms Ann Beadell, delighted everyone present in the MLC Auditorium with a recital of pieces by Faure, Bloch and Enescu.

SportGood luck to all for this week for the start of winter sport, specially the Year 7s as they embark on their first winter season of many more to come. Just a reminder to all parents that students are to attend all scheduled training sessions and matches and can only be excused with a note to the Sport Department or the coach of the team. They are also required to wear the new and correct sport uniform. Any student who fails in their attempt to follow the rules above will be sanctioned. Please support the School by enforcing this from home as the initial contact.

Sport ReportThe First XVIII Football team headed to Mentone last weekend, looking to be competitive and disciplined. Despite playing play high-intensity football and having the majority of the play, Camberwell were outscored by their opposition three goals to zero in the first quarter. However, the team kept their faith in their structures and a subtle change in tactics meant the side were able to wrestle back the momentum and kick four unanswered goals heading into half-time. With a newfound sense of confidence and belief, the team overwhelmed their opposition in the second half, as Ayce Taylor (Year 12) and Ryan Walsh (Year 11) intercepted everything that came their way, while Lachlan Cartwright’s (Year 12) run and carry, coupled with the immense pressure of the inside midfielders and small forwards broke open the match. When the final siren rang, First XVIII Football had claimed their first win in a long time, defeating last year’s semi-finalists Mentone by 17 points. On Saturday morning, six Cross Country teams represented the School during the Victorian All Schools Relays Championships at Jells Park. In the short course, where each runner had to complete 3km, the Under 14s came in 16th place, with emergency Roy Fleming (Year 7) stepping up to run a terrific leg. The Under 16 teams placed 11th and 16th on the day, thanks to strong runs from Lachlan Wei (Year 8) and Jimmy Smith (Year 9). In the 4km course, both the Under 18s and Under 20s teams performed impressively against some tough competition, which included national level athletes.

Sustainability UpdateNext week, from Monday 7 May to Friday 11 May is Green Week at Camberwell Grammar School. Towards2050, the student led Sustainability Group, is encouraging students to adopt one of the pledges outlined below in the hope they will come to understand the power of their individual and daily decisions. As many of you will have noticed in the news, or by any river or beach – plastics are becoming an emblem of our impact on the environment. Cutting back on soft plastics, which are difficult to recycle and which take over a hundred years to break down in landfill, starts with an understanding of their current ubiquity in our lives. According to Clean up Australia, our country dumps around 7150 plastic bags into landfill every minute. We are asking the boys to keep track of all the soft plastics they use next week to illustrate the sheer mass of this substance that is floating around our lives. This would include the soft plastics they use at school – such as Glad Wrap, zip-lock bags and other food wrapping, and also the soft plastics they are involved with at home, including those associated with their food. Finally, others will pledge to get themselves to school without the use of a car for the week – at the time of writing, the weather is looking good for the week so it might be time to brush cobwebs from the old bike. The week will be rounded off on Friday with a (green theme) free dress day. Those who wear free clothes will be asked for a $5 donation, which will be distributed by the Youth and Philanthropy Group to the Abbotsford Convent Foundation, the Alternative Technology Association Inc and Beyond Zero Emissions Inc, along with all money raised by the kangaroo sausage sizzle which will be held at lunch on Friday.
