Advent 2019!!!

Revised Mass Schedule for 2020:Dear Parishioners,

On the first Sunday of January - 5th Jan, Our Lady Help of Christians and St Joseph’s will begin a new Sunday Mass schedule. St Patrick’s Okato and Bell Block Catholic Centre have already begun their changes. Sunday Mass will be 9am at St Joseph’s and 10:30am at Our Lady Help of Christians. Thank you for your patience as everyone adapts to the schedule. Sunday Masses in the parish will be:

Okato 6pm Vigil/Pungarehu 8:30am Sunday - communities will alternate Sunday Mass; St Joseph’s Mass 9am and 5:30pm Sunday; OLHC 5:30pm Vigil and 10:30am Sunday; Bell Block Catholic Centre One Mass/month – first Sunday of month 10:30am, with a Liturgy of the Word and Holy Communion on the 3rd Sunday of the month.

These changes are due to the reduced number of priests available for Sunday Masses. There is no longer a Fr. Frank Garty at Okato; a Fr. Jim Rickard at Bell Block; or a priest in Opunake. The numbers of priests and parishioners has declined since the 1970’s especially. However, a significant number of us are still at Sunday Eucharist every week.

Pope Francis has asked parishes around the world to rediscover their missionary baptismal identity. Most of us recognise the need to be missional in our own land and to pray for a new Pentecost. We are doing this by utilizing Alpha as our main tool to respond to the call to be missional. It is the best evangelization process available to propose the Christian faith to those interested. In January and February 2020, we will as a parish invite people from the wider community to attend the February/March/April Alpha. We have begun the process in which the Catholic Parish of New Plymouth becomes a healthy and growing faith community that brings people to Christ, forms disciples, and sends them out to transform the world.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Simon
