Father Joseph Saw Tha Khu:Dear Parishioners,

I’m Fr. Joseph Saw Tha Khu, a Diocesan priest of the Arch-Diocese of Yangon, Myanmar, also known as Burma. I was born in a village (8.5.79), Danuphyu, Ayerwaddy Division. My mother was a convert from a Buddhist family and also my father’s parents were the converts from Buddhism before my father’s birth. Even though we are different in religions, we live in peace and harmony. I have two brothers and three sisters and I’m the youngest. My two brothers are married, but my three sisters are all single and they are living in one house together. They all are farmers. My parents passed away before my ordination.

My home parish is St. Andrew Parish, Nyaungdon. When I passed the High School Final Exam, I entered Intermediate Seminary, Bago in 2001. I studied Philosophy (2004-2005) at St. Joseph Catholic Major Seminary, Pyin Oo Lwin. In 2004, I got the degree of BA-History from Yangon-University. In 2006, I studied for spiritual practices, meditations in St. Michael Spiritual Seminary of Taunggyi. I studied Theology (2007-2010) at St. Joseph Catholic Major Seminary, Yangon. In 2011, I gained a Bachelor of Sacred Theology through the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome.

On February 11th 2012, on the Feast Day of our Lady of Lourdes, I was ordained by His Grace Archbishop Charles Bo (now he is the Cardinal, the president of FABC) at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Nyaunglebin. After my ordination, I was sent as an associate priest to my home parish. In 2013, I was sent to Solomon Islands to serve in Gizo Diocese. In 2015, I came back to Myanmar and served as the associate priest in three parishes, one in Pyapon, two in Yangon city. And then in November 2019, I was sent again to New Zealand to serve you, here.

New Zealand is cold but beautiful country. I admired the people here because they greet each other with smiling faces whether they know each other or not. I’m happy to make a visit to the people and to the elder people so that I begin to know the culture, the daily life-style and their experiences. And then I may serve the people of God well.

Kye Zue Tim Bar Ter (translates to Thank You)
