Principal’s Message

WEEK 9 TERM 1

25 March 2020

Thanks for Your Support

If you are in a position to keep your children home,

please do so.

As directed by the Premier, we have asked staff who have

compromised immune systems, are in higher risk categories or who

care for people in higher risk categories to work from home.

This means we have a reduced number of staff at school each day

to supervise face to face learning. This also means we will combine

students from different classes for those students who attend each

day. Learning will continue albeit with different expectations and

more through an online format. Today we launched the online

learning platform. There has been some great success with this,

along with a few small speed bumps.

Let me also remind parents to not put too much pressure on your

family. This is not home schooling, you are not expected to be your

child’s teacher from 9:00am until 3:00pm very day. Do not feel

compelled to complete everything.

Learning will look different and so it should as your family spend

time together. Do as little or as much as is right for your family. This

will look different for everyone.

Cleaners

This is just a quick shout out to our cleaners who are part of our

frontline defence. They are doing an amazing job in teams keeping

our rooms clean. We have adjusted our workforce roster to include

cleaners sanitising classrooms and high traffic areas during the

school day. Cleaners are doing extra cleaning each evening to

make sure everything is fresh for the next day.

I am very grateful our cleaners make a difference to the wellbeing

of our school community. You will also see in this newsletter we are

looking for additional cleaning staff, please contact the school if you

are interested in this work.

Parents in Schools

After the Prime Minister’s announcement last night, we need to

make some changes to reducing the number of unnecessary

gatherings in our school.

Our school changes are listed below:

No use of school playgrounds before or after school,

except for OSHC.

Pick up arrangements - It does not make sense to

have adults waiting for students in the undercover

areas or in groups outside classrooms. Please collect

your child from one of the three pick-up areas. Ideally

you can collect them without leaving your car. I

understand there will be some students with specific

needs and in these instances, parents can discuss

with the class teacher individual pick up

arrangements. Our Prep teachers will email families

today to let them know of our revised pick up

procedures for Prep students.

We are not having volunteers in classrooms until

further notice.

We are also not offering access to external providers

during school hours, with the exception of student

medical conditions. These services will have to occur

outside of school hours for now.

School Values

Through these unsettling times, I have seen the best of the

Samford community and the values of our school being

demonstrated every day. These values have been identified in our

new school Strategic Plan, constructed in collaboration with our

School Council.

Kindness- The empathy and generosity across our community

reflects how we bring out the best in each other.

Curiosity- Every day there are new opportunities to think

outside the box. As we re-shape learning more into an online

environment, it will be a more flexible space for students to follow

their interests to engage in learning about things that deeply

interest them.

Citizenship- I can feel the way our community is connected

and I see every day the way people are acting in the best

interests of others. Our students have taken amazing

responsibility for themselves and those around them.

Respect- Every interaction I have with students, parents, staff

or community members has respect ingrained into it. Everyone is

acting with the highest level of integrity and authenticity as they

support each other, withholding judgement.

Growth Mindset- I have said it several times already, but the

way our students are showing adaptability, perseverance,

tenacity and resilience is commendable. They approach

everyday with an open mind and are ready to learn, a true sign of

a learner in modern times.

Family Wellbeing

Tips for Taking Care of the Wellbeing of your Family during Covid-19

Limit Media Intake

While it’s important to be up to date with current information and

advice it is also important to monitor how much media you and

your family are viewing. Too much time spent watching and

listening to the same media alerts can increase our feelings of

uncertainty and fear. Decide ahead of time how you will stay

updated and switch off the news at the pre-agreed time.

Talk to your children

Our children are talking about the virus just like we are all talking

about the virus. Help them to stick to the facts about Covid-19 with

honest and age-appropriate conversations. Explain how the virus

spreads and ways to protect themselves and others from

spreading the virus. Encourage them to ask questions so you can

clear up any misunderstandings or false information.

It’s important children know that most people who get the virus

don’t get very sick. Some people who get sick will die but most

people will get better. Also talk about the fact there are people who

have been working their whole lives to help in situations like this.

Your child may have feelings of worry or fear which is a normal

reaction to our circumstances. Validate their feelings by letting

them know it’s normal to feel that way.

One Day at a Time

Focus on making a plan for the day. Projecting too far into the future

provokes anxiety as we focus on the things that are out of our

control. Instead we can look at the things that can be achieved in a

single day. Include a mixture of activities to break up the day e.g.

attending to work and learning goals, picnic in the yard, preparing a

healthy dinner, facetiming a friend, reading, puzzles and tidying up a

room or cupboard.

Look for the opportunities

While we are living through unprecedented challenges we also have

unique opportunities. What opportunities will social isolation bring to

you and your family? What projects will you now have space for?

What skills can you make a commitment to developing? How can

you strengthen your relationships during this time?

Spread kindness

Kindness is a powerful change agent. As an alternative to getting

caught up in fear and anxiety, make it a priority to show kindness to

each other and those in need of help. Notice the difference it makes

to your own sense of resilience and calm when you act with

kindness towards others and yourself.

Online Learning

Moving forward, here are some technical pointers that may help:

Students (Year 3 - 6) use the password they made up at school. It’s the one they use when logging on to laptops and

desktops;

Passwords can be reset by classroom teachers using the ‘Student Password Reset’ tool. The teachers need to be on site for

the tool to work;

When signing up to Office 365 and you get to the MIS page, don’t use the child’s email as their username, just their MIS ID;

If installing Office 365 on an iPad, omit 2a step 7 (instructions were emailed on Friday 20 March to families along with

usernames, passwords and links to online learning;

If purchasing an iPad in relation to online learning, I suggest getting one that will be used in the Year 4 - 6 iPad program. This

is Generation 6 and above (7th generation);

The 128Gb iPads are now hard to get. A 32Gb iPad is fine;

Teachers are preparing Class Notebook pages to support online learning. We are aiming for these to be ready by

Wednesday. Your current class teacher may not be the teacher supervising your child’s online learning, all the time;

Education Queensland students have free access to Grok Learning (learn computer coding languages). Use current MIS ID

and Username to login;

When installing SORA (eLibrary), please choose the ‘Education Queensland’ option;

There’s a range of helpful resources on the Learning@Home website.

Premier’s Coding Challenge

The challenge has begun! Last year, students from Samford State School won top prizes in two categories.

Code an interactive game to teach others about cybersafety (staying safe online). Find out more, here.

Stay safe and take care.

Library

Thank you

Thank you to the Samford community for supporting our Library over the Term. I know Kerry, Jodie and I

have enjoyed meeting many of you through your contact with us in the Library. We would also like to

extend our gratitude and appreciation to those who have offered their time by volunteering to help out with

Book Club, shelving and book covering.

Book Club

Book club has arrived and orders have been delivered to your child’s classroom. If you haven’t received your order, please contact us.

Readers Cup

I’d like to thank all the children who signed up to be a part of this year’s competition. Their enthusiasm was uplifting and I’d like to

acknowledge the hard work they put into preparing for this competition. Unfortunately, I have postponed the competition in its current

format, along with entering a team into the District final.

End of Term Procedures

Generally at this time, we put a call out to return any outstanding books before the start of the holidays. However, if this is not possible,

please hold onto your child’s loans until school resumes. Also, please take advantage of our digital library which gives access to an

extensive collection of books to borrow through the Sora app. Details will be available through your child’s Class Notebook.

Happy reading,

Support Jack B of 6A!

Jack B of Year 6A is taking part in the World’s Greatest shave this

year to help raise awareness and money for cancer research.

Unfortunately his plans to shave his head on our final assembly

can’t go ahead. So Jack will be bravely shaving his head with the

Jack has raised over $690 which is a huge effort! But he needs to

raise more to hit his target of $800. There is a donation box in the

It is with regret that I announce that I won't be offering the ASA guitar program in

be invited to continue lessons via video link, to ensure continuity of instruction. I

am looking forward to once again offering in person lessons when the situation

Upcoming Vacation Care

We are still going ahead with our vacation care program and enrolments are now open. We are however

going to have some flexibility when it comes to our excursions and will rely on advice from the World Health

Organisation and the Early Childhood Education and Care (Department of Education) to see if these will go

ahead.

We are lucky enough to have our own private screening for the movies so we will only have our children in

the cinema as well as our educators. We have reduced the number of children whom will be able to attend

these excursions to 50 children and our splitting of the juniors and seniors has assisted with this number

reduction.

Online bookings can be made here. Enrolments close for vacation care on 1 April 2020. The package can be viewed here.

What Else Have We Been Up To?

This week we have been working in the garden and propagating more lavender, basil and rosemary. We harvested the sweet potato and

gave this away to our families and also picked some rosemary and dried this out to use at a later date. Lastly we stacked our new timber

for the pizza oven, so we are all ready to go to cook damper, pizza’s and bread in it.

We have been spending as much time as possible outside, playing on the hard courts, oval, nature space, playground, garden and the

undercover areas.

We have also been creating magic wands with sticks we have found on our nature walks and used our scrap wool to wrap around the

stick. This experience was enjoyed by all ages and kept all children engaged for a long time.

Attitude of Gratitude

Put some gratitude into your attitude!

There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for! Take a moment to appreciate the things in your life

that bring you comfort, joy and meaning.

Please email what you’re grateful for to [email protected] and it will appear

anonymously here next fortnight.

Kindness is contagious - pass it on!

Everyone throughout the school are simply amazing.

Grateful to Andrew for keeping things down to earth with the smell of freshly mowed grass.

Thanks to all the school staff who are on the front line during this pandemic, especially working with the grotty

younger ones! I really appreciate the effort you have gone to ensure our kids are still able to learn during this time,

and the clear communication that we have received from the school. Please stay safe and look after yourselves.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the updates during this time. Although a long read, it’s great, informed

information. Keep it up as best you can over what is very tiring circumstances.

I’m grateful for the butterflies at the moment.

We hugely appreciate the stress that Samford State School staff will be under at this time, and the efforts you are

going to, to both keep school open as necessary and cater for the kids at home. We will be supportive of all

learning initiatives going forward but would like to emphasise that for us, this is firmly second place to the safety

and wellbeing of educators as well as the community as a whole.

Our first year with our little Prep boy, and words can’t even express our gratitude. We have a huge amount of

admiration for the teachers and staff at Samford State!! We will all get through this and rise up. Sending so much

love, support, praise and continued positivity to all the staff. What a wonderful community we are so fortunate to

have. Take care, keep smiling and together we will pull through! It certainly takes a village… and we have an

exceptional village!!

I just wanted to send thanks for all the hard work the leadership team have done, and will continue to do in the

coming days and weeks. I don't envy the leadership challenges you are all facing head on, and have absolute

confidence that you will continue to do an amazing job. Please take care and I look forward to seeing you on the

other side.

Top work Samford State School - you've turned our teeth-gritting-painfully decision to do what felt right, into a

much more comfortable, it'll be hard but we're in it together, kind of feeling. This action is what leadership is

supposed to look like. I cannot recall when I last saw that in the wild. This makes me proud to be a part of the

Samford Valley.

Loved the ‘What’s happening’ document - fantastic to see it all on one page—thanks!

Thank you for the continual updates. It’s wonderful to be apart of such a great community.

I would like to congratulate the entire school team on your clear and timely communications during this global

pandemic. I wish you, your family and friends all the best of health.

You are all doing a really great job in unprecedented and trying times. Thanks to the whole school team. We

appreciate it and it just confirms how thankful we are to be with Samford State School.

Very grateful for the warmth and support of a hot cup of tea!

Thank you so much to the continued commitment to learning for our kids. The constant update that you provide our

parents is exemplary - clearer than our government. Thank you to the amazing teaching staff at Samford State

School.

As a registered nurse working in the COVID19 clinics I am very worried about the roll on effect it will take on

people’s mental health. Providing links in the newsletter to mental health support is a really thoughtful idea and is

a great resource for anyone feeling like they need that little extra support during this time of stress.

I’m grateful for clear vision on a cloudy day.

I just wanted to congratulate Samford State School for the way this complex situation has been handled. The flow

of information has been excellent and the hard work by all involved to set up the online platform is very

impressive! Despite the truly terrible circumstances, as a new Prep parent at the school I have been impressed by

how well things have been handled. Keep up the good work!

Thankyou very much for all the comprehensive updates! Stay safe everyone in and out of school. Look after each

other in which ever way possible.

I was online last night setting up the three virtual classrooms on our system. Assembled a wonderful array of

learning materials. It is well structured, explained, the log in process was straight forward and I think it will be

excellent. I know there will be teething problems but for us, it’s exactly what we hoped for and more. These are

unprecedented times, but the effort that has gone into this delivery by Samford State School is awesome. Well

done - to be able to continue roughly ‘as planned’ under Brad’s direction and feedback is reassuring. It also lifts a

big load from us at home and is greatly appreciated. I know Brad and the staff have had to go miles ‘above and

beyond’ to achieve this. I have seen what a number of other schools in this State have offered to parents and this

is certainly an exceptional and a rapid response. Congratulations to everyone involved and I hope this quickly

enables more staff to also work from home.

Thank you to everyone who contributed this fortnight.

History shows that each major outbreak is different and, just like previous outbreaks, we don’t know how this one will end. The fallout of any disease largely depends on other circumstances – when we catch it, how contagious and fatal it is, how hygienic people are, and how quickly a vaccine or cure becomes available. But there’s one thing that a disease, or any other crisis for that matter, can’t break … and that’s the connection we have as human beings and our ability to help and support one another through tough times. COVID-19 is affecting our Samford Community in many ways and those affects change weekly, if not daily. Responding to these affects at a local level is imperative as each community is different and has its own issues and needs in regards to this disease.

With the Samford Support Network (SSN) coordinating the community response, a number of local businesses, professionals and community organisations have come together to provide a response service for members of the community who are struggling due to self-isolation (be it voluntary or otherwise). This service ensures they receive basic requirements such as food and medication. The service will also offer emotional and psychological support to the community.

The Samford COVID-19 Response Plan is aimed at capturing the scope, actions and control measures for coordinating available volunteer resources in the Samford area and responding to urgent requests for assistance. Initially, community members in the following suburbs are covered by this plan: Samford Village, Samford Valley, Wights Mountain, Camp Mountain, Highvale, Closeburn, Cedar Creek, Yugar and Draper. For up-to-date information from the COVID-19 Samford Response Service, please use the contact details above and follow the SSN Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/samfordsupportnetwork/ Volunteers are the heart and soul behind any successful community response, and the SSN will need additional volunteers for this service. If you would like to help, please visit the SSN Covid-19 website at https://samfordsupportnetwork.com/covid-19/ and complete the online application form. Other relevant links include:

Ferny Grove State High School

ENROLMENTS NOW OPEN FOR 2021

The key to a successful and smooth transition to high school is preparation. Our Expression of Interest (EOI) for 2021 Student enrolment opens on Monday 2 March. If you have a Year 6 student coming to us next year or know of a family hoping to enroll for next year, can you please complete an EOI once they open. You can find these forms on the school website under the enrolments tab. These need to be completed and returned to Ferny Grove State High School by Twilight Evening, 27 May, as we will be taking bookings for enrolment sessions at this event. You will need to have completed the EOI and received an acceptance of enrolment to be eligible to book an enrolment session time. We will be holding group enrolment sessions for parents/guardians and students. At these sessions we will take a head shot of prospective Year 7 students so we have photos of our students from Day 1. We will go through the numerous enrolment forms and explain what they are for, highlighting what information we require from parents. There will be a discussion of the Responsible Behaviour Plan, Mobile Phone Policy, uniform expectations and ICT requirements. We are offering the Enrolment sessions on the following dates:

* Tuesday 9 June * Wednesday 10 June * Thursday 11 June
