Year 4
Week Beginning: 22nd June 2020
x We have seen some amazing examples of work from home. Some of you are
putting in so much effort into your work, which is absolutely great to see. Please continue to send us at least 3 pictures of yourself or your work to [email protected]. Don’t forget to include your name!
x Our 3 class times table stars (fastest studio speeds) are Ethan, Devon and Anisha. Some of you have really speedy fingers. Keep it up!
x Have you done anything interesting this week? I (Miss Kaur) have been doing a steps challenge with my brother. We track how many steps we do a day and have a competition. I won the first challenge by getting to 10,000 steps first. It gets very close towards the end so I walk round and round the garden to get my steps up and make sure I win! Out next challenge is the first to reach 30,000.
x If you are confused about anything, we are here to help. Just email us and one of the teachers will reply as soon as we can.
x This week, we have included some extra Maths reasoning practice. Have a go at the reasoning test whenever it is convenient this week.
x Can anyone solve this? Let us know if you figure it out!
Keep safe and we will hopefully see you all soon,
Miss Kaur, Miss Fagan and Miss Resch

This is an optional activity that you can do with your family at any time this week. We’d love to see pictures of
what you do.
I was inspired by this news article about a boy in
Birmingham, who has been cheering up his neighbours in
lockdown by putting jokes up in his window every day.
Can you create your own joke book or joke poster? Maybe everyone in the family could contribute one
joke? Make it look really bright and cheerful.
Miss Resch and Miss Fagan both used the computer to help them make their joke posters.
Monday Daily Tasks
1) Daily calculations 2) Reading 3) TT Rockstars
Task 1 -English
Reading – Summarising Summarising is giving the main and important ideas of a text, using your own words. Because you only give the main points, it will be shorter than the original text. Read a page in your reading book. Complete a hand outline with this information:
- Finger 1: Who are the important characters? - Finger 2: Where are they? - Finger 3: When is this happening? - Finger 4: What is the important thing that happens? - Thumb: Why/how? Now, use your hand outline to summarise what you read. Try to write no
more than 3 sentences. Have you included only the key facts? Double check by reading the page again. Can you make your summary any shorter?
Task 2 - Maths
Co-ordinates – To give co-ordinates, first you look at how far across a point is (x-axis) and then how far up it is (y-axis) e.g. Point A on the map is (1,8) because it is in column 1 across and row 8 up. Have a go at the game below to practise. http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L350/index.html
Task 3 - Topic Vikings
This picture is of Alfred the Great. He was an Anglo-Saxon king.
Alfred made good laws and believed education was important. He had books translated from Latin into English, so people could read them. He also told monks to begin writing the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. To help protect his kingdom from Viking attacks, Alfred built forts and walled towns known as ' burhs '.
There is a legend about King Alfred burning cakes. Research this legend to find out what happened. Write down what happened in your exercise books.
Write an apology from Alfred about how sorry he was for burning the cakes. Record your apology using Chatterpix. Send your videos to us by email. [email protected]
1.Which point is at the bottom right?
2.Which two points are to the left of C?
3. Write the co-ordinates for each location. E.g. A( 1,8)
B (_,_) C (_,_) D (_,_) E (_,_)
Tuesday Daily Tasks

x 3 adjectives that are used to make the hotel sound appealing x 3 expanded noun phrases x A fact x An opinion x A question x What different punctuation is used? x A conjunction (not and)
Would you go to this hotel? Why? Why not? Task 2 - Maths
Task 3 – Science/ PSHE/ RE
Summer solstice Last Saturday, the 20th June, was the Summer Solstice. In some countries, it is celebrated as
the Midsummer festival. 1) Find out what the Summer Solstice is. 2) Find out when the Summer Solstice is for the Southern
Hemisphere. Why is it different to ours? 3) Why do our days get longer and shorter? 4) How do pagans celebrate the solstice (or Litha)? What are they celebrating? Where do
they celebrate? 5) Finally, create a piece of art or write an acrostic poem to celebrate the solstice.
Wednesday Daily Tasks
1) Daily calculations 2) Reading 3) PE with Joe 4) TT Rockstars
Task 1 -English
Having stolen your dragon, you decide you don’t actually want THIS one and so need to sell it on to another Viking. This week and next, you will be creating an advert for it. Draw a detailed picture of the dragon you have stolen from the Dragon Nursery cave. What type of dragon is it? What makes it special? Remember to make it sound amazing. Label the body parts with noun phrases. E.g powerful wings or huge, hypnotising eyes.
Task 2 - Maths
Draw coordinates Mark the points using the co-ordinates given in the game below. When you enter the game, it will show you three different shapes. Click the L shape to play. https://www.teacherled.com/iresources/coordinates/showthecoordinate/
Task 3 – Topic -Vikings
Use the recipe on the next page to make some Anglo-Saxon cakes for Alfred to give to the woman whose cakes he burnt. Send some pictures of your cakes to [email protected] How do your cakes taste? Do you prefer them to modern day cakes or not?
Thursday Daily Tasks – spelling
Practise these words from the Year 3/Year 4 spelling list. Write out each word twice, decide whether it is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb and then write it in a sentence.
x reign x remember x sentence x separate x special
Task 1 -English
Possessive Apostrophes Apostrophes can be used to show when something belongs to someone or something else. Watch this video to remind yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNFPnVz7JB4 Write at least 6 sentences about the dragon you drew yesterday using possessive apostrophes. Can you use both the singular possessive and the plural possessive? Challenge – Rather than repeating the word dragon, try to use alternative nouns or think about the parts of its body. Examples: Singular – The beast’s long, arched neck raises its head up high, allowing you to tower over your victim. Plural – The spikes’ sharp, jagged edges rip apart anything that gets in the way.
Task 2 – Maths
Draw coordinates.
Task 3 – Computing
Coding is a useful skill to have in our digital world. It teaches you how computers work and lets you start controlling them. Coding is about writing algorithms (extremely specific instructions) which tells the computer what you want it to do. When we make a mistake, we have to know how to problem solve so that we can fix the bug (error in our code). https://turtleacademy.com/lessons Have a go at the coding lessons on this website. It teaches you to write code for a program called Logo. Have a go at lessons 9-16 today. You can re-cap lessons 1-8 first if you need to. (Remember to go forward 50 steps you write: forward 50 or fd 50)
x straight x strange x strength x suppose x surprise x
Friday Daily Tasks
1) Daily calculations 2) Reading 3) PE with Joe 4) TT Rockstars
Task 1 English
Reading – Summarising
1. Complete the who, what, where, when, why/how hand (like Monday) for this text. 2. Use your hand to summarise the text. Aim for less than 3 sentences, using your own words.
Task 2 - Maths
Maths challenge Can you work out what each shape is worth? This is a problem-solving task so you will need to try different options. I had to try about 10 different numbers before I found the answer. HINT: Choose a number for the triangle. Use the 1st row to find out the circle. Then check your numbers for the triangle and circle in Row 2.
Task 3 –R.E
Life is a journey – Becoming an adult In Judaism, there is a special ceremony which celebrates a child growing up and becoming an adult. It happens at the age of 12 or 13. It is called the Bar Mitzvah (boys) or Bat Mitzvah (girls). They now have responsibility for their actions instead of their parents being responsible for them. https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/clips/zm7tfg8
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02n2kgx
Watch the videos and then write a diary entry of the Bat Mitzvah or Bar Mitzvah day as if you were Jeremy or Me-me. Make sure you include facts about what happens as well their emotions. Challenge: compare the Bar Mitzvah to a ceremony in another religion. What is similar or different?
“A dragon is a working animal,” said Stoick the Vast. “Too much hugging and kissing will make him lose his vicious streak.”
“But Newtsbreath will kill him if I leave him alone with them.” Newtsbreath gave an appreciative growl. “It would be my pleasure,” he hissed.
“Nonsense,” boomed Stoick, unaware of Newtsbreath’s last remark, as he didn’t speak Dragonese. He gave Newtsbreath a friendly cuff around the horns. “Newtsbreath just wants to play. That sort of rough
and tumble is good for a young dragon. Makes him learn to stick up for himself.” Hookfang extended his claws like flick-knives and drummed them on the hearth.
Hiccup pretended to say goodnight to Toothless by the fire, but smuggled him into the bedroom under his tunic.
Have you remembered to do the reasoning practice paper? If not, do it now.
