YL2W ROUND 8

MORNINGTON vs. FRANKSTON

Round eight has come around in a flash and we’re well and truly into the crux of the 2018 Big V season now! Hopefully your association has started on the right foot, if not, there’s plenty of time to recover!

One team who is trending in the right direction are the Pakenham Warriors, who didn’t get to have that luxury last season. The Warriors are sitting 5-1 and face a struggling Suns outfit who are yet to register a win for the year. Ellie Coutts has continued her stellar form averaging 11.5ppg and 9rpg. For the young Suns, Zoe Haritos is leading the charge and will need another 8+points and 5+rebounds to add to her averages.

The young Sharks suffered their first loss of the season last week and will be keen to avenge that defeat with a dominating performance against the Steelers. Western Port bounced back from two losses in a row with a victory last week and will hope to claim a big scalp this time out. Myra Wood (10ppg) is in some good form, as is Ebony Baxter (7.5ppg, 7.7rpg). Southern Peninsula have plenty of talent and will use their depth to get across the line.

Frankston travel to Mornington to face the Breakers where the Blues just haven’t had any luck on the road. Their three most recent trips have ended in three losses by six, six and two points. The Blues will rely on Tori Jackson (10ppg, 8.5rpg) and Annabel Fitter (10ppg) to put the team back on track, while the Breakers, who are searching for their first win will be looking to improve their offensive output over the coming weeks.

Werribee are yet to win on the road in 2018, so they’ll be chuffed that Casey must enter Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. For the Cavs, it currently doesn’t matter where they’re playing because they seem to have the answer for anyone! For a team that went so close to a ‘chip in ’16 in YL1W, it’s been an unfortunate fall for the Devils who are now struggling in the tier lower sitting at 2-5. The Cavs on the other hand, weren’t even around in youth women two years ago!

The one and only Sunday game comes out of Mill Park when Whittlesea play host to the Vikings. The Pacers are the side on the up, while Blackburn are

still licking their wounds after being runners-up in 2017. The Vikes sit at 5-2 and are arguably flying under the radar, while Whittlesea have retooled and found a number of contributors this season such as LT Poa and Hailey Wynd. Watch out for Isabella Nolen for the visitors to have an influence!

YL2M ROUND 8

MORNINGTON vs. WESTERN PORTWill this weekend by the weekend that we see Latrobe take their first win for the season? They are up against the Pacers who sit just above them on the ladder and have fallen to three straight losses. But in the Pacers last three matches, they have taken on some top seeded teams which hasn’t helped their campaign for wins. The Energy may just be the target they having been waiting for. Hopefully the Energy can give some support to Luis D’Angelo who put on a great display last weekend.

The Blues may have settled in to their winning ways but we think this will all come to an end this weekend. They come up against the Pakenham Warriors, who have worked their way to 5 straight wins. This game will make it the second time these two have met this season, previously coming up against each other in round 1. In that match up, it was the Blues that took home the win by 8 points. But there has been a lot of basketball that has been played in between then and now, and we think the Warriors will have no trouble in redeeming themselves.

It will be a successful weekend for the Warriors who back up on the Sunday against the Panthers. This Panthers side has not seen a win in a number of weeks and have almost forgotten that winning feeling. But from where we sit, they will

be no match for the Warriors. They have too much fire power with Lee Belton, Ned Weideman and Matt Berkec for them to content with so it will be at least another week of waiting for that next win to com.

After so many weeks of win after win, the Eagles finally met their match in the Thoroughbreds last week. They have another tough game ahead of them when they take on the Maccabi Warriors this weekend. The last time these two met was back in round 1 and it was a close finish with only 2 points separating the two. On that occasion it was the Warriors who took home the W but we think they’ll struggle to make it 2 from 2. The Eagles want to get back on the winners list and have proven time and time again just how easy it is.

The Gulls are going to find themselves up against the wall this weekend when they take on both the Thoroughbreds and the Steelers. If they are to come away with at least the one win this weekend, we think they’ll find it on the Sunday. But in their first match up against the Thoroughbreds, they won’t be getting the job done. This Thoroughbreds side was the side to put an end to the Eagles streak of wins and do it comfortably as well. They have a deep roster with multiple contributors, all

of which fire during the one game. The Gulls will be no match.

The Steelers have managed to find some form of late and are slowly working their way up the ladder. But if we are to look at the ladder, the Gulls are only one placing behind. As seems to be the pattern this round, these two also played once before back in round 1. It was a 9 point win to the Gulls, a margin that can always be improved on by either side.

There will be another opportunity for the Steelers to get a win on the Saturday night when they meet with the Breakers. The Breakers were made to look second rate last week, losing by a decent 50

points against Pakenham. They will want to put this behind them quick smart and hopefully do it with a win here. If they can get their shooters on point in this match, they will have a good chance at a win.

Having got themselves in a place of stringing a couple of wins together, it looks like it’s going to be shortlived for the All Stars as they come up against the in form Thoroughbreds. The Thoroughbreds will prove to be one of the toughest opponents the All Stars have come up against in the past couple of weeks and we hope the All Stars are prepared for it. They need to get themselves ahead early if they are to give themselves any chance at an upset.
