Rep.: DemsWaging WarOn Whites WASHINGTON (AP) — A Re-
publican congressman from Al-abama says Democrats areengaged in a “war on whites.”
Congressman Mo Brooksmade his comment on conser-vative talk radio host Laura In-graham’s program on Monday. He said the Democratic Partyclaims white people hateeveryone else and that it’s partof President Barack Obama’sstrategy of dividing people onthe basis of race, sex and class.
The remarks came in a dis-cussion of immigration legisla-tion passed last week by theHouse that could result in in-creased deportations.
Brooks was responding toanalysis saying that the Repub-lican Party risks losing any ap-peal to Latino voters and willnot be able to be successful ina national race if it appealsonly to white voters.
“This is a part of the war onwhites that’s being launchedby the Democratic Party. Andthe way in which they arelaunching this war is by claim-ing that whites hate everybodyelse,” said Brooks. “It’s a partof the strategy that BarackObama implemented in 2008,continued it in 2012, where hedivides us all on race, on sex, creed, envy, class warfare — allthose kinds of things.”
Brooks defended his com-ments in a phone interviewTuesday with The AssociatedPress and disputed the sugges-tion they were incendiary. Hesaid that Democrats were theones being incendiary, pointingto comments including an as-sertion by House DemocraticLeader Nancy Pelosi this yearthat the GOP’s failure to act oncomprehensive immigrationlegislation had something todo with race.
“Race should not be anissue in public policy debates,we should be colorblind, weshould be the melting pot,”Brooks told The AP. “But solong as the Democrats have apolitical campaign strategy todivide Americans based onskin pigmentation then theyare the ones who are fanningthe fires and doing a disserviceto our country, not those whotry to hold the Democrats ac-countable for what is a verycounterproductive and sinistercampaign tactic.”
Congress is beginning afive-week summer recess.
