PIPER ALPHA 30 th Anniversary On July 6 th Aberdeen will hear a lone piper play a lament for all the 167 lives lost; 2 of these were rescue crew. So many recommendations have been put in place including inherent safety design recommendations, Safety Management Systems and the Safety case. The behaviours and language of safety culture have also changed yet some mistakes have been made again. In a moving new piece called PIPER ALPHA, from the experienced Andy Powrie of AKT (Deepwater, Fukushima, The Mousehole, NIMROD) the story is re-told with relevance for the workforce who remember the tragedy and those who have never heard of it. “... these ideas about storytelling are directly relevant for accident prevention. What has struck me about so many major accidents is that they are depressingly similar to earlier accidents and occur because the companies concerned have not learnt the lessons of those earlier accidents, or have forgotten them… Some companies have made a start by documenting the major accidents that have given rise to their various safety procedures, but they have not taken the next step of ensuring that all employees are able to tell the stories of these earlier accidents, so enabling them to make the connection with current procedures.” Andrew Hopkins Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Australian National University Please contact Susan Fleming 089 381 3802 or Marianne Parackal ( NSW, VIC ) 0411 678 854 for booking enquiries. PIPER ALPHA 30th AnniversaryOn July 6th Aberdeen will hear a lone piper play a lament for all the 167 lives lost; 2 of these were rescue crew.

What has struck me about so many major accidents is that they are depressingly similar to earlier accidents and occur because the companies concerned have not learnt the lessons of those earlier accidents, or have forgotten them…

Some companies have made a start by documenting the major accidents that have given rise to their various safety procedures, but they have not taken the next step of ensuring that all employees are able to tell the stories of these earlier accidents, so enabling them to make the connection with current procedures.”

Susan Fleming and Nicchia Schutt-Toleman attended the CEO breakfast with Chris Sutherland (Managing Director, Programmed) and John Lee (Chief Executive Officer, Australian Sailing) offering a CEO’s perspective, with insights from Anne Taylor (Director, Strategic Safety Major Transport Infrastructure Program).

The panel was a great opportunity to offer varying perspectives on safety and its place in business culture with the three panellists willing to meet questions on the floor with candour on topics from random drug testing to CEO open door, and Programmed’s significant program addressing Domestic Violence.

The conversation brought home the 21st Century perspective that safety meant safety across the board for employees and contractors not just at the workplace with an emphasis on increased accountability for all.
