SUB-DIP Creative Media Production – Film & Television Semester 1 2014-15Unit 1:Pre-Production TechniquesUnit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

Biographical FilmIn this task we had to do a two-minute video, where we have to talk about ourselves. I also wrote out a script so I would have it next to me when I was filming my video.      Editing SoftwareI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because I’m familiar with Premier pro feathers. Whenever I upload my video on Premier Pro I was able to put photos and video to show the viewer what I’m talking about. I also used adobe encoder as well.

ScriptHello my name is Eoin Kenny and I study media in Derry. In this video I’m going to talk about what I like to do outside of the course. I like to go to cinema to watch

EvaluationMy two minute video went really well because I like editing my videos on Premiere Pro. I also thought the class liked my video as well.

CopyrightI have used other people’s work in my video, however under Fair use I was able to use them for my video. I also highlight where I got my music from and video as well

The InterviewIn this task we had to interview another classmate. We went around the classroom and we asked people if they had someone to interview. In the interview asked Eoin Godfrey open questions to find out more things about him. After the Interview I got the cards from the three cameras in the studio then I went onto Finel cut. I was able to decide what shot would be the best for my video.

Pre ProductionIn the classroom we sit down and we came up with ideals for our film. We also had to write out a script for our film.  Our first movie was going to be about a meteor was going to hit the college creating an alien virus and everyone gets in affected. We went on the Internet and we looked at meteors, we looked at a meteor that hit Russia. My job was to create a meteor, I went on the Internet and I found the video of the meteor that hit Russia and I download the video. I also looked at the impact it caused in Russia. I went onto after effects. I found after effects very hard to use so I created another ideal where a student creates computer system where he creates AI and things start to happen in the college. In the classroom we looked at the script and we also had to plan out what shots we would

Page 8: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

need. We decided we would have a shot where someone will be walking so we would use a track that you put on the Camera on. Due to I had to stay home because I had come down with a cold. Eoin had to come with another film his ideal was that two students in the college and one of the students get hit. So they decided they will hack into Facebook and turn the bullies against each other.

ScriptWhile I was home I got an email from Eoin where he emailed me the script for his film. I got to look at his script and I thought it was a very good story and I liked it. Below is the script I got from Eoin

Bullied Script (Opening long shot of Seamus calling Paul from behind while walking into the college)

Seamus:Hi Paul!

(Paul turns around and sees him; they then proceed to have a chat.)

Paul:Hey man, how are things? Did you watch the newest

episode of Game of Thrones last night?

Seamus:Yeah, it was epic! I can’t believe that many people died!

(They are walking down the back stairs and the three bullies are walking up, they bump into Seamus and Paul and cause an altercation.)

Michael:Move it nerds!

 Andrew:

Watch it midget!

Page 9: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

 Paul:

Hey, what’s your problem? We were just going to class!

Sam:You’re the problem! (Punches Paul in the nose) Tell

ANYONE about this and you’re dead, got it? (It then shows Seamus in the bathroom cleaning Paul’s nose of the blood.)

Seamus:Man, can you believe those guys!

 Paul:

I’m fed up with all of this; this is the third time this week! We have to do something or else it’s going to get worse!

 Seamus:

What can we do? All we do is sit at our computers and program things!

(Suddenly, Paul gets a brilliant idea.)

Paul:Then that’s what we’ll do! We’ll create a program that will hack into their Facebook accounts and turn them against

each other!

Seamus:That’s a great idea, we can use their messenger app and get even Paul! We can use that to get payback for what

they did! (Seamus and Paul are sitting at a computer in a classroom developing the programme day and night.)

Seamus:Make sure that the ASPI is compatible with the adapter.

 Paul:

Page 10: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

Yes it would, when we hack into Facebook, they won’t be able to trace us.

 Seamus:

Make sure that all the coding is correct and that the Algorithm is tight. We can’t afford to be caught, but what

if it doesn’t work?

Paul:Trust me, it will work.

 Seamus:

But they can’t find out it’s us.

Paul:They won’t, this program will be untraceable.

(Hours later, they are finally finished.)

Paul:Seamus, I think I’ve finally got it.

 Seamus:

Great, let’s take it for a test drive. (Paul hacks into Michael’s Facebook to test it out and sends one of friends a message saying “Andrew, I was talking to your girlfriend last night and she said that she wants to go out with me instead of you, I just thought that you should know.”) Andrew:

WHAT? SHE SAID THAT? I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT!

Michael:Well I’m telling you what she said.

                                                (Paul and Seamus laugh.)

Seamus:Do another one!

Page 11: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

 Paul:

Ok! Ok! (Paul’s texts another message to Sam saying, “Sam, I was talking to Andrew and he said that you were mouthing off behind his back.”)

Sam:What are you talking about?

 Michael:

Well I was just talking to him there now and that’s what he said.

 Sam:

I’ll see him in the morning about that; he’s a liar! (Then Michael receives a message from Andrew, “I was talking to Sarah and she never said such as a thing. You’re a liar and I’ll see in the morning!”) (Michael replies by saying, “Well, if you don’t believe me, don’t believe me, but your girlfriends a big cheat! Look forward to showing you the morning.”) (Seamus and Paul high five each other.)

Seamus:Mission accomplished!

(The next morning, the two stand outside one of the college.) Andrew:

What was that all about last night?

Michael:What are you talking about?

Andrew:What am I talking about? Are you serious, you told me that

Page 12: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

my girlfriend wanted to go out with you instead of me! (He punches Michael.)

(Then Sam comes walking into the car-park.)

Sam:Hey Andy, leave him alone! I want words with you! (He

proceeds towards Andrew and grabs and puts him against the wall as Michael’s sitting on the ground.) You’re nothing but a storyteller spreading lies about me to other people!

(Final shot of Paul and Seamus walking past them, looking gloomy.)Seamus:You know what, we’re just like them…and that’s not right!

I don’t want to be a bully!

Paul:You’re right, but at least they’re hitting each other and not

us.

Seamus:It still doesn’t make it right Paul; I think we need to learn

our lesson now. (Cut to black.)

Filming We started filming the week before we got off for Halloween. We kept to Eoin’s filming schedule and on Friday we finished filming. Permission/Safety We didn't need any permission because we were filming in the college. As we were filming our video. We didn't really need to worry about health and safety issues but if we seen something on the floor we would remove it an example would be the wire for the camera.

Editing software We used final cut to edit our video. Eoin had uploaded the video onto his computer and we looked at our footage and we edit it together. We also decided what music would work for our video and which didn’t. I also did some editing work as well. In the scene below what happened was it was to short and the text on the screen was not long enough for people able to read. What I did was I went I got the original footage and I put the video into the timeline and I edited it. So that people would get enough time to read the text on the screen.

Review I thought Eoin’s film went really well and I liked the story I thought it was well put together.  We also got help from the classmates and they were a great help. I also like the finished project as well.

ND Media Production Y1 Semester 1U1: Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Market Research How Market research helps business

It’s important for a media company to do market research. Companies will have to decide how much the production is going to cost, labour, materials, production costs, CD or DVD manufacture and possibly print costs. It’s important to do market research first. This will help them understand what the customers or audience like or dislike about a production. It will also give them a clear idea what types of productions and services will bring them more profit. This will also give them a clear understanding what productions are already out there as well. Market research can also tell business if they are meeting the customers

Page 16: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

needs or not. Business can also find out if they need to change package design or production to suit the customer’s needs. They can also find out if they need to change their delivery methods and which is the best way to go about. They also have to come up with creative ideas; how to get more costumers.

Focus group If you were creating a movie for children you should do a focus group mostly is the target audience you are trying to target. This will give you opportunity to ask a verity of different questions to children’s parents to see what they think about the production. It will also give the parents an opportunity to give you feedback about the planned production. Whenever a new movie is coming out filmmakers will do a preview screening where they would get feedback from the audience. This is to see what the audience thinks about the movie and if any changes need to be made and you will able to see their reaction to the movie as well.

Knowing your competitors Before a media company brings their production out they will have to see what other productions that’s already out there. They also have seen what the target audience thinks of it and how it might be successful. The TV channels are also in competition with each other, and they all use market research to tell them what programming is best for them to make.

Reaching more AudienceProduction companies such as Pixar often do market research to understand what kind of issues their audience care about. This helps them to make movies that are more likely to be successful. As millions of people watch YouTube everyday. They can also upload a trailer onto YouTube this will help them to get more audiences. Whenever Pixar had upload their trailer on YouTube over 14,259,859 had watched their trailer. They knew the movie was going to be successful and they made $851.6 million at the box office. Media companies can also get more audiences through

Page 17: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

newspapers, magazines websites etc. It’s also important for media companies to not to upset their sponsors. In January 2007 as there was criticism from the public against Celebrity Big Brother. Car phone Ware House had redrawn their sponsorship because there was racism on the program. This is an example of where the makers of Big Brother did not understand the impact of the programme.

The Role of a Researcher.Media companies often employ their own researchers to do market research and also to do production research. For example when Channel 4 wanted to do a TV program on bizarre homes they had some staff to do research to find out if there were bizarre homes in the world. This research is used to help the programme maker understand more about the homes and how to make the programme. Also Radio shows will also have researcher to find out what stories are happening in the world such as war, crime and social issues. This way the host will have a clear understanding what the topic it's about and be able to ask questions to the interviewee about the topic.

If a newspaper wanted to write a news article on floods happening in the South of Ireland and England. They will need to some research into the floods such as who has been affected, homes lost, if anyone dead etc. They might do secondary research to find more specific information about the floods. They might also do primary research where they would do an interview with the government to find out what the government is going to do about it. The information that the Government give to the newspaper can be used to the write the article. They might also go to where the floods have happen and ask people about the floods and take pictures.

Source; BBC News

In one of our tasks we had to do an interview with an organisation. We had to go on the Internet and find out

Page 18: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

more things about them so when we go to our interview we will able to ask them questions on it

Media Productions Some companies would create movies to make profit. As making films is very expensive they will have to plan out how much they are going to spend on the film. Such as actors, props, crew, music creator etc. The movie King Kong that cost Hollywood $200 million to make, it also cost them $50 million to promote as well. It also cost $200 million for Disney to make Star Wars Force Awaking. Disney will need to do a lot of research into the last star wars films so they will have clear idea what this Force Awaking will look like and what is going to happen in the story. They can also get other companies to advertise their movie on lifestyle magazines and they can also put a trailer or teaser on the TV and YouTube as well. Disney will have to make sure that they get the story spot on. So when audiences see they will tell their friends about the film. Which it will get them more profit? Whenever the movie comes out in DVD they can also get profit from rental or if people buy the DVD.

Technology It’s also important for companies to research into Technology. As Technology often changes to better things it's also a good thing to find out what new technology is out there that you can use for your production.

Page 19: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

Audience SegmentationMedia companies would use audience segmentation to target their audience. This means they will use it to identify their audience. They put their audience into these categories Age, Gender, culture and their income. If a game developer wants to make a Call of Duty game they would target the guys. They also need to look at what age group do they want to sell this game to. They can target them by magazines and trailers. However females like to play war games as well. Before a media company makes their game it’s also highly important that they companies to look at Pegi organisation. They make sure that all movies computer games and videos are clearly having an age rating on the DVD cover.

Primary research and secondary research.

Primary research This means is doing a survey and going out to the public and asking them different questions. You can also do an interview over the phone as well.

SecondaryIf you wanted to get information on an advertising campaign you would do Secondary research this means getting data that already out they’re on the subject. Such as books and the Internet. It’s important that you read the report and you understand it.

The role of Market Research in Creative Media. There are two main forms of research undertaken by the media industries. The first is called market research and the second production research. Market research understands whether an audience might be interested in a particular production. Production research is about understanding the possibility of the production including costs and whether or not you have the necessary resources and technical skills to make the production. In one of our assignments we were going to make a movie about a meteor strike. But, when we did production

Page 20: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

research, we found that we did not have the ability to make that movie. Sometimes production companies do their own market research but often they get external expert companies to do the research for them. There are loads of companies who specialise in this kind of work. Market research can be quantitative, for example by sending out questionnaires to large numbers of people analysing the responses using statistics; or it can be qualitative, for example doing face-to-face interviews with people asking them more detailed questions such as a focus group.

Market research organisations.There are some organisations that specialise in doing market research for the media industry. These include;

BARB BARB will monitor peoples Homes in the UK. The BBC and other Independent TV broadcasters use this organisation. What BARB does is whenever someone is watching a TV show like The Apprentice. BARB will monitor how many people are watching the TV show. Day or night they collect data on which channels are been watched as well. As 25 million households watch TV, BARB will also do a breakdown on which type of people are watching them. This will also give BBC a clear understanding on how many people are watching the TV show and they will also able to decided if they need to pull a TV show of the air.

The National Readership Survey Whenever someone reads a newspaper or a magazine. If

Derry Journal wanted to know who is reading their newspaper. What this organisation does is they will provide a breakdown where they would put people into categories such as gender, age etc. This will give them a clear understanding what they need to target. This will also help agencies if they were going to buy or sell productions.

Radio Joint Research LimitedThis organisation was set up in 1992; they are audience

measurement system where they see how many

Page 21: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

people are listing to the radio. They work with BBC and other radio stations.

Quantitative ResearchYou would use quantitative research into people’s opinions and their views on the production. It’s also important for media companies to do research to find what people think about film or TV show. It will also give them a clear understanding what people think about the movie. It’s also important to ask the right questions so you will get good answers.

I have got a Facebook page where people can join my Facebook page. As you can see from this diagram Facebook allows me to see how many people liked my Facebook page, people viewed my page, comments, shares etc. It also allows me to see how many people have clicked on my photos.

I have also got a YouTube channel where I upload videos. This diagram at the side shows me how many people have viewed my channel and how many subscribers.

Page 22: eoinkennymedia.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewI have a camera and a tripod and I was able to go home and work on my video at the weekend. I used Premier Pro to edit my video because

ND Creative Media Production Y1Semester 1: 2013-2014U31: Social Action & Community Media Production

Social ActionWhat’s the purpose of social action? You can use social media to change the world. You can do a local topic, national or international topic. Whenever you feel that there is a topic that people need to know and be aware with. As people world use Internet everyday. You can use social media such as YouTube and web sites to get more people aware and show them your issues. If people have watched your video it may shock them and force that change. There’s a verity of different options you can chose from such as to end all Wars, drugs, polities, human rights, smoking etc.

Fixers If someone feels that they need to fix a problem in the world such as crime, drugs, end all wars etc. They can go to a Social action group called Fixers. They would work with them and listen to them. They would put a creative team behind it as well. They would work with young people where they insure that their voice is hared.

To date, more than 18,250 Fixers from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland have started - and are continuing - 2,040 unique projects and 785 Fixers projects have been showcased on ITV, UTV and STV regional news programmes across the country, providing more than 50 hours of peak-time exposure to their projects.

People can go onto Websites such as Youtube and watch a presidential debate. Where candidates where they would talk about a topic and there views on it. This will help people to decide whom they want to vote for.

My Hero• In one of the assignments we had to choose a person

who did something good in the world and we also had to talk them during the class. We also have to make a power point presentation as well. I had picked person who is trying to change the world and made a change. I picked malala I had go on the Internet and find out more things about her such as what’s she did and what happened to her. On 12 July 1997 Malala was born in a town in Pakistan. Her father also had founded the school and was against the Taliban efforts to stop girls from going to school. Her father had advocated for education in Pakistan. Malala also loved going to school and she shared her father’s passion for education. At aged 11 she stood up against the Talban. In 2009 she started writing a blog to the BBC about live under the Taliban rule and the threats that was made against her. She wanted every girl to get education in schools in Pakistan. On October 9, 2012 while she was at school, the Taliban shot her in the head. She was rushed to a hospital and she survived. Then they transported her to UK for special treatment.
