How to Use this GuideCONNECT W/YOUR KIDSTake a few minutes when you first sit down together with your children to pray and chat about something real-life. Let them see you as human and striving to live your best Catholic life right alongside them. If you’re not sitting down for lessons with your child, you could have this conversation over a meal or in the car—just about anytime, really!

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER1) Read through the chapter (together ideally, or independently) OR opt to use the online

program. Consider yourself warned that it is technologically out of date—you won’t be impressed by the program. But the content is there and its all fine to use in a pinch or if you can’t possibly squeeze in the together time elsewhere. After reading or working through the lesson, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them. This mental work to articulate what they just studied is what will help it to stick.

For the student new to listening and responding (commonly referred to as narrating), have them only read one section at a time before commenting. They may grow towards being able to narrate the whole chapter, or may continue working in small sections. Either is fine!

You might have them write their summary OR speak it aloud to you while you record it so you have a record of the year’s content. We’ve chosen not to provide workbooks this year as often times that kind of wrote engagement doesn’t leave as lasting an impression as wrestling with a section of text in whatever way speaks to your particular child.

Invite them to add to their commonplace book anything they would like to remember from this lesson—things like scripture verses, catechism references, or details about or sketches of art they found inspiring. Commonplace books were common devices used for hundreds of years before the internet—a sort of pinterest board or Instagram before those were things-- and for the written word instead of visuals. Many famous presidents and writers have used this tool to record impactful thoughts and to keep a record of their study. Simply the act of taking the time to painstakingly write something down does wonders to help it stick. We recognize this is likely a new exercise for most, but invite both parents and children to try it—and to trust the process.

2) Only one part of our role as parents and church passing on the faith from one generation to the next is intellectual understanding. The other crucial part is figuring out what it has to do with our lived lives. The questions and discussion points in this section are meant to help you think more deeply about the material in the text, and to challenge your kids to do something about it, in the way they live as Catholics. These also can be used as part of a time set-aside for lessons, or incorporated into family life elsewhere.

**Consider keeping the Parent Guide by a breakfast or dinner table to pull out as you sit down to eat. Pick a question to talk about now and again; or a “Pick 2 Activity” to try before anyone is excused.

You Pick 2This section is full of further ideas for engaging with the material in a wide variety of ways, to suit all kinds of learners, and folks with all kinds of interests. It is the “how-to” give your kids a close-up encounter with the face of Christ. This is really the heart of this year. The content in the book and online is great, so far as it goes. The ideas here is what will bring the faith alive. We hope you’ll give it some priority attention, fitting it into your family life wherever you can. One on a weekend here, another on a day off there, a few others before bedtime or elsewhere as a regular part of your weekly rhythm. The goal is 2 each week. You might even give one to your child as an assignment when they have some downtime they’re not sure what to do with!

Here are a few of the many types of activities you can expect to see, and a little additional guidance on how to implement them…

ReadReadings will most often be about a saint or a scripture. We recommend each family acquire a great anthology of saints lives appropriate for children. We can recommend Glory Story CDs (as a set, a significant investment, or you may choose to buy one here or there over a number of years); and Once Upon a Time Saints (3 volumes, much more cost effective, and with really interesting and lively versions of the stories!). When a saint is recommended, you simply look him or her up… or find an online snippet to share about them. Google works too—just look for hits from catholic.org OR franciscanmedia.org OR loyolapress.com.

If you’re reading a scripture passage, and we hope you do often, try the ancient method of Lectio Divina. There is one short guide here: https://bustedhalo.com/ministry-resources/lectio-divina-beginners-guide and if you’d like a longer read, Fr Basil Pennington’s small book titled Lectio Divina is excellent.

If you choose to read no further than here, just try a simplified version…

1) Light a candle. 2) Invite the holy spirit to come. 3) Then read the passage. (Invite the people listening to close their eyes while you do--just helps

block out distractions!)4) Consider any words or phrases that stood out to you. Share amongst any who are listening.5) Then read again. Listen. 6) Consider why God may be bringing this to your attention. 7) And then read a last time. 8) Consider whether there is anything God may want you to do as a result of your listening.

Simple yet so meaningful. An exercise your kids will keep with them and value through life.

MemorizeA scripture verse and catechism questions from the back of each lesson in the text are included each week. Your child has the option of working toward memorization of either or both of these. Occasionally a prayer will also be suggested for memorization. It’s truly AMAZING how easy memory work comes to little minds. You know they so easily pick up all the lyrics to the songs on the radio; why not challenge them to try something different?

The three children from each grade who memorized the most scripture verses at the end of the year will be invited to a celebration and recognition dinner with Monsignor Royal and the other clergy. Like wise for those who are able to write accurate answers to the most catechism questions.

MakeSome weeks there will be recommendations for crafts or projects for those whose forte is hands-on. Feel free to make these as basic or pinterest-worthy as you and your child are inspired to do—no pressure. Just the act of thinking about and engaging with the material, especially for a more kinesthetic learner, is valuable. Trust the process.

SingFor some this is a total stretch, and if that’s you, skip this one. If, however, music is your thing, don’t be afraid to sit in your living room—or your car!—and sing an old familiar or completely new hymn with your kiddos. You can google the title and many options will come up—instead of singing, you may just listen to a beautiful rendition sung by someone else. There are lots of these available on YouTube. Plug in and enjoy!

Reflect (Picture Study)The concept of Picture Study has been popularized by British educator Charlotte Mason. It is an exercise of close and intentional looking at a great work of art. In the case of the pictures we will recommend this year, it may also be a prayerful encounter with the person of Christ. The process is very simple and you and your child will likely both quickly come to enjoy spending a few minutes doing it.

First, have your child look carefully at the image. Ask them to notice as many things as they can about the painting. Then have them close their books.

Invite them to tell you all about what they’ve seen. What do they think the image is depicting? Let them paint a picture with words, including as much as they can remember.

Then look at the image again. Notice any details you may have missed the first time. Talk about them, and whether or why they might matter.

Lastly, share the title, artist, and/or any pertinent details about the painting, as provided in the guide.

You may choose to end your time in prayer. Your child may choose to try to re-create the image; or to write about it in his or her commonplace.

Closing NoteThis year is not about perfection. And it’s not for competition or comparison. As you know, children grow in their own time. Some crawl earlier and others later; some read earlier and others later; some can sit through a conversation with no problem and others wiggle (try your lessons with your child on a trampoline, or laying flat on the floor!); some will make a frameable cardboard creation and others you will be embarrassed not to slip into the trash—and all of these things are ok! Your child is beautiful, just as he or she is. The many ideas you will find herein are simply to help you engage with the faith in fresh ways this year so that at the end of it, your child may know the beautiful heart of Christ more deeply. Nothing else matters. So please, before you jump in, breathe a sigh of relief. Try to stretch yourself a little, into unknown territory. Try something new. Stretch your child. But not too thin. Healthy, whole, Christ-like adults is what we’re looking to grow. Be gentle and positive; your enthusiasm (or lackthereof!) will be contagious.

Lesson 1: I Believe“The synthesis of faith was not made to accord with human opinions, but rather what was of the greatest importance was gathered from all the Scriptures, to present the one teaching of the faith in it’s entirety. And just as the mustard seed contains a great number of branches in a tiny grain, so too this summary of faith encompassed in a few words the whole knowledge of the true religion contained in the Old and New Testaments.”

Faith is a supernatural gift from God.

We have the ability to accept or reject the gift of faith.

o Do you believe everything that you hear? o Is there any particular mystery of God that is difficult for you to believe? o What should we do if we are having difficulty believing in one of the mysteries of God? o What are some things that have caused your faith in God to increase? o What should we do if we know our faith has been weakened? o What can you do to keep your faith strong?

God reveals himself to us in many ways and gives us the gift of faith to believe in him.

We can know God exists through Reason and through Faith. God has made himself known to us through divine revelation—Scripture, Tradition, and most perfectly through Christ himself.

o Do you believe mostly through Reason, through faith, or both?

The Creed is what we believe in our Catholic Faith.

Each time we profess the Creed, we will grow stronger in our faith because some of the truths are deep mysteries that cannot always be reasoned.

o Have you ever been entrusted to watch over or keep something very valuable? The truths of our Creed have been entrusted to us as Catholics. We are called to guard and protect these truths. What does that mean to you?

CHALLENGEChoose something from the list of things you can do to keep your faith strong and spend some extra time doing it this week!

YOU PICK 2Read about Saint Therese of Lisieux.

Research some of St Thomas Aquinas’ proofs for the existence of God. Do any of these help foster faith?

Talk to someone you know who has a very strong faith. Ask them how it got to be that way.

Discuss the importance of living out the Creed, as opposed to just reciting it. What are some ways we can live out our faith? Make a list.

Pray the Apostles Creed slowly and deliberately. Ask God for the faith to believe more deeply.

Read each tenant of the Creed about God and about Man, asking whether you believe it? If not, pursue greater understanding. If so, thank God for that gift of faith.

Memorize 1 Corinthians 16:13.

Memorize the Catechism answers on page 13 & 14.

Sing Faith of Our Fathers

Look at the artwork on page 12. Make your own re-creation or written reflection based on it.

This painting is titled The Miraculous Draught of Fishes

Jesus said to Peter, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch… Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men” (Luke 5:4, 10). For the Apostles who had been out fishing all night without any luck, it takes great faith to drop their nets in response to Jesus’ command. Each of us is called to place our faith in Christ and not be afraid.

Imagine that you had been out all night fishing and had caught nothing. Then Jesus tells you to go back out and lower your nets.

Do you think the Apostles went back out because they had faith in Jesus?

How much faith would it take you to lower your nets again?

Have you ever been asked to do something that was difficult, but you really believed in it and persevered?

Lesson 2: Creator of Heaven & Earth“God created the world to show forth and communicate his glory. That his creatures should share in his truth, goodness, and beauty—this is the glory for which God created them.”

God is eternal and is three Divine Persons.

We know by reason that God exists and by faith that he is one God in three Persons. Through creation we know and experience his goodness and his trinitarian love.

o Think of some things—like St Patrick’s three-leafed clover—that are three, yet one.o If God is all holy, all loving, and all merciful, and we are made in his image, how should we act?

Talk about ways to be holy and to show love and mercy in daily living.

God created everything out of nothing, to show forth his love and goodness.

God created everything, including us, and creation shows us his glory.

o Think about how all the parts of creation work; how tiny atoms hold together to make substances; how plants grow; how the organs of the human body work in harmony together. Have you ever thought about how complex these things are?

God cares for his creation, and we share in this responsibility through stewardship.

o Name some of the things that God has created and given you. o How can we care well for these things, showing that we receive them with gratitude? o How can we be good stewards of the world around us and of our own selves?

If you’re doing a sit-down lesson together, pray as you feel led in light of what you’ve experienced.

CHALLENGEDo a “stewardship project” this week, taking particular care of one thing—or person, or yourself—in a special way. Spend some extra time with a pet, start a recycling or trash-pickup project, take an extra careful shower and do your hair extra nicely afterwards.

YOU PICK 2Read about Saint Patrick OR Saint Francis of Assisi.

Write a letter of gratitude to God for his creation, including the gifts he has given you personally, such as your talents and the people you love.

Review the attributes of God and look up the Scripture verses that illustrate them:

o All holy (Isaiah 6:3)o Almighty (Amos 5:8)o All knowing (Psalm 139)o Eternal (Revelation 4:8)o Unchanging (Psalm 102:25-27)o All present (Psalm 139:7-10)

Journal (draw or write) about parts of creation for which you are thankful.

Discuss how your family can reflect the love of the trinity. Make a list of ways the members of your family can love each other better.

Read the poem The Beauty of Creation Bears Witness to God by St Augustine in the yellow box on p. 22.

Memorize John 14:26.

Memorize the Catechism answers on page 17-19.

Sing Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

The focus of this lesson, the Trinity, is the emphasis of the detail shown in this work of art. We see the Father (crowned), the Son and the Holy Spirit (symbolized as a dove) working together as one God, yet three distinct persons of the Blessed Trinity. This painting is entitled Mary, Queen of Heaven because as you can see, the Trinity is preparing to enthrone Mary as the Queen of Heaven with the crown.

Think about God’s vastness and greatness, about the fact that every star is known to him. He is vast and great, but he knows every part of creation, including all of our hearts, and he wants us to love him and share in his life.

Lesson 3: Realm of the Angels“Become familiar with the angels; for without being seen, they are present with you. Pray often to them, praise them constantly, and use their aid and assistance in all your affairs.”

Angels are pure spirits, created to love and serve God.

Angels love and serve God perfectly, of their own free will. However, some of the angels used their free will to choose not to love and serve God.

o Have you ever considered before whether you believe in angels?

The angels were tested, and some of them rebelled against God and are called demons.

A person cannot love God if he is not free also to choose not to love him. Love can only truly exist as an act of a free will.

o How is Lucifer’s choice different from the choices we make? o What does this teach us about God’s love? o The angels were judged by their free choice. What are some free choices that you could make

and put into action to show that you love God?

Each of us has been given a guardian angel.

We can depend on them to protect us and guide us. We should ask them to help us to resist sin and to follow God’s will.

o What is God’s purpose for our lives? o How could angels use their powers to help this happen?

Read Revelation 12:7-17 aloud. Light a candle while you listen. Close your eyes. Read it 2 or 3 times. Does anything strike you as important, helpful, or challenging?

Look up and read about the Nine Choirs of Angels according to St Thomas of Aquinas.

Read some of the following passages about visits from the angels… Genesis 22:1-19; Judges 13:1-14; Tobit 5:1-6 and Tobit 12; Luke 1:5-23; Luke 1:26-38; Luke 2:8-20; Matthew 2:13-23; Acts 12:1-11

Think about the power of the angels in this painting, and how he brings light to the dark circumstances of Peter’s imprisonment. The angels serve God and bring his goodness and light where they go. Here we see the angels releasing Peter from prison.

Man is created with a body and soul and is given gifts.

God created Adam & Eve in his image, in a state of grace, and they were perfectly happy.

God tested man, and man fell from grace.

By their own choice, Adam & Eve broke their relationship with God and were ejected from the Garden of Eden, but God’s goodness and providence can answer any evil.

o What are some examples of how sin damages our relationship with God? With others? With the world around us?

God promised to send a Savior.

God will only allow evil if a better good comes from it.

o Why does God allow bad things to happen? o Can you think of a time in your life or in the world today when something good came from

Meditate on Jesus’s victory over death on the cross, and the continuing victory over sin and death that is accomplished in each of our lives as we receive the grace of the sacraments.

Make a list of virtues and how we can display them by our daily choices. (gratitude, kindness, obedience, orderliness, patience, honesty, moderation, respect, sincerity, modesty, prayerfulness, self-control)

This painting shows the horror of what God asked Abraham to do and the significance o his obedience in being willing to sacrifice his son. It also shows God’s mercy: the angel stops Abraham’s hand to indicate that God is pleased by his obedience and that God will not require Abraham to sacrifice his son.

Saint Dominic adores Jesus as he offers the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus is the perfect sacrifice because he is God, whose blood alone took away the sins of the world. It is through this sacrifice that we are able to receive the blood of Christ in the Eucharist. In the Holy Mass, this sacrifice becomes present to us.

Jesus descends into hell to free the souls of the just who had been deprived of the vision of God after they died. After the sin of Adam and Eve until Jesus died on the Cross, no one was able to enter heaven. Jesus dies on the Cross, descends into hell (to release these souls), and rises from the dead on the third day, and the gates of heaven are opened. Here se see Jesus crushing the head of Satan, who brought death into the world, and releasing the prophets and forefathers. Lesson 18: The Mystical BodyGod the Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son, and the gift of the Father and the Son to the Church at Pentecost. We receive him and his gifts in Baptism and Confirmation.
