15th June, Friday 9:00 AM to 16th June, Saturday 5:00 PM 2018

Organizing Church

Church at Wallajah

Pravaham, Balamathi Hills

Vellore, TAMIL NADU

The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as a ruler over His people… 1 Samuel 13:14

“An army of sheep led by a lion is more powerful than an army of lions led by a sheep “

-Arab proverb

Mk. 10:45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

1 Tim. 2:11

It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.

Rom. 12:8

……He who leads, with diligence……….

Eph. 4:11-13

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,  for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;  until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

Ez. 22:30

“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.

Ez. 34:6

My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, with none to search or seek for them.

Heb. 13:7-8

Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

1 Pet.5:2-4

Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Jim George

God will one day bury you-His workman.

Your physical life will come to an end. But your influence will not end. God’s workman will be gone, but God’s work will go on.

God’s man of influence

Oswald Sanders

Leadership is influence, the ability of one person to influence others

Spiritual leadership

Unknown

The hope of the world is church,

And the hope of the church is its leaders…

Henry & Richard Blackaby

Spiritual leadership is moving people on to God’s agenda.

Spiritual leadership

John R Mott

A leader is a man who knows the road, who can keep ahead, and who pulls others after him-

Spiritual leadership

Robert Clinton

The central task of leadership is influencing God’s people toward God’s purposes.

The Making of a Leader

Harry S Truman (American President)

A leader is a person who has the ability to get others to do what they don’t want to do, and like it

Watchman Nee

If God dares to entrust His authority to men, then we can dare to obey. Whether the one in authority is right or wrong does not concern us, since he has to be responsible directly to God…

English Songs:

5 |Leadership Workshop June 15-16, 2018 Pravaham, Vellore,TAMIL NADU

1. Stand up for Jesus Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross! Lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory his army he shall lead, till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up! stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey;Forth to the mighty conflictIn this His glorious day.Ye that are men, now serve HimAgainst unnumbered foes;Let courage rise with danger. And strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone; the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the gospel armour, each piece put on with prayer, when duty calls or danger be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long;this day the noise of battle, the next the victor's song.To him that overcometha crown of life shall be;he with the King of gloryshall reign eternally.

2. How Great is Our God

The splendor of our King, clothed in majestyLet all the earth rejoiceAll the earth rejoice

He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hideAnd trembles at His voiceTrembles at His voice

How great is our God, sing with meHow great is our God, and all will seeHow great, how great is our God

Age to age He standsAnd time is in His handsBeginning and the endBeginning and the end

The Godhead Three in OneFather Spirit SonThe Lion and the LambThe Lion and the Lamb

Name above all namesWorthy of our praiseMy heart will singHow great is our God

3. The Servant King

From heav’n You came, helpless Babe, Entered our world, Your glory veiled; Not to be served but to serve, And give Your life that we might live.

This is our God, the Servant King, He calls us now to follow Him, To bring our lives as a daily offering Of worship to the Servant King.

There in the garden of tears, My heavy load He chose to bear; His heart with sorrow was torn, ‘Yet not my will but Yours,’ He said.

Come see His hands and His feet The scars that speak of sacrifice; Hands that flung stars into space To cruel nails surrendered.

So let us learn how to serve, And in our lives enthrone Him; Each other’s needs to prefer, For it is Christ we’re serving.

4. I know whom I have believed

I know not why God’s wondrous graceTo me He hath made known,Nor why, unworthy, Christ in loveRedeemed me for His own.

But “I know Whom I have believed,And am persuaded that He is ableTo keep that which I’ve committedUnto Him against that day.”

I know not how this saving faith To me He did impart, Nor how believing in His Word Wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves,Convincing men of sin,Revealing Jesus through the Word,Creating faith in Him.

I know not what of good or illMay be reserved for me,Of weary ways or golden days,Before His face I see.

I know not when my Lord may come,At night or noonday fair,Nor if I walk the vale with Him,Or meet Him in the air.

5. People need the Lord

Every day they pass me byI can see it in their eyesEmpty people filled with careHeaded who knows whereOn they go through private painLiving fear to fearLaughter hides their silent criesOnly Jesus hears

People need the Lord People need the LordAt the end of broken dreamsHe’s the open doorPeople need the LordPeople need the LordWhen will we realizePeople need the Lord

We are called to take His lightTo a world where wrong seems rightWhat could be too great a cost forSharing life with one who’s lostThrough His love our hearts can feelAll the grief they bearThey must hear the words of lifeOnly we can share

6. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tow’r:Raise Thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heav’n’s Sun!Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

7. Take Time to be Holy

Take time to be holy, speak oft with the Lord;Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.By looking to Jesus, like Him you will be;Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy, let Him be your Guide; And run not before Him, whatever betide. In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.

Take time to be holy, be calm in your soul,Each thought and each motive beneath His control. Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love, You soon will be fitted for service above.

Bible Study Camp at Pravaham , June 15-16, 2018

8.Purify my heart, Let me be as gold and precious silver.Purify my heart, Let me be as gold, pure gold.

Refiner's fire, My heart's one desireIs to be... holy; Set apart for You, Lord.I choose to be... holy; Set apart for You, my Master, Ready to do Your will.

Purify my heart, Cleanse me from withinAnd make me holy.Purify my heart, Cleanse me from my sin, deep within.

The pursuit of leadership

Genesis contains the 350 years history of 4 leaders in 39 chapters compared to the history of world for about 3000 years in 11 chapters. Exodus is the history of what Moses did than the history of Israel as a nation. The book of Samuel is the history of Samuel and David.

Elijah and Elisha played vital role during the kings’ rule though there were many prophets.

The book of Acts is the history of what Peter and Paul did than the other apostles.

It is known that the history of Netherlands for 75 years was the history of Abraham Kuyper-the theologian cum prime minister. No historian of 18th century England can omit the name of John Wesley who changed the nation. During John Calvin’s time Geneva was knows as the most idealistic city after apostles time

People always long for good leaders-Israel wanted to have a king to lead them.

In future the world will look for a leader and that sets the scene for Anti Christ.

What the church also lacks today is right leadership.

How Hannah prayed for a man to lead the nation!

Many times we pray for evangelism, mission, salvation of people, church growth etc. - When was the last time we prayed to God to raise good spiritual leaders in our country?

In some way all believers need to lead someone else- in home, church, school etc.

Who is a leader?

Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and character which inspires confidence- Bernard Montgomery (1887-1976) (British Commander II World war)

There are only three kinds of people- those who are immovable, those who are movable, and those who move them- Li Hung Chang (1823-1901)(Chinese military leader)

A leader is a person who has the ability to get others to do what they don’t want to do, and like it – Harry S Truman (1884 – 1972) American President

A leader is a man who knows the road, who can keep ahead, and who pulls others after him- John R Mott (1865-1955) President of Y M C A.

Leadership is influence, the ability of one person to influence others-Oswald Sanders (Spiritual leadership)

The central task of leadership is influencing God’s people toward God’s purposes-Robert Clinton (The making of a Leader)

Biblical leadership is the art and science of getting things done through the people trusting in God. The best biblical examples are Moses, Nehemiah, Paul, etc.

The pursuit of leadership

God seeks for His leaders

It is pain for God’s heart if there is no one to shepherd his people Eze 34:6

God was willing to save the city if there is someone Jer 5:1

Church looks for better methods, God is looking for better man!

Hope of the world is church and hope of church is its leaders!

Spiritual leadership is not filling an office, but an appointment by God

He chooses the leaders, trains them and commission them.

Man should aspire leadership

Normally ambition for position is wrong.

Because it is natural to have self-centered desires. Jer. 45:5

But God wants us to desire the position of leading God’s people 1 Tim. 3:1

What do you expect in a leader?

1. The power of conviction

Give me 26 lead soldiers and I will conquer the world-Benjamin Franklin

It is convictions that conquered the world.

Acts 20:24 His life is not guided by opinion or ideas, but conviction in heart.

Right doctrine =Right thinking =Right living= Right character

2. A life to be followed Acts 20:18-19, 1 Cor 11:1 , Phil: 4:9

‘Do not look at me, but look at Jesus’ That is what the common saying

Leadership is a model to be copied.

3. He need to be goal oriented than task oriented

Our Lord had an ultimate goal that was driving Him during the busy years of ministry. Many leaders are lost in tasks and assignments.

4. He need to see individuals in the masses/programmes

2 Cor. 2:12-13, Phil 2:27 We should never miss trees in the forest

Use people and make money/wealth-that is the way of the world

Conclusion

Spiritual Leadership is the greatest need our time!

Mat 9:36 Are we able to see the need in the crowd around us?

Jud. 17:5 Are we like Mica making temporary substitutes?

CHRISTLIKE TEAM MINISTRY PG

(A Courageous Holy Effort to accomplish God’s mission in God’s way)

a. INTRODUCTION

· Abundant fruit bearing is the God ordained way to Glorify our Heavenly Father. (John.15:8)

· Jesus Christ is the person who won the First prize in Glorifying our Heavenly father by bearing much fruit in His lifestyle and His ministry method.

· In this century, if anyone wants to glorify God in his lifestyle, ministry, or the leadership pattern; the wisest and safest model is to follow The Christ (i.e.) Christlike Team

Ministry.

· Jesus Christ with His small team, changed the whole world upside down. Knowingly or unknowingly many godly men followed the pattern of the Christlike team ministry and

glorified The Father in an excellent manner.

· Today, we all want to bear much fruit in our ministries with the help of The Holy Spirit. Let us learn the same leadership principles to bear much fruit and glorify our Father

through our ministry also.

AI. DEFINITION

A small group of born again believers join and act together to accomplish the Christlikeness

among the sinful human beings with the help of the Holy Spirit in the context of mutual love, mutual encouragement, mutual edification, mutual respect, mutual correction, mutual forgiveness for the Glory of God without any self pride and self promotion.

· He sent His team into the whole world with His resurrected power.

IV.RESULT

1. He accomplished the will of His father

2. His saving mission still continues even after 2000 years.

3. He bore much fruit and glorified His heavenly Father.

V. GOD’S MANDATORY IN OUR LIFE

We need to:

1. Accomplish the will of our Heavenly father.

2. Fulfill our part in the Lord’s saving mission in this world.

3. Bear much fruit and glorify our Father.

If Jesus Himself chose the team ministry in order to accomplish God’s mission in His life, then for us, what else is there other than “Christlike team ministry”

Biblical models on leadership SJN

Leadership challenges todayPPC

Introduction

We could interpret the question in two ways as needed, and both are connected.

a. What are the challenges to become a spiritual leader in our times? and

b. What are the challenges that spiritual leaders face in our times?

Practical Challenges

· Materialistic world: development, gadgets, high paid jobs at a young age; People are after money.

· Highly competitive education and work. Overtime. No time for God’s work.

· Information explosion - Internet. Youtube videos - good and bad teachings. Youth learns virtually and challenges the leaders in the church. No submission, no respect of authority.

· Rampant Immorality - Media is pushing immoral lifestyles; Homosexuality, Bisexuality, Pornography, Gender confusions, Desensitized society.

· …and so many more to list...

These practical challenges are not the central challenges. These are new forms of the old problems. Ecclesiastes 1:9 - That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.

“The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.”

Fix the central challenges and the practical challenges would be overcome.

Central Challenges

· Seeking the Saviour

· We find Self-Seeking “Saints”

· Phil 2:19-23; Paul says the sad truth about the Christians around him except Timothy.

· We need Saviour-Seeking Saints

· John 21:15-17; Shepherding/Leading due to our love for the Lord.

· Compare Mat 6:33 with Lk 12:29-31 – seek first the kingdom of God doesn’t mean you could seek your kingdom later.

· Passionate Parenting

· We find People-Pleasing Preachers

· We need Passionate and Compassionate Parents

· 1 Corinthians 4:15; Paul was a parent first

· Worldly vs Spiritual Leaders: Fragile vs Firm Family Foundations

· Imparting instead of Imposing

· Deut 20:8 - Your heart’s state could/would be imparted. (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:33)

· Deut 1:38 - The importance of encouragement

· We find leaders who Dictate and Discourage

· We need leaders who Communicate Confidence

· The true measure of leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less - John C. Maxwell

· A life of faith. Experiencing God’s goodness in our own life situations.

· Leading like the Lord

· Servant-leadership

· We Lack Leaders like the Lord.

· We need Lovers and Leaders like the Lord

· John 13:1 - ...having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Conclusion

The challenge: Let the living waters overflow/SPILL (John 7:38). SPILL - Seeking, Parenting, Imparting and Leading like the Lord.

Qualities on Leadership RA

It is not the ability but availability that God looks

It is not the intelligence, but attitude that matters

NT teaches of the delegated leadership in church. Not Auto crazy or Democracy, but Theocracy!

What is the NT pattern of leadership?

Elder (presbytros-mature) =Bishop (Episkopos-overseer) =Pastor (Poimen-protect/lead)

Deacon (Diakonos-servant)

Leadership should be visible (Heb 12:6, 13:7)- He takes care of soul better profession than a doctor or professor! But who wants to be a shepherd!

Leadership is to be raised locally-Plurality of leadership is important.

Age or educational, professional qualification or social status is not the criteria for church leadership

This is a true saying, if a man desires the office of a bishop, he desire a good work (1 Tim 3:1).

Good =Ergon- unit of energy. It requires to spent lot of energy and time for effective leadership. There is no holiday or vacation for spiritual leaders.

The qualities elders and deacons are the qualities expected in every Christian except two things- Not a recent convert and ability to teach.

The qualities expected in Ephesus (An old church) and Crete (New churches) are same.

What is the qualification he needs?

A. A great desire for it! ( Compare Jer 45:5)- What is the context of this verse?

Today men and woman are after the success in profession and life.

No one is bothered about even spiritual things itself.

Some desires positions with no character and some have character but no desires- It is right to desire to have position to serve God and His people!

OT never gives a choice for all believers to aspire the leadership or spiritual gifts!

B. A sublime character (Desire alone not enough!)

World is looking for abilities than the character.

Abilities can be earned through training and experience.

Not secular degree or Social status that is making a leader.

Character is to be cultivated through the power God’s spirit, thorough circumstances.

Abilities and gifts are important for a leader. Men with character can do more!

Functional qualifications

a. Desire to serve

It is not because somebody nominated!

It is not because born in the family of elders.

b. Able to teach-zeal for reaching and teaching word (Not church constitution/rules/OT stories)

This is the only quality that distinguish an elder in a church

It is not the Bible knowledge-Bible college degree-preaching ability.

It is the ability to communicate God’s truth.

It can be through public preaching or private training/counseling

c. Not a recent convert- not newly planted

Today people jump over to new church to become a leader

It requires some time for a believer to become mature

But time or age alone doesn’t guarantee maturity

It also doesn’t mean that an elder should be white haired!

d. Good testimony among outsiders

World is waiting to catch us! Are we paying taxes, keeping promises, return borrowed items

Family Qualifications

a. Husband of one wife

This comes in the top-An important issue all the time

Opposite is not applicable- No woman pastor!

He is not connected to any other woman emotionally, physically or even in thought life.

Should be married-No

Shouldn’t be married – No

Can never re-marry-No

b. Manage his own household-basic needs to be met, develop skills of wife and children

Submissive wife and obedient children.

Autocratic, heavy handed rule and selfish life.

Moral Qualifications

a. Above reproach (greedy for money, lazy, not caring home..)

b. Sober minded-healthy not emotional

c. Self-controlled-tongue, time, body

d. Respectable-manners, dress, orderly life

e. Hospitable- love for strangers

f. Gentle-calm heart in problems

g. A lover of good-appreciative

h. Upright-

i. Holy

j. Disciplined

k. Not a drunkard (overeating!)

l. Not violent-strike with doctrine

m. Not quarrelsome

n. Not a lover of money

o. Not arrogant-self willed

p. Not quick tempered

What are the qualifications of deacons? How it is different from elders

What are the roles of the wives of leaders?

Conclusion

Leading God’s people is the noblest profession in the word as he cares the soul and it can influence the eternity.

Personal Reflections

1. Do you think independently?

2. Can you handle criticism?
