Peoria Pioneer Lions help make a Marine Corp Vet life a little easier.

David had lost part of his eye sight in a work injury several years ago. He was still able to drive and do all the normal things until recently. He developed cancer and the treatment for the cancer has caused his vision to blur and David became legally blind. The Peoria Pioneer Lions club heard of David’s vision issue through members, Lions Paul and Ellen Yopps. They obtained a vision viewer from the Lions Foundation of Arizona in Phoenix for David to use. This vision viewer magnifies printed material 50X. Pictured is David using the viewer with Lions Paul and Ellen Yopps. David was like a kid in a candy store being able to read the Independent Newspaper and other printed material including his Ipad. Peoria Pioneer Lions are happy to help bring the gift of sight to this Marine Corp Vet.

FREE TREATS!Did you know that when you serve as a

district or multiple district officer, you attend various meetings where there are FREE TREATS?! It’s true. I’ve participated in meetings where there have been bowls of hard candies or chocolate bars. A time or two people have made and shared homemade baked goods. Pizza and donuts are common snacks I see at meetings. . On time, there was even a self-serve ice cream sundae bar. A few years ago, then-DG Barbara Daily visited my club and brought a cake; we still talk fondly about it today.

Something my years of service in Lions Clubs has taught me is that Lions really like treats. Common sense would seem to dictate that members would be lining up to be officers, because that’s where the treats are. Strangely, this is not the case. There currently exist a few leadership vacancies in the district. Other

positions are filled by wonderful Lions, but only after a lot of persuasion (aka badgering). Recently, both districts in Arizona elected leaders who have previously served in the same positions. Clearly, the decision to seek or accept a leadership position is based on far more serious concerns than sugar and carbohydrates.

As of today, there are 2744 Lions in Arizona (an increase of 35 since July 1) available to fill positions at the district level. A few positions require specific experience, but most committee positions only require that you be a member in good standing and have a desire to serve. During the March 21-S cabinet meeting, I committed to form an ad-hoc committee to identify reasons why more Lions are not involved at the district and multiple district level, and then provide recommendations for improvement. I will appreciate input from any of you to help us in our quest. In addition to my district, I welcome comments from Lions in other districts as well.

Please provide any comments you think will be helpful. Please consider the following questions:

What would cause you to serve in a district position?

What would prevent you from serving in a district position?

What do you need to know about district positions?

What would make you feel prepared to assume a district leadership role?

The best way to provide input is to email me at: [email protected]. I am still employed, so my schedule can be tricky. However, if you want to visit with me, and you are patient with my schedule, you can also contact me via cell phone at: 928-651-0455.

Thank you for your consideration regarding this matter. Thanks to each and every one of you for your love, caring, and commitment to serving your community.

YES WE CAN – BE BOLD

Hope is bold! Next year we will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, the pandemic is winding down. We can again look forward beyond personal convenience and open up our grand ideas that make life worth living. Someone said “We can make ourselves miserable, or make ourselves strong. It all takes the same amount of work”. Be bold in your club’s approach for the next year. So act boldly! Innovate. Track down a new path. Try fundraisers and do projects you have never done before. Who says it won’t work – try it. Be unafraid to go where no Lion has ever gone before. Be fearless in your planning. Contact new groups and

communities previously untouched by local Lions clubs. Reach out and establish new friends within your community. Build rapport with all of your new contacts. Think about partnerships with other service clubs, and other Lions clubs. If your club is small in number, partner with two or three other small clubs. Learn to “serve” like never before. Think Boldly. We are looking forward to our club elections. Have you identified a new Lion ready for higher office. Maybe a committee chairman, a director, or a secretary/treasurer? We must start injecting new blood into our clubs. Many of our long time leaders are aging out. Let’s ask a newer member to step up and assume a leadership role. Take advantage of the training classes that GLT Ken Leja has planned. The New Member Orientation training is very timely for both “old

timers and new comers”. We can all use a little reminder of just what it is we’re trying to accomplish. The local training being planned will be fantastic, with a new ELLI instruction set up being implemented. And remember, that LCI has a multitude of interesting classes available. You can take these on-line at your leisure. Take a close look at the Guiding Lion Program. The district will need many more Guiding Lions next year. The PDGA needs a team of Guiding Lions now. We need you!As I stated previously, District 21N is in good hands next year. DGE Joyce Mayer will become District Governor. IPDG Marie Cunning will commence her rerun for District Governor the following year, and Lion Farhana Ahmed will begin her climb up the ladder of leadership. We are in Fine Hands Indeed.

FYI – Coming soon – plan accordingly with your dues structure in your club.

The International Board of Directors voted in October 2019 to approve an international dues adjustment resolution that would be voted on at the 2020 International Convention, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The board recently approved a new dues adjustment model that will be voted on at the 2021 International Convention.

The Board of Directors undertook an extensive review of Lions Clubs International’s financials, including the implementation of substantial budget reductions. After much consideration, the board proposed to adjust dues by $7 over a three-year period.

Under the proposal, international dues would be adjusted according to the following schedule:

$3 increase on July 1, 2022

$2 increase on July 1, 2023

$2 increase on July 1, 2024
