Quand j’ai voyagé en Asie avec ma famille pendant les dernières quatre années, j’ai dû aider à trouver notre l’hôtel. Parce que je parle l’anglais, je demandais les directions et j’ai fini par trouver notre l’hôtel.

En premier lieu, le plurilinguisme est important par exemple pour étudier à l’étranger. Je veux étudier la musique aux États-Unis ou le droit en Autriche. Ensuite, le plurilinguisme est vital lors des voyages. Souvent nous devons demander où aller ou nous voulons commander une boisson dans un bar.

En deuxième lieu, la Slovénie est un petit pays. Dans le monde, peu de gens parlent la langue slovène. Grâce à notre système éducatif, les élèves parlent très bien l’anglais, ce qui est bien parce qu’aujourd’hui le monde est très lié. En parlant plusieurs langues, nous pouvons regarder des films et écouter de la musique dans des langues étrangères.

En troisième lieu, en étant plurilingue, nous pouvons parler avec nos amis ou avec nos familles que vivent à l’étranger. Finalement, le plurilinguisme est très important pour notre futur; nous pouvons travailler ou habiter à l’étranger.

Tout bien considéré, le plurilinguisme est très important pour moi parce que je veux étudier et peut-être habiter ailleurs.

LANGUAGES: WHAT THE HELL WILL I NEED THOSE FOR?For the first eleven years of my life there were only two languages: Slovene and

gibberish. I never paid attention to the foreign languages around me. If I couldn’t speak it, I didn’t listen to it and to me there wasn’t a speck of difference between Dutch and Croatian.

The first change to this attitude occurred, of course, when I was forced to learn English in the fourth grade and at first, I hated it. I could never have imagined that I could ever use English at a level anywhere near my Slovene. So for the first two years I just sat there, learning words, phrases and sentences, that yet enabled me to communicate so little. My progress at English, possibly due to the low motivation, was painfully slow. I just sat at my desk, patiently not paying attention to what the teacher was saying and thinking to myself: “What the hell will I need English for?”

But alas, my strategy of ignoring English to make it go away had a fatal flaw: it didn’t. And it got progressively harder too! When my Bs dropped to Cs, my parents decided to help me. Their method? English-only time! Every so often they would start speaking to me in English and I had to respond in English to the best of my ability. That was hugely beneficial, but it wasn’t what got me excited about English. That honour goes to two great bits of British comedy: A Bit of Fry and Laurie and You Rang M’lord? These two showed me that there was a way of expressing myself that couldn’t be matched by Slovene. It sparked my passion, not just for the English language, but also for the British pronunciation, which I judge to be much more interesting and pleasant than the plain and dull American dialect, which I was used to speaking before. From then on my English improved rapidly. In three years I went from having mostly Cs to straight As. At the end of elementary school, however, there was another language waiting for me.

I chose German as an elective subject for a very good reason – there was nothing better to be had. It started in a similar way; learning words, phrases and the rules with their many, many exceptions. This time at least, I enjoyed the sound of German and was apt to be the only person this side of the Alps to find German a pleasant–sounding language. That , however, did not prove to be motivation enough and I learned next to nothing in my elementary school German classes.

Transitioning to high school I experienced something unique. As I became more skeptical, I started questioning everything I believed or did. Learning German also came under question. Why learn a language when most of its speakers also speak English? “What the hell am I going to need German for?” In high school German was already a mandatory subject, but I still needed to know whether I wanted to be able to speak German or just survive the lessons. It might have been a difficult question if not for a curious realisation. You see, at the same time I discovered the first genre of music I enjoyed – 19th century German patriotic music. Not exactly a common choice, I know, but then again, my taste rarely is. It was because of this and because of the general appeal of German that I decided to try to learn German in earnest. It was – and still is – very difficult. I find, however, that German, like English, allows for a unique way of expressing oneself, and being a huge fan of German history, I find it much easier to learn about it knowing as much German as I do.

At the start of high school there was another language on the horizon – Latin. I decided for Poljane the day I went there on Open Doors day. But Poljane offered two curricula – the classical and the aptly named non-classical curriculum. The classical one offered learning Latin, as well as some more exciting stuff, like a trip to Rome and fewer science lessons. It was for the latter reasons that I chose the classical curriculum and had I known what learning Latin would look like I never would have opted for it. I cannot tell you what I thought we would do in Latin, I just do not remember, learning ancient sayings perhaps. I just remember how flabbergasted I was when we started learning Latin as if it were any other language. Pretty soon, however, I grew to love Latin with its delightful vocabulary and rigid structure and rules with ever so few exceptions. It comes as no surprise that everyone was bewildered by my choice. It is incomprehensible to people why I would opt to learn a dead language; “What on earth will you need it for?” I never know what to tell them. I don’t need Latin for anything, but since I have been learning Latin I have found it has benefited me in some expected and a few unexpected ways. Obviously, learning Latin has helped me become better at English. Learning new words and their spelling has become much easier and it feels good to hear a thirteen-syllable word and know intuitively what it means. But Latin has also helped me better understand and express myself in German and Slovene since they both base their grammar on Latin. Learning Latin has also helped me learn about the Roman culture, thinking and their way of life, which had already been my preferred pastime many years before. Latin also helped me better appreciate the works of philosophers like Nietzsche and Machiavelli, who spoke Latin and used that knowledge to convey deeper thoughts and ideas. Finally, this language too brought with it a new style of music that was to my taste – Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

In third year I was introduced to my last foreign language so far – Italian. I chose it as an elective subject for the same reason I had chosen German four years prior – nothing better to be had. The major difference, however, was that I didn’t like Italian very much. To me it was just a worse kind of Latin. Knowing it would only be a part of my curriculum for a year, I ended up asking myself yet again: “What the hell will I need this for?” I knew in advance I couldn’t learn a language in such a short time to any degree of fluency, so I

decided to just have fun with it. While everyone else was dying of boredom, I was looking for patterns, similarities with Latin and origins of specific words. In the end, I didn’t get much out of learning Italian, except perhaps a base of knowledge should I ever want to learn it in the future and the ability to obtain basic necessities when in Italy.

In the end every language gives you, what you are willing to take from it. Realising that language is not just a means of communication, but also the carrier of its respective culture, enables you to recognise the usefulness of learning a language beyond its primary utilitarian function. Of the four languages, I have been and am studying, each has in its own way contributed to my understanding of the world around me and my ability to express myself in whatever language I may be speaking. Will I learn more languages in the future? I don’t know. It rather depends on whether I will have the opportunity to do so. It has often been suggested to me, mainly by my parents, that I should pick up Croatian, since it is clearly the easiest to learn and the most sought after by employers, in Slovenia, at least. The problem is that learning a language demands a great deal of motivation, derived mainly from the prospect of being able to speak the language. And I can’t see myself being motivated to speak the language that I see merely as a less pleasant version of a language that I like – Slovene. In this regard I find myself drawn much more to Dutch or French, but then again, what the hell will I need those for?

English and Slovene: Will Goliath finally defeat David?Should (the) English win?

As the Biblical story tells, a colossal force (the English language) is unexpectedly defeated by a modest unit (the Slovene language). But in this case, can it really be actualised in the linguistics sphere, where an enormous amount of small spoken dialects and languages have gone extinct or been pushed away to a miniscule speaker base by the spreading global giants, such as English, Spanish or Mandarin. And where on the spectre can we find Slovenian?English is a juggernaut of a language, producing a staggering amount of mass media and pop culture through which the language and its worldwide usage is only growing. Next to it the small Slovenian language pales in comparison. Being spoken as an official language in only one country with little to no international renown damages the languages prospects of spreading and, in doing so, keeping the language alive. With the sheer number of native speakers and people learning it as a second language, English should TRUMP any smaller language. The sheer amount of terminology (scientific or otherwise) mainly originating from English can take years to be translated into a small language such as Slovene, and at that point the vocabulary can already be considered outdated or redundant. The amount of media also influences people into picking up a language. Why would anyone want to learn Slovenian if all they can consume are the three films and twenty-five songs we put out each year? On top of that, Slovene, being a Slavic language, is harder for foreigners (of non-Slavic countries) to learn. English is everywhere, you start learning it before you even realise.

Slovene cannot be stopped!

Firstly, let’s face this: Slovene cannot be as widespread and spoken as much as English. We’ve proven this in the first part. As long as Slovene remains the first and the official language it will not simply just disappear. A language needs at least 50.000 speakers to stay relevant, so we’ve got that covered. As long as there is a community, in which Slovene is primarily used, the language should not go extinct. Yet, we can still improve Slovenian to stay in persistent use and up-to-date with other global languages. That of course means we must(!) accept changes, whether it’s a new term, a different spelling, or a grammar update, small languages must be adaptable in order to survive. We also need to spread out our culture through speaking the Slovene language. Art of all kinds is necessary for the means of language promotion, showing off the power of Slovene

through poems, literature, songs, etc. Scientific projects should also be encouraged – an exceeding amount of mass papers should probably be published in a foreign language, such as English, so that Slovene researchers would get more attention (just like with Tour de France). Lastly, our community has to continue evolving. Encouraging immigrants to learn Slovene is crucial (but not in a colonial type of way). We need to be recognisable, to draw people into learning our language. In order to do that we need to nurture tourism, economy, culture, science, nature, our community ... A prosperous country should invite speakers in. No-one will want to learn Slovene, if they believe they speak it in Slovakia. In conclusion, although Slovene may seem as an unused or endangered language, it’s not halfway near that extinction point, despite English coming in strong and without mercy for the unofficial and minority languages.

V okviru počastitve Dneva jezikov smo v 4.E in 4.A razredu izhajali iz dejstva, da stereotipi in nespoštovanje drugačnosti ne obstajajo le na televiziji, v časopisju in na socialnih omrežjih, pač pa so, žal, del našega vsakdana. Zato smo najprej poslušali Trkajevo pesem Razbijte stereotipe, od koder smo črpali besedišče in ga prevedli v španščino. Sledila je Zlatkova pesem Žive naj vsi narodi, v kateri ponuja rešitve za prej naštete probleme. Ob tem smo ugotovili, da je slovenska himna, sedma kitica Prešernove Zdravljice, ena najbolj spoštljivih državnih himen, saj ne poveličuje slovenskega naroda, pač pa sobivanje različnih narodov in kultur. V nadaljevanju pa je bila naloga dijakov napisati eno kitico na temo medkulturnosti, spoštovanja ali bogastva sobivanja različnih kultur ali prevesti slovensko himno. Tule so njihove stvaritve.

Je suis entourée de langues étrangères depuis mon enfance. Avec ma famille, nous rendions visite à mes grands-parents en Croatie chaque année où j’ai appris à parler cette langue. Là, j’ai souvent regardé des séries turques avec ma grand-mère et j’ai commencé à l’aimer. J’ai aussi développé l’amour pour le japonais en regardant les anime.

Tout d’abord, je pense qu'être polyglotte m'aidera à trouver un emploi. Premièrement, j’aurais plus de possibilités d’embauche. Par exemple, je pourrais travailler à l’étranger dans l’un des pays dont la langue je parle. Ou peut-être je peux rester dans mon pays et travailler où je peux utiliser les langues différentes. Deuxièmement, être capable de parler plusieurs langues est très efficace pour travailler pour des entreprises mondiales. Par exemple, la compétence de parler japonais me donnera la possibilité de travailler avec l'entreprise Muji. Ou peut-être Big Hit, si je pouvais parler coréen.

Pour continuer, la compétence de parler les langues différentes m’aidera à voyager plus facilement. En premier lieu, je pourrais parler avec les locaux. Par exemple, je pourrais former les amitiés ou je pourrais leur demander quelque chose à propos leur pays. En deuxième lieu, je pourrais me débrouiller facilement dans une ville étrangère. Par exemple, je pourrais y rapidement trouver le métro ou la gare. En troisième lieu, je pourrais aussi trouver des restaurants ou bistros sans difficultés.

Finalement, je pense qu'être capable de parler beaucoup de langues est très utile pour mon quotidien. Pour commencer, je pourrais comprendre les œuvres d’art en original. Par exemple, je pourrais regarder des films et des séries et comprendre tout. Ensuite, je pourrais aussi lire des livres en original. Ensuite, je pourrais aider les gens. Par exemple, je pourrais expliquer aux touristes où certain bâtiment est situé. Dernièrement, je pourrais traduire quelque chose en langue différente à mon amie.

Maintenant j’apprends le français au lycée. L’année passée j’ai commencé à apprendre le japonais dans mon temps libre avec un locuteur natif. Je veux étudier ces deux langues à l'université parce que c’est mon but de devenir traductrice. C’est aussi mon rêve de vivre dans un pays francophone ou au Japon.

J'ai toujours respecté les gens qui parlaient beaucoup de langues différentes et j'ai toujours voulu parler plusieurs langues différentes, même si je ne suis pas doué pour les langues. Je parle slovène, anglais, français et un peu croate, mais j'aimerais parler beaucoup plus, car je pense qu'il y a de nombreux avantages à connaître des langues étrangères.

Tout d'abord, nous pouvons voyager beaucoup plus facilement. Premièrement, les étrangers aiment si les touristes parlent leur langue. Par exemple, les Français n'aiment pas parler anglais et dans certains cas, les habitants simplement ne parlent pas anglais. Deuxièmement, nous ne nous sentons pas si perdus dans un pays étranger. C'est parce que nous pouvons lire les signes et comprendre des gens dans la rue. Troisièmement, nous pouvons obtenir une immersion culturelle complète. Nous pouvons parler aux habitants dans leur langue et apprendre sur la culture et les habitudes.

Le deuxième avantage est l'obtention des amis internationaux. En connaissant des gens d'autres nations, nous devenons plus ouvert d'esprit. C’est-a-dire, nous pouvons avoir de nouveaux points de vues et adopter de nouvelles modes de vie. En outre, nos voyages sont plus amusants. C'est parce que nous avons un guide touristique et que nous pouvons

dormir dans une maison de notre ami. Enfin, nous pouvons pratiquer la langue étrangère avec eux. En effet, nous développons notre cerveau et nous pouvons progresser dans la langue plus rapidement.

Dans l'ensemble, je pense que la connaissance des langues est très importante. Notre monde est très globalisé et nous pouvons nous connecter avec n’importe qui. Si nous voulons devenir éduqués, ouverts d'esprit et tolérants, nous devons nous connecter avec des personnes différentes et par conséquent devenir les meilleures versions de nous-mêmes.

Die Bedeutung der Mehrsprachigkeit heute

Als bilinguale oder zweisprachige Kinder zählen Kinder, die mit zwei verschiedenen Sprachen aufwachsen. Weil ich auch selbst das Privileg habe zweisprachig aufzuwachsen, traue ich mir zu, ein oder zwei Dinge über das Thema zu wissen. Ich finde, dass es schon aus der Perspektive der interkulturellen Verbundenheit ein großer Bonus ist zweischprachig zu sein, weil das Kind schon sehr früh mit Kindern aus verschiedenen Umfeldern kommunizieren kann. Der Bilingualismus hilft auch später bei der Suche eines Jobs, weil man ein größeres Suchumfeld hat. Auch das Lernen neuer Sprachen ist normalerweise für bilinguale Kinder leichter als für ”normale” Kinder, weil sie schon ein besseres Gehör für Sprachen haben. Andererseits kann es aber bei jüngeren, bilingualen Kindern öfter zu Problemen bei einer der Muttersprachen kommen, weil sie beginnen die Sprachen zu mischen. Da kann es zu ganz lustigen Sätzen kommen, die am Ende keinen Sinn ergeben. Also ein kleiner Tipp meinerseits für alle Eltern die zwei Sprachen sprechen: Lernt eurem Kind beide Sprachen, weil das bilinguale Aufwachsen viele Vorteile hat und weil man nie weiß, wann das Kind die Sprachen gebrauchen könnte.

MUTTERSPRACHLER BEIM DEUTSCHUNTERRICHT

Meine Mutter ist aus Deutschland und spricht mit mir seit meiner Geburt Deutsch. Jedes Jahr fahre ich in den Ferien mit der Familie für zwei bis drei Wochen nach Deutschland und besuche unsere Verwandtschaft. Wieso sollte also jemand der seit klein auf Deutsch spricht, gerade diese Sprache als Schulfach wählen?Die meisten würden bei dieser Frage wahrscheinlich auf Faulheit tippen. Das stimmt natürlich bis zu einem gewissen Grad, ist aber trotzdem weit vom Hauptgrund entfernt. Häufig habe ich das Gefühl, dass sich meine Mitschüler mein Verhältnis zu Deutsch so vorstellen wie ihr eigenes Verhältnis zu Slowenisch. Leider entspricht das der Wahrheit nur teilweise. Vor dem Gymnasium hatte ich noch einige Schwierigkeiten mit der deutschen

Rechtschreibung und ich hatte keine Ahnung von Grammatikregeln und Ausdrücken. Mein Wortschatz war auch nicht besonders groß, denn ich sprach Deutsch hauptsächlich mit meiner Mutter und nur selten über komplexere Themen, bei denen ich meinen Wortschatz erweitern könnte. Es gab einfach zu viele wichtige Wörter, die ich im Alltag nicht regelmäßig benutzte und sie mir deshalb auf Dauer nicht merken konnte. Kompliziertere Texte zu schreiben habe ich auch nie wirklich gelernt. Im Großen und Ganzen hatte ich also Schwierigkeiten mit Allem, was über alltägliche Gespräche hinauslief. Schon vor dem Gymnasium war ein Studium in Deutschland oder Österreich für mich eine wichtige Option, die ich mir auf jeden Fall offenhalten wollte. Mir war aber auch bewusst, dass dafür mein Deutsch noch ein ganzes Stück besser werden musste. Ich habe gehofft, dass mir der Deutschunterricht bei allen diesen Problemen helfen könnte und jetzt, am Anfang des vierten Jahrgangs kann ich sagen, dass er das auch getan hat.Wie empfinde ich also den Deutschunterricht?Im ersten Schuljahr war der Stoff für mich natürlich sehr leicht. Bei lustigen Sprachfehlern meiner Mitschüler musste ich mich oft bemühen, dass Lachen zurückzuhalten, es machte die Stunden aber auch interessanter. Für Klausuren und Abfragen musste ich nur sehr begrenzt lernen, dafür hatte ich aber sehr viel Arbeit mit dem beantworten von Fragen, die mir Mitschüler in Verbindung mit dem Schulstoff stellten. Damit verbrachte ich vor allem vor Klassenarbeiten ganze Nachmittage. In den nächsten Jahren wurden die Fragen von Mitschülern allmählich weniger. Das spielte mir in die Karten, denn auch für mich wurde der Stoff langsam alles andere als selbstverständlich. Faulenzen und nicht immer aufmerksam sein, wie im ersten Schuljahr, konnte ich mir jetzt nicht mehr leisten. Während der Unterricht immer anspruchsvoller wurde, blieben die Erwartungen meiner Mitschüler und meiner Familie dieselben. Sie denken immer noch, dass ich ohne größere Anstrengungen in jeder Klassenarbeit locker eine 5 schreiben kann. Das bereitet mir mehr und mehr Stress, denn es wird zunehmend schwieriger ihre hohen Erwartungen zu erfüllen. Mittlerweile lerne ich für Klausuren genauso viel wie einige meiner Mitschüler. Am meisten Zeit verbringe ich mit der Rechtschreibung von Vokabeln und Grammatikregeln muss ich auch wie jeder andere lernen. Jetzt, nach drei Jahren Deutschunterricht lerne ich neue Vokabeln praktisch jede Stunde, Aufgaben löse ich häufig nicht schneller als andere und bei einigen Themen wie zum Beispiel Gedichte Analysen weiß ich auch nicht wirklich mehr als meine Klassenkameraden.
