Describe how this lesson is developmentally appropriate: The skills that are needed for this lesson is cutting and gluing. This lesson is relative to their lives because they can relate to the leaves and scarecrow to work together to stop the bully crows. They can relate this to the classroom and helping with their friends. I will the instructional strategy to check for understanding and ask questions as we go along to make sure the students are understanding the lesson. Vygotsky states that the children learn from the environment until they master the use of mental tools. In early childhood they learn from repetition and practicing tasks multiple times to have a concept stick. They need to feel purpose that this lesson is exciting and can be fun for them to be engaged and wanting to learn. This lesson will relate to their lives and friends so they can better understand the story.

Pre-Assessment I will have the students answer questions like what is a scarecrow, what is a crow, what happens to

leaves in the fall, and what is the purpose of a scarecrow. This will introduce the topic and introduce what the story is about. I will be able to assess how much the students already know prior to reading the story.

Assessment The students will be able to relate their craft to the story and they will draw a picture or write about

their own experiences and how they can stop bullying. Also I will be walking around during this time observing.

Post-Assessment I will evaluate the students by asking questions to check for understanding. The students will share

their ideas at the end so I will be able to see if they followed the prompt.

Lesson Opening: I will have the students come over in the circle time center to read a story. I will ask if the students have ever heard of a scarecrow before or if they have seen one or know what they are used for. This will have the students prepare for the lesson and will give clues to what the story will be about. I will read the book The Falling Leaves and the Scarecrow. But before I read the story I will state my expectations on the rug. Crisscross applesauce, hands in your lap, and voices are off unless I call on you. I will then ask the students if they have heard of the word bullying.

I Do

Instructional InputI will talk about how the crows were bullies to the scarecrow and the leaves in the story. I will go over how they were being mean and picking on the scarecrow and the leaves for fun. I will teach the students about how the scarecrow and the leaves were very sad. I will relate this to the classroom and how everyone will be sad if there is name calling, stealing toys, or pushing other classmates. I will state this is why we have classroom rules. I will explain what bullying in the classroom means and how it can hurt our friend’s feelings. I will model correct ways to play with friends to the students and will show them the incorrect ways to play in the classroom. Before moving on I will make sure to ask again the students what bullying is, what is the correct way to play in the classroom, and what are some incorrect ways to treat our friends. I will ensure to restate why we have the classroom rules and how it will keep everyone safe and from getting feelings hurt.

We

Do

Guided PracticeI will show the students my example I made of a scarecrow and that as a class we are going to create this project. I will model to first have the paper plate in the middle of their desk spot and how I will first have the students follow my lead to take a glue stick and to put a little glue on the strands of paper yellow hair to stick onto the top sides of their plate for the bangs and sides of the hair. I will have them cut out the parts of the hats that were pre-traced and they can glue this hat on the top of the paper plate head. I will have them draw some stitching marks. The students will then glue the middle of their flower to the main flower and glue their flower to the top of their hat. They are free to draw a face of the scarecrow and add any details. They will draw the eyes and cut out the orange nose and glue it into the face. They are free to draw the mouth and eyes how every they want or add googly eyes.

You

Do

Independent PracticeI will then show the students on the back of my scarecrow how I wrote a story or they can draw a picture of how they can stop bullying and how they can work together with their friends. If they are in kindergarten and it is developmentally appropriate they can write a story as well as a picture. I will explain how the leaves and the wind helped the scarecrow by scaring the crows away by the wind blowing leaves all over the scarecrow to make him look scarier. I will explain how they can think of how they can help friends if someone is being mean to a friend or themselves. They will have time to express themselves and their ideas by drawing and writing. I will give them enough time to make it their own and relate the story to their own lives to help with comprehension.

Lesson Closing For the closing I will restate what they learned in the book about bullying and how they can help their friends to stick together. We will talk about how the wind, leaves, and the scarecrow all worked together using teamwork. I will have the students have opportunities to share their scarecrow and their story on the back. We will go around the classroom giving everyone a change to share their ideas and artwork.

Anal

yze After you have administered your assessments (formal or informal) for this lesson, analyze the results.

The students will be able to converse and share each other’s ideas. They are able to compare their ideas to their classmates and they will be able to form opinions.

Refle

ct Reflect on your effectiveness as a teacher based on the analysis of students’ performance.I gave correct and easy instructions for the lesson plan. The craft is developmentally appropriate for the age group I picked. One thing I would change is to come up with a closing song or something fun to remember the story.
