Hi Members,

Our low meeting attendance numbers point to it being winter and the last fewweeks of cold mornings and regular rain is confirmation. It is of course a timewhen many of our members travel off north or in small groups to warmerhabitats. I know of one band of 6 members now in the Kimberley, no doubtquite warm, and laughing as they read this.

For those back home there is still plenty to do and the Club calendar hasnumerous options across trips, driver training and social activities to keep youall busy. If new to the Club jump in and have a go. What you get out of theClub will be due to your own investment of time.

Those members at the June meeting learnt of the great gift the Club hasreceived from Toyota Motor Corporation Australia (TMCA). This is in part dueto our attendance at recent events both held in NSW for the Prado 150upgrade launch and the Toyota Clubs of Australia National Conference. Wehave received 4 teardrop banners and a 4.5M X 3M marquee, which althoughstill boxed is said to contain both the TLCC logo and Toyota logo. We have ofcourse formally thanked TMCA and our friends in TLCC NSW who helpedfacilitate.

Membership renewals are due by 31 July. Late fees apply after that.Remember direct credit makes it easier for us and please complete therenewal registration form and send it through. Bank detail and the form are inthis publication. We have had some deposits already without sufficient detailso please forgive us when we send you a reminder. I expect we will matchthe detail eventually !!!

Don’t forget the good value that the Cornes Toyota loyalty card represents. Not only does it provide discount on services or parts but for every $100 youspend you get $10 worth of loyalty points to apply to your next service orpurchase. This is effectively a discount on top of a discount. If you need acard to record your purchases let us know as we have a supply at WAFC andof course do the right thing by Cornes staff and produce your membershipcard when seeking the benefits. If in the market for a new or second handvehicle the Club special buying price is also very attractive.

A small band of newer members braved the cold and wet and, based on theinteraction we had, enjoyed our new members night held late June. We try tocover all facets of the Club and its various activities. Thanks go to EdmundMorries and Michael Brooks who assisted facilitate.

So what do you know of the Toyota ‘dream ‘

It all began with founder Kiichiro Toyoda (yes d not t) whose dream it was tobuild a fully made Japanese car that was low price, economical, yet had highperformance. So Toyota began to develop a Jeep-like vehicle with a slightlylonger wheelbase, slightly more compliant suspension and a more powerfulengine.

By early 1951 Toyota had produced a one-tonne prototype with Toyota’s “B”engine, a petrol-powered water-cooled 3386 cc unit. So with the B engine andthe Jeep like body it became known as the BJ. Six months later test driverIchiro Taira drove the prototype to the sixth checkpoint of 10 on the 3,775 mMt Fuji, higher than anyone thought possible in a 4WD. As the saying goes‘the rest is history.’

Cheers and travel safe

Cheers,

Darryl Royans

Peake weekend has just finished with a first for the club.No trainers were available from the club so we had touse an import for another. Eventually it did not matter asby the Saturday morning every single trainee hadwithdrawn. Costs the club $375 for nothing to happen.

As we have sold more than twenty training books overthe last twelve months, we can only assume that thereare too many training events. The July Peake weekendwill therefore be offered to the social group to use.

As we only have one name for the October Morganweekend, this will be cancelled unless we get morenames. Peake for September only has two names.

It takes a lot of time and effort to organise the trainingfor the club. It is very disappointing when all that effortgoes to waste.

Peake is a great place for sand driving and great fun. Ifyou didn’t manage to get there in July (sadly nobody did)then put your name down for Sptember. You won’tregret it.

If you would like to know more about GPS andOziExplorer then we have a one-day course run on bothof two days in November. With GPS and OziExplorer youcan see where you are driving on a digital map. Excellentfor off-road driving.

trips trips calendarHi Everyone,

You are probably all settling in forwinter, feet up in front of the fire, awarm blanket and a cup of hotbroth, mmmm, cosy. Well whileyou are in this lovely relaxed mood, you may wish to dream about theapproaching summer and warmertemperatures and of course, trips.Consider the Lions Fleurieu Trip inOctober, which most of you alreadyhave, and the list is getting longer. Some good news is that theMurray Sunset National Park triphas been brought forward to thisyear !! so what a great place tofarewell Winter and welcomeSpring, ahh... Spring..........

Now........ some of you may bethinking about a trip you would liketo do, but would prefer that a clubmember or two or three, comealong with you. Travelling in a groupis more fun and it’s recommendedin some of the remoter areas. Oneof our well travelled members iskeen to do a trip along the AnneBeadell Highway from Coober Pedyto Laverton (WA), and the detailsare below, so if you are interested, just let me know, and if you areprepared to lead the trip, well that’seven better.

It has also been suggested that theGawler Ranges in the northern EyrePeninsula would be a great place togo, so if interested let me know.Deep Creek and the KudriemitchieWorking Bee ( aka fishing, sightseeing and relaxing...ahh, theserenity!) are still beckoning, as isthe iconic Cape York, so considerthose and enjoy!.

So much to do and so little time ?

Cheers for now, and travel safe

.

PS. Mikey is in Bali, no wonder heis talking about warmer places!

Don’t forget to put your name down with the Social officer for functions or email [email protected]

social reportWell, James and Linley are up around Gem Tree north ofAlice Springs where no doubt it is chilly by night andsunny by day, but knowing the Edwards they are probablykeeping toasty at night with their mull wine!! So in theirabsence Mr. X has had a go at a social update.

Firstly, prior to the AGM Linley put out a request forhelpers. It would be great to get a small band of regularvolunteers (let’s call that group a social work committee)to help co-ordinate activities, assist with raffle ticket salesetc at meetings and general get members to participate invarious events that Linley has scheduled. Ideal for thosewho do not want full committee roles but like to pitch in,so speak with Linley, please.

1. 16th August Mt Crawford picnic and fossicking day.Meeting at Mt Crawford forestry information centre onWarren road at 0930hrs to pick up fossicking permitswhich are available for a small cost. We will be fossickingfor gold, opal and garnets, driving some of the not opento the public 4x4 tracks (forestry permits pending)exploring the old mines and doing the short hike up to theforestry lookout tower. Bring a picnic lunch, plenty todrink, warm clothes, sturdy foot wear and fossickingequipment. A couple of metal detectors will be suppliedon the day for people to have a go. Mining has occurredin the area from the 1800's with finds of precious stones, gold and even diamonds.

2. 13th & 14th September Ladies Day drive weekend atthe Bartagunyah Estate, near Melrose in the SouthernFlinders Ranges. There will be bush camping at thevineyard, 4wding of the mountain tracks on the estateand wine tasting on Saturday evening. Beautiful views areto be found on the 4 x 4 tracks. On Sunday a drive isplanned for a couple of hours over the Bridle trail. Ifhubby is driving he will be given a pretty pink ribbon towear. I encourage the ladies to have a go. Please note, onladies day drives, encouragement and support is theexpected behaviour from the passenger seat. The clubhas had a very recent experience of what happens whenthe driver has an accident and can no longer drive. Ladiesday drives are planned as a confidence booster for thosethat don't get behind the wheel very often, but may justbe needed to drive out of a track one day. Back seatdrivers and negative comments will be frowned upon andsupper duties complete with vanilla slice (president’sfavourite) at the next club meeting for those perpetratorscan be easily arranged. The track is described as a soft4WD track so an easy drive with beautiful views. We willbe heading back to Adelaide after an early lunch. Cost ofcamping $15 per adult per night, there are a limitednumber of powered sites available. Driving of the tracks isa further $25 per vehicle for the weekend which is very

reasonable.

3. 22nd September: We have organised for an openevening at Snowys camping store prior to thecommencement of that months general meeting. From1800-1930hrs Snowys will have their store open to us, aguest speaker has been arranged to talk about solarpanels, their selection, use and care. A 20% in storediscount has been negotiated for club members attendingon the evening.

Please support this initiative and Snowys by attending, asit's not only a great chance to score some bargains, butalso important to show support for businesses that makethe effort to provide services, products and activities toour club.

4. 22nd October Adelaide Oval Tour.10 am startCome and tour the new look Adelaide Oval stand andfacilities. Cost is group discount to $15 per person.Meet at the Memorial drive entrance at 9.50 am for a tourthat takes around 90 minutes. If enough are interestedperhaps lunch in the city afterwards.

5. Pirates on the Murray: Easter 2015. We already havesome bookings for this fun activity to be held next year,so get in quick. We will be hiring houseboats, donningpirate garb and having a fun filled weekend of sailing, pillaging, having a few drinks, a bit more pillaging and afew more drinks.

So until next time, stay bright side up, wheels turning andkeep the passion for adventure flowing.

After a pleasant breakfast in Birdsville we headed west for the Desert. On arrival at Lake Nappanerica wedeflated our tyres and headed for Big Red. Well Big Red, as usual, was attracting a crowd but those comingout of the desert with minimal fuel, food, water etc. can have a real ’go’ at driving over the monster. Thoseheading west of course need to be more prudent. Our group was, except for one who just needed to see ifthe new suspension was any good. It was. So I decided if Ron was amenable, then I would do one more runup and over the dune with another in the passenger seat. I found a deck of cards and Keaton drew high cardso off we set. Another vehicle had become stuck on the dune but there was plenty of room for another topass but as I approached people appeared from behind the minor dunes and vegetation so I eased off andbang, high-centred! A bit of digging but with the automatic I was unable to ride the clutch as I had been ableto in the past with a manual transmission to get it out. Another vehicle was all too pleased to take a photo ofhis 60 Series pulling me out. A quick jerk and we were on our way.

The next few dunes hadthe drivers guessing a bitbut with a little less tyrepressure and the rightmomentum the groupquickly learnt thetechnique of ambling overthe dunes with minimaltrack damage andminimal use of fuel.Throughout the trip wedid swap the lead arounda few times to see whatimpact we were havingand I am very pleased toreport it was minimal. Atclose to 1 pm we were inthe bed of the Eyre Creekand on the western edgewe stopped and collectedsome fallen Eucalypt. That timber, with a smallcommunity fire each night

saw us through the desert (3 nights) and was also sufficient for a celebratory fire in the Mt Dare Campground. That night we turned north off the main track and camped in a Gidgee community. I warned the group aboutGidgee trees and the very unpleasant and poisonous odour that they have and stressed that they are not to beused for firewood. We were approximately 120 Km from Birdsville and were making good time so a 4 pmcamp was appreciated. The flies were bad so I pitched the Gazebo that I carry for such auspicious occasions. We had our pre-dinner drinks, team meeting, and a chat about the question of the day in the relative comfortof a fly-free environment. Most of us cooked after sunset when we had some relief from these pests.Conditions continued to be warm with most days the vehicle air intake reading 340 C. In these conditions itwas more conducive to eating in the relative cool of the night. The Coleman Gazebo does make a good case tolimit the trip to 9 nine people and four vehicles so all can gather and chat in comfort before dinner.

Tuesday was Astro night. As the bright red sun set in the west the full moon rose in the east and we wereable to watch a full eclipse on the moon. A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadowof the Earth. For this to happen the Sun, Earth, and Moon must be closely aligned with the Moon and theMoon located furthest from the Sun. Some more Science for the young people!

Day 4 came as every other morning, cool and fresh just before the sun rose, but once the sun was up so werethe flies. The drought in western NSW and Queensland has decimated populations of the introduced DungBeetles which decompose cow dung, one of the habitats of the Bush Fly. The fly population was large andvery annoying this trip and were after every bit of moisture they could get. In winter, and if a dry winter, thereare usually no flies in the Simpson. This day everybody was ready early and by 7.40 am we were ‘making blacksmoke’ heading west for the Queensland border. We then turned south along Lake Poeppel which was dampbut detours around the wet bits made for easy travel. When dry and firm the flat salt lake beds allow the moreadventurous to imagine the exploits of Sir Donald Campbell.

We arrived at Poeppel’s Corner at morning tea time. After the obligatory photographs and the signing of the visitor’sbook we took a look at Lake Thomas. Yes, it too looked wet and slippery with some very deep ruts filled with water. Icarefully drove onto the surface asking the convoy to wait and photograph the possible drama. It was a little slipperybut at slow speed and minimal engine revs it was an easy crossing. I was beginning to wonder if we were going toget any thrills for the boys. Possibly the French Line might give us a challenge. On a previous trip we spent muchtime looking for the track. Several dry years in a row had finished off the vegetation and it was like the photographsthat one sees of the Sahara, bare shifting sand. Not so this time. A clearly defined track which was easily navigablemade for a good run to the junction of the Knolls Track. The French Track today is a stark contrast to what Iexperienced on my first trip across the Desert. The track was as straight as a gun barrel, as you would expect for ageo-survey line, and we were travelling east, the easy way, but the convoy with sand tyres and 12 psi in them werehaving two or three attemptsat every dune.

At the junction we headedsouth on the Knolls Trackstopping at the ApprodinnaAttora Knolls for a Geologylesson. This track used to bejust a two wheel track to theKnolls and then back out butthe cutting of the WAA linenow allows through traffic. There were plenty of well-formed Gypsum crystals toobserve at the base of thesesmall hills. Any brief stop gaveZane a chance to stretch andget some relief from hispainful back. He had a bulgingdisc and was told that heshould not attempt the tripbut, typical man, had done allthe work to get his vehicle set up and was going to just grin and bear it! He did and never complained. I had someidea of what he was experiencing. I had a decompressive laminectomy (L3 – L5) a few months after doing aSimpson crossing 4 years ago. The back, with the constant pounding had got to the point where the surgeon said Ihad no other option but the knife. We took regular breaks to allow Zane to bravely soldier on. Zane’s father Jimhelped out with the driving, whilst Zane spent much time flat on his back in the rear seat allowing son Keaton to bein charge of radio communications. Keaton really enjoyed himself:

‘The whole trip was great. It was fun going up and over the sand dunes and through the mud. We tried to countevery sand dune but we didn’t get very far. Me, Jackson and Dominic were responsible for the fire. We liked to askquestions to Cliff and he always knew the answer.Jackson and I loved swimming at the Mungerannie water hole.I really enjoyed seeing the wedged-tailed eagles on the Birdsville Track.Didn’t like the flies all the time but being away from everyone was nice.’

Keaton GoddardI was intending to camp just south of the Knolls in a small Eucalypt woodland but it was early afternoon so wepushed on and camped just before 4 pm on a flat clayed area nestled between the junctions of two small dunes. Noshade because this part of the desert has no trees and is mainly grasses and small woody shrubs. We made themost of the shade that the vehicles could give us and pitched the Gazebo once again to give us some relief from theflies. After sharing some discussion with us oldies, the youngsters had re-charged their batteries and they headed forthe dunes to have a great time playing in the clean whitish sand. Dinner after sunset and a cosy fire to sit and watchand be mesmerised by finished off another wonderful day. The nights had been perfect with a near full moon for thewhole trip. The convoy gave me an 8/10 for the choice of site despite the fact there were no flushing toilets.

Maundy Thursday saw us starting on schedule and continuing down to the WAA line where we turned west. Thispart of the Desert was very different to what we had seen before but was still interesting. We shared the leadaround a bit hoping to catch a glimpse and a photo of the dromedaries I had ordered for the day. We also swappedpassengers around to mix things up a bit and keep everybody alert and interested. At one stage there was 140 yearsof knowledge and experience in one vehicle. This WAA line, which never has had much vegetation and being almostcentral in the Desert, receives minimal rainfall. The track has now been blown out and many interesting sandsculptures were observed as we swayed from side to side through the dunes. No camels, no dingoes, and no largewildlife at all!

The run south down the Erabena Track saw us skipping along quite quickly on the earth-formed road. Occasionallythe bad corrugations on some sections slowed us but the change of vegetation to Desert Cassia interspersed withsome other Acacia’s was most pleasant and with lead changes and people swapping vehicles, the time went quickly. We were at the Lone Gum by 11.30 am and took another break for Zane to stretch. We reached the Rig Roadjunction at 12 and headed west stopping for a quick lunch at 12.30 pm. The Rig Road was also good travelling andhad not been used much in recent times. The summer winds had reshaped the dunes and the usual sidewaysheaving caused by wind blowing out the vehicle tracks had not yet occurred. If fact we found many dunes with avery sharp drop-off on the western side which was invariably 3-4 metres. I was glad we were not travelling from thewest because the lead vehicle would be doing some heavy work smoothing out the dunes so that it would not gethung up on front and rear bars. We camped 395 Km from Birdsville in the worst camp site I had selected for the trip.We were just short of the WAA line and parked in a sandy clay pan which looked OK from a distance but one side ofthe site had prickles and care was needed with setting up camp. Gazebo again for happy hour and a discussion aboutthe different classifications of the land we had been travelling through. We had passed through Pastoral Lease,National Park, Conservation Park, and were now in a Regional Reserve, and the next day we would enter anotherNational Park. Each of these classifications for land use has different conservation values and requirements but to theuneducated they all appear the same: remote desert with little or no infra-structure and a big playground for theexperienced traveller. The heat was taking its toll and despite a beautiful night sky and the chance to revisit itsastronomy we headed for early bed. That night we had some excitement in the camp: ‘on the second or third nightof the Simpson Desert trip a dingo came up to the end of my swag - and it was so cool. We saw another dingo whilewe were driving and it was white. It was not on the track.’‘There was more than one hundred sand dunes. Cliff was the only one who went up Big Red and got bogged on thedip at the top’. ‘Me and Dominic went up to look and there was another vehicle there stuck on Big Red. A Toyotafrom another group got us out.’‘IT WAS THE BEST TIME EVER!’ Jackson Brooks

We had heard from other travellers at BigRed that one group had some difficultyaround Purni Bore and were stuck there forseveral days. In fact one vehicle, withsnorkel, had got water into the engine andhad been towed back to Mt Dare. Thevehicles we saw at Big Red were covered inmud and I was wondering if we would haveany problems but up to this point all the saltlakes were relatively dry and easy totraverse. The Birdsville track had had anumber of ‘car washes’ but was certainlyopen to high clearance vehicles and otherthan the creek crossings was in great shape. The recent rain had settled the dust nicelyand smoothed out minor ruts. Coober Pedy,a week prior to us leaving, had received 100mm of rain which caused considerabledamage to roads and dwellings around the

Stuart Highway but Birdsville recorded only a few millimetres and this was evident in the eastern part of the Desert. The road from Coober Pedy to Mt Dare was closed but was likely to open shortly. Little point worrying about whatyou are not sure about. I had checked at the Police Station in Birdsville and there were no notices about any roadclosures so why worry.Good Friday was going to be a run into Mt Dare with frequent stops for Zane, a shower at Purni if required, a swimin the thermal pools at Dalhousie, pump tyres up to 2/3 highway pressure and if the Spring Creek Delta wascooperative we would be drinking cold beer in Mt Dare by 4 pm. Well that was the plan and it was a lovely drivealongside some of the really big dunes as we headed north to the French Line. We got into Purni at 11.15 am andhad a look around. There were people camped there. Another group also came in from the east and had a lookaround. These two groups were the first people we had seen since leaving Big Red.We had passed through the section where that other group had some problems but the sand and clay was nowdrying out quickly. It was still very warm so a swim at Dalhousie was required. As we were pulling out of Purni ayoung fellow in a ‘Landy’ waved me down so we stopped and chatted for a while. He was keep to find out about theDesert and had just come through the Spring Creek Delta area which with the slightest drop of rain just becomes asticky ooze. This very ancient flat clay pan can be a nightmare and stops people getting into or out of the Desert ifwet. It was wet and there was a lot of water lying in the tracks but the Land Rover had deviated around the wetsections. I had intended to use the Salt Bush as a marker for a more sandy sub-surface, an old bush trick, so was notparticularly concerned. As he drove off he said ‘there were some serious corrugations just short of Dalhousie’. Ididn’t think much about his last comment until a bit later.

Technical (Peter Young):Peter called for questions from the Members, but none were received. He brought to the attention of members thatbead breakers may not always suit the vehicle they are being carried. He encouraged members used to having 16inch wheels to review whether their bead breaker suits current wheels (eg. 17 inch wheels). He advised that in futuremeetings he will provide some pictures to demonstrate how he carries spare parts on his vehicles when space is at apremium (as it often is on longer trips). Peter also suggested all members should carry “Ocker Bolts”.

Discount Purchasing (Steve Golley)Steve discussed his concerns about 4WDers camping at ‘The Common’ at Innamincka and refusing to pay the smallcamping fee. Concern was expressed that this may damage the club’s reputation. He then went on to advise thatasbestos work at Kudriemitchie has now been completed and that there was not now as much ‘work’ required forthe Kudriemitchie working bee as first thought but he encouraged people to still attend the working bee there.

We had navigated the water in the Delta without drama and were skipping along quite nicely on the hard well-formedearth road into Dalhousie when I looked in the rear vision mirror and could not see the convoy. Whoops, I had relaxedhaving navigated through the Delta and was trying to work out how I could capture on film the enormity of thelandscape. This area is an extremely large sand/clay plain rimmed by low hard-capped hills and in the afternoon sunwas most attractive and benign looking. Some people I have travelled with before have nightmares about this sectionhaving been caught in it for several days when it was completely under water and the track was not at all visible. Iwas determined to get a photo but no photo would do it justice. I stopped and waited for the dust trails to close up.It was only later that I realised the long wheel base of the 200 Series, KDDS suspension, the new springs and shockshad given me a fairly comfortable ride. This is what Domenic told his mother when he arrived home: ‘Guess whatmum! Dad had problems with his car; a coolant hose rubbed through and pink coolant went everywhere in theengine, the passenger side door panel got ripped off, a rock got thrown up by a passing car and chipped our frontwindscreen twice, the UHF radio antenna snapped and our English sand flag snapped.

There were two other kids there. Their names were Jackson and Keaton. We all talked on the UHF radios, kicked thefooty together, swam together in natural bores (They were so relaxing after 3 days in the Simpson with no shower),went down sand dunes on cardboard and a skate board, looked for fire wood together and started the fire.

We all like digging Cliffs 200 series out of the top of BIG RED. It was fun and challenging to try to find tracks toMount Dare to avoid bonnet height mud and water. All in all a fantastic way to spend my Easter school holidays!!!!!!!!! Domenic Berry

We arrived at Dalhousie Springs about 2 pm and as we were swimming, eating, pumping up tyres, two vehiclesrolled in covered in mud from head to toe. They had taken 3 hours to get to the hot springs from Mt Dare and theysaid it was very wet. Situation normal to the last time I had been here! We had a brief team meeting and I suggestedit would be a bit slow getting into Mt Darewhere we were expected. It is a distance of 70Km which normally takes, if stopping for plants, wildlife, and photographs about 1.5 hours tops. Isuggested I was quite happy to camp at thecampground adjacent to the springs if they hadhad enough driving for the day. It was certainlynot cramped and there were flushing toilets. No,to a man, and a boy, they all wanted to get intoMt Dare Hotel. Bit of pressure here! Had I talkedup the freshly baked bread, steaks, cold beer, and wine at Mt Dare too much? I suggested thateverybody don reef sandals or clogs and get towropes ready just in case we had to do sometowing in the mud. The road into Mt Dare ismainly gibber plain with numerous creekcrossings, so the Bush rule is to stay on the gibbers and in the middle of the track. Agree, but constant washing thecar in muddy water is not good for hot differentials, brakes etc. At the very deep and long pools of water across theroad if possible we drove around them. That slowed us and of course when we got onto the flood plain of theAbminga around Mt Dare it was saturated. We had made quite good time until less than a kilometre from Mt Dare,Michael Brooks just ran out of traction in a very deep wet section of the road as he tried to cross over to the drierside. A quick extraction and onto Mt Dare arriving about 5.30 pm. The homestead is not situated in a very good placeand is surrounded by a 2 metre levee which keeps the flood waters out of the Hotel and Campground.

It was a long day and our most eventful one. Nothing that a hot shower, a flushing toilet, and sitting at a table withsomebody else doing the cooking and washing up would not fix. We celebrated, recorded on film our last nighttogether, and adjourned to a cosy campfire for Port and coffee to solve the problems of the world.

All of the early concerns about running a Club Trip and not having harmony with a good mix of adventure andchallenges were gone. The young people were a joy to work with and loved the daily challenges of Maths andScience questions which were way beyond the cognitive demand that they would get in their normal classrooms. They accepted the responsibilities their fathers gave them, the trip group roles they were designated, and never oncedid I hear a grumble about the trip. I suspect there were a few mutterings some late afternoons when we pushing onbit but nothing that did detract from the adventure and harmony of the group. In fact they got into a routine veryquickly with their fathers and were reminding me what had to be done and when, such as to record the rating of thecampsite. They pleaded for more questions, and were polite enough to ask if they could put another log on the fire. The Dads; well they enjoyed themselves and turned out to be a great bunch that enjoyed the challenge of theDesert. They were always keen to learn why I did things a certain way. It would be difficult to find a nicer group ofpeople to share a fly-free Gazebo, a cold beer, and a campfire with.

Saturday morning we said our fond farewells and Ron and I pulled out about 10 am heading for a pizza and motelroom in Coober Pedy. The others had decided to have a lazy start and head back slowly down the Oodnadatta Track. It was not possible to fill up completely at Mt Dare so accurate fuel consumption figures are not available. I took onboard 50 L of diesel at Mount Dare and that saw me through to Coober Pedy. Mt Dare had been isolated with therain for two weeks and some fuel in drums had been brought in on the back of a Ute to satisfy the needs of eastbound travellers which were higher priority than us who had conquered the Simpson. It was a very quick run intoCoober Pedy through a very green Moon Plain which would have been no good for Mad Max. Fuel consumption wasabout 6 KmL-1 because the quick trip into Coober would have been around 7 KmL-1. We had been in Coober forsome time and I still had the radio on and I heard Michael Brooks come over on Channel 10. The others had changedtheir minds. Something to do with ‘we’ll never stop, stop, stop ‘till we are top, top, top’ ..…

PRODUCT UPDATESmart Start® SeriesAustralia’s most trusted dual battery isolator just got even better! The Redarc Smart Start® Series has recently undergone a design upgrade.

The Smart Start® units now feature an overmoulded control unit which provides enhanced environmental performance. The overmould also enhances the appearance of the Smart Start® series.

The Smart Start® units also incorporate an enhanced cable fastener method, simplifying installation and removing the need for a separate spring washer.

These changes are a result of the REDARC commitment to innovation and continuous improvement of our product offerings, just part of the REDARC promise.
