Paris agreement
• At COP21 in Paris in December 2015:• 195 countries adopted Paris Agreement• 1st ever universal, legally binding global climate deal• Effective when 55 countries totaling more than 55% of global emissions
ratified the agreement
• On 4th November 2016, the agreement entered into legal force• 180 parties have ratified the agreement – September 2018• Position of the WBA : Key instruments for achieving Paris Agreement
Goals – Fossil Fuel Exit Strategy and Carbon Tax

Global Energy Supply
• Global energy supply dominated by fossil fuels
• Coal, Oil and Natural Gas supply 82% of global energy
• Biomass is the largest renewable energy source supplying 10% of the world with basic energy needs for electricity, heat and transportation

Global Energy Consumption
• In energy consumption, Renewables account for 17.7% of the total energy consumption
• Bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source globally.

Share of biomass in energy consumption
• Bioenergy share in final energy consumption is 14% - most of it is in the form of traditional biomass
• Only 0.4% of biomass is used for electricity sector while heating remains the main use sector of biomass

Global Electricity Generation
• Coal still remains the largest energy source for electricity generation globally.
• Hydropower is the 3rd largest electricity source
• Electricity from biomass (Biopower) accounted for 528 TWh – an increase of 3 times since 2000
• Wind and Solar have shown tremendous increase in recent years
Official Supporter of WBA: Enerstena Group of Companies
Electricity generation from renewables
• Biomass is the 3rd largest renewable electricity generating source after hydropower and wind power
• Biomass generated more than twice the amount of electricity than solar PV globally

Derived Heat
• Derived heat is heat generated in power plants for industrial and commercial use
• It does not include traditional use of heat (e.g. biomass for residential heating/cooking)
• Fossil fuels supply 93% of the global heat
• Biomass is the only renewable energy source for the heating sector with a possibility to replace fossil fuels on large scale

Energy use in transport
• Transport sector is a major challenge for decarbonization
• Oil and Natural gas account for 96% of energy needs for transport sector while bioenergy contributed 3%
• Large scale electrification of transport fleet is a long way to go
Official Supporter of WBA: Enerstena Group of Companies
Global use of energy in transport – biofuels
• The use of biofuels in transport is more than twice as much as the use of electricity
• Biofuels sector is growing at a faster rate than electrification
• Approx. 76 Mtoe (~ 3.2 EJ) of biofuels were used in transport sector in 2015

Specialized sectors of bioenergy
Biogas- 58.7 BNm3 Pellets – 30 Mt Charcoal – 52 Mt

Jobs in renewable energy
• Bioenergy generates millions of jobs.
• Globally, more than 3 million jobs were generated in the sector – 2nd only to solar energy in the renewable energy sector
Official Supporter of WBA: Enerstena Group of Companies
Development directions of Bioenergy globally• Market development shift towards Asia and Africa – increasing pellets
trade, technology transfer • Biomass resources shift – towards greater use of agriculture residues
and non-woody biomass• Development of efficient and cheap cooking stoves• Switch from fossil fuels to biomass in District heating• Development of cogeneration• Faster development of liquid biofuels for transportation• Biogas – environmental solution, not only energy
