CE 170 – Principles of Environmental Engineering
Importance of Water Filtration
Water filtration is necessary to clean dirty or murky water for human
consumption. This is an important part of human society and
infrastructure, but is especially important in the 3rd world and
developing countries
Objective
Design and build a dual media water filter cell capable of
removing turbidity from two gallons of muddy water
Design
Washed Sand
Layer of Coffee Filters
Washed Charcoal
Coarse Aggregate
Mesh
~1in
~5in
~5in
Materials Used
Garden Liner Mesh
Coarse Aggregate
Lowe's Bucket
Sand
Crushed Charcoal
Coffee Filters
Procedure
1.Drilled holes in the bottom of the bucket2.Lined bottom with garden liner mesh3.Thoroughly washed coarse aggregate,
charcoal, and sand4.Added about 5 inches of washed coarse
aggregate, topped with coffee filters5.Added about 5 inches of washed charcoal,
topped with coffee filters6.Added about 1 inch of washed sand on top
Final Product
The filter cell is positioned above an empty bucket, which is used as a
clear well. The muddy water is then poured above the filter cell.
Test Run DataFlow Rate:
Trial #1: 0.148 gpmTrial #2: 0.240 gpmTrial #3: 0.210 gpm
Average: 0.199 gpm
Turbidity:Initial Turbidity 2805 ntu
After Test 13.4 ntu
Conclusion
Given that the filter cell operates at an average output flow rate of 0.2 gpm, the 2 gallons of muddy water should take approximately 10
minutes to pass through the filter. The filter is expected to eliminate at least 70 percent of the
turbidity from the muddy water sample. Our Sample came out to 99.5 percent of the
turbidity.
