Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – The Power of Fasting Jesus provides a marvelous example for us as we continue the beginning of our Lenten journey. Many of us have forgotten the great blessing and strengthening that fasting provides for us. When we fast from food, we understand more vividly how each meal is a blessing from God and God shows us our need to rely on Him for sustenance. Fasting must not simply pertain to food however. We can fast from false gods like our Lord did in the desert. We can fast from overuse of social media, technology, desire for power or recognition, sloth, or selfish use of our material resources. As we enter into the desert with the Lord for the next 40 days, let us pray for the gift of generosity and the grace to lead more simple lives, lives that radiate joy and hope in the most important thing: salvation in Christ. Pope Benedict XVI stated that “through fasting and praying, we allow Him (God) to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God.” archstl.org/dynamic

Finding Common Ground When we are in conversation with others about our faith, it is greatly beneficial for us to find common ground with another person and build on it. Sometimes this common ground is a passion for baseball or the St. Louis Cardinals; sometimes it is a love of history or trivia. The possibilities are endless. What is essential is that we find a place upon which we can build. Friendships are formed on the basis of a common interest. When we learn that another person shares our interest and passion for something, we are more free to connect with them on deeper levels. Therefore, embrace the common ground and endeavor to be an instrument of unity and reconciliation rather than division. Use this starting point to lead another person to Christ and the more important things in life.

THIS WEEK’S READINGS: The reassuring message of our sacred scriptures today is that God will not forget us. We can trust in our loving God who cares for us more than for any other creature. We can rest in God alone and set aside our concerns about the future. As we take in this message today, let us look for places in our own lives where we can learn to trust God more. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What practical commitment—to which charity or person—can I make before Lent begins this Wednesday so that my prayer, fasting, and almsgiving will reflect Jesus’ radical call to trust?

Resisting Happiness: Resisting God Week One - SOMETHING IS MISSING Read Chapters 1–6 Prayer: Loving Father, Open our hearts and minds and allow us to see the beauty of our faith. Show us what is possible and fill us with the grace, strength, and wisdom to live all the good things we explore here together. Send your Spirit upon us so that we can discover your dream for us to become the-best-version-of-ourselves, and have the courage to defend and celebrate this true self in every moment of our days. We ask you to bless in a special way the hungry, the lonely, the sick, and the discouraged. Remind us of our duty toward them and inspire us to be filled with a profound gratitude. We ask all this through your Son, Jesus. Amen. Questions 1. What is one way that you have encountered resistance? 2. Are you as happy as you could be? In chapter two of Resisting Happiness, the author asks us to give ourselves a happiness score between 1 and 10 over the past three months. What score would you give yourself? 3. Lent is a great time to take a step back and look at our lives. In what area of your life do you need to place God at the center? 4. Have you ever wanted something good for someone more than they wanted it for themselves? 5. What hard battle are you fighting? 6. In chapter five, the author says we are called to put ourselves in the middle of the mess of the world and work to make a difference, however small. What does that mean to you in light of the Lenten call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving? 7. Has restlessness ever pushed you to become a-better-version-of-yourself? The Dynamic Catholic Prayer Loving Father, I invite you into my life today and make myself available to you. Help me to become the-best-version-of-myself by seeking your will and becoming a living example of your love in the world. Open my heart to the areas of my life that need to change in order for me to carry out the mission and experience the joy you have imagined for my life. Inspire me to live the Catholic faith in ways that are dynamic and engaging. Show me how to best get involved in the life of my parish. Make our community hungry for best practices and continuous learning. Give me courage when I am afraid, hope when I am discouraged, and clarity in times of decision. Teach me to enjoy uncertainty and lead your Church to become all you imagined it would be for the people of our times. Amen.

ST. JOACHIM CATHOLIC SCHOOL “JESUS ROCKS!”

DINNER AND AUCTION MARCH 25, 2017

The St. Joachim Catholic School Auction Committee cordially invites you to the school’s annual dinner and auction on March 25, 2017. The theme for this year is “Jesus Rocks”, with a 1950s décor. DON’T FORGET to get your ticket for the Auction! You must reserve your seat in advance for $20 per person. PLEASE DO SO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that you can have a seat! Once the seating tickets sell out, a limited number of “standing room only” tickets will be sold. These tickets do not include dinner or a guaranteed seat. No actual ticket is being issued. Every ticket ordered and paid for is being entered on a spreadsheet by the school secretary. This spreadsheet will be at the door when you enter for the evening. It will include your name and a table number and will be checked off as people enter. If you have made a seating request you will be with your group. All requests for group seating should be sent to the school secretary.

Encounter Lent. We are called to build a culture of encounter. Jesus made that clear from the way he lived, the message he preached. Pope Francis makes that clear by his own daily example. And we have a host of holy men and women who have come before us, who have gone to the margins of society so that every member of our human family might know the love of God. Now, it’s our turn. With the spiritual pillars of Lent at our disposal, we set out on a 40-day journey, a journey of encounter with ourselves, our neighbors and our God. ◾Through prayer, we encounter Christ, present in the faces of every member of our human family, so often still walking that long road to Calvary. ◾Through fasting, we encounter our own obstacles, those things about ourselves that prevent us from loving God and neighbor. ◾Through almsgiving, we encounter our brothers and sisters around the world, asking what we can give up so that others might have life to the fullest. Lent is our time to encounter, to cultivate a spirit of global solidarity. CRS Rice Bowl is our tool, Catholic Relief Services‘ Lenten faith-in-action program for families and faith communities, a vehicle through which the stories of communities around the world can be shared, an invitation through which our prayers and Lenten sacrifices can change lives. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we hear stories from our brothers and sisters in need worldwide, and devote our Lenten prayers, fasting and gifts to change the lives of the poor. Each day of Lent, individuals are invited to use the Lenten Calendar—included with every CRS Rice Bowl—to guide their Lenten almsgiving. These daily almsgiving activities—for example, give 25 cents for every faucet found in your home—help families reflect on the realities of our brothers and sisters around the world and how they can be in solidarity during the Lenten season. How will you contribute to the culture of encounter this Lent? FIRST WEEK OF LENT - ENCOUNTER INNOVATION We encounter the Singh family in India, where a mother and father are using innovative farming techniques to feed their family amidst a flood. How is God inviting us to think outside the box in service to others this Lent? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

PLEASE JOIN US! On March 18th, following the 4:00 pm Mass we will have a St. Patrick’s Day, Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner. The St. Anne’s Sodality will be providing the meal. Cost of the meal will be $8 for adults and $4 for ages 12 and under. We will also be having a “Cake Walk” so if any lady member would like to provide an extra dessert that would be great! Join us for a great evening of fellowship and fun!

Also enjoy a bunch of additional features like prayers, daily readings, helpful reminders to silence your phone before Mass or Confession, and much more.

Ash Wednesday Environment When we come to church on Ash Wednesday or for the rest of Lent, we find that the environment has changed. The color is violet; there are no flowers; the church building is more barren and more somber. Many parishes use bare branches as part of the decor or cacti to remind us of the desert. This environment is to invite us into the penitential season of Lent. It is to focus us on the essentials of our spiritual life so that we may learn to imitate Jesus more completely and thus prepare for the celebration of the resurrection at Easter. Lenten Change Lent is about change. It calls us to change our attitudes; it calls us to change our habits; and it prays that God will change our hearts. Sometimes when we do things differently we can awaken the presence of God in our lives. Try this: tomorrow morning brush your teeth using your left hand (if you’re right-handed). You will immediately notice how much focus it requires. It’s the same with our worship. Sometimes we need to do things differently just to appreciate their meaning. That’s part of the reason for the change of liturgical seasons, a simple sign that we are willing to allow God to move us from wherever we are to wherever God wants us to be.
