Tsunami Waste Management, Tsunami Waste Management, IndonesiaIndonesia
• Large volumes of tsunami generated wastes
• Government capacity limited (loss of staff and waste vehicles)
• All Municipal Solid Waste systems stopped (dumped in street)
• Gov. contractors undertook initial clearance to recover bodies and improve access to impacted areas
• Majority of tsunami waste dumped in inappropriate areas – fish ponds, rice paddies, ditches, land close to residential areas

Summary of Experiences from Summary of Experiences from TsunamiTsunami• Waste management is a significant environmental & public
health issue.
• waste management is an important recovery phase issue
• Lack of baseline waste data indicates little or no waste assessment
• Emergency phase waste clean-up operations can worsen environmental problems and require remedial action
• Uncontrolled scavenging and inappropriate clean-up exposes workers to health and safety risks
• Waste management advice and projects are not coordinated and often sector specific
• The potential value of waste was not realised
• Lack of Waste Management skills at national and international level
• Global environmental impacts have been ignored

Following the hostilities:
> 10 million tonnes of rubble
Damage scattered over whole province
Asbestos contamination widespread
Limited resources in Kosovo to perform demolition
