September Calendar 24
A very successful club championship week was completed in August. Congratulations to our lady’s champion, Kim Walker, and to our men’s champion, Ryan McNall, who won an incredibly exciting eight hole playoff
with Tyler Wright. Congratulations as well to all of our individual flight winners. Championship Sunday was capped off by the induction of Graham Coulter into the Wascana Country Club Hall of Fame. Our Club has been in existence for over 100 years. It is important that we recognize those people who have con-tributed significantly to the Club. Graham was a very deserving recipient of the induction. It was great to see him back at the Club and to hear him both
speak and renew acquaintances. The Championship weekend is an opportunity for individual Members to complete in their flights in what I think we would all agree was a very friendly environment. It is also a chance to meet other Members. Next year we will try and encourage more of our Members to participate. A reminder that the annual Members information meeting is scheduled for
September 24th. There will be a number of items on the agenda, including a report on the completion of Phase I of the Strategic Plan and the implementation of Phase II. This is the Members opportunity to attend and raise any questions with both the Board and our General Manager. Aaron A. Fox, President

Course Pride Program Keep our course immaculate!
Repair your ball marks – while you’re at it - repair one more! Maintain the proper pace of play – it’s important to those behind you! Power carts must be kept away from all tees and greens.
Follow the wooden blocks, the signage system and cart entry and exit poles – these will guide power carts. (See Diagram)
Rake all bunkers upon exit – it’s the right thing to do. Replace/sand your divots to protect the fairways! Sand your divots on all tee boxes.

Fall Greens Aeration
September 24th & 25th
We requested that our United States Golf Association Consulting agronomist make a visit to our
property this year. Due to his heavy workload including overseeing the agronomy at many USGA
major golf tournaments he was unavailable to attend until Thursday, August 23rd. All areas of the
golf course were reviewed and an complete update will be available on the member only portion of
our website effective September 25th. Additionally this will be spoken to at the scheduled Fall
Meeting of the Membership on Sept. 24.
Of particular note the sponginess and dampness of the greens was reviewed. The greens have been
identified as currently having too much organic matter in them and as such there is a black layer in
most greens preventing proper drainage. Notably we will begin a more aggressive cultural practice of
aeration commencing Sept. 24 and 25 this year. Subject to weather, it will be necessary to aerate the
greens each spring and fall on an ongoing basis. Similarly, we will be commencing a regular
schedule for aeration of the fairways at this same time subject to weather.
We are intending to keep this and all major cultural practices necessary away from the prime season
golfing months. We thank all members for your understanding.

Wascana Mixed League
Wascana Mixed League…. BINGO!
On Thursday August 9th, 32 Wascana Mixed League teams played the 4th game
of our season.
Teams recorded their gross scores, and kept track of when they hit the water,
sand or the trees. Once back in the clubhouse, the game was revealed as a bingo
game. Thanks to a bingo kit and bingo
dabbers donated by Jim Pageot of Bazaar and Novelty, we enjoyed the full, bin-
go experience.
Our callers, Frank Verhelst and Greg Love led us through the game, using a spe-
cial bingo card that had “numbers” like “3 putt on Hole 6”, and “in the water on
any hole”. Teams matched their actual golf scores to the called number and their
bingo card.
It took 14 calls for us to reach a bingo, with Judy Davis and Murray Westerlund taking home the honours.
They will enjoy a $100 gift certificate for The Cottage, a $40 gift certificate for the casino, and $20 worth of scratch
-and-win lottery tickets, as will Michael and Karen O’Brien, who won the door prize for the evening.
Many thanks to Brewsters (Lanigans) and Galon Insurance (Galons) for
sponsoring the evening by donating several prizes. Thanks also to Blake Ber-
glund, our entertainer from Music on the Greens, who donated his CD as a
prize. The following teams took home sponsorship prizes: Margaret Hun-
tington and Wayne Back, Ed and Twyla Meredith, John
Hudson and Lorna Dewar, Bill and Janet Johnson, Jim and
Kathie Werschler, Art and Joyce Marbach, Carmen Giblett
and Marilee Lazar, Judy Giblett and Wayne Lazar, Debra
Duncan and Craig Adam, Michael and Karen O’Brien and
Leo and Sandy Verhelst. The Galon’s also gave another opportunity to win by donating special scratch-
and-win bingo cards where we could have won $1000 with the right combination of scratched numbers.
Wascana Mixed League plays for-fun 9 hole games (shotgun start) on selected Thursdays throughout the summer.
We have one more event scheduled, for September 13th. If you are interested joining us please email The Wascana
Mixed Committee at [email protected]. Registrations are welcome from teams and singles. If you can’t
join us for golf, come on out and enjoy some good food and socializing. RSVP’s are required by 6:00 p.m. on the
Sunday prior to the game night.

Food and Beverage Operational Update August 2012
We recognize that our Food and Beverage Operations has struggled to gain the timeliness, consistency and quality we desire to achieve. We recognize we have had some successes, however far too many failures to meet the goals and expectations we are striving for. For this we can only apologize and make a pledge that we not only acknowledge this but are taking steps to remedy this situation.
In the short term we have terminated the employment of some staff, are hiring, training and retraining new staff. We are updating staff schedules in an effort to better meet the membership demands whilst being mindful of operating budgets. We are requesting that departmental supervisors and management take a more “hands on” roll and in particular be more responsible for staff
supervision and service delivery. We are offering specials at high volume times such as after a Monday morning shotgun, Tuesday Ladies’ day, Wednesday men’s night and weekend and holiday brunch and lunch times. We are monitoring and evaluating the speed of delivery on all orders in an effort to become timelier in delivery.
We furthermore have commenced the process of a complete review in the longer term for all areas of food and beverage from Management to required daily standards, to staff recruiting, to training, supervision, coaching and mentoring. We are examining the existing cooking stations, cooking lines, grille areas and prep areas to ensure they can deliver appropriate menu items in a consistent and timely fashion. We intend to review our entire menu choices to ensure that they can be delivered in a professional and timely manner. To this end we have discussed our challenges with some industry consultants and are requesting that they make a series of recommendations as to how we can better
meet our members’ demands as a whole in this area of operation.
Finally, the Management Team are committed to overcoming all obstacles presented in order that our
ultimate vision of enjoying provincial and national status as a premier country club offering pristine playing surfaces, the finest service, programs and amenities to our members and guests is realized.

Message from the Wascana Ladies Club President Shirley Paterson
I was out golfing this morning and it felt like Fall. I shudder to think about that and prefer to look on the more positive side and hope for two more months of golf season.
August was a busy month of golf at the club for the ladies starting with the Chick-a- Dee. This tournament is fun to participate in and should
be a must on your list next year. It fills up early and generally has a waiting list. This year was no exception. The well “oiled” team led by Judy McLean and Deanna Pageot was again a great success.
The Club Championship week started with a “Mystery Partner” golf format game and a luncheon honouring some of our past champions. Sporting the Black Blazer with golf Wascana insignia were:
Kim Walker – Regina, (2005-11) and the 2012 Ladies Club Champion Maija Salmon (McCauley) - Regina (1999) Shirley Klein – Kelowna B.C (1990) Sandra Nelson – Myrtle Beach, S. Carolina, (1981-83, 1985-86, 1996) Helen Burgess – Regina (2004) Jenny Mellor – Regina (1969) Ann Rafuse – Quebec (1977-79, 1988-89) The week ended with a combined Men’s, Ladies and Juniors Club Championship. While the ladies had only seven competing, the weather did
hold up and was celebrated in the Centennial Garden with the awards presentation and Family BBQ.
Congratulations to:
2012 Ladies Club Champion: Kim Walker. Runner –up: Deb Duncan. Seniors Champion: Danica Love. Masters Champion: Helen
Burgess and Low Net: Deanna Pageot. Melinda Carter got a hole in one at an outside course, who knows the next one may be at home.
Capsule Comments!
Coming up in September:
September 7 – 8 – Ladies Wascana Cup with Captains Judy Davis and Danica Love September 22 - Ladies Fall Tournament Sponsored by Dairy Queen, Sheryl Simons (sign-up in front of Business
Ladies Binder) September 25 – Nine Hole Ladies Closing Dinner
The Wascana Ladies Executive Nominating Committee results for the position of Vice-President will be out shortly. Voting will be open for one week and take place on-line, one vote per person. If you do not have email access, a ballot will be available at the Club House for you. Who you vote for, of course is confidential once you fill out the on-line Ballot. Please note all lady members were eligible this year to be
nominated for this position. Welcome to the age of wonderful technology!
I want to end with one final note and that is to wish Sally Ford, a real trouper, great Wascana C.C. supporter and Ladies Past President a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with you every day.
Ladies, enjoy the rest of the golf season and remember there are no problems only opportunities. Cheers
Shirley A. Paterson, Wascana Ladies Club President
