Funding Options Available to Through the Growing Forward 2

Changes to the Farm Stewardship Program—New BMPs

Native Rangeland Grazing Management and Fencing – 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000

Cross fencing to create native rangeland paddocks or to separate adjoining tame pasture from native rangeland.

Plastic Grain Bag Roller – 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $5000

New stand-alone plastic grain bag roller units, units incorporated into a grain bag extractor, and hydraulic components to connect roller system to a tractor.

Carcass Disposal Planning – 75% of eligible costs to a maximum of $30,000

Projects can include carcass burial site location, composting or incineration plans; engaging a professional engineering consultant for the purpose of creating a plan for carcass disposal or preparing required regulatory reports; and installation and implementation of disposal equipment.

Environmental Solutions – 20%-50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000

Funding level and caps will vary based on the project’s environmental benefit.

Changes to Existing BMPs

For a complete listing of all changes, including eligibility criteria, contact Financial Programs Branch at 1-877-874-5365 or visit: www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/GrowingForward2

Used Oil Storage50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $2000

Double wall steel storage tank designed for the temporary storage of used oil. Eligible tanks must have a ULC approved stamp or plate indicating it is for the purpose stated above (ULC-652).

Water Flow and Erosion Control

Existing agriculture drainage works which have not been constructed properly and managed effectively may cause significant impacts on downstream water quality and quantity. This BMP provides assistance to producers to improve private drainage works by implementing approved drainage stewardship practices including installation of water control and erosion control structures, reshaping drainage ditches and seeding perennial forage in waterways. The outcome of this BMP will be improved storage of water on landscape, reduced velocity of water moving across the landscape and reduced soil erosion and sedimentation.

50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $20,000

Eligible projects are existing drainage works that were constructed prior to April1, 2013.

The Farm Stewardship Program

The Farm Stewardship Program (FSP) provides eligible Saskatchewan producers with financial assistance to implement beneficial management practices (BMPs) to help maintain or improve the quality of soil, water, air, or biodiversity resources.

The program includes 24 BMPs under seven categories. These categories include:

• Livestock Site Management

• Manure Management

• Land Management

• Irrigation Management

• Agriculture Waste Management

• Precision Farming

• Environmental Solutions

Farm and Ranch Infrastructure Program

The Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP) supports the development of secure water supplies in Saskatchewan to expand irrigated acres, the livestock industry, encourage rural economic activity and mitigate the impacts of drought under four program categories:

• On-Farm

• Agricultural Business Development

• Community Well

• Irrigation District

ALUS Saskatchewan expands to the Wascana- Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds

LUS (Alternative Land Use Services) is a new model for conservation, one that recognizes and empowers the key role of farmers, ranchers and local communities. ALUS

offers an exciting way for those interested in the health of the land to make a positive impact on the environment that is real, tangible, verified and makes sense. ALUS focuses on the productive capability of the farmers and ranchers on the land while creating new value around nature’s benefits.

Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) has a simple goal…create a healthy landscape that sustains agriculture, wildlife and natural spaces for all Canadians. ALUS focuses on the working landscape where important opportunities for conservation action exist. We encourage and support farmers and ranchers to use their skills and intimate knowledge of their working lands to return marginal or environmentally sensitive areas into natural ecosystems that produce nature’s benefits for all of society.

ALUS restoration and conservation projects across the country produce benefits for all Canadians, including clean water, clean air, erosion and flood control, and habitat for pollinators, fish and wildlife. Ensuring our drinking water is safe means protecting it at the source. Providing habitat for pollinating insects allows food crops to grow, feeding our families.

ALUS is a system that allows market dollars to address conservation needs in specific communities across the country, while leveraging farmers’ skills in the production of nature’s benefits. ALUS farmers and ranchers are paid annually for the benefits from nature they produce based on fair market value. ALUS was brought to Saskatchewan by Delta Waterfowl, the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds, the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. ALUS Saskatchewan would like to recognize the support of the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, and the Mississippi Duck Stamp, our major funders of ALUS Projects. With the support of these organizations ALUS is expanding into two Saskatchewan Watersheds: the Wascana-Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds and the Assiniboine Watershed.

“…ALUS-to me that was the greatest advancement for conservation ever conceived! It works with – not against the landowner and the land itself.” – Richard Baker, Former Conservation District Manager and Former Land and Water Instructor
