WALKING FOR PLEASURE
WALKS PROGRAMME &
NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2015
www.eastsurreywalkers.org.uk
East Surrey Walkers OCT-DEC 2015 Page 2 of 20
Chairman’s Chatter Talking to members I'm left with the impression that
many have been alternating home and away with
short breaks all over the place during the summer. I
was on the very enjoyable ESW holiday walking
along Hadrian's Wall at the end of June. I hope you
all enjoyed both your time away and walking nearer
home. We've had a mostly dry summer which has
made for easy walking, although perhaps we haven't
had as much sunshine as some years. Our main
social event of Q3 was a delightful barbecue in
Rosie's lovely garden.
Looking forward the programme includes an
excellent range of walks for the autumn and early
winter, always an attractive time as the leaves turn colour and thin out. We also
have a skittles evening on Saturday 10th October at the Royal British Legion,
Limpsfield, details are near the end of this newsletter.
We've mentioned the Ramblers Big Pathwatch a couple of times on our Notice
Board and you should have seen it in Walk magazine and in Ramblers emails, if
you are signed up to these. The projects main goal is a one off, up to date
report, on every footpath in the country. If you haven't already done so please
look at the information on the national Ramblers website
http://www.ramblers.org.uk/ and sign up to check out the paths in one or more
1x1 km squares. If you have any problems with this please contact Tony
Pearson at [email protected].
Judy Brua and John Nathan have organised a group walking holiday in Southern
Spain for April 2016. The holiday was booked out 24hrs after its release to ESW
members. However there is still plenty of time to organise other group holidays
for next year, suggestions and offers of help welcome!
Our AGM will be on Saturday 7th November at St Andrew's church hall,
Limpsfield Chart. The AGM follows a buffet lunch, and a morning walk for those
inclined. We had a good turnout last year and I hope to see you there this year:
it's an easygoing event.
In the meantime enjoy your walking!.

Our Walks
The walks in the screen and website
versions of the programme are colour
coded to aid selection:
White Half-day circular walks
Blue Short Ambles
Green All day circular walks
Yellow Midweek linear walks
Beige Other days
Ambles We now have a selection of short Ambles in the programme - these are typically
circular, no more than 3 miles long and on the level, and are meant as
introductory or social walks for those new to rambling, returning after illness or
surgery or simply wanting a shorter, gentler walk for a change. They generally
start (and end) at a venue where sociable cups of tea or coffee can be enjoyed.
They take place on weekdays (other than Wednesdays) on a variable pattern so
please refer to the Walks Programme for details.
East Surrey Walkers OCT-DEC 2015 Page 4 of 20
Circular Walks Two circular walks are held every weekend. We have a full-day walk of around
10-12 miles, usually entailing bringing a picnic lunch, and a shorter walk of
around 5-6 miles. The days for these long and short walks will alternate each weekend. On Wednesdays we also have a short 5-6 mile walk. The shorter walks are usually, but not always, in the morning. Long walks are generally led at a moderate, sometimes brisk, pace, with few stops other than for coffee and
lunch. The short walks are a little slower than this, with a midway coffee break
and a few short stops.
We also have occasional walks on other weekdays.
A mid-walk pub lunch proves to be a popular idea © Brian Smith
Mid-week Linear Walks On these days we tackle Long-Distance Footpaths in convenient stages of
usually 8 - 12 miles. We normally walk on the first and third Wednesday of
each month, and unless otherwise indicated lunch is at a pub where food is
available. Where possible, start and finish points are arranged where public
transport is accessible.
The organisers (Nick and Bryan) will endeavour to co-ordinate travel
arrangements, so if you haven’t been on any of these walks recently please
contact one of us a few days beforehand in case any changes have been made
to the published details. If you wish to make your own way to the walk start,
please make sure you are there before the stated time, and let Nick or Bryan
East Surrey Walkers OCT-DEC 2015 Page 5 of 20
know. Nick maintains an email list of the regular linear walkers and many of us
rely on that for last minute updates.
~~~~
Having just completed the last portion of the Monarch’s Way in September we
are going to tackle the final stages of another long distance path with historic
connections. This is the Shakespeare’s Way. The whole route runs from his
birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon to the Globe Theatre by the Thames in
London. We will pick up the path at Hambleden in Buckinghamshire and
complete the final 52 miles to The Globe in December. We start in the Chilterns
AONB and cross the South Buckinghamshire countryside. The latter stages are
canalside and riverside walks.
Walks Report We are delighted to present to you our Walks Programme for October to December 2015. Please browse through it, make a note of your favourites & come & join us. Please try to arrive 15 minutes before the walk is scheduled to start so that the leader can take your details, introduce the walk & depart promptly. We have over 50 walks this quarter so I hope that several appeal to you. They range in length from 3 to 12 miles, and vary from brisk all day walks to short relaxed ambles. These walks are all made possible by ESW members offering to lead. If you do not already lead please think about doing so – we would appreciate your help towards providing a full programme. Liz
East Surrey Walkers OCT-DEC 2015 Page 6 of 20
Work Party Report Our tasks this last quarter have all involved replacing a single stile with a metal
kissing gate - two in South Nutfield, and one in Horne. Do look out for the little
yellow plaque that announces our efforts.
Owing to the resources problems in Surrey CC Rights of Way, we really haven't
been given enough to do, and certainly not enough to warrant a bigger team.
Hopefully for the autumn there will be some more general clearance work, as
well as construction, and we can involve more volunteers. Even though it can be
quite hard work at times, its always enjoyable being part of a good team, and
there are always plenty of opportunities for laughter, as well Jaffa cakes (if
Barry remembers).
• NOTE: the distance listed is an approximation for g uidance, NOT a guarantee of the actual length of the walk 'on the day'.
Notes about the Walks:  Arrive at least 15 minutes before the stated time - walks start promptly.  Call the leader if you would like more information about the walk or meeting
place, or, in case of severe weather, phone before 8am to check arrangements  For other than half day walks and linear walks (unless otherwise stated) please
bring a picnic lunch to eat in the open air.  Everyone participating in Ramblers walks and other activities does so at their
own risk.  Dogs, under control, are welcome on our walks at the leader's discretion,
except where noted.  Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to
join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
 Most walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk Leader in advance.
 For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk Leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
MEETING POINTS When on-line you can click the link after the OS Grid Reference (GR) - e.g.
TQ426349 - to view a map of the start location.
Post Codes: Following member requests, we are now including the nearest
Post Code along with the Grid Reference of the car park for the start of each
walk. However, it should be noted that this will be the Post Code of the
nearest building to the car park, and therefore may not be as accurate as the
Grid Reference for country car parks.
For the Wednesday LINEAR walks, always confirm the meeting and transport
details with Nick or Bryan beforehand, in case arrangements have changed.
