Welcome......to our programme of Day Excursions forAutumn/Winter 2018. We have been working hardto produce an innovative programme featuring newand unusual destinations, whilst repeating tripsthat we know are traditional favourites with ourcustomers. NEW trips include Jordan’s Mill nearBiggleswade, a trip on the Leighton BuzzardRailway, a tour of Essex with a visit to theChocolate Lady, Winter in Windsor (actually, it’s inOctober) with a chance to visit some rooms in thecastle that are only open in the off season and StGeorge’s Chapel, just a week after PrincessEugenie’s wedding. We have an autumn tints tourthat includes a visit to Tudeley Church, home ofthe amazing Marc Chagall stained glass windows,and, for those that like “Strictly”, a Strictly TeaDance, where you may choose to dance, or just sitand watch the demonstrations. We have a Ghostsof Romney Marsh Tour, a visit to WinkworthArboretum and a trip to the Jules DestrooperBiscuit Factory & the Ypres Christmas Market. Byway of a change, we are going to a Christmas Singalong(singing optional) at Central Hall, Westminster. By populardemand, we are returning to Christmas at Kew,Greyhound Racing at Brighton and our Christmas Lunchtrip is, as last year, a cruise on the Thames. We hope thatyou enjoy reading through the varied selection of tripsthat have been planned and we look forward towelcoming you on board soon.

Wednesday 1st August

Kelmscott Manor Depart Oxted 8.30am (Route A) for the drive toKelmscott Manor, nr. Lechlade, a Grade I listed late 16thcentury Manor House with gardens reaching down to theRiver Thames. The house is best known for its associationswith William Morris who chose it as his summer home,signing a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite painterDante Gabriel Rossetti in the summer of 1871. Morrisloved the house as a work of true craftsmanship, totallyunspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony with the villageand the surrounding countryside with its ‘quaint garretsamongst great timbers of the roof where of old times thetillers and herdsmen slept”. Its beautiful gardens, withbarns, dovecote, a meadow and stream, provided aconstant source of inspiration. The house – perhaps themost evocative of all the houses associated with Morris –contains an outstanding collection of the possessions andworks of Morris, his family and associates (Benson Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Webb amongst them), includingfurniture, original textiles, pictures, carpets, ceramics andmetalwork. You will be at leisure to explore this ManorHouse little changed from William Morris' day with mostof its original timberwork and stone fireplaces still inplace. Return leave 4.30pm. Woolbeding GardensDepart Oxted 9.45am (Route A) for the drive to Midhurst,where we shall have time to find lunch before, earlyafternoon, making the short journey to WoolbedingGardens, one of West Sussex’s best-kept secrets. Wecommence our visit with a 10-minute introductory talk byone of the gardening team, after which we shall be free toexplore. The 26-acre garden is the creation of Mr SimonSainsbury and Stewart Grimshaw. With the help of notablegarden designers Lanning Roper in the 1980s and theBannermans in the late 1990s, Woolbeding has developedinto the modern masterpiece you see today. Thishorticultural haven features follies of elegant architectureand carefully composed garden borders, shaped by some ofthe best contemporary designers and craftsmen and offers aglimpse into English country life of the most luscious andrarefied kind. Tuesday 14th August

Anglesey Abbey, Gardens & Lode Mill, or Cambridge Depart Oxted 8.15am (Route A) for the university town of Cambridge, situated onthe banks of the River Cam, where you will be at leisure to explore. The town has along and varied history – from Roman camp and Saxon market town to Normanmilitary stronghold. In the 13th century the first students appeared - and withthem Cambridge took on the character which still exists today. OR, you may wishto continue on to Anglesey Abbey and spend the day exploring this Jacobean stylehouse built on the site of a 12th century Augustinian priory. When you step intothis elegant home, you journey back to a golden age of country-house living. TheDomestic Wing shows how the staff serving the meticulous Lord Fairhaven ran hishousehold like clockwork. Thursday 16th August

St John’s Nursery & Garden,Etchingham Depart Oxted 10.30am (Route B) for the drive toEtchingham, where hidden away down a sleepy countrylane, a nursery, garden and café lie nestled within theoaks of the High Weald of East Sussex. The romanticeight-acre gardens of King John’s Lodge are as beautifulas they are tranquil, and have captured the hearts ofmany a garden writer, both in the UK and abroad. Withthe stunning house as its backdrop, the grounds boastformal lawns with a fountain and lily pond, a wild gardenwith ancient apple trees, and a meadow. By the front ofthe house, is a secret pond with a woodland walkfeaturing a statue of Titania and Oberon. Nearby, sheepgraze and white fantail pigeons flutter in the picturesqueparkland that surrounds the southern and eastern sides ofthe house and gardens. The nursery was created out oftwo derelict 1950s chicken sheds and the owner’s passionfor growing plants, but has evolved into an escape fromthe usual. Varieties are chosen because they are the mostbeautiful, the hardest to find or are the most exciting newintroductions. There’s an eclectic range of things to buy inthe shop and a beautifully styled rustic café. Return leave2.45pm, arriving back at Limpsfield Chart approx. 4.00pm.

Eastbourne & Airbourne - the biggest air show on thesouth coast Depart Oxted 9.15am (Route B) for Eastbourne where youcan enjoy a day by the sea with a stroll along the pier tovisit the Victorian Tea Rooms and/or visit the ArndaleShopping Centre. Eastbourne is one of the largest resorts onthe South Coast, enjoying a wonderful position on the edgeof the English Channel. Over this weekend they are playinghost to four days of top flight entertainment withAirbourne, their annual International Air Show, featuring thevery best in military and civilian aviation display teamsincluding the RAF Red Arrows, RAF Typhoon, RAF Battle ofBritain Memorial Flight, RAF Tutor, The Blades andAeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers. Monday 20th August

Swanage & Swanage RailwayDepart Oxted 7.45am (Route A) for the drive through theNew Forest to Sandbanks and the ferry to Swanage with itssandy beach lining the wide sweeping bay. Swanagedelightfully combines the charm of a Victorian seaside townwith the conveniences and attractions of a modern touristresort. The Victorian era saw Swanage come alive andtransform from a small quarrying town to a popular seasideresort. Many of the Barges taking stone to London returnedwith unusual gifts from local benefactors: the WellingtonClock Tower, which stands close to the Lifeboat House, onceadorned the southern approach to London Bridge. Those whowish may, mid afternoon, join us on a 1 hour round trip onthe Swanage Railway. The ride will take us from SwanageStation via Harmans Cross, past the dramatic ruins andbeautiful village of Corfe to Norden where there will be a 10minute break before retracing our steps to Swanage. Smoky & the BoatDepart Oxted 8.30am (Route A) for the journey to H. Forman & Son’sfamous smokehouse in East London. Here we shall have a unique tourand tasting, including a fascinating carving demonstration fromFormans’ very own Guinness World Record Salmon slicer, DarrenMatson (who beat Gordon Ramsay in the challenge!) followed by adelicious Forman’s Bagel Picnic Lunch, which can be taken on boardour guided river cruise. The picnic includes Forman’s infamous Londoncure smoked salmon cream cheese Boris bagels with side salad,followed by homemade chocolate brownie treats and a soft drink. Weboard our cruise boat from Forman’s private pontoon and embark onan exclusive two-hour tour of some of the forgotten Rivers of EastLondon, finishing in the beautifully landscaped park lands of TheQueen Elizabeth Olympic Park. As we cruise, we shall see some of themost iconic venues of the Games including the Stadium, ArcelorMittalOrbit, London Aquatics Centre and Lee Valley Velopark and learnfascinating facts about the park and its future from our professionaltour guide. Littlehampton or BognorDepart Oxted 9.00am(Route A) for the drive toeither Littlehampton orBognor to spend a day bythe sea. The small,ancient port ofLittlehampton, situatedat the mouth of the RiverArun, with its promenade,sandy beaches andfunfair is known as afamily seaside resort andyachting centre, although

some of the old town survives on the east bank of theArun. Bognor Regis, a seaside resort with a pier and fivemiles of hard sandy beach, began as a Saxon village,became a medieval fishing hamlet and then, from 1790,developed into a quiet and fashionable seaside wateringplace. The ‘Regis’ was added to Bognor after King GeorgeV convalesced at nearby Aldwick in 1928. Return leave: Bognor Pier 5.00pm Littlehampton 5.30pmArriving back at Godstone by approx. 7.00pm.

Saturday 25th August

Military Odyssey at Detling ShowgroundDepart Oxted 8.00am (Route A) for the drive toDetling Showground, nr Maidstone, and the MilitaryOdyssey, the world’s largest multi-period re-enactment show. Over 4,000 re-enactors and livinghistory enthusiasts cover a vast period of globalhistory, including Romans, Vikings, Medieval,Napoleonic, the American Civil War, the Wild West,World Wars I & II, Vietnam right up to the present day.Regardless of your historical knowledge, there isbound to be something for you. The 200 acre site hastwo separate arenas in addition to the mainbattlefield, where battlefield re-enactments take placeall weekend. There will be a vast array of militaryvehicles from many different eras and nations, someof which take part in re-enactments on thebattlefield, adding to the atmosphere of the battle.Refreshments available. Tuesday 28th August

Rye & TenterdenDepart Oxted 9.15am (Route B) for enchanting Ryewhich, in Elizabethan times was a port, heavily armedwith cannon, but such defences were useless against thetown’s ageless enemy, the sea. Silting was a constantproblem, and as the sea receded it left the town high anddry. It is now some two miles inland. Here you will be atleisure to explore and find lunch. Wander the cobbledstreets, admire the beautiful buildings, many of which areElizabethan, some with Georgian frontages, and enjoy thesuperb range of shops and restaurants which characterisethis famous Cinque Port whose buildings cluster aroundthe top of a little sandstone hill watching over RomneyMarsh and guarding the coastline. Early afternoon wemake our way to the Weald town of Tenterden, held to beWilliam Caxton’s birthplace. It is a market town with oneof the most attractive main streets in the South ofEngland – wide, tree lined and full of Georgian housesand shops with bow fronted windows, porticoeddoorways and shiplapped-timber frontages. Here therewill be time to browse and maybe enjoy afternoon teabefore making our way home. Return leave 5.00pm.Arriving back at Limpsfield Chart by approx. 6.15pm.

Thursday 30th August

Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)Depart Oxted 9.00am (Route A) for the drive toHighclere Castle, home to the Carnarvon family since1679 and with a fascinating connection to ancientEgypt, as the 5th Earl, with Howard Carter, discoveredthe tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. There is anexhibition that commemorates this historic event.Described as the largest occupied mansion inHampshire and the finest inhabited Victorianresidence in all England, the extravagant interiorsrange from church Gothic through Moorishflamboyance and Rococo revival to solid masculinityin the Long Library. The gardens feature greatstretches of glasshouse in a walled garden,magnificent parkland designed by ‘Capability’ Brownand a Secret Garden with a beautiful curving lawnsurrounded by densely planted herbaceous gardens.Downton Abbey, the major drama series from ITV wasfilmed on location at Highclere Castle. Saturday 1st September

Eurotunnel to Plugstreet, thePool of Peace & the Last PostDepart Oxted 5.15am (Route A) for the drive to Folkestoneand the Eurotunnel to Coquelles, France. From here we makeour way to Ploegsteert, or Plugstreet as it was known by theBritish soldiers, where we shall have time to visit thePlugstreet 14-18 Experience. This amazing museum usescutting-edge technology, touch screens and animations topresent the British and German positions in Comines-Warneton as well as the civilians and soldiers’ life in a regiontorn by the war and 4 years of occupation. Whilst in the area,we shall also visit the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missingand the Hyde Park Corner Cemetery. From here we make ourway to Kemmel, where we shall visit some restored Germantrenches before continuing on to Spanbroekmolen MineCrater Memorial — The Pool of Peace. Also known as LoneTree Crater, it is the site of the largest of 19 mines blown bythe British Army in the early hours of the morning of 7th June1917. This signalled the launch of the Battle of Messines. Leighton Buzzard RailwayDepart Oxted 10.30am (Route A) for Page’s Park Station,home of the Leighton Buzzard Railway, which has its roots inthe First World War. Demand for Leighton Buzzard foundrysand soared during the war, and after the armistice, lots ofnarrow-gauge railway equipment - used to supply thebattlefields - became available. The Leighton BuzzardRailway was one of several British lines to be built as a resultof this windfall, but is the only one still operating. Since the1960s, it has been a working museum railway, operated andmanaged by volunteers. On arrival, we shall have some timeto look around the engine shed with its collection of historicmachines from all over the world, including some thatserved in the First World War trenches, and find lunch in therailway café before taking our seats on the 2.30pm train.Starting from Page’s Park station, the railway runs aroundthe edge of the town, and out into the rolling Bedfordshirecountryside, with great views across to the Chiltern HillsArea of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Going at a sedate pace,with sharp curves, steep inclines and level crossings, we shallrelive the long-lost era of the English narrow-gauge lightrailway. Autumn Tints Tour with visit to Tudeley Church & Cream Tea at Teapot Island Depart Oxted 10.00am (Route B) for a scenic drive through the Surrey &Kent countryside to All Saints’ Tudeley: the only church in the world to haveall its twelve windows decorated by the great Russian artist Marc Chagall.On 19th September 1963, Sarah the daughter of Sir Henry and LadyD'Avigdor-Goldsmid who owned near-by Somerhill House, drowned in asailing accident off Rye. In her memory, the couple commissioned Russian-French artist Marc Chagall to design a stained glass window for the church,which was installed in 1967. When Chagall arrived for the dedication andsaw the church for the first time, he exclaimed “It’s magnificent! I will dothem all!” Here we shall have some time to admire the windows beforecontinuing on to Tunbridge Wells, where there will be time to explore andfind lunch. Early afternoon we continue on to Teapot Island in Yalding wherewe shall enjoy a cream tea and have a chance to see the largest TeapotExhibition in England with over 8200 Teapots to be seen and over 2000 forsale. TheNational Trust’s only arboretum was born from one man’s vision andpassion. Dr Wilfrid Fox used the wooded valley and its lakes as a canvasfor ‘painting a picture’ with trees. Weeping Window Poppies at IWM, LondonDepart Oxted 9.00am (Route C) for the Imperial War Museum, London,which tells the stories of those whose lives have been shaped by war.IWM London is presenting Weeping Window a cascade comprisingseveral thousand handmade ceramic poppies. The breath-takingsculpture, along with its sister one, Wave, were initially conceived as thekey dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood Swept Landsand Seas of Red at the Tower of London in the autumn of 2014. Overthe course of their time at the Tower, the two sculptures were graduallysurrounded by a vast field of ceramic poppies, each one planted by avolunteer. Leonardslee Gardens and Dolls House ExhibitionDepart Oxted 10.00am (Route A) for the drive to the newly re-opened Leonardslee Gardens. Closed to the public in 2010, thegardens are now owned by Penny Streeter, the owner of theBenguela Collection vineyard and Mannings Heath Golf Courseand Wine Estate who has said, “We will restore the gardens totheir former glory and create new facilities on site, including tearooms and dining facilities…” A kaleidoscope of colour sweepsthroughout the grounds, listing the garden as Grade I in theEnglish Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of SpecialHistoric Interest in England. Set in a steep-sided valley; theponds contain a colony of Carp fish and the combination ofparkland, lawn and forest land inhabits a rare colony ofwallabies and a number of deer species who wander semi-freelythroughout the estate. The rich flora in the garden was plantedby Sir Edmund Loder, a Victorian plant collector. First planted in1801, the gardens are noted for spring displays ofrhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells.There is a unique doll’s house exhibition, depicting theEdwardian estate and neighbouring villages at 1⁄12th scale.Farm shop and refreshments available. This new museum in Betteshanger Park on the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery will haveinteractive displays showing how the coal was found, how it was mined & the day-to-day lives of the miners. 1 Bookings for day outings made in writing must be accompanied by full payment. Bookings will be held for 4 dayspending receipt of payment.

2 Your choice of picking up/setting down point must be notified to us at the time of booking. Please ensure you arewaiting at the correct point in plenty of time. Please also ensure that you are at the correct place to re-join thecoach in good time for the return or onward journey. We cannot be held responsible for any loss or expensesuffered by late arrival at a picking up point.

3 Seats on the coach are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Early booking is therefore advisable. You willkeep the same seat throughout the day. As we have coaches with different seating arrangements, we reserve theright to allocate seats other than those you have booked, although this will be avoided as far as possible.

4 Under British law, smoking is prohibited on the coach. We respectfully ask that you refrain from using electroniccigarettes whilst on board.

5 Unless otherwise stated, children’s fares apply under 14 years of age.

6 Should we have to make a significant change to a day trip or excursion we will notify you immediately, and offeryou the option of accepting the changes or a prompt and full refund of all monies paid. This will be the extent ofour liability.

7 Every effort will be made to operate all the outings advertised in this brochure. Should we have to make acancellation, we will give you a prompt and full refund of all monies paid. This will be the extent of our liability.

8 You may cancel your booking at any time prior to departure subject to the following conditions:a) For cancellations notified to us more than 7 days prior to departure, a cancellation charge of up to 33% ofthe fare charged will be made. Please note that where we have had to purchase tickets in advance, we may not beable to refund the price of these.b) For cancellations notified to us less than 7 days prior to departure, no refund can be made, unless the seat isre-sold. In this event the extent of refund will be at our discretion.

9 Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this brochure, the facilities anddisplays available at the venues we visit are beyond our control, and as such we are unable to accept liability forvariations.

10 By popular request we have given approximate return times for each excursion, but please note that these canonly be taken as a guide.

11 Please note that it is mandatory to wear seatbelts on coaches.

12 We reserve the unconditional right to refuse a booking or terminate a client’s booking in the event ofunreasonable conduct which in our opinion is likely to cause damage, distress, danger or annoyance to otherclients, employees, property or to any third party. If you are prevented from travelling or continuing yourexcursion by such a termination our responsibility for your excursion thereupon ceases. Full cancellation chargeswill apply and we will be under no obligation for any refund, compensation or loss which you may incur.
